Speedy deletion nomination of Reintjes gearbox

Reintjes unveils hybrid gearbox for AHTS vessels

German transmission manufacturer Reintjes has unveiled the LAF 6766, a large-scale hybrid gearbox well suited for OSVs with heavy power demands such as anchor handling tugs. Developed for controllable-pitch propeller systems and featuring adjustable power take-off/power take-in operations (PTO/PTI), the gearbox has been designed for an output rating of 5,350kW at 900rpm in ice-free operation. Additionally, hydraulically operated clutches enable easy switching between the different operation modes. “The LAF 6766 unit’s PTI mode allows for slow manoeuvring, for example in a harbour, while the generators drive the electric motor on the gearbox. Additional generator power is fed into the ship’s grid to cover electricity requirements on board,” commented Reintjes. “In dynamic positioning, one of the shaft systems is operated with the diesel engine, with the generator being driven in parallel which, supplies energy for the PTI motor on the second shaft generator. This saves fuel and reduces wear.” For operations with large power demands, such as towing an oil rig, the gearbox can run in a “booster mode”. In this mode, the diesel engines operate together and their combined power drives the AHTS vessel. All four modes of the gearbox’s operation are easily switched via the hydraulic clutches, enabling the vessel to optimise its power train and make full use of the gearbox.
