Glottal stops
Hey Ptcamn! Thanks for the lively discussion on the glottal stop page. I want to be sensitive to any concerns you have, and if it is just a matter of whether or not something was done politely, I hope I can help mediate reconciliation. If there are particular issues you have with Agent X's most recent edit, let's work them out on the talk page and find a compromise. A revert doesn't really explain what your concern is. Thanks again for your patience! --JereKrischel 21:16, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
WikiProject Australia notices
Hi. Thanks for supporting WikiProject Australia, and placing the project banner onto article talk pages. When assessesing articles using the banner parameters, please be aware that all parameters are case sensitive, and are required to be entered exactly as detailed at {{WP Australia}} under Usage. Failing to observe case requirements results in the articles not being sorted into their relevant categories for quality and importance. There may be a workaround for this but at present case must be observed. I've fixed some of your assessments to reflect your true intentions. Just something to keep in mind so your efforts aren't wasted. Thanks again for helping out. There's a lot of work to do. -- Longhair 15:45, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 21:20, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Hi Ptcamn,
I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to do with this edit, but your edit summary indicates you thought the article had some sort of POV problem. Let me assure you, it does not. Apatosaurus is the universally-accepted name for what was once known as Brontosaurus. It was a mistake, it's been acknowledged as a mistake by the governing body, and removing the word "mistake" doesn't make the article NPOV.--Firsfron of Ronchester 23:48, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- "It's not NPOV because my POV is right", eh?
- It's not my POV: I didn't write the article, and I didn't declare Brontosaurus invalid. I'm telling you that if the body which governs dinosaur nomenclature says it's so, it's not an example of Wikipedia having a POV bias, so removing the word "mistake" from the article with an edit summary pointing to WP:NPOV doesn't make sense.
- I assume you use "universally-accepted" to mean "accepted by everyone important anyway"
No, I mean the name Brontosaurus has been declared a junior synonym by the scientific community, and therefore it is a mistake to call it anything but its correct scientific name (in the article), as dinosaurs do not have common names.
- That Brontosaurus does not actually refer to a distinct genus is a fact. That it's the result of a misinterpretation by Othniel Marsh is a fact. That using the name today is a "mistake" is not. Readers are free to draw that conclusion from the above two facts themselves if they want, but it's not true that that's the only conclusion that could be drawn. Wikipedia is a place to inform people of what both the scientific community and the general public are doing, it's not a place to tell people what they should do. --Ptcamn 00:16, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- Who is telling people what they should do?! No one is. But the correct name is Apatosaurus, and that needs to be in the article. Removing scientific findings based on a supposed NPOV violation, when no such NPOV violation exists, is why your edit was reverted. Wikipedia's dinosaur articles reflect what is generally known to science, and aren't meant to reflect what the average person on the street thinks: this is an encyclopedia, not a straw poll.--Firsfron of Ronchester 02:10, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
do you know who can answer some q's re aboriginal origin of words?
Many articles re: place names especially say something like "‘Marriang’ is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘emu’ or ‘place of cranes’." Generally these statements are unsourced. Do you know anyone around here who could provide sources for some of these statments? I understand that many of them are refuted, eg Murrumbidgee River (see the talk page for what I mean) --Garrie 05:36, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- From my talk page you wrote:
- re aboriginal origin of words
- I've just got my hands on copies of Macquarie Aboriginal Words (which is reliable) and Aboriginal Words and Place Names (which isn't), so I'll try to supply both what the word means and what people think the word means where possible.
- BTW, don't you think the translation of Murrumbidgee as "big water" or "plenty water" is a bit racist? I mean, it would have been perfectly grammatically correct in the original language, so why is translated using such poor English? --Ptcamn 10:43, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:GarrieIrons"
- Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. While that might be what a very badly bilingual Australian Aboriginal might have used - when translating from an aboriginal dialect which wasn't his native language, into english which wasn't his native language either. But a lot of the comments on the Wagga Wagga page were along the lines of "well basically the guy was saying, don't camp there you'll get flooded out" and Murrumbidgee probably doesn't even mean big water anyway". But nobody involved in the discussion speaks the local dialect, nor do they cite a meaningful reference.

Spelling Revert Question
Why did you revert a spelling correction on the kangaroo page? I changed tactics to tactic but you reverted it back. Why? It seems clear the singular tactic is needed, not the plural tactics; 'another' is singular. Here's the sentence:
- Another defensive tactics described by witnesses is catching the attacking dog with the forepaws and disemboweling it with the hind legs.
Thanks. --SafeLibraries 10:03, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Latin letter template
Please stop from adding Cyrillic letter ze and Cyrillic letter che from Tmplate:Latin_alphabet. --Hello World! 10:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- I know what you meant by borrowing from Cyrillic for Zhuang. However, they are still Cyrillic letters (at least considering the computer encodings). Should they become Latin letters, they should get new encoding spaces. At present stage I considered Zhuang language as "using Latin letters and mixed with two Cyrillics".--Hello World! 09:26, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

access to references for Kwakiutl language?
In your edits to Kwakiutl language, you added multiple references to articles by Franz Boas. Do you personally have access to these articles? I'm specifically interested in "Sketch of the Kwakiutl language" (only because of the title). I assume that article is no longer under copyright, so if you were able to scan it I would be forever indebted. My local library does not have journals dating back to 1900. -Mscnln 18:38, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

flags for subjects
Hi, I see that you've added flags on the entry for subjects. I agree that the page needs improvement, some of the statements are hopelessy convoluted and vague and others are controversial. What were your particular complaints? Wanna help cleaning it up? Neither 18:24, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
Endangered South American languages
Hello,
I saw your work on Itonama language.
Am starting a table for list of endangered languages, based on the UNESCO Red Book. Of course many things need to be done; but would like initial comments:
Thanks, --Ling.Nut 01:07, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi Ptcamn,
Thanks for the give-n-take on Talk:List of Australian Aboriginal languages. At the risk of repeating myself, I really do think we both have the same goal -- better coverage of languages.
Let me know if your thinking ever evolves on the topic of our discussion. I still think having separate lists is the way to go, but am amenable to other options. :-)
Cheers, --Ling.Nut 00:12, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi,
- Did you read what I posted today (immediately above your post, which came later)? What I said was, "OK." :-) I also said feel free to move stuff from my user page to the main one. I'll do so too, from time to time. :-) I'm a little surprised you were still debating after I had already agreed to your plan. :-)
- Cheers, --Ling.Nut 22:30, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
