This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

My Wikipedia user account was recently blocked by the editor “DragonflySixtyseven.” The provided reason was that “a Wikipedia account is to be used by only one person; this account userpage indicates that it is being used by multiple individuals.”

I do not know how “multiple users” are using the account userpage since I’m the only person tasked with cleaning up the outdated information and factual shortcomings of the Qualcomm article. I would really appreciate some clarification of how an editor has concluded there are multiple users.

I noticed this block happened after I tried to rename a hyperlink in the “References” section of the Qualcomm article by right clicking on the footnote number and selecting “inspect element.” I was doing this because I wanted the reference number to have title like “Qualcomm acquires Elata” rather than “[5]” (to be consistent with the other reference notes). In the process, I might have opened another window while still logged in or I might have logged in again—I’m not sure if these actions would set off a red flag, I don’t know how the editing system works.

Also, please note that I’m making these edits from a work computer, at a company of 20,000+ employees. Is it possible that someone else is making edits from within the company, sharing a similar IP address (but obviously not sharing the same username)? For instance, I know one co-worker who regularly contributes to articles titled “Wireless Health” and “Don Jones (wireless health)” but she has her own username and account.

I sincerely hope that Wikipedia administrators will reconsider the block. When I’ve posted, I have adhered to the “five pillars of Wikipedia.” The information I proposed was factual and I provided third-party sources. Before I actually inserted the edits, I posted them on the “Talk: Qualcomm” page to socialize the edits and I stated who the edits were submitted by (Corporate Communications Team at Qualcomm). I even disclosed my potential conflict of interest (and received a thank you from an editor with the handle “ThemFromSpace” for openly declaring it). I waited five business days for any questions and/or objections. After receiving none, I simply edited the article with my proposed edits. Please review my edits; I believe there is nothing non-factual about them.

If unblocked, I’m open to any advice within my power on how to avoid this situation in the future. (Qcwp (talk) 15:59, 9 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Decline reason:

While I appreciate that you are editing in compliance with our conflict of interest guideline, making only maintenance edits and using the talk page to propose more extensive changes, and I accept your explanation that you have not been abusing multiple accounts, the fact remains that Wikipedia:Username policy does not permit role accounts. An account must belong only to you, personally. It is OK if you want to create an account like "Chris Smith at Qualcomm" which would associate the account with you as an individual while disclosing your COI (we have precedent for this). If you don't wish to create a new account, but prefer to retain your contribution history under a new name, then post another unblock request (use the template {{unblock-un}} for the purpose of changing your username at WP:CHU/Simple. ~Amatulić (talk) 19:41, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Your userpage (User:Qcwp) says "Corporate Communications Team for Qualcomm." which would also indicate to me that this is a role account, rather than an account controlled by and representing a single individual. Is this your personal account, which only you have access to, or are you making edits on behalf of a larger organization?
Also, you should read our conflict of interest guideline - editors are highly discouraged from editing about their own companies and other subject to which they are personally invested. Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 16:33, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
