Who are administrators on Wikipedia? --Puranjan Dev (talk) 15:15, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When you leave messages, please remember to "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~ (four tilde signs) at the end. This will add your name, and the date and time. You can also do this by clicking the 'sign' button, pictured to the right.
Also, please add new comments at the end of talk pages.

Thanks sir. Will follow your advice. Puranjan Dev (talk) 15:15, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Admins are experienced users, chosen by the community of editors. You can find out all about them in Wikipedia:Administrators.  Chzz  ►  14:50, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any mirror sites for wikipedia? Puranjan Dev (talk) 10:25, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are many in fact, with varying degrees of compliance with the appropriate licenses. See Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks. Jujutacular talk 09:35, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)

If you mean, read-only copies of Wikipedia, then yes - there are lots of sites which copy either some, or all, of Wikipedia. No problem there; Wikipedia is free.
Some are listed in ABC DEF - GHI - JKL - MNO - PQR - STU - VWXYZ
In future, please could you add new requests (like this) at the end of your talk page, in a new == Section == -- it helps, if things are kept in date order. Thanks. Chzz  ►  09:39, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some pages are semi-protected or protected. How can we change the protection level? Puranjan Dev (talk) 11:19, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pages are protected because they have been repeatedly vandalized or are the subject of an edit war. If you believe that the reason the page was protected is no longer a problem, it's best to contact the administrator who protected the page first and ask them to remove the protection. You can also request to have protection changed (added or removed) at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. Shell babelfish 11:49, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, how can I edit the title of a wikipedia page? Puranjan Dev (talk) 11:28, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can use the {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} template to alter what the title of a page looks like (for example, to change the font). You can look at Wikipedia:DISPLAYTITLE for more information on that, although it is relatively difficult to do.
I will assume you are looking for how to actually move a page to a new title. That can be done by going to the "down-arrow" at the top of your page, clicking that, and then clicking the "move" button on the menu that drops down. If you cannot move a page because the page has been move-protected (commonly done to prevent vandalism), you will not see the arrow. You can, however, place the following code at the bottom of the talk page of the article in question:

== Requested move == {{subst:move|NewName}} Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines.--~~~~

Let me know if this solves your problem. Reaper Eternal (talk) 13:47, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks sir. I have understood. Puranjan Dev (talk) 11:16, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

[edit]

Hello, Puranjan Dev, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

  Introduction
5    The five pillars of Wikipedia
  How to edit a page
  Help
  Tips

  Manual of Style
  Fun stuff...

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  --Kralizec! A tag has been placed on Seven Wonders of the Medival World, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. Wikipedia is a great place, but you should be safe.

If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Dawn bard (talk) 15:12, 26 December 2007 (UTC) Sunshine, rain etc etc we loyuw4g4 fdrf[reply]

Algebra

[edit]

Howdy. This is just a note to indicate that I reverted your recent edits to Algebra. Articles on Wikipedia do not need to be signed. If you are concerned about attribution, the edit history shows who made which contributions to an article. Michael Slone (talk) 10:59, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Accounts

[edit]
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, please place a new {{help me}} request on this page followed by your questions, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page.

Sir, can we have more than one account in Wikipedia? Is it possible with the same e-mail ID? Puranjan Dev (talk) 12:56, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Generally you should use only one account unless there are special reasons for using more than one, and if you do have a good reason then you should state clearly on both accounts that they are alternative accounts of one person. If you use more than one account and anyone gets the impression that you are doing so for dishonest reasons then you are likely to be blocked from editing for sockpuppetry. If you do have more than one account it is perfectly possible to use the same email address for them. JamesBWatson (talk) 13:00, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pages

[edit]

Is it possible to edit talk pages even if the article is protected?

This help request has been answered. If you need more help, please place a new {{help me}} request on this page followed by your questions, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page.

203.98.117.30 (talk) 15:20, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It depends, articles can be semi-protected which means IPs and new users can't edit. See Wikipedia:PROTECT#Types_of_protection for more info. →GƒoleyFour15:26, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)

Yes, unless the specific talk page has also been protected (which is very rare).
Each specific page can be protected. For example, Classical liberalism‎ is currently fully protected (see [1]) - so only administrators can edit it; you will not see the 'edit' button. But Talk:Classical liberalism is not protected.

RENAMING

[edit]

Please note

You cannot just rename your account by moving your talk page.

I moved it back.

There is already a user called "De" - they have not edited, so you moved over their empty talk page.

To rename your user account, you must use the correct process.

See Wikipedia:Changing_username/Simple.  Chzz  ►  15:42, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help requests

[edit]

Hi - you may get quicker responses to your request for help either by searching for one or two words of the term you are looking for in this HELP namespace search, or by posting your question at the HELPDESK. Thanks and happy editing.  7  08:20, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tags in your sandbox

[edit]

I've deactivated the speedy deletion, hangon, and helpme templates in your sandbox. Placing those tags there causes that page to show up in various category listings which, in effect, say that you're really trying to get the page deleted and ask for help. It's fine, in my opinion (though others may disagree), to try the tags in your sandbox, but please don't leave them active once you've seen how they work. Either deactivate them by putting tlp| or tlc| in front of them or delete them altogether. Good luck with your editing and welcome to Wikipedia. Sources

[edit]

{{helpme}}

Is it necessary to provide a source with every information we provide? How do we source information on wikipedia?

Hi.
When you leave messages, please remember to "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~ (four tilde signs) at the end. This will add your name, and the date and time. You can also do this by clicking the 'sign' button, pictured to the right.
Yes - almost all information needs a reliable source - such as a newspaper, magazine, book or a reputable website (like BBC News, CNN). See WP:SOURCES.
