December 2014 GOCE newsletter
[edit]Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter
Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here! Election time again: The election of coordinators to serve from 1 January to 30 June 2015 is now underway. Candidates can nominate themselves or others from December 01, 00:01 (UTC), until December 15, 23:59. The voting period will run from December 16, 00:01 (UTC), until December 31, 23:59. You can read about coordinators' duties here. Please consider getting involved and remember to cast you vote—it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself! Thank you all once again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve anything without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis. If you can change your mind, don't hesitate. With the hostage situation in Sydney, perhaps we can make Thai royalty a news event. --George Ho (talk) 01:12, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hello. I don't object to the Sydney hostage story, because I think it has repercussions regarding Islamic State. However, in my opinion, this particular Thai royalty story isn't necessarily newsworthy for ITN. If this were the king's wife or something, then maybe it'd be more important worldwide.-RHM22 (talk) 18:06, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Dear,
I have seen that you have removed the available recording of Bruckner's Pange lingua, WAB 33, which is put on YouTube, because you are afraid for possible copyright violation.
Be ensured that I will never put a reference to a YouTube recording before I have checked that there is no obvious copyright violation, but it can indeed not always be ascertained...
The aim for putting it was to let know it to readers who do not have a CD with the concerned motet.
Best regards, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 11:42, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- PS: I propose to replace it by the Pange lingua, WAB 33 a performance by the Concordia Chamber Choir, put by the choir-self on YouTube. I think that you can then be ensured that there is no copyright violation. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 11:58, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- FYI: See what I wrote some days ago on Gerda Arendt's talk page about this concern. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 14:27, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Meneerke bloem: The one from Concordia Choir seems just fine; since they've uploaded it themselves, there's no chance of a copyright violation. However, with that said, the link must go in an 'External links' section, under a new header at the bottom of the article. External links in the body of an article are almost never acceptable, so I'm going to keep the link but move it to an appropriate section of the article. Thank you for the note and for your efforts here on Wikipedia.-RHM22 (talk) 15:13, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- I've moved that to the 'External links' section. Some basic guidelines involving external links can be found at WP:MOS#External links. There's not much reason to include an external link in the body of an article, except maybe in an infobox or something like that. Anyway, the link to the performance is still in there, but you'll now find it under 'External links.'-RHM22 (talk) 15:25, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. I will do the same for the links to YouTube I have put in other pages. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 15:27, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sure thing! Thanks for your willingness to find a good solution. By the way, feel free to word the 'External links' section however you'd like. I don't know anything about music, so I'm not sure if my summary of the link is correct.-RHM22 (talk) 15:30, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- I have done it in all the concerned pages. I have a question concerning 8 of the motets: Michael Stenov issued a benefit CD/DVD with 8 motets, and issued also these 8 motets separately on YouTube. See, e.g., the "Selected discography" section of Afferentur regi: Michael Stenov, Cantores Carmeli, Benefizkonzert Karmeliternkirche Linz – CD/DVD issued by the choir, 2006 – also on YouTube: Anton Bruckner – Motette Afferentur regi à 4 voces und 3 Posaunen. Is it OK so, or should I report the YouTube link separately in the "External links" section? Please advise. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 22:05, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm; that's a tough one. I would probably add it as an inline citation, e.g. "Michael Stenov, Cantores Carmeli, "Benefizkonzert Karmeliternkirche Linz" - CD/DVD issued by the choir, 2006, also on YouTube[inline citation with a link to youtube video, retrieval date, etc]" That way, it's nice and clean. Otherwise, I would create an 'External links' section for it. I'm fairly picky about external links, but other editors might be okay with including them in the discography section. What do you think about the inline citation suggestion?-RHM22 (talk) 23:18, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Meneerke bloem:Here's a suggestion which illustrates what I said above: User:RHM22/Sandbox6. If that looks acceptable to you, feel free to copy and paste the relevant section to the mainspace article or modify it in my sandbox however else you'd like, if you feel like experimenting.-RHM22 (talk) 06:42, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your suggestion. I have done it. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 09:42, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- Réginald: It looks good, I think. You've done a lot of good work expanding the coverage of Bruckner. I admit reluctantly that I wasn't aware of him until I read the article here a few days ago.-RHM22 (talk) 15:12, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Iam lucis orto sidere DYK
[edit]Dear,
In Band XXI of the Gesamtausgabe, the two settings of 1868 of Iam lucis orto sidere are put together as No. 24a & No. 24b (on pp. 94-95 and pp. 96-97, respectively). The Gesamtausgabe considers them thus apparently as a first version of the motet in two different settings. Locus iste is following as No. 25. Virga Jesse is put as No. 34. The version of 1886 of Iam lucis orto sidere is following as No. 35. My suggestion:
- ... that Anton Bruckner composed two settings of Iam lucis orto sidere for the Wilhering Abbey (pictured), and a new version of the motet 18 years later?
Gerda put in the meantime another suggestion:
- ... that Anton Bruckner's two settings of Iam lucis orto sidere for the Wilhering Abbey (pictured) have been regarded as early versions of a third setting written 18 years later?
Thanks for your appreciated help, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 10:37, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

Delighted at your return
[edit]Welcome back.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:39, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Wehwalt: Hello, Wehwalt, and thank you! I wanted to nominate AACS years ago for FA, so I'm glad that I was finally able to do so. There have been a lot of changes since I was last active; some positive and some troubling (especially that horrible 'blackout' and the current activism). This new 'ping' feature is just dandy, though. Whoever came up with that idea deserves praise. How have you been doing?-RHM22 (talk) 16:19, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- yes it is convenient. I'm doing fine hope you are too. Still much work needs to be done in the coin field.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:02, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm doing well, thank you. I noticed Bosbyshell on the main page! That article will no doubt introduce many people to someone with whom they were probably totally unfamiliar before. Most of my coin references are now packed away, but I will certainly revisit those in the future. I'm also thinking of doing some work on articles concerning the White Rajahs.-RHM22 (talk) 21:44, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- I have limited knowledge dealing with them, but I know the basic story. I'll get to reviewing your medallions shortly. We're only three or four articles away from making American dollar coins a featured topic ...--Wehwalt (talk) 22:18, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
- They were pretty interesting, and the life of the first (James Brooke) reads like a Kipling novel. If you remember, I have a family history of colonialism, so that's an interesting subject for me.
- Great; thank you! I look forward to your review. I don't think that the remaining dollar coins are covered by the references I currently own, but I think I can find some good material to complete those articles. I'll take a look and see exactly what I need.-RHM22 (talk) 00:41, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Delighted at your diligent reading of the cantata matching your user name ;) - Wehwalt and I belong to a cabal for article improvement, did you know? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:04, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: It was my pleasure, and an interesting article makes for an interesting read-through. I suppose it speaks to my absentmindedness that the number 22 didn't register with me! Regarding that Cabal, it looks like a fine outfit. I think I will add my name to that list. It's unfortunate to see so many inactive signatories. Too many content creators have become fed up, I think.
- P.s., do you happen to know any editors who might have access to Project MUSE? I'd like to access a certain journal that's archived on there, but I sadly have no way of accessing it, apparently.-RHM22 (talk) 00:05, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- Delighted at your response also! For sources on Classical music, I ask Tim riley, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:36, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you! I will contact Tim Riley to see if he knows were I might find the journal.-RHM22 (talk) 15:50, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- I have access, I think, through George Mason, as I am their Wikipedia affiliate for this year. Send me the info and I'll try. Also, if you have time, could you peek at my current FAC, California Diamond Jubilee half dollar. I had two articles published in The Numismatist on the Oregon Trail Memorial half dollar btw, of course you'll see I used them as sources!--Wehwalt (talk) 17:45, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oh! That is impressive. The only thing I ever got published in The Numismatist was a small letter of correction a few years ago. Unfortunately, my ANA membership lapsed some time in the last few years, so I didn't see your articles. I'm going to join again, so I should be able to see them in the 'electronic edition.'
- The journal entry I'm looking for is this one. I would be extremely grateful if you could help me get access to it! My local library doesn't seem to support that website. Thank you for your efforts.
- By the way, this is unrelated, but you have considered Richard Walther Darré as a potential FA? He was a curious fellow who pioneered some of the more esoteric Nazi ideas.-RHM22 (talk) 18:31, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

John Geoffrey Bruce
[edit]Thank you for your copy editing and DYK review of John Geoffrey Bruce. I had forgotten there was a word "farther" though I'm pretty sure I would have been taught it at school! It is definitely the right word for the context. Thincat (talk) 21:21, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, Thincat! No problem; it was an interesting article that I really enjoyed reading, and the bit about Bruce having never before climbed a mountain and then reaching a record height on Everest is about as 'DYK-worthy' as it gets.
- Regarding the 'farther' versus 'further' bit: Some people use them interchangeably (or maybe based on how each one sounds in a given sentence), so I'm not entirely sure that either one in either context is necessarily wrong. However, I usually use 'farther' to indicate distance and 'further' to indicate something metaphorical ("farther from China," "further his agenda," etc.). There is some historical evidence to support that; 'further' is derived from an ancestor of the word 'forth,' while 'farther' seems to have been influenced by the word 'far' (although both trace their roots back 'forth'). Anyway, that is by no means a grammar 'rule,' so I wouldn't fight anyone who wanted to use one or the other in all contexts.
- Thanks for your note, and for contributing interesting content! Things like that make DYK reviews a joy.-RHM22 (talk) 21:55, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
DYK for Spanish Hill
[edit]On 16 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Spanish Hill, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that an early nineteenth-century Native American man refused to ascend Spanish Hill because he feared a spirit that "made holes through Indians' bodies"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Spanish Hill. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

[edit]You're welcome, RHM22! Nice article there on Stan Musial. Congrats on getting a "Featured Article".EditorExtraordinaire (talk) 21:24, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Editor Extraordinaire. I didn't write the article (it was actually promoted to featured status by Monowi back in 2010); I was just watching it while it was on the main page to avoid vandalism. I think you made the right decision by removing the final s on those abbreviations. Words and acronyms pluralized with apostrophes are a 'pet peeve' of mine, so I try to avoid them religiously. I've heard that even the New York Times sometimes uses them in that way, but that doesn't make it any less wrong. Some grammar mistakes are tolerable, but that one has always bothered me.-RHM22 (talk) 21:46, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh, okay. Can I ask you a question? Is it okay to remove all of the old stuff on my talk page or is that supposed to remain there? Thanks.--EditorExtraordinaire (talk) 21:53, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- EditorExtraordinaire: You can blank your own talk page if you'd like; a user page is generally considered to be yours, so you can do most anything within reason (as long as you don't include copyrighted material, threats, etc.). Personally, I prefer to archive my old talk pages so that people can find things there that might be relevant at some future point. You can create an archive as an offshoot of your talk page, and then put a link to it on the top of the page like I have here on mine. If you'd like to archive it and you need any assistance, feel free to let me know and I'll help you get it all sorted out.-RHM22 (talk) 22:15, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

Musa McKim
[edit]Hello,
I have reviewed the above and approved it for DYK listing. I have also taken the liberty of posting a bit of commentary upon the nomination.
Georgejdorner (talk) 04:37, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- Georgejdorner: Thank you very much for your thoughtful and thorough review! I agree with your points, especially regarding the chronological issue. I had trouble deciding what to do and where to place the information, since there was no clear demarcation between McKim's personal life and her New Deal mural work. Since most of the events in her personal life section took place after most of the events in the section detailing her art career, I decided to place the former after the latter. Obviously her work with the the Section of Fine Arts is what she's most noted for, so I do think it's useful to display the information in two separate sections.
- Regarding the hook, I agree that ALT1 is rather trivial, but I decided to include it because people tend to like things involving very well known people like Pollock. Personally, I prefer the original hook as well.-RHM22 (talk) 04:53, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oohh, just realized you are responsible for Stan Musial. Let me clue you, if you can hook in a baseball hater like myself into reading, you have obviously done a superior job of writing. That article was a very nice addition to the Main page. Congrats!Georgejdorner (talk) 05:38, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- I wish I could take credit for Stan Musial, but unfortunately, I wasn't the author of that excellent article. That one was promoted by Monowi back in 2010. I've written a few featured articles, but none of them are very interesting!-RHM22 (talk) 05:54, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
