Hello

[edit]

Please go to talk page for further information. Indian is not an ethnicity!--Misssss (talk) 13:15, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here you see the ethnic groups of India. They are different peoples in one country. Not one people in one country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Ethnic_Groups_of_India I'm not a Tamil btw. --Misssss (talk) 17:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's not only about language, but about culture as a whole. Tamils have different language and culture than Andhraites and other ethnicities in India. Same goes with Hindi people, Punjabi or Bengalis. This is a very simple thing. Stop making such disruptive edits like "Dravidian" please. This can be considered as vandalism. --Misssss (talk) 20:45, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't say I'm a Dravidian. I'm a Malayalee. That's the point. --Misssss (talk) 21:45, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of course it's not correct. And you know that very well. --Misssss (talk) 21:57, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, adding content without citing a reliable source, as you did with this edit to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources, please take this opportunity to add references to the article.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:03, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Venkatraman Ramakrishnan. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. When in dispute with another editor you should first try to discuss controversial changes to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. Should that prove unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. Please stop the disruption, otherwise you may be blocked from editing. Pontificalibus (talk) 21:50, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is your last warning. You will be blocked from editing the next time you make a personal attack, as you did with this edit to User talk:Misssss.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:59, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew Nathan Chinese Name

[edit]

Hi Pranabnaik;

I appreciate your attention to detail at Andrew J. Nathan and your wanting to get this right, but I'm not clear what your objection is.

With just a moment's work, I found several biographical articles with the Chinese name supplied: Stapleton Roy and Arthur Hummel, Jr., so there is good precedent. The policy in WP:Lead_section#Alternative names says the subject's name should be in English, but that a foreign version of the name can then be given in the article.

I'm not sure what (or why) you Googled, for the best authority would be the WorldCat listings of the Chinese translations: WorldCat Search Andrew Nathan/Chinese Language which show his Chinese name to be 黎安友.

I won't change anything back yet, so let me know if I have missed anything.

All the best ch (talk) 20:37, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick reply on my Talk Page and your more detailed explanation of your concern. The Wikipedia policy page on names lined above shows that Wikipedia accepts the insertion of foreign names. The second link is to WorldCat, an online catalog of books. In this case, the page shows the translations of Prof. Nathan's works into Chinese, with his Chinese name as the author. This is the authority you asked for to show that Prof. Nathan uses this Chinese name.
I'll go ahead and put it back in.
I now see that your concern is that a reader might think that Prof. Nathan is Chinese. But the other examples I give show that Wikipedia does not think that this is a problem. The naming policy I give the link to shows that policy clearly. So we don't have to go into anything else -- the policy is clear.
Although it's not relevant to the question at hand, it is quite common for somebody to have a name both in English, for example, or French or Manchu, for that matter, and in Chinese as well (I have an English, a Chinese, and a Japanese name myself).
Would it help if I also added the translations so as to show how his Chinese name is used? I want you to be satisfied.
All the best. ch (talk) 22:20, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Disco Deewane, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pop (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Young Montalbano edit warring

[edit]

Pranabnaik, you seem to be edit warring over the first name of Montalbano. If you add something to WP that is contentious it is up to you to cite a reliable source to confirm that it is correct. If the name that you claim is correct is in one of the books then please quote the title and page number so that it can be checked but do not WP:edit war. Martin Hogbin (talk) 18:35, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be engaged in an edit war with one or more editors. Although repeatedly reverting or undoing another editor's contributions may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, and often creates animosity between editors. Instead of edit warring, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to lose editing privileges. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a loss of editing privileges. Thank you.

Notice of Edit warring noticeboard discussion

[edit]

Information icon Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. Thank you.

You've been warned you may be blocked the next time you change the name of the 'Salvo' character unless you've previously obtained a clear consensus on Talk for the change. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 04:28, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Young Montalbano, again

[edit]

Hello
You seem to have gotten yourself involved in an edit war on this page, which is never a good idea.
Just to clarify the issue, Salvo is Montalbano's given name (these people ought to know): I had assumed it was a diminutive of Salvatore, but this (and this) show that it is a given name in itself. And Salvuccio is a pet name, as from a father to a son (see here).
As I have seen the programme, and read the books, I can say that (AFAIR) Montalbano's father is the only person who calls him that; and in Ch9 of Paper Moon, Mimi was referring to his and Beba's son, whom they named after Salvo, his godfather.
But whether I had seen the series or not, Martin's revert, and his request for you to provide a reliable source to back your claim, was entirely correct, and your reaction, to insist on your opinion without discussion or compromise, was not.
It might be worth your trying to put things right with Martin; as we assume good faith the chances are it'll work out, and even if not you will be better off for the attempt.
In any event thank you for your many contributions and I hope you have less strife in future. Regards, Swanny18 (talk) 22:56, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No Pran it isn't a threat, it's an observation. There's nothing wrong with apologizing when you are wrong, and people are generally better thought of for doing so. Like someone once said, “we become taller when we bow” (or to put it another way, "it takes a big man to say sorry"). But is entirely up to you what you do about this.
As for “bullying”, I only came here to make it clear to you, as you seemed not to know, that you were mistaken in your premise. You have already been told (twice) that what you did about it was wrong; I was merely suggesting a way for you to put things right. Over to you...
