[edit]Please stop adding images that are obviously not your own work. File:Spassky ji. jpg.jpg, for example is clearly taken from the Britannica entry on Spassky. I have nominated several of your uploads for deletion at the Commons. -- Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:07, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- Sir, I am a new editor. I didn't know about it that you also have to mention source of photos. I apologize for this. Could you please tell me how to add photos properly. Ps103ankit (talk) 16:18, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not an expert, but very simply at WikiCommons you should not upload any image that you did not personally take yourself, or for which you own the copyright or are sure is in the public domain. Everything there can only be uploaded if it has a free license; that is, the copyright holder has given permission for it to be used. On Wikipedia (but not the WikiCommons) you can upload copyrighted images under fair use, but only in very limited circumstances. For chess players who are living, you cannot upload any fair use images, as there is always a chance that a free license one could be become available.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 16:28, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot sir! I will talk care of this thing from next time. Ps103ankit (talk) 16:31, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- You need to take care of it now, not just next time. You have been notified on Commons about files you have uploaded there. You should go to the discussion page(s) there and state that these are not your own work and should be deleted. Whpq (talk) 17:37, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm Whpq. I noticed that you recently removed content from Talk:Joël Lautier without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Article talk pages are a record of the development of the article. Do not remove other's comments. Whpq (talk) 12:43, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, I will explain properly while removing any content. But those photos which I added were not mine. I took them from Wikimedia commons. Ps103ankit (talk) 13:02, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Why did you remove photos which are not copyright violations? I took them from Wikimedia Commons. Please check properly before removing any photo. Ps103ankit (talk) 13:08, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- No. This warning was about removing article talk page contents like you did here. To put it bluntly, don't do that. As for the images, you uploaded the same images that previously were deleted as copyright violations. They are not freely licensed and simply acknowledging the source or copyright holder does not make it a free license. -- Whpq (talk) 13:11, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Sir, I am in a dilemma. How to use images for topics for which you have only 2 or 3 images on Wikimedia Commons and those photos are not appropriate for a section. I am editing Joël Lautier from past one week. I have changed it from a stub to a decent article. But now I can't add photos. Rules are very strict. Sagar Shah is a founder of ChessBase India and he promotes chess in India through his website and a YouTube channel. Amruta Mokal is her wife. Why they will object to use of their photos? Also, how do we know that a photo is not freely licensed?
- And can I use a screenshort of a youtube video for image. Ps103ankit (talk) 13:23, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- One of the 5 pillars of Wikipedia is that content is freely licensed. If there are no free photos to use, then there are no free photos to use. It is pointless to speculate if the copyright holder would object. If it is not freely licensed, then you can't use it except under very narrow circumstances as outlined in policy on non-free content. And before you head down that path, the images you have uploaded and which have been deleted as copyright violations would almost certainly fail to qualify for non-free content usage. Freely licensed images almost always will have an explicit license statement identifying the license. As for a Youtube screenshot, some Youtube videos are under a free license but you need to check for that in the video description where it will have a license link indicating reuse is allowed. Whpq (talk) 13:43, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot sir for your suggestion! Sir, can I review a Good Article Nomination or not. I have only 200 edits. I will not disturb you after this with another question. Ps103ankit (talk) 13:57, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- I would strongly recommend against reviewing Good Article nominations given your lack of experience at Wikipedia, as demonstrated above with your having thought it was okay to include those non-free photos in the Joël Lautier article. (Yes, rules are very strict, and people reviewing GA nominations need to understand them and how they are applied to articles.) There are plenty of ways to contribute to Wikipedia while gaining a lot more experience and understanding on how things work. Have fun! BlueMoonset (talk) 14:08, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- @BlueMoonset I am really sorry for my mistake. Thanks a lot sir for your kind suggestion! Ps103ankit (talk) 14:11, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- I've added a welcome message at the top of your talk page with useful links. I would also suggest you make use of the WP:Teahouse as a place where new editors can ask questions. Whpq (talk) 14:41, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Signature
[edit]Hello again. I noticed that you are trying to copy my signature. But WP:SIGFORGE says that you cannot use the exact same signature of another user, so you might need to change it a bit. The Wikipedia:Signature tutorial can help you in finding the right sign. Thanks, Kpddg (talk) 17:13, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kpddg (talk) Oh, I'm sorry. I really liked your signature. I will change it. Btw, thanks for these links. Ps103ankit (talk) 17:59, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Ps103ankit! Your additions to Sadgati have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 22:55, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
