Reinhardt

I understand why you changed that part on the Django Reinhardt entry, but if you read the article Jazz guitarist you'll see what I think was the intent, perhaps partial intent, of that passage. I didn't write it. It was obviously written by a fan. In fact, I had to change some information on that entry, too, which you can find in the page history. The fan exaggerated Reinhardt's handicap, saying that he lost the use of all but two fingers, when in fact he lost the use of two fingers. As to the point about "delayed recognition", I'm not sure where that comes from. Reinhardt was praised from the beginning and continues to be praised. But it is true that jazz guitar didn't make much of an impact until amplification. Until then, it wasn't considered a jazz instrument, if only because it couldn't be heard over the other instruments. Reinhardt played mostly acoustic guitar and the group he formed in France, the Hot Club, was an acoustic string group. Reinhardt is also European. Jazz was born in America. In those days, there wouldn't have been an immediate influx of video, audio, and news about Reinhardt like there would be today, so his popularity would have taken longer to increase. All of these comments perhaps suggest what happens when a writer or editor fails to be impartial. People sometimes write about what they care about most, but that often means that in doing so they are biased and can't be impartial. Then when information is changed, they become defensive. I see it often.

I am very new to this so I am not quite sure how to respond. I take your point about amplification but the time period where guitars were not supposed to be "jazz" instruments was just too vague. Plus, if you just poke around a little bit you find a rich trove of jazz guitarists in the southern part of the United States where jazz was born. As only one tiny example, we can turn to Leadbelly. If you want to call his music something other than jazz, well, you could do that. But, jazz is a very broad form of music. Charlie Byrd played mostly Brazilian stuff but it was jazz. Additionally, there was no lack of interest in Django during any time period. He was a giant but popularity is a fickle thing that both comes and goes. Guitar has long been a jazz instrument and I am astonished that Grisman would refute that in any way. ----

Yes, I know. I wrote much of it. In your time on Wikipedia you may find that the more controversial (whatever that means) your edit, the more resistance you will face. There are people who will go to war over a comma. Remember that.

Thank you for that tip. I believe you as I have been in the technical realm for many decades and know how crazy people can get. So, I will heed your advice and severely limit my editing on Wikipedia. Cheers..
