FiverFan65 is going to get a new kitten!
[edit]Dear Pine, You were my very first friend and tutor on WP - and you Sent Me a Kitten!, so now that I think I'm going to choose to take home a new, real, furry kitten (possibly two, if they are litter-mates), I want to ask you what name YOU would give it (or them), if the naming choice were up to you.
I live right next to an enormous PetCo, where they have kittens looking for homes every day. This week, they have several - and those kitties get adopted really fast! So:
- two black kittens
- two orange kittens
- a black-and-white with a, um, guess you'd call it a "Groucho moustache"
- a calico, who was frantic one hour and possibly sedated an hour later; or maybe that's just being a kitten
My preference would be black kitten(s). And since you're clever, I'll take your suggestions seriously! Hugs, FiverFan65 (talk) 09:01, 2 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65 (Oh, and since I'm a newbie, I don't know whether I should look for your response on my own Talk page or yours. I'll learn. I'm learning as fast as I can!)
- Dear Pine, I've realized that probably anyone can figure out who FiverFan is. Please advise me: Should I choose a new name? Or are there so few interested people that I shouldn't worry about it? Thanks, as always, for your advice. FiverFan65 (talk) 09:27, 2 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
- Hi there.
- Will the kitten be male or female?
- Regarding where to post, when you want to ask a specific person then it's often better to ask on the other person's talk page. If you want to ask everyone then you can ask on your own talk page or on the talk page of an article or WikiProject if the question is about the article or the project.
- Regarding anonymity, you are allowed to choose a new name if you want to be anonymous. Some people want to be anonymous and some people don't care one way or another. However, once you've started posting, it's sometimes possible for a determined investigator to deduce that two accounts are owned by the same person.
- Pine✉ 19:49, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi again! I'm thinking of maybe a male and a female, both entirely black. A passerby at the PetCo said, "If I took that one, I'd name her Salem," which is clever - and I'm a horror film fan - but since I've always allowed my cats out for a few hours in the afternoon, I'm not sure I'd want to go calling "Salem!" in the neighborhood if one were late coming home, you know? Though it's better than, loike, "Grimalkin."
- Second point understood; and, thirdly, yes, I suppose I don't care about anonymity. I have no scandals for anyone to pursue me for.
- I think one black kitten has already been adopted, but they have new kittens all the time, and I'd prefer to get litter-mates. - Hey, make suggestions only if you're interested! Naming pets can be both fun and difficult. I didn't mean to sound like, "You're cool, so now do more for me!" I like black cats best, and gray cats next, and then silver tabbies, and will assuredly not choose TWO of any other color. So we're off the hook for probably a week, until new kittens arrive.
- You're so cool; and you don't have to do more for me unless it's fun for you.
- Thanks again! FiverFan65 (talk) 07:49, 4 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
- Your cats come when you call them? Cats around here come only if I'm offering food!
- (laugh) Home cats like regularity, familiarity, and scheduled meals. I've always allowed my cats out into the back yard (and, yes, they're free to jump over the fence, which is a normal red-picket fence) and wander, chase lizards, say hello to the neighbors (who are friendly to cats). But my cats have always known that they're allowed out until around 5:00 pm, which is when everyone starts driving home from work, and the street fills up with Scary Cars. At this point, my cats have always said, "Gee, that reminds me, time to go home and get dinner." It's only partly training; it's going along with what cats would like anyway: a few hours outside to run around, and then come home to eat and sit in laps.
- Regarding names for two black cats, how about looking at this webpage? http://www.catnamesmeow.com/black-cat-names.htm If you want to pick a few from those I'll tell you my favorites of the ones you've chosen.
Oh, wow, you've done research for me! Let me go look right now!
- Bagheera - of course, that should be obvious! As soon as a kitten grows... Well, one might even have a Bagheera kitten, of course.
- Besides Bagheera, I see lots of Indian names. As I know only about a handful of Indian phrases, but think them beautiful, I would certainly accept any of your suggestions.
- Basalt? not always black, but I wouldn't be embarrassed calling that name in the neighborhood
- Blackula Prince of Darkness - I'd use that name at Halloween, probably. (I REALLY get into celebrating Halloween - I wear outfits for all kinds of super-girls).
(Nothing with "bob" - not EVER. For fear of someone wanting to dump kitty's face into a bucket of water, loike.)
Lots of names for black-and white cats, I see...
- Cinderpelt - Interesting because I've never run into it. But I'd sooner choose, like, "Alec Baldwin," I think.
Cosmic Creeper - That's simply funny. But how do you break it down into a nickname?
Hmmm... More interesting names - Did I tell you I'm a cartoon-phobe? That rules a lot of names out immediately. Sorry. I know people think I'm a party-pooper, but I really do have a phobia about cartoons.
- Fargo - interesting, I wouldn't mind calling that name. But why... Black comedy movie?
- India Ink - that's both old and gorgeous.
-- Wait, I'm being called for possum duty! (Have I told you about opossum duty?) - Okay, you tell me what names you like, as I probably won't get back to you for another day.
Please, longing to know!
Pine, thanks so much! - gotta run! FiverFan65 (talk) 10:08, 6 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
- Okay, quickly: PetCo have already given away their black kittens. They'll have more of all colors next week.
- I did partial possum duty - I went and put out food, and the possum didn't come closer, but didn't run away. Now that I'm back in my office, she's probably eating. - Again, tell me some names that you like, now that you have an idea of what I like. Please.
FiverFan65 (talk) 10:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
- I like Bagheera and Basalt. Your comment about cartoons gave me another idea. What about Carbon? I like Carbon too. Pine✉ 19:42, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- Carbon is not only awesome, it's funny! WE HAVE A WINNER! FiverFan65 (talk) 11:16, 8 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
... cat news. (deleted)
Pine, another thing? I've just contributed a New Article! It's about Robert J. Sawyer's collection, "Relativity." I know that I have to wait weeks. I guess there's no question, really; I'm just anxious, and wanted to put my anxiety out there.
This has been All About Me. Please, Pine, how are YOU? ...
Hugs, but more soon, I hope, FiverFan65 (talk) 11:51, 8 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
- I'm great, thanks. I helped with last week's Signpost Featured content report. That NASA video is one that I nominated for Featured Picture. If you have a moment, watch that video full screen in a dark room. It's awesome.
- If you want to chat more I suggest that we take this conversation to email so that we can talk without the whole world overhearing us.
- Have a nice weekend! Pine✉ 20:31, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi again, and sorry about my rambling. I'd had about 2 hours sleep in 2 days and was space-y and yakking. I watched the video partway, and then it froze; but I'd been watching in real time on that wonderful night. I probably need to download some Java or something; I'm not clever about these things. But I want to say, Hey! That was great that you contributed to that wonderful event! Thanks so much for telling me; I'll share it with friends. More soon! FiverFan65 (talk) 09:10, 12 September 2012 (UTC) FiverFan65
Great work! - Dank (push to talk) 23:51, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note! Pine✉ 00:43, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- I made some tweaks; feel free to revert. - Dank (push to talk) 03:16, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- That looks good except I think the use of the word "dominated" there may be an American colloquialism. Pine✉ 04:26, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- "dominant" actually. "Overpowering" would usually refer to his strength, which is different. Oxford Dictionaries says "having power and influence over others"; Cambridge Dictionaries says "more important, strong or noticeable than anything else of the same type". Both of these are more or less what Americans mean when referring to a "dominant" player ... but of course, sports lingo tends to be jargony; does the phrase sound wrong in BritEng? - Dank (push to talk) 12:14, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- It sounds strange to me as someone who's familiar with the use of the word in genetics and rarely listens to sports chatter, but I did a web search and found that the BBC has used this term the same way in sports, so I guess you're right. Pine✉ 19:47, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Six
[edit]Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!
- Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
- Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
- Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
- New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
- Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.
As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Short (finance) request
[edit]Hi there, Pine. I appreciated your input on the financial articles I worked on for MFA in late spring, and I'm working with them again to improve and clarify some other articles on financial subjects. If you have a moment, would you be willing to read a proposal I've made on the Short (finance) discussion page, and offer your thoughts? Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 19:35, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
