Re: Review
[edit]Hi Sage -- Great. This was one of the books which I devoured years ago, so I am very happy to work on a review of this book. Sometimes I worry that many Wikipedians have no sense of the intellectual tradition they are part of -- especially their most recent forebears -- & if nothing else, Gross' book would suggest some ideas Wikimedians could pursue to further improve the community. -- llywrch (talk) 22:28, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia in article in July 2009 (Correction) quality magazine
[edit]I wanted to let you know that I have an article in the June 2009 issue of Quality Progress, the monthly publication of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) that includes Wikipedia. What I dealt with was the Good Article nomination process, including the auditing (the other users who assisted were not disclosed by ASQ) I went through with the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec, Czech Republic. It should be out by sometime late next month. Chris (talk) 01:48, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- I will do that. Chris (talk) 22:43, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- It was not in the June issue which I got in the mail today. It may in the next issue. I will let you know. Sorry about that. Chris (talk) 21:27, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

You're invited...
[edit]New York City Meetup
|
In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, establish a membership process for the chapter, review the upcoming Wiki-Conference New York 2009 (planned for ~100 people at NYU this summer) and future projects like Wikipedia at the Library, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the March meeting's minutes).
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

History of biology for front page?
[edit]The TFA nomination queue is pretty empty right now. It has been more than 2 years since its FA promotion, which gives it a couple of points and with a 3rd point for basic subject matter that should be enough even without an obvious date tie-in. It is such a strong article I don't think it would have any problems getting through at 3 points. I would kind of like to see it appear this summer as it ties into the whole 2009 year of Darwin thing, but if it ran around now it would in no way interfere with a November 24 nomniation for Origin of species. If you like I would be happy to handle the nomination (I have been involved in the TFAR process quite a bit this year). Let me knnow what you think. I will watch your talk page if you want to respond here, or just respond on my talk page. Rusty Cashman (talk) 17:56, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, I think that's a good idea. I didn't realize it had never been on the Main Page.--ragesoss (talk) 18:05, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
- I nominated it at WP:TFAR. I picked June 3 out of a hat because there seems to be an opportunity there. By the by, Dave Souza and I are hoping to put On the Origin of Species, which just made GA, up for FAC sometime in the next few weeks. If you could take a look at it and let us know if you see any deficiencies, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Rusty Cashman (talk) 18:47, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- I will. I've been keeping an eye on it, and you guys are dong excellent work. But I haven't gone through the whole thing at once, so I'll do that soon.--ragesoss (talk) 18:56, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Back to signpost?
[edit]I was very involved in Signpost about 2 years ago, but life sort of got in the way. Right now I am returning to formal education, and going to be majoring in 'Technology and new Media in Education'. This means that I'm:
- really interested in reading anything on tech, new media, or education, obviously
- really broke because school is expensive
After 15 years of working in web dev and light programming, and 5 as an admin, and a decade as a blogger, etc., I'm good at understanding the tech and social issues presented in the books. I just can't really afford them. I trained as a journalist before hearing the web's siren song, and I write well; there are other 'lifestyle' articles written by me around that time on things like The Wikipedia Plays, and things of that ilk (I've added the review of Cult of the Amateur, which I believe was the first review Signpost published, to the review page, too).
If you do get advance copies of books, I would be incredibly glad to review them. I will also keep an eye out for anything that I can reasonably claim as related to my schoolwork (and thus, I can use my grant and scholarship funds towards) on the review list. --Thespian (talk) 10:18, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- I don't have an email address for you to send you mine, but i am this userid at sleepingcat.com for getting in touch. and thespian on freenode. I'm interested in both books, and hopefully, since it was Memorial Day in the US, there's still time :-) --Thespian (talk) 23:45, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Arbitration report (25 May)
[edit]As requested, I've written the arbitration report for this week; it's ready for transfer from User:AGK/B.
I've slightly altered the standard layout this week, in order to better accommodate coverage of the unfolding Sam Blacketer matter—which certainly warrants a degree of coverage.

Yo Sage, just caught the new issue and have a small question: is the second paragraph of this story "Beginning in mid-May..." supposed to refer to FPC rather than FAC? If not (i.e. if FAC is intentional) it would be interesting to learn what role FAC regulars had at FPC/VPC. Regards, Skomorokh 19:50, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Origin of Species FAC
[edit]I was wondering if you had an opinion on the On The Origin of Species FAC at [[1]]. Your participation would be most welcome. Rusty Cashman (talk) 09:36, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- I just wanted to make sure you didn't forget :) As for Mayr I think his summary of the theory is relatively uncontroversial and it provides a good secondary source to follow. The section used to cite Darwin's own recapitulation chapter as well as Mayr (with basically the same ideas in somwhat different and more rambling format), but during the GA review process a concern was raised that relying on a primary source for such a high level summary might be borderline OR; so I made the decision to follow Mayr's concise summary more closely. As far as I know it is the only major point on which the article follows Mayr, and the article does take into account concerns about Mayr's historical research; see the last paragraph of the "Variation and heredity" subsection of "Contents". One thing I am relatively certain the article does not suffer from is over reliance on any single source. Rusty Cashman (talk) 20:00, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Mes Compliments!
[edit]Your Review of Cyberchiefs is the absolute best piece I have read in the Signpost to date. - Madame, my pseudonymity is quite fine, thank you. And please don't pretend that you are not enjoying teh drama of being a lab frog on at least some level.:)--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) (talk) 07:33, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Can I echo the positive comments about your review of Cyberchiefs: Autonomy and Authority in Online Tribes. Although I've not read the book yet I found inspiration for some tangential work I'm doing for my own doctorate, updating classic work of the Diffusion of Innovations within complex organisations in which communities of practice via online communication is becoming the norm. I am exploring some of the factors (including authority) which may be significant, but wonder whether the book has also examined power relationships and homophilly along with the general and context specific psychological antecedents which influence ways in which people decide to participate in public welfare/non profit endeavors. I am looking for/at evidence sources which illustrate that behaviours are different in these contexts than in those where financial reward is the driving force. I originally came to your talk page looking for a way to comment on the Signpost piece - but there doesn't seem to be a feedback (?talk page) opportunity in SP so I couldn't thank you more publicly for an excellent review.— Rod talk 15:46, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
