Rabi and Kharif

It was nice to receive your message. I thank you for your interest in India. Perhaps you are referring to these words in the official website of district administration of Hardoi [1]: All three main crops Rabi, Kharif & Jaiyaj are the main crops of the district. Most of the farmers grow paddy,sugarcane,wheat, vegetable, pulses and oilseeds in their fields. I would try to explain - In India most of the crops grown are divided in two major groups, namely Kharif crops and Rabi crops, and these terms denote the two major groups of crops shown and grown during particulars seasons in a number of Indian states. Kharif (variously spelt including as Khariff) season would generally cover months of summer and rains (sown during April-July, and harvested by October). Most important Kharif crop is paddy. Rabi crops are generally sown between October to February and harvested by June. Most important Rabi crop is wheat. With expansion of irrigation and green revolution, traditional pattern of cultivation has changed in India, still paddy and wheat remain the major Kharif and Rabi crops respectively. Other Kharif crops include sugarcane, groundnuts, maize, and a variety of pulses. Other Rabi crops include barley and a variety of oil seeds. As regards Jaiyaj crops, I am not sure, but they may denote crops sown and grown between months of gap arising between Kharif and Rabi crops or vice versa. You claim there is no "real" French diaspora and the statistics on the French people page have no factual basis ? Have you ever been to Lousiana, Quebec, Nouveau-Brunswick (in Canada) ? There is a significant French diaspora (even if not in the same numbers as neighbouring nations). There are several people of ethnic French descent in South America, Italy (Valle D'aosta, Belgium, Switzerland, as well as in North America (including the US). Large numbers of French huguenots, French from Quebec as well as Acadians/Cajuns from eastern Canada (fleeing British persecution) migrated to the US since the 17th century. While Lousiana was still a French posession, numbers of ethnic French from France indeed immigrated there as well. Although the government policy doesn't allow the usage of the term "français de souche", it doesn't go to say the indigenous ethnic French (langue d'oil and langue d'oc peoples) don't exist. Basques, Bretons, Catalans and Corsicans don't identify as ethnic French or even "French" (citizen of France) at all in some cases. With this is mind, there is obviously an idigenous ehtnic group responsible for the creation of the French (Gallo-Latin) culture, language and identity even if government policy does not wish to speak of such a group of people. I mean before the creaton of the republic, it was even forbidden for ethnic French and or any citizen in France not to be a Roman Catholic. With this in mind, to say there is not a unity among the indigenous ethnic French is out of place, even if it is the French Republic government POV (the same POV which wished to see the asssimilation and cultural elimination of other indigenous groups like the Bretons). 69.157.109.6 14:06, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

I will reply to your comments :

• About the supposed French diaspora : I disagree with you on the use of this term. All the people you quote aren't from French origins (see Switzerland as an obvious example, even if they have been closely related to France). As for the others (South America, Louisiana), some of them are definitely from French origins, but it was so long ago, that they don't have anymore linked with France (even if as USA citizens, they affirm their French origins). I think that diaspora is a misused. It's USA-oriented because that the way they see their origins but they are wrong.
• As for the "Français de souche", I think it's just terribly difficult to exhibit them (well it's not a question of governement policy, but it's all about French history and ethnicity). I would like you to define clearly who do you call as "French people" (I mean in this ethnic sense). The fact is they don't exist. You can't define a real French before the WWI because the country was really splitted before that, with different languages (not only in Britanny, Corsica and Basque people, but also North of France, South-East (Savoie, Nice), ...). After WWI, it's also impossible because there have been so many immigration and mixing of population that this term doesn't make sense neither. My point is that they have been united by being ruled by the same people (Kingdom of France and then the Republic) over being united by being a common ethnic group. It's not a common religion, nor a common language which was the cement as for ethnic groups, but a common history as for nations. So, I am waiting for your definition.

Radhanite map

Thanks for your message. I came accross your translation through the link on the English page. While I don't speak French, I am told the translation is very skillfully done. The map you have prepared, while incomplete, is beautiful and vastly superior to the existing one. I would definitely like to see it replace the current map once it is complete. Your points regarding the routes are well-taken. Obviously there is no map existing today that definitively shows the various routes taken by the Radhanites, so I had to create my map based on a number of sources, including ibn Khordadbeh's account, secondary sources, my knowledge of the Silk Road, etc. Regarding the route that goes through southern Iran, into Pakistan, across India and over the Himalayas- this comes from ibn Khordadbeh's statement "Thence they go [overland] to ar-Ramla, visit Damascus, al-Kufa, Baghdad, and al-Basra, cross Ahwaz, Fars, Kirman, Sind, Hind, and arrive in China." Fars and Kirman, as you know, are both in southern Persia. In Elmer Bendiner's book he describes merchants crossing over the Himalayas, loading their cargo onto goats because horses couldn't traverse the mountains. The exact point of crossing over was my own conjecture, based on the description of "crossing Hind", and in light of the absence of topographic overlay on the map I used, perhaps it was ill-chosen. I've taken the map you drew and added some of the trade routes for Central Asia, southern Iran, etc, you can view it at Image:Radhanite1.jpg. Does that look better to you in terms of the course of the routes? I am not a particularly skilled graphic artist so you will probably have to redraw. One question- would it be possible to do the map as a .png instead of a .jpg? That might eliminate some of the distortion I see in the map. Congratulations on having the French version featured! It seems like there might be some info on the French version that isn't on the English version (though my knowledge of French is very limited). "National" football teams

Actually, these teams act like national football teams. They may not be recognized nations, but that doesn't mean they should not be called that, if they consider themselves that. They compete against other nations (or in some cases, against other unrecognized nations). They don't play as provinces or states or whatnot. They've been considered "national" on Wikipedia for some time now. _└ ^OzLawyer / _talk ^┐ 17:21, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I notice that you created a redirect for "New Caledonia football team" to "New Caledonia national football team", and moved "Tahiti national football team" to "Tahiti football team". You may note that both of these entities belong to FIFA, and within France, the country they belong to, they have similar status. Although "Tahiti" is officially "French Polynesia". One cannot be "national" while the other is not. Actually, I'm going to revert your changes removing the "national" from all the articles you have. As noted above, they play as nations (and, actually, by the definition I assume you're using, England (and the other British "home nations") is also not a "real" nation, so we'll have to remove "nation" from that article, as England is part of the independent nation of the United Kingdom). _└ ^OzLawyer / _talk ^┐ 17:31, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

But Wikipedia isn't considering what is and isn't a nation. It's simply presenting what purports to be a national team as a national team. Honestly, England is not a nation, if by nation you mean an internationally recognized country that is usually a member of the United Nations. But nobody would try to move "England national football team" to "England football team", now would they? If Greenland, which is not an internationally recognized country but a posession of Denmark, plays against other nations, and calls their team the national team of Greenland, then that is how we present them on Wikipedia. Okay, so let me get this straight. First you care about whether something is or is not a nation, but ignore the fact that there are several teams in FIFA which are not nations being called nations. Then you care about whether people are calling something a national team but claim that even though people aren't calling New Caledonia a nation you have to leave it being called that because some referendum on independence came up 50/50, and finally, well, finally what? What's the definition of "nation"? Independent nation? By the criteria used on Wikipedia of what a "country" is, "French Polynesia" is one, while England is not. Okay, there are some instances where a team may not be considered "national", although, for instance, I cannot see how Tahiti, which is considered a country on List of countries, and is a FIFA member, should not be a nation (that's like saying that Wales does not have a national team). French Polynesia is clearly a nation. Yes, it "belongs" to France, but that doesn't mean it's not a nation. However, even where you may be correct, the proper thing to do is to discuss it somewhere where many people will see it and be able to comment on it. I don't know what else we could do. Do you want to be in a constant edit war? As for your question about Guadeloupe and Martinique being nations byt not England and Wales, I never said that I would want the French ones over the British ones. In fact, I do not consider that Guadeloupe or Martinique are nations. Since they're integral parts of France, in the same way that England and Wales are integral parts of the United Kingdom, they are not nations I (actually, let's use "countries", since it's a better term). New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna, however, are a different matter. As non-integral parts of France, and in a sense, more "foreign possessions", they have somewhat more of a right for self-determination, and more of an identity outside of France. In the British sphere, Bermuda and Gibraltar would fit the bill. In Denmark, the Faroes and Greenland. On Allegations of apartheid

You wrote:

I don't mean that you didn't create them by (?) good faith, feeling that the Israeli article was unfair. I just think you created them in opposition to POINT and that needs to be punished. I talked about the fact that I was French to explain my possible bias. As for the Israeli apartheid comparing to the French one, I just don't put the same weight on allegations made by two Peace Nobel Prices and a good number of very recognised people (and roughly 200 000 answers on Google) comparing to pseudo-allegations made by a group of left-wing extremists (roughly 242 answers on Google / American has around 200 000 answers on Google as well but was deleted). 1. The figures you mention are radii, not masses.
2. In the reference, [5], which you cite, the middle paragraph of the second column on p. 520 is about IK Pegasi, and gives a radius of 0.006 solar radii for IK Pegasi B. The two succeeding paragraphs, which continue on to the first column of p. 521, pertain to HD 15638. (The second paragraph starts with the phrase Following the approach outlined above, for HR 8210. This means that HR 15638 is being analyzed with the same method which was used for HR 8210.) The second paragraph gives a radius of 0.0091 solar radii for HD 15638B.

I am translating the article into French and there is a sentence I don't understand : " Models fitted to the dust distribution around Vega indicate that it is a 120 AU-radius circular disk viewed from nearly pole-on". I don't understand what the "viewed from nearly pole-on" mean in English. Is the disk seen transversaly or is the line of sight parallel to the disk plane ? Does pole designate the "star's pole" ?
