Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:21, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

About Training in the Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit

Hello Pratyya, I have seen that you are a trainer in the Wikipedia Counter Vandalism Unit and both of our time zones are same. I am very much willing to fight vandalism in Wikipedia. Although I am aware about it but being trained by a veteran Wikipedian will be really very helpful. I am ready for the training when you will have the time. So, please be my trainer on Wikipedia's Counter Vandalism Unit and thus oblige thereby. - Sourov0000 (talk) 14:14, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

re: Sledge Hammer! Trust Me - I Know What I Am Doing character tagline

Greetings Pratyya - you edit suggests to me that you are not familiar with the Sledge Hammer! television show that aired on the ABC (United States) television network during 1986 through 1988 Trust Me - I Know What I Am Doing! is the tagline of the main character (Sledge Hammer) that he oft repeated through every episode of the television show.[1][2] Bee Cliff River Slob (talk) 14:26, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

@Bee Cliff River Slob: I'm absolutely sorry for my mistake. Due to a bad internet connection here STiki is responding lately. That's why your edit got reverted. I'm really sorry.--Pratyya (Hello!) 14:39, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Not a problem, Pratyya - I watched Sledge Hammer! when the program when it originally aired on ABC and thought that it featured some very funny and entertaining satire about American politics during the late 1980s.Bee Cliff River Slob (talk) 14:48, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Article for creation

Hi Pratyya, I have submitted a new article on BCS (Administration) but you did not accept it saying that it's a section of Bangladesh Civil Service. Yes, it is. You know Bangladesh Civil Service has 29 different cadres. BCS (Administration) is the most important of those 29. I am trying to create separate article on each of those cadres. One can write several pages on each cadre. So I think, each of the cadres can be a separate article. I am resubmitting the article for your consideration. "Tahleel, 07.10.2013"

Okay. I understand your thinking and also appreciate them. But you need to make sure that they are notable enough at Wikipedia and you have reliable sources. Good luck--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:45, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

RE: Sten-gun edit I made

Sorry to have done it as crudely as I did, but it seems to me that entries for free/floating bolt automatic firearms should not be included under "Sten" guns, as this is a subset of that type of firearm.GeoffAyres77 (talk) 04:19, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Articles for creation/Buymore Limited‎ Review

Hi Pratyya,

Kindly shade some light on what else I can do to improve the notability of this article :)

"Please improve the submission's referencing, so that the information is verifiable, and there is clear evidence of why the subject is notable and worthy of inclusion..." -That, is clear, but I am not sure what other sources I may need to cite. To be honest, there's not much to include for the moment except the 2 sources I referenced. Thanks.

Better source request for File:Chitrojogotlogo.png

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 03:11, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Pakhal (Bangladeshi telefilm), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bengali (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 11:29, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I've noticed that you are a trainer as listed here and I am interested in signing up for the course. Thanks! Have a nice day! Darylgolden (talk) 06:18, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

If you want me to train you then Yes. But I'll not be able to give you time before 15 October, cause our biggest religious festival is going on and I'm not too active here. We'll start from 15 October. Okay? @Darylgolden:--Pratyya (শারদীয় শুভেচ্ছা) 13:52, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Sure! However, I will only be free in your preferred time slot until the end of this week. I believe that won't a very big problem though - looking at the syllabus, I believe we do not have to be in the same time slot for the 5 day monitoring and the final exam can be set up a day before and I would take the exam, and then you can "mark" it. How does that sound? Have a nice day! Darylgolden (talk) 23:09, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I would like to apologise for not being able to complete the practical test over such a long amount of time - I have already found 10 users that I warned, but I couldn't find any to report to WP:AIV. Have a nice day! Darylgolden (talk) 07:52, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Dear Darylgolden, you don't worry. First complete the 20 reverts. It'll help you to be experienced with vandalism and warning. After these reverts if you find 2 AIV then it's great. But if you don't find then I'll consider. Just tell me after you've made those reverts. If I find you can do good and correct AIV reports then I'll consider you there. --Pratyya (Hello!) 08:03, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
I have already completed the 20 reverts, but I forgot to link the article reverts in my notepad document (I thought it was warning only):P Once I have done that, I will add that to the page. Thanks for your swift reply. Have a nice day! Darylgolden (talk) 08:06, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
I apparently thought that I only had to revert 10 edits. But I have reverted enough since then, so it's fine :) Have a nice day! Darylgolden (talk) 08:26, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
I have made a few reports before the course began - can I use those instead? Darylgolden(talk) 08:28, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
All right. Considering ya. But try to find one in the meantime. If you can't find then I'll consider you. @Darylgolden: --Pratyya (Hello!) 13:49, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

@Darylgolden: Your one report is right. Now you can add one of your previous reports. I just wanted to know that whether you are going right or wrong. --Pratyya (Hello!) 14:22, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

I was wondering if perhaps we could go on to the next section while I try to find a few pages to protect? Thanks. Darylgolden(talk) 02:01, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Actually @Darylgolden: As I said earlier that my exam is going on. So I'm not active at WP these days. So if I still move onto next lesson I'll not be able to check your test. For example this is my 4th edit in 4 days. So it's better if you kindly wait till 5 December. In the mean time you can check for protections. And I'm sorry --Pratyya (Hello!) 09:50, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi, I'm wondering if you forgot about my CVUA course. Judging by your contributions, you seem fairly active now, so would you mind if you updated my CVUA? Thanks! Darylgolden(talk) 23:28, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
@Darylgolden: I haven't forgot that. Actually my exam ended yesterday. That's why I haven't edited CVUA. Anyway I've moved to next lesson.--Pratyya (Hello!) 03:41, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Smith Carbine

Ref: your reversal of recent additions. I am not objecting to your removal of the primary picture as it showed up as a small thumbnail. I am certainly not going to revert your edit as I am determined not to participate in Wikipedia edit wars. The wording of the delete message however indicated that it was regarded as possible vandalism. This was not the case- it was merely an attempt to place a picture of a Smith Carbine where none was present before. The other picture showed the breech open for loading and was unobjectionable by any standard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael E. Cumpston (talkcontribs) 16:22, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter on 16 October 2013

VisualEditor is still being updated every Thursday. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at Mediawiki during the previous week. If you haven't done so already, you can turn on VisualEditor by going to your preferences and choosing the item, "MediaWiki:Visualeditor-preference-enable".

The reference dialog for all Wikipedias, especially the way it handles citation templates, is being redesigned. Please offer suggestions and opinions at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog. (Use your Wikipedia username/password to login there.) You can also drag and drop references (select the reference, then hover over the selected item until your cursor turns into the drag-and-drop tool). This also works for some templates, images, and other page elements (but not yet for text or floated items). References are now editable when they appear inside a media item's caption (bug 50459).

There were a number of miscellaneous fixes made: Firstly, there was a bug that meant that it was impossible to move the cursor using the keyboard away from a selected node (like a reference or template) once it had been selected (bug 54443). Several improvements have been made to scrollable windows, panels, and menus when they don't fit on the screen or when the selected item moves off-screen. Editing in the "slug" at the start of a page no longer shows up a chess pawn character ("♙") in some circumstances (bug 54791). Another bug meant that links with a final punctuation character in them broke extending them in some circumstances (bug 54332). The "page settings" dialog once again allows you to remove categories (bug 54727). There have been some problems with deployment scripts, including one that resulted in VisualEditor being broken for an hour or two at all Wikipedias (bug 54935). Finally, snowmen characters ("☃") no longer appear near newly added references, templates and other nodes (bug 54712).

Looking ahead: Development work right now is on rich copy-and-paste abilities, quicker addition of citation templates in references, setting media items' options (such as being able to put images on the left), switching into wikitext mode, and simplifying the toolbar. A significant amount of work is being done on other languages during this month. If you speak a language other than English, you can help with translating the documentation.

For other questions or suggestions, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting problem reports at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback and other ideas at Wikipedia talk:VisualEditor. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:58, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Evaluating AFC submissions that no longer exist

How do you evaluate the accuracy of rating of deleted AFCs, as you did with many of Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/October 2013 Backlog Elimination Drive/78.26's?

Were you able to do these re-reviews before the AFC page disappeared? If so, I'm glad you got in under the wire before the pages were deleted, as it provides the reviewer with valuable feedback.

I ask because if, hypothetically, I decline a page for lack of notability and it's later speedy-deleted due to a copyvio, it would be helpful to me as a reviewer if someone FAILED me rather than PASSED me on a re-review, on the grounds that I missed the copyright violation. This is even more true if the submission, as written, included reliable-source references that clearly demonstrated notability and I missed not only the copyright violation but I clearly misjudged the notability of the topic. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 18:57, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

@Davidwr: What you are saying is right and I thought that 2 days ago. That's why from 16 of this month I've stopped re-reviewing. Cause I think with them I'll get a barnstar but I'll not be helpful for WP. The drive was started to clear the backlog at AFC. If I get my counties by re-reviews that'll not help AFC. But I want to help WP. That's why in this drive I'll only review articles not re-review. Cheers.--Pratyya (Hello!) 14:15, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I generally re-review 1) anything that has 1 "fail" and no 2nd review, 2) any reviewer that has less than 10-20% of his reviews reviewed, 3) for reviewers who have a significant percentage of failures, I raise #2 high enough so that I'm confident bad reviews aren't slipping through un-re-reviewed. I also try to make sure my "review count" is way higher than my "re-review" count - typically 5-10x as high.
I am still curious though, did you do the re-reviews on the now-deleted submissions before they were deleted? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:38, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Lukashenka

Aliaksandr Lukašenka is true. The latest name was Alexandr Lukashenko, which was transliterated from Russian language. It is not true. In Belarus people use belarusian language and Aliaksandr Lukašenka is true. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.127.117.233 (talk) 15:23, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

  • In Belarusian language it's Аляксандр Лукашэнка, not Aliaksandr Lukašenka (Belarusian uses Cyrillic letters) while his family name is of clear Ukraininan origin anyway. And since his politics is pretty well covered in reliable English-language sources, the major factor influencing spelling of the name in English Wikipedia is how it's spelled in English-language sources rather than its transliteration from Russian, Belarusian or any "native language" (especially including letters which are not in alphabet of any of these, including English). Retirement

Hey Pratyya, hope you are alright. Anyways, I will retire on Thursday, because I don't have time to edit Wikipedia and also greatly lost interest. But don't worry, I will return, but don't know when. Thanks for being such a great and kind friend.--Jionpedia 19:03, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Revision

Dear Pratyya

Thanx after seeing ur contributions and edits. The changes I made or I intend to make is based on solid input. Khwaja is actually a honorific title in Sufism. nowadays we use as it as a name an title also. Illtutmish was an ardent follower of Khwaja Qutbuddin Baktiar Kaki R.A. and both of them have the same dream. Illtutmish narrated the dream to Khwaja Qutbuddin Baktiyar Kaki who guided him to the refrerred place and that is where Hauz e Shamsi was built. If , you have acess kindly refer to " Delhi ke Bais(22) Khwaja)" a book I forgot about its publishers name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Suhailrafat (talkcontribs) 06:35, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Was referred by TeaHouse I urgently need an article added to wikipedia

Hi TeaHouse noticed that my article for DJ Maysin was not accepted, I submitted a better written one as D.J. Maysin and am waiting for it to be reviewed. He really deserves to be on Wikipedia for all of his notability. The one that was denied was because I had copied and pasted words directly from his site http://DjMaysin.com if you could make it for me so it would be perfect I would so appreciate it, im his personal assistant and I want to impress him cuz he's so busy djing for thousands of people, he's headling on nov 5 for over 15,000 people so I know he doesn't have the time for all this, he already tried to figure all this out but he just got frustrated and asked me to do it. please message me here or contact@DjMaysin.com 757.727.3025 98.141.36.69 (talk) 10:21, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, (...) I don't know your name. Tell me your article's name (If it's in Articles for creation space). I'll find whether Mr. Maysin has notability or not. Just on check purpose. If you want you can mail me. Last I'll love it if I could help you. --Pratyya (Hello!) 12:46, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Good news! Monsters University has passed the GA review!--Jionpedia 11:48, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

The Signpost: 23 October 2013

Hi, I'm writing you for your a couple of things about talk page on Wikivoyage.

  1. That page use an not existing template (i.e. Round corners). Being the only page that use it, there's no need of creating it, so I've commented it to avoid to increase the requested template list. Yesterday you have updated your page, re-introducing it. I've commented again. Please don't re-introduce it one more time.
  2. I've left you a question on September, and I've seen that you have deleted. An answer to that question would be appreciated.

Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 06:58, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Hey @Andyrom75:, You should write here that time. I told on that notice. Anyway, your question is yes. I can help you with Bengali Phrasebook. And I'm sorry. Cause I used a script to update my talk pages.--Pratyya (Hello!) 07:11, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your understanding on point 1, and your will of collaboration on point 2.
If you think that you can spend some time on the next days on it, I can create now a void "template page" for the Bengali Phrasebook, so you can fill it with the translated words/sentences. Let me know, --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:54, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
For your convenience I've created the Bengali Phrasebook page. It's almost empty, but as you have said, if you are willing to contribute to its growth, it would be really appreciated.
I've prefilled few words, just to let you understand how the overall template works.
Let's see the first row: ; sì (formale): Ji ('' '')
  1. The first part (before the semicolumn ":") is in Italian and it's always present in each row of the model. In brackets I've added the formal/unformal "tag" because I've understood that in Bengali there's two separate ways to communicate. So feel free to add it when needed.
  2. The second part (after the semicolumn ":" and before the brackets) is in Bengali with the "english alphabet" in order to be read by us. Feel free to add also how it's written with "bengali alphabet".
  3. The third part (within the brackets) you can left it blank. It represent how it is spelled by an Italian person using the Italian phonems (i.e. sounds). So I suppose that only an Italian person can do it.
Feel free to contact me on my talk page on Wikivoyage for any kind of question.
See you soon, --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:30, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Give me some time. I'll make it bigger. @Andyrom75:--Pratyya (Hello!) 08:41, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Ok, maybe try to change now 1/2 rows just to be sure that we are in line on how to fill it, than you can proceed autonomously afterwords. --Andyrom75 (talk) 08:54, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
@Andyrom75: working on m:Wikivoyage. Anyway, I wrote the script that Pratyya Ghosh used. I should've written a terms of use/disclaimer before making it public. Sorry. πr2 (tc) 15:37, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
@PiRSquared17: don't worry. It wasn't anything unrecoverable ;-) At the end it has been a chance to get in touch with a Bengali native speaker that has promised to help with the phrasebook on it:voy ... I juse hope he'll honor his vows ;-P --Andyrom75 (talk) 19:50, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
I've corrected the "position" of the word (see here the differences). Clearly I don't know Bengali :-P so I've used an online phrasebook to find those word, and I don't know if they are correct and which are the right transliteration (writing Bengali with the Italian/English alphabet characters) associated to each word. Please check it.
After the check, try to add 1/2 words more, so we'll check together if this time we are in line. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:17, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
I just want to confirm you that your latest contribution on the phrasebook are fine! :-) Thanks and please, keep updating it. --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:28, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay @Andyrom75: I wanted to be sure whether it's fine.--Pratyya (Hello!) 14:32, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm not sure what do you mean with "upper part". If you are referring to "Introduzione al bengalese", the answer is "no", because it's just the introduction already written in Italian. All the rest should be translated. --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:39, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks @Andyrom75:--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:07, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Edit summary

Hi. I saw this edit summary. That page - RfA - is not about me, so you do not need to put my username there. I want to hear why you put my usernamr there. Thanks. --레비ReviDiscussSUL Info 07:17, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

@Hym411: I just don't know how your name came there........ There's no need to put your name there and I know that clearly. I believe by mistake my browsers saved edit summary came there. I supported you on commons, remember. But I'm really sorry for the mistake.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:23, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
Yeah,I remember your support on LRR.
It's ok, I was just curious. :) --레비ReviDiscussSUL Info 13:58, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pratyya. I appreciate your enthusiasm to participate in discussions on the English Wikipedia, but I do feel I must attempt to point out that perhaps your line of questioning may possibly be confusing. Indeed, it did certainly confuse me, and I am a native English speaker of some 64 years standing with a thorough academic career in linguistics. You are of course most welcome to participate in discussions, but I would beg you to consider whether your contributions in such areas are always clear, coherent, and helpful. I am always ready to render assistance, guide, and advise wherever and whenever I can - please do not hesitate to ask me on my talk page if you ever have any questions. Happy editing! Regards, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 22:50, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Dear Kudpung, thanks for your intention to help me. Now I talked with Mdann52 at IRC yesterday. When I told him he said that he understood... Anyway I'll talk to him one more time. As everybody's getting confused maybe it's my fault. So I'm sorry for this. At last I'll never ever hesitate to ask help from you. --Pratyya (Hello!) 13:27, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
