Andrew Monteverde is NOT vanity!

[edit]

Hi Redvers - I'm new to Wikipedia and was attempting to write an article about a prominent local businessman in New Orleans that you deleted as a "vanity article." The article is about an individual who is of interest to many New Orleanians and not a mere acquaintance I am attempting to hagiograph on Wikipedia. I respect Wikiepedia very much. The article may have appeared to be a vanity one because I did not include information about the significance of Monteverde, but that was only because it was a first cut that was rapidly deleted. I would appreciate the restoration of this article as soon as possible. Thanks! tnoz 21:28, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Thank you!
Hi Redvers/Archive04, thank you for your support in my Rfa! It passed with a final tally of 86/0/0. If you need help or just want to talk let me know! Again, thank you! – Dakota ~ ° 22:49, 3 March 2006 (UTC) [reply]

My RfA

[edit]

Thank you for your support in my request for adminship. I'm delighted that the RfA succeeded with a final consensus of 52/17/7, and receiving comments including having 'excellent potential to become a great moderator', and I am now an administrator. It did however only just pass, and I shall do my very best to rectify any of my errors, including the general belief that I should do more article work. If you have any concerns, or if you ever feel that I may be able to help you, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Again, thank you!

[edit]

You have discussed date links before. It seems that more and more people are becoming interested in the debate in many talk pages. I do not know if you have seen the discussion and votes at: new bot application. Voting may have ended, so I am not soliciting your vote. But I thought that you might like to read what has been said by other editors. Several editors feel strongly about it and the issue will inevitably be discussed again. bobblewik 11:49, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship?

[edit]

Hi, I had a cursory look at your contribs and it looks like you are potential admin material. Do let me know if you are interested in my nominating you - if you express an interest, I'd review your contribs extensively and decide on nominating you. I'd be requiring abt a week for doing the nomination work. You meet all my standards (subject to some mior caveats) and I have found you to be both sensitive and sensible in my interactions with you. So, do let me know. --Gurubrahma 06:34, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As your admin coach, I think you're pretty much ready, so I'd say go for it. :) NSLE (T+C) at 06:36 UTC (2006-03-06)
My concern was about my standards where you wd fall in mainspace edits (<50% of total edits) -however, this does not apply in the strict sense of the term because you create very long articles in a single edit - I reckon others would take around 20 edits for such articles. Another standard is at least 10 edits per day, you would be upwards of 20 if I consider your edits from oct.2005, which is when you became an active editor, so no prob. Also, I would like you to be bold - FWIW, I PROD-ded Newberries Variety Group. If you accept my proposal, this would be my first nom and I basically plan to follow User:Durin's standards in nominating - as can be evident here. So, do let me know. Meanwhile, regardless of my nominating you or not and your accepting my nom or not, it is good to answer the standard questions on rfa on a sub-page of yours, so that they can be well refined, which is what I did for my rfa. and finally, as NSLE says, why not go for it?? --Gurubrahma 10:37, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, just noticed that you already have the first draft of answers ready - they are good enough for the final draft as well. So, what's the good word? Yes, right? (If it is no, it is no longer good word). btw, you may want to have a look at this. --Gurubrahma 12:31, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be getting back to you latest by the week-end with my review and the potential nom. You may want to have a look at this meanwhile. --Gurubrahma 15:40, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

Hello, Redvers, thanks for your recent welcome. Don't worry about it being belated, I didn't know it was usual! As a matter of fact I had been contributing for a while with my IP address (which is actually a lot less anonymous than my present pseudonym!), but someone said I should register after (s)he reverted some true but jokey-sounding stuff (maybe when I pointed out that the 43rd president of the US is actually the 42nd person in the job, don't remember).

Recently I've not done many edits in the areas you say you have an interest in:

Concentration camp Theresienstadt, Viktor Ullmann, The Emperor of Atlantis (has little about WWII)

Comet tank very minor

The World at War (TV Series) very minor

Your adminship nom

[edit]

Hi, good to know that there is lot of good news in real life - I should know as I've been snooping around for the last 3-4 days ;). btw, I've checked your contribs and they are fabulous. I consider it my privilege to nominate you. I've sent you an e-mail to see if yours is enabled or not. Please respond to that e-mail. I will get around to setting up the nom by Sunday or so. I would not be around typically between 1630 hours UTC to 0430 hours UTC, any other time should be OK - do let me know if the time and day are convenient or not. --Gurubrahma 17:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Redvers, the works are all ready. Do let me know on my talkpage if you are online and ready. I should wrap up things related to your rfa in another 10 minutes or so. I will be online for another hour and a half at least. --Gurubrahma 16:53, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A little wikicode help?

[edit]

I'm trying to find someone who can gimme a hand with a little wikicoding, and your page is too well put together for you not to know how to do what I'm trying to get done. {{Cornell}} is currently written in the default font, but I'm trying to get it to display in Palatino, especially the "Cornell University" part. How do I accomplish that? Thanks for your time, JDoorjam Talk 21:25, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for you note regarding my proposed merger of the Central News South article. The lists of names in Central News South and Central News West differ from the list in Central Independent Television. I would like someone familiar with the programs (ahem... programmes) to confirm which list(s) are accurate before the merger takes place. Are you in a position to do this? Admin nom

[edit]

Hi, your admin nom is here. Just see if my nom is ok - if it requires copyedit, do it yourself. If it requires some additions or deletions, do let me know. I should be online from 0800UTC to 1630UTC with some breaks in between. Sign the nom, answer the questions and add it to WP:RFA after changing the time - btw, your model answers are perfect. I have not yet voted as I want to see a lot of "beating the nominator" support votes. I have been impressed with your work and I believe that you are a great asset to WP. btw, check the last line of nom, I used the alphabets in "REDVERS" to create words like versed, served and deserve - poetic license ;) By the time you messaged me on my talkpage yesterday, I was busy in the dream land as my time zone is UTC+0530 hours. --Gurubrahma 05:07, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I WANT TO BEAT THE NOMINATOR! well not literally, that would be mean --Syrthiss 13:06, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have voted. All the best. I should be going off-line in around half-an-hour or so. I believe the rfa would pass easily. --Gurubrahma 16:40, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have also added notices to your userpage and talkpage as done by several nominators. Feel free to change the formatting etc. if you are not comfortable with it. Anyways, it will be there only for a week, so there. --Gurubrahma 17:02, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, best of luck with your RfA. I'm sure it will pass with flying colours; when I saw your name listed I was very surprised you weren't already an admin. (I know it's a cliche..) And secondly, I love the user page layout. Looks fantastic! - Wezzo (talk) (ubx) 20:31, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't put articles in the main Lists category

[edit]

Instead take a few more seconds to find the best Lists subcategory for it. Thanks. --JeffW 19:19, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to me like the best category is Category:Mass media lists which is under the Culture list category. It can't go in either the television or radio subcats since it looks like it encompasses both. I've been spending my time trying to make these categories easy to use, so if you have any suggestions, please put them in the Lists category talk page. --JeffW 19:33, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in the main category space, Broadcasting is under Mass Media which is under Culture which is just like it is in the Lists categories. But I also see that Broadcasting us under Telecommunications which is under Communication which is under Society and Information both of which are top-level categories. Is that clearer? I've been contemplating adding a Society lists category. I've also been contemplating getting rid of the Culture lists category. I've also been trying to figure out a way to make the Subject-oriented categories stand out from the other categories. --JeffW 20:21, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia 16:45, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, congrats from the nominator too. Be careful with the bells and whistles for a week - some powerful buttons are too near to regular editing buttons. You beat my RfA of 50-0-0 very handsomely, great show (truth be told, I was jealous when you reached 50-0-0 within a day, but I answered to myself that it was indeed because of my nom ;)) - honestly, I wanted you to reach WP:100 asap. All the best in your new role and don't hesitate to ping me when in doubt. --Gurubrahma 17:01, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

[edit]

Hey, congratulations on adminship. If you're looking to flex your newfound administrative muscles (or just do someone--and the project--a favor), could you move Amos to Amos (disambiguation) for me? There's a requested move for it, but those always take way, way too long... anyways, about the move: there's one main purpose for the term "Amos", which is the Book of Amos in the Bible--Amos ought to redirect there. But I can't do that currently, since Amos (disambiguation) has some history... Anyways, thanks a lot either way, and congratulations! Matt Yeager (Talk?) 23:25, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats, and could you lend me a hand? (Part deux)

[edit]

Congrats on your adminship and your dizzying vote count! If you've figured out how to help Matt above, would you please help me with a similar problem. The article Frankfurt an der Oder should be moved to Frankfurt (Oder), because that is what the city is legally and commonly called [1] [2] [3], but can't be moved because of an edit history on the target page. Someone changed it to the present title a while back because they thought it sounded better (it's archaic) and that it was "unusual" to have parenthesis in a city name (it isn't in Germany). I've put in a requested move .... yadda yadda yadda, you know the rest. If you can fix it, I'd be grateful. ProhibitOnions 20:36, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

[edit]
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

I have created an article about this open source software, and I don't know why it was deleted. Please explain me, what is the difference between faces and other software like GanttProject, Open Workbench, Planner which are very similar projects and are obviously worth to be included in wikipedia and faces not.

"Vandalism"

[edit]

Hi Redvers. You may have already worked this out, but it's 99% certain that 84.9.211.143 is the indefinitely banned user Irate. (He has been making edits from various IP addresses in the 84.9.xxx.xxx range since his most recent incarnation, Ian Davies was blocked in February (see Association of British Counties, for instance, User talk:David Gerard#Irate, or User talk:David Gerard#Your integrity.). The edits to List of famous people from Merseyside and associated pages bear all the hallmarks of his previous behaviour, especially the accusations of "vandalism". --RFBailey 18:16, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

deletion: Mal Duff

[edit]

Hello Redvers,

not trying to make it a memorial. the mal duff piece was meant to be a start for an entry about a person who made a major contribution to a sport/pastime called Scottish Winter Climbing. this is a unique brand of mountaineering requiring determination, strength, skill, intelligence and humour. Mal Duff was strong in all of those attributes, particularly the latter: thus the nature of what was written.

Having said that, I am a wiki beginner and i bow to your experience and will take your advice on how an appropriate contribution can be crafted.

as stated in the piece, duff was featured in a number of published works. only a few of those were mentioned in the piece. he died just before the internet revolution really took off and thus 'falls between two stools': the truly historic on the one hand and the current net presence on the other. my objective was to provide a reference to a character who played a strong role not only in the development of scottish winter mixed climbing but also mountaineering as a business sector in Scotland and the UK as a whole.

my piece drew too heavily perhaps on the wit of the man and those who worked with him.

Jonny Classic "vanity" article

[edit]

I noticed that you deleted my article on Jonny Classic under the reasons that it was a vanity article, and I was wondering why you thought it was that. Jonny Classic is a legitimate artist and I was stating an article so we (the Gruvis Malt fan community) could add their members works to wikipedia. The article was not a finished work and I was going to post it to the messge board so other users could aadd to it. if you could explain why you feel this doesn't deserve to be on wikipedia that would be very helpful. Thanks, Eloneil83 19:07, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Evan[reply]

Jonny Classic Part 2

[edit]

Jonny Classic has not gotten any press yet unfortuntely, but he is a member of gruvis malt who has been deemed notable. More history on the band and his release can be found at www.gruvismalt.com under the history section. The gruvis malt message board members (located at http://gavincastleton.com/messageboard/index.php) will be working to help expand this page as well if it is allowed to stay up. Thanks a lot, Eloneil83 19:22, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Evan[reply]

Please don't bite the newbies. Obviously there's a good probability that someone posting articles in Spanish won't understand warnings in English. It's not difficult to go to babelfish and translate a more useful message. Gazpacho 19:24, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jonny Classic Part 3

[edit]

The Wikipedia notability guidleines for musicians state that a musician is notable if it meets any one of the criteria, and without reading through the whole list, Jonny Classic meets the following criteria: Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable. Gruvis Malt, who once again is a founding member of, has a wikipedia article and has certainly been deemed notable, so how is the notability criteria not met? Eloneil83Evan

re: welcome message

[edit]

I'm trying to think of how to fix that. Any ideas? James Kendall [talk] 20:18, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I tend to just skim down the new users log and click lots of talk pages so that they open in tabs. I think that it's right that every user should be welcomed (there are so many that haven't) as I was pleased that someone took the time to welcome me and then answered a question that I had. If users decide to vandalise, surely it doesn't help to say 'hi' and perhaps point them in a good direction? James Kendall [talk] 20:36, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • I admit, I welcomed those because their usernames kicked ass. Even if they were just being asses. Interestingly enough, I've found that few respond, but those that do tend to stick around. I've not had vandalism (save for some advertising which was strange - the user only edited my talk space and no articles) but the revert button takes 2 seconds.

Also, questions further my own knowledge - I'm a lazy student, but a suprising active one when others need help. James Kendall [talk] 20:53, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

I didn't really think that it was probably better suited to a dictionary. Apologies.

vCustomer Article

[edit]

Hey:

I would like to know why you are deleting my article on vCustomer (http://www.vcustomer.com), a Top 3 outsourcing company (Ratings by Global Media). I am a bonafide employee of vcustomer and creating this page to increase awareness about my company.

I would like you to respond socially as you profess to be a socialist.

Thanks and Regards

Vanity Template Question

[edit]

Hey, I noticed one of the messages you left on a user's page about creating vanity articles. Is that a template, or do you just have it saved somewhere? --Hetar 19:36, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article for deletion

[edit]

The Cleo Whip article was changed to include the following criteria: "Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable; note that it is often most appropriate to use redirects in place of articles on side projects, early bands and such." As a 'newcomer' I'm not sure how to improve the article more than that sorry. Yve0 14:29, 31 March 2006 (UTC)Yve0[reply]
