Remove all mentions of Sega R&D2 as developer for every game's infobox?

NakhlaMan Unless it’s reliably sourced, yes. We need to take a strict interpretation of reliable sources and what is a reliable source. What does the source say? If reliable sources don’t say R&D2, then we can’t, either. (Especially since Sega often doesn’t credit which studio developed what in game credits, save for Sonic Team and shortly before and during the 2000-2004 spinout of the studios to separate companies.)
That’s the whole basis of adding anything to Wikipedia, that it is backed by a reliable source, and I will stress reliable, if only because most Sega fan sites are extremely unreliable. So much has been said especially of Sega’s development history that isn’t accurately sourced, and often turns out to be inaccurate as a result. Red Phoenix talk 01:55, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

The third paragraph of the History section is all about releases, and acknowledgment that this was released seems appropriate for this paragraph. Hey man first of all two things:
  1. When are you going to put the information I told you for the SG-1000 article and also please respond to my question about the total count of the games.
  2. Can you please point me to a GREAT video game list because also the reason why I have been doing this is because of a discussion I had in the talk page for the list of Sega Saturn games.

@NakhlaMan: I took care of the Othello Multivision addition tonight, and even found an image on Commons I was able to add. On the games count, if and only if you have reliable sources to prove the addition of these games can we mention them. Verifiability, not truth, after all.
I don't think I can point you to a great video game list because a truly great one doesn't exist, at least not for a console with a substantial amount of games. The way to do it would be to dredge out a magazine source for EVERY game, in EVERY region confirming developer, publisher, and release date. In the case of Sega, some of this does exist online; there are websites I won't link to (because they link to copyright violations) that have thousands of magazine scans. But then you're talking, say in the case of List of Sega CD games, a list that would have over 1000 citations if done that way. The next easiest way are when there are very reliable databases, i.e. a company's official lists, or something like Allgame which is considered reliable per WP:VG/S. Caution has to be used with unreliable databases that may be user-created, like GameSpot.
At this point, I'd propose a hybrid approach: use said reliable databases to cite columns, and if some info like a developer or a release date is wrong, place a correct citation in the individual box where it differs from the database. Above all, making sure everything is reliably sourced is paramount; unsourced material is the worst possible thing. Red Phoenix talk 02:21, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok first off all thanks for taking care of the SG-1000 article, and second why don't we make a policy for how to do a video game list because I want every VG list to be the same formatting. Also do you think every list has to start of with a quick history leason of the console and then near the end bold and italc the number of games were released or do we mention that at the start? On a VG style guide, the proper place to bring that up is probably the Video games WikiProject, but I’d advise that dependent on the console, list formatting may not be one size fits all. As for “a quick history lesson”, the answer there is yes, because each of these lists is a separate article and therefore should agree with WP:SALLEAD. I wouldn’t presume ever that a stand-alone list article or page would need to direct to another page for more information; it would simply link to that other page but provide a basic level of context. Honestly, I think either order works; I would not be so picky. If you’re having a content dispute with someone, just discuss it with them personally, and seek a third opinion if necessary. As I don’t have as much time for Wikipedia as I once did, I don’t have time to get involved, and my opinions of how to interpret the guidelines are just that. My discussion with you here is me providing my opinion on how to interpret said guidelines, but the guidelines are open to interpretation for a reason, and that’s what consensus is for.   • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

Most Sega titles Master System-Game Gear were either co-developed by Arc or done only by Arc. This was featured on Arc System Work's 25th anniversary book whose list can be viewed here https://mevius.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/gsaloon/1319687863/409-411.

Be aware the book incorrectly lists the Genesis version of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, instead of the SMS version, as developed by Arc System Works but otherwise everything you see here comes from the book.

WikiCup 2023 November newsletter

The WikiCup is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process. After all this hard work, Delaware BeanieFan11 has emerged as the 2023 winner and the WikiCup Champion. The finalists this year were:-

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the competition, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Hey RedPhoenix sorry to repeat this again but can you please approve this source. I know u are busy and not on Wikipedia a lot but PLEASE approve this source when you get time.

Most Sega titles Master System-Game Gear were either co-developed by Arc or done only by Arc. This was featured on Arc System Work's 25th anniversary book whose list can be viewed here https://mevius.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/gsaloon/1319687863/409-411.

Be aware the book incorrectly lists the Genesis version of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, instead of the SMS version, as developed by Arc System Works but otherwise everything you see here comes from the book.

I did read the whole page, but automatically I have to say no because this is a web forum. If it’s in this supposed book, show me the book. That would be what to cite, and I wouldn’t do it at all without verifying to the book itself it’s there - and saying that “most” games for either system were done by this one third-party developer is a very long leap to make without reliable source verification, and it better be a top-quality source for such a bold claim. The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Hi there, Dank, this is a pleasant surprise. I had planned to nominate Daytona USA for its 30th anniversary for a non-specific date in April but I ended up missing the TFA nomination window. Nice to see that it gets a second chance.
Here are what I’d consider the key points to summarize in the blurb, whether or not they’ll all fit in:
  • Debut of the Model 2, a new arcade system board that was developed in partnership with GE Aerospace.
  • First director gig for Sega AM2’s Toshihiro Nagoshi (later Sega’s chief creative officer)
  • Inspired by NASCAR
  • Ported to the Sega Saturn and Windows in 1995; was a launch game for the Saturn in territories west of Japan.
  • Sega mandated this game had to do better than Namco’s Ridge Racer, which came out at the end of ‘93 and topped the sales charts. Reviews for both the arcade and Saturn version compared and contrasted it to Ridge Racer and its PlayStation port.
  • Considered one of the best selling arcade games of all time (though precise numbers aren’t usually publicly available for arcade games, and this is no exception).
  • Longevity; continues to be present in arcades and bowling alleys.

I decided to mention Daytona International Speedway, since many international readers won't get the reference just from the game's name. New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

@SPH1955: So, a couple of things here: If you've reworked the article (where?), then you don't really need undeletion. You would just need to recreate the draft. But, secondly, I have to ask what is your connection with the subject of the draft? Both the promotional tone of the text and the contents of your undeletion request at WP:REFUND suggest to me that you may have a conflict of interest with the subject, and at worst a paid relationship, see WP:COI and WP:PAID for the relevant policies. We don't really allow paid editors to directly edit articles on the people paying them and it's strongly discouraged with editors who hold a conflict of interest.   • Global blocks may now target accounts as well as IP's. Administrators may locally unblock when appropriate.
  • Users wishing to permanently leave may now request "vanishing" via Special:GlobalVanishRequest. Processed requests will result in the user being renamed, their recovery email being removed, and their account being globally locked.

I found the actual book with the exact pages that mentions the company's WHOLE gameography of Internet Archive!!!

So does that mean we can finally change the Monaco GP games and every title on this book to developed by Arc System Works????

Be aware the book incorrectly lists the Genesis version of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, instead of the SMS version, as developed by Arc System Works but otherwise everything you see here comes from the book.

Since it’s on the Internet Archive, you absolutely can and should include the URL to the source as well - since the Internet Archive possesses a DMCA exemption, we don’t need to worry about potential copyright violations as much. WikiCup 2024 August newsletter

The fourth round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 29 August. Each of the 8 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 472 points, and the following contestants scored more than 700 points:

Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated. Contestants put in extraordinary amounts of effort during this round, and their scores can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 36 featured articles, 55 featured lists, 15 good articles, 93 in the news credits, and at least 333 did you know credits. They have conducted 357 featured content reviews, as well as 553 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 30 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed during Round 5, which starts on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. If two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
