Rila Monastery Nature Park
[edit]Greetings, Pine! I have recently improved the article about the Rila Monastery Nature Park, which you have copyedited a little than a month ago. I hope that you will be willing to take another look at the article because I am aware that my style of writing is not particularly elegant. If you are interested in the protected areas of Bulgaria, you may also wish to go through the article about the Strandzha Nature Park, which I intend to nominate for a GA or a FA and the only reason I still haven't done so is my English prose. Best regards, --Gligan (talk) 17:31, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Gligan, at the moment I lack the time to do a thorough copyedit of the article. I would like to suggest that you contact the Wikimedians of Bulgaria User Group, which is a Wikimedia affiliate organization. Their members might be willing to help you with that article. I appreciate the nice photos that you added to the article and I nominated the Griffon Vulture image at English Wikipedia Featured Picture candidates. Regards, --Pine✉ 23:58, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

UW Visiting Scholars
[edit]Hi Pine,
A colleague told me you had asked about (or expressed confusion about) UW's Visiting Scholars position on Wikimedia-l. After I subscribed and responded, I was told it may have actually been the Cascadia list. Having now resolved to reply only to lists I'm already subscribed to, I thought I'd just follow up here :) Did you happen to see the reply? --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:04, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Ryan (Wiki Ed), I didn't get a reply from you in my inbox and there wasn't an email from you waiting in the Cascadia list's moderation queue, so perhaps you sent it to Wikimedia-l and it's held for moderation there. Would you please repost your email here? --Pine✉ 02:52, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, I had sent it to Wikimedia-l based on incorrect information :/ Here's the primary text of the reply:
- Since the Wikipedia Library is growing rapidly and Wiki Ed wanted to dedicate time and resources to grow this program in particular, Wiki Ed will be running Visiting Scholars in the US and Canada. But that hand-off only just happened with the announcements [last] week, with five institutions already ready to go (see posts on the Wiki Ed blog and WMF blog), so I want to try to apologize in advance for what I'm sure will be a few hiccups/areas of confusion.
- Pine, regarding why you weren't in the loop about UW: Though Jake or Alex could probably say more definitively, it looks like the person who signed up to supervise the position, Paul Constantine, was contacted by the OCLC representative working with the Wikipedia Library. She wouldn't likely have known how to find out if Wikipedians are there first. You may want to connect with Paul, but in the future I'd be more than happy to work with you. Since we work with so many universities at Wiki Ed, we're pretty committed to maintaining a database of people we can talk to about this or that at different institutions.
- Then there's the implicit question of why no UW contact was listed for the UW position. I've centralized the application process to have them go through me rather than going directly to the institutional contacts. That way I can do some screening, looking for the kinds of things a non-Wikipedian would have difficulty determining. It's also because I'd like to do more recruitment in the other direction, reaching out to Wikipedians to apply even if there's no open position and/or having conversations with people who want access to research materials. If I'm managing the applications, I can better make those connections. So the reason the contact isn't there is because I wanted to avoid the confusion of having a second email address someone might accidentally send their resume to. Upon reflection, it probably would be a good idea to include the contact's name and maybe a link to their faculty/staff bio.
- --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:40, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for August 2
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cosplay, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Vulcan. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

RFC at image policy
[edit]Hi there! I was made aware of the RfC you opened at WT:IUP by the feedback request service. After reading over the current discussion, I have a suggestion for you.
Individually rebutting every editor who doesn't agree with your proposal is a dangerous habit to get into. It is very easily percieved as trying to bludgeon the process, and actually detracts from the weight of your position. An RfC is not about you trying to change everyone's mind, it's about allowing the members of the community to express their own opinions and a consensus is determined by the closer of the RfC.
At any rate, I don't think you've done anything wrong per se, but please keep this in mind as you are tempted to respond individually to each oppose !vote. –Darkwind (talk) 03:26, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Darkwind. I don't think that responding to two comments from other users is excessive, especially when one of them explicitly included a question. --Pine✉ 18:27, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
[edit]The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

- Hi Tito Dutta. The plan is for Wikimedia affiliate organizations around the world in countries where English is commonly spoken (like Wikimedia UK, Wikimedia Australia, Wikimedia New York, and Wikimedia India) to do a coordinated press release on the day that English Wikipedia reaches 5 million articles. Right now, the ways that you could be most helpful are to get Wikimedia India engaged in the writing of the press release, and if you're interested you could propose a site banner for use on English Wikipedia that will announce the 5 million article milestone and invite users to click on it for more information. --Pine✉ 20:44, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

Catherine Munros' poem
[edit]How do I get Catherine Munros' poem on my userpage? --I dream of horses (talk to me) (contributions) @ 05:30, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- @I dream of horses: Do you mean the entire text box, or just the text? You can copy either to your talk page, with appropriate attribution. If you want me to put a copy of the box on your user page, just let me know where you want it and I'll try to copy it there for you. --Pine✉ 14:22, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- I want the entire text box.
- I can't seem to copy and paste anything from your userpage. I can see your userpage fine, but there's a "create this page" tab instead of "edit this page". You'll have to copy it yourself. Thanks. --I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{Ping|I dream of horses}} to your message. (talk to me) (contributions) @ 05:03, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- @I dream of horses: my userpage is transcluded from Meta. Try copying from User:CatherineMunro's page. --Pine✉ 18:25, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- Done For a lack of a better place, it's at the bottom of my page. I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{Ping|I dream of horses}} to your message. (talk to me) (contributions) @ 20:54, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is now an experimental Wikimedia maps service. You can give feedback here. [72][73]
- Last week a few issues with UploadWizard were fixed. Before this was done, UploadWizard would stop you from uploading your files if something went wrong. [74][75][76][77]
- More Wikipedias can now use information from any Wikidata item in any Wikipedia article. Previously they could only use the Wikidata item that matched the subject of the article. [78]

- You can now choose whether to extend a link or not when editing one in VisualEditor. This means it is easier to choose how much of what you type before and after the link is part of it. [85]
- Wikibooks can now use data from Wikidata. [86]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on 22 September at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join a meeting with the Wikidata team. It will be on September 23 at 17:00 (UTC). See how to join.
