Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Poco Poco Records. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page The Daydream Club, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. — Amkgp 💬 15:58, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Amkgp, thanks for the message. I'm not getting paid to do this, just a very poorly chosen name. Sorry I'm making such a mess of it. Other than the name mishap were the edits ok? What was it I could improve on? I was going to try again and just use boxes with the album titles and dates, no quotes or details about the album so no need for referencing publications or linking to websites which seemed to be an issue. Do you think that would be better? Cheers Poco Poco Records (talk) 19:21, 1 December 2020 (UTC)pocopocorecords[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page.

Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:41, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Jim, I think I need to change my name. Poco Poco Records does not exist, it is made up. I am not getting paid to do this though it's beginning to feel like work lol. I am happy to change the name if I'm allowed, in fact I'm regretting ever choosing that one but when I made my first contributions years ago it was to The Daydream Clubs page and I had wrongly thought you had to be affiliated somehow with pages you edit. I didn't know until the flags today that this wasn't the case. I think the main issue is because I am editing under the name poco poco records so I have in essence made this overly complicated for myself. I wish I was quicker at all this but I'm literally having to read all the help sections to try to even reply to you. I was actually in the process of undoing what had been flagged earlier today so that it was simply tables showing release titles and dates of releases, no blurb or article quotes. It's really complicated, for me at least, but trying to learn and improve. This is the first time I have tried to use talk so hope this works. Would I be better to try and change my username or just create an account in my real name? Thanks in advance for reading this and hopefully pointing me in the right direction as to how best to proceed. Poco Poco Records (talk) 19:13, 1 December 2020 (UTC)pocopocorecords[reply]
This website proves that Poco Poco Records does exist. Why are you trying to mislead me? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:38, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Genuinely not trying to mislead you, I just mean that I am not Poco Poco Records. I chose that name because of the band. I said I really loved the band and wanted to contribute to their page but thought I was SUPPOSED to be affiliated so chose that name so I would look proper.
I honestly just wanted to make their page better and I was trying to do that by copying formats from other bands I like.
You wrote "Poco Poco Records does not exist, it is made up." That was a lie. You cannot edit Wikipedia with a business as your account name, or any other unacceptable name. Read the block notice carefully, follow the instructions exactly, and tell the truth. Another administrator will consider your request. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:07, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have read the block notice carefully. I chose the name poco poco records to appear to be connected to a band that I love and wanted to make contributions for on Wikipedia because, at the time, when I created my username, I had thought only those people could contribute. I realise now that is not the case and can clearly see why that would be a COI to an encyclopaedic page. It's a wonderful rule and makes Wikipedia a safer, more transparent space which is awesome and why we all love it. I can only apologise for this whole mess and tell you the honest truth that I am not a Record Label nor was I intending to make edits of a promotional nature. I had attempted to copy the format of another band I love called Little Dragon in order to make their page more streamlined and in keeping. In the edits I was working on before I was blocked I had taken away the blurb and simply created tables which looked much neater and would, I am sure, have aleyed any suspicion of promotion. Anyway, I'm exhausted. I'll leave it with you.
You have not formulated your unblock request properly. You must use the format starting and ending with the double curly brackets in the precise format shown, including unblock-spamun. Please do so. That will draw the attention of another administrator. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:07, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Requested username:

Request reason:

I am not getting paid to edit. I chose a name related to band I love thinking you had to be affiliated with them to edit their info. Obviously in hindsight I see how ridiculous a notion this was as the impartiality of Wikipedia is what makes it a safe and reliable source. I would really like to continue to be able to edit and learn, and would hope to put any concerns at ease with my future contributions. Please assume good intentions as that is what I come with. Thanks to everyone for their time reviewing this and apologies for all the confusion and upset.

Decline reason:

As an aside Wikipedia is actually not a reliable source. Saying that "Poco Poco Records does not exist" is a very specific error to make if you chose the name only because you like the band whose music the label publishes; I would expect that you would have chosen the name of the band itself if you like the band- so I have difficulty believing that your only connection to the band is that you like it. 331dot (talk) 10:21, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi 331dot, when I said that "Poco Poco Records does not exist" I simply meant that I do not exist as a label, that I made that up. My reply was poorly worded. I chose the name of the label over the band itself as I thought that would be the most reputable affiliation in order to edit the bands wikipedia page. I'm pretty sure that a label would know all of the COI stuff and wouldn't set up an account in their own name. Gutted by your decision but I get how you've come to it. Is there any way I can get in good standing again or help you reconsider your decision? WendyBird3 (talk) 10:53, 2 December 2020 (UTC)WendyBird3[reply]
