This is to let you know that I've begun a thread on Jimbo's talk page which takes as an example the content of an interaction in which we were involved. As I've written in aprominent disclaimer. there's No intention to canvas here about infoboxes, involved individuals, or anything else. Rather, to use this concrete example to raise an issue which goes beyond individual personalities or any particular dispute.

Infobox military person
Hi, Back in March you asked for the honourific prefix and suffix parameters to be added to the infobox. Did you believe that there was a consensus for this? The reason I ask is because I recently started a discussion in order to see what was the preferred format, only to find that no-one appeared to want prefixes and suffixes. Hi Andy, thanks for your comments at WP:TFAR about Amazing Grace. I believe the infobox dates are fixed, but I'm not sure what the issue with the dissemination section was that you mentioned there. Could you clarify? Mark Arsten (talk) 18:25, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

- I think the 1779 date is when it was self-published (see the bottom of the Olney Hymns section) and the 1780 date refers to it being republished in other British hymnals. Mark Arsten (talk) 18:38, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Daniel Joseph Nadler
Hi Andy, thanks for your feedback. I am a bit confused because when I was working with Txcrossbow to improve the piece (the editor that reviewed it the first time) she did not think the notability was in question and simply wanted me to expand the sleep and dream context so that readers might better understand the research. Though he is an academic at Harvard, I dont think he falls into the standard academic guidelines, since he is far more known for pioneering sleep and dream technology, which was the basis of him being CNN's weekly technology pioneer profile on CNN's What's Next. Please let me know the best way to proceed, thank you! (Tarpoon88 (talk) 11:51, 19 August 2012 (UTC))
- If he's "far more known", that should be easy to demonstrate. These things are never black & white, so please feel free to ask for another opinion. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:26, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- I gave just such an opinion, and accepted it. He fully meets WP:BIO. If there is a reasonable chance the article would pass AfD , it should be accepted. It does need additional work, and I will advise the author. DGG ( talk ) 23:46, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

You declined this article for not having inline citations. WP articles are not required to have inline citations, except in special circumstances, such as potentially negative BLP. Please see WP:CITE for the actual rules. It is true it needed additional sources at the time you declined it to support some of the information given, but please explain things properly to new users. DGG ( talk ) 20:59, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- No, I declined it for being completely unreferenced. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:06, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- It was not adequately referenced, and that is what you should have given as the reason. But that is not the reason you gave, You said it did not have inline citations . That tells the user that inline citations are required, which is just plain false. DGG ( talk ) 23:55, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
AfC on Peter Hamilton
I declined your speedy request. I see no BLP violations necessitating deletion. We only require inline citations for potentially defamatory or controversial or challenged content, even in BLPs. I see none such. The personal comments are neutral. If you were referring to the ones about his family, they are also irrelevant to notability and could probably best be removed, and I will so advise the author. If you are referring to his early career abroad, they seem adequately cited. There remains a problem with some puffery about his career, and I am not yet going to accept the article because of it--it is too promotional in tone. But that's not a BLP violation. Nisbets Article
Hi Andy.
You recently reviewed the article I wrote about the company Nisbets plc. This was my first article so I might need some help with what changes need to be made. Was not the Times article I citated not sufficient support for the claim of the company being the first national mail order catering supplier in the UK? If I can't jusitifiably state that, could I change it to "one of the first national mail order catering suppliers in the UK"?
I'm a mathematician and this is my first encounter with citation, so any advice and direction would be greatly appreciated.
Is the only issue with the article this dubious claim?
Thanks, Anthony
AnthonyDHigginson (talk) 07:20, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- The Times article has a direct quote of the company founder making that claim. I think such a bold statement needs something more substantial, or the claim could be removed. We also need more than one such article (a good place to start reading about this is WP:42). But the article is basically sound, and worth persevering with. Thank you for your contribution. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:25, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
I've added a new reference and changed the original statement to a more general one. If I published it now would it be accepted? I can't find many more potential references.

Submission declined?
Hi Pigsonthewing,
Sorry if this is the wrong venue for this discussion -- I'm still a relatively unexperienced editor here. I just submitted my first-ever-wikipedia article on a family of probability distributions (the "Rayleigh mixture distribution" -- see page here). It is perhaps not the most thrilling, in-depth article ever, but I think does meet the requirements for completeness and is properly cited. I created it because it is a red-linked topic on the List of probability distributions article (not my creation), and appropriately so, in my mind.
The article seems to have been rejected because it was mistaken for being a duplicate of the article on Rayleigh scattering. Although the Rayleigh in question is the same individual, and although his work on probability distributions was related to his physics research, the subjects are certainly quite different and even belong to different disciplines. If anything, the Rayleigh mixture distribution could possibly be argued to belong in the article on the (standard) Rayleigh distribution, but really this is a generalization of that subject, and belongs to a different statistical sub-field -- that of mixture models and mixture distributions.
I hope you might take another glance at this article, or perhaps suggest what I need to do to properly create it. I will also put a duplicate copy of this discussion on the Rayleigh mixture distribution talk page (I'm guessing that is a better place for discussion, but I figured I should contact you about it directly).
Thanks very much, and sorry again if this is not the appropriate avenue to follow. Dgianotti (talk) 18:49, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry about that; I've published your article, with a "not to be confused with header. - No problem. Thanks for the speedy response and resolution! I'll add a link to the Rayleigh page. Dgianotti (talk) 19:06, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Jimmy Robinson
Hi,
The Jimmy Robinson article was my first for Wikipedia. I was thrilled to have been able to contribute to this online encyclopedia. I'm not sure how the 'talk' portion works (am still learning) but in the comments of the Talk section, there's a Lexo person who seems to be confused. I'm not sure his second question makes sense. Can that be removed?
His first question, I thought was legit so I just added in a citation to back up what I stated... I can find many more for Machine Gun, but I'm not sure how many citations would be acceptable for 1 song.
I also wanted to add a link the original video "machine Gun" not sure how I would do that, or again, if it's acceptable but there's the YouTube Link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuVgsD8Wdq8&feature=share&fb_source=message Thank you for your patients with me. --GingerPatrick (talk) 01:04, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Blue Insurance Article Rejection
Hi there Andy, I was disappointed to see that my submission on Blue Insurance was rejected for failing to meet WP's notability criteria. I have re-read this criteria as follows: "An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability. All content must be verifiable. If no independent, third-party, reliable sources can be found on a topic, then Wikipedia should not have an article on it."
I feel based on the references that I had previously provided that Blue Insurance comfortably met this criteria as I referenced several independent travel based websites, Ireland's leading business newspaper (Business Post) as well as a website set up by one of the world's largest accountancy practices, Ernst and Young, to promote their entrepreneur of the year competition. To further bolster Blue Insurances case for achieving notability, I have now added a further reference to this company in Ireland's most read online newspaper, the Irish Independent. Based on these references and that 123.ie has been accepted with only a single reference to just one newspaper which doesn't have the readership that Independent.ie has, I would respectfully request that you reconsider Blue Insurance for inclusion in Wikipedia. Declined article: "Plastics Hall of Fame"
Hi Andy, I just noticed that my a.m. article was declined. This is to my surprise because in more than approx. 50 (or so) articles in en:WP alone (some more in other languages' WPs) refer to it, and users trying to find more info in WP do not succeed sofar. Google Scholar produces more that 50 results of reference and/or citations which should be evidence enough for the idea that it is highly desirable to have a WP article concerning the "Plastics Hall of Fame". Also would it provide reliable information for an important institution which has roughgly 250 inductees, both contemporary (living) and historical (late), both of US-American and international citizenship worldwide. I think, en:WP is the appropriate WP to incorporate the article. I have found another book-reference which I will add to the article whose further improvement I sincerely hope for. Best wishes and lexicographers' regards, Castelargus (talk) 16:50, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
- The number of references found by Google Scholar is immaterial, if they're not cited in the article. Since I said that the article "needs independent, reliable sources to verify its notability. Please add some", you have added only one reference, "Hall of Fame Museums. A Reference Guide". Additional references are still needed. Orbitrap article
Dear Pigsonthewing,
I have submitted an article on Orbitrap few weeks ago and you have rejected on the grounds that I should edit the existing page instead. However, I find it unreasonable for the following reasons: 1) my text was already incorporating the existing page almost completely (inc. Fig. 1) 2) this is my first Wikipedia article and I did not want to invade into the main Wikipedia space without a reviewer checking content and language first. Therefore I would like to ask you to check the article for content and advise me whether I should change anything (especially because I am not an independent "third-party" for this article). If I should update the existing article then, then I will learn how to do this and make an update- but I would like to have your "go-ahead" first!
With best regards,

Bond (film character)
Can you remove the template. You've based it on an incorrect assumption: James Bond in film is not about the character, but about the film series. Following the change of title of the article James Bond (character) to James Bond (literary character), there is no article which looks at the film character, which is the rather large gap this article will expand to fill. - SchroCat (^ • @) 13:25, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Evolution (JLS album)
Hello Pigsonthewing. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Evolution (JLS album), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: A9 only applies to musical recordings where the artist does not have an article. JLS has an article. Thank you. GB fan 18:52, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't know what you're trying to insinuate here [1][2], but it is uncivil and unsupportable. Neotarf (talk) 12:31, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

- I didn't call you names, here or previously, and I didn't say you are silly; I said you were being silly, which, as an adverbial description of your actions, and in the circumstances of your previous posts, is permissible under all the policies you cite. - I don't seem to be able to find the policy section that states it's okay to be uncivil as long as you use adverbs. Perhaps you will provide the links and diffs for that at the same time you provide the links and diffs for whatever it is that you find objectionable about me. On the other hand, now that you know I have taken offense, perhaps you would clarify your intentions or reword your original statement to be more civil. Let me also remind you that the MoS pages are subject to Arbitration Committee discretionary sanctions. See this remedy which includes the reminder " All parties are reminded to avoid personalizing disputes concerning the Manual of Style, the article titles policy ('WP:TITLE'), and similar policy and guideline pages, and to work collegially towards a workable consensus." Page Curation update
Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:23, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
speedy tag
Thank you for your explanation. I contested the deletion but I don't know if it is too late as it has already been deleted by dgg so I clicked on the contest the deletion link and left a message as well as left a message on the talk page of dgg. I will also leave a message here. This page should not be speedily deleted because... (the exception to A7 is educational institutions which it is; also other language schools are listed in wikipedia such as Mackdonald Language Academy which has no content at all other than "Mackdonald Language Academy is a language school in Kilkenny, Ireland." I can provide other examples as well. Moreover, unlike some language school it is not an orphan such as EasyMandarin or such as Empik, Emanci Language Institute, Keary Portuguese School, etc. Hong Kong Institute of Languages has a box saying it is an orphan and this article appears to be written like an advertisement. Please help to improve it by rewriting promotional content from a neutral point of view, so I would also like to be able to list the school and if there is some problem fix the content so that it is a neutral point of view. Of course I am intending to improve the article with references etc but I would need some time to do that so I would like to keep the page and have time to improve it like the other language school listed above and many others have been given time to improve their pages. Thanks. Would it be ok to add the page if I add notable professors who are there such as ones who have written several books? My apologies for continuing to add comments here but I am new to wikipedia so I am trying to find out about how to read good articles and now I read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:SoWhy/Common_A7_mistakes It says common indication of importance or significance - organization - have multiple notable members - notable being has published something in a notable journal so it meets that criteria and from the first time I created the page, I linked from the notable member to the school but I didn't link from the school to the notable member. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeonjubibimbap (talk • contribs) 20:39, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Pigsonthewing, i tried to contest the deletion but it was automatically deleted. Sorokin is one of the top designers of 2012, I sited references like InStyle, L'Officiel, and Depesha. Viktor Lazic
Hello, Thank you for writing to me. I wanted to add Viktor Lazic on wikipedia because he is the most famous and only travel writer in Serbia. People in Serbia dont travel and they dont have any travel writers (they had one in 80s but it was not so famous). That is why I decided to put him on wikipedia so people will get to know more about him. Do you think my article will be deleted? Hi Andy, I was just wondering if you had an opportunity to review my article on Blue Insurance as I have added further citations and I really do now believe that the article certainly meets Wikipedia's notability criteria. Canji River updating
Andy,
I have been looking at the Canje River article to improve coordinate information for the river and for the photo of the river, and then at the template:Infobox river, where I find your comments on the talk page. Then I looked at Delaware River, and I see the Geobox|River template with plenty of lat/long parameters for various parts of the river. Same for Amazon River. The Amazon River is given as an example in the Geobox|River documentation, but the example doesn't have as many parameters as the mainspace article. (I suppose I could correct that with a copy and paste.) So, should I switch the Canju River to the Geobox|River template?
Then I have the problem of showing the location of the Canji River photo, taken from the bridge in New Amsterdam. I have inserted digital lat/long into the description, but I don't know how to show that properly.
Even experienced editors may find this kind of situation a challenge, but I am hoping that your experience in such matters is much superior to mine. --DThomsen8 (talk) 16:07, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Shah family template
Hi Andy, I see that you removed the currently empty seventh generation from the Template:Shah family. The reason I added it is that I had a devil of a job sorting out entries that were made by other users and IPs, some of which probably belonged not in generation 6 where they placed them, but in generation 7. In the end, I removed a lot of entries and spent several hours piecing together the remaining entries. And a lot of these people didn't know how to add to the template. Just a thought.
