Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Problems
- There are some new tools to make it easier for newcomers to start editing. They are available on some wikis. These wikis had a problem with the visual editor for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug in the new tools. It was soon fixed. [1]
- Some user scripts and gadgets stopped working because of a change to CSS selectors.
.vectorTabs
should be replaced with.vector-menu-tabs
to fix this. [2]
Changes later this week
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. This will be released on 24 June. You can give feedback. [3]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 June. It will be on all wikis from 25 June (calendar).
Future changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. It will not work after 13 July. Wikis should use TemplateStyles instead. 91 wikis still need to fix this. You can read more and see if your wiki is affected. [4]

Problems
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a few users saw the wikis as if they were logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [5]
- Some readers didn't see new edits to pages. If the page had been recently changed they saw an older version of the page instead. This only affected readers who were logged out. It lasted for ten days. It has been fixed. [6]

It is sourced in the biography, that should be ovbious. They were "Plover" birds. As for the name of such birds see the sourced article Kentish plover. Universally they were regarded the as the same species until 2011 - this incident occurred in 1975 and the biography was published in 2002. Dapi89 (talk) 17:08, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not clear why you're posting here, rather than on the article's talk page. I'm also unclear why you described my original removal of a claim that a plane in England hit a flock of a species of bird that "breeds in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, the southern and western United States and the Caribbean" as "incorrect"."sourced in the biography, that should be ovbious [sic]" doesn't meet our standards. Restoring such unsourced material with an edit summary of "nope" is not acceptable. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:40, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- Wow
- It doesn't make any difference where I post.
- its sourced, which you were already told, so "nope" is entirely acceptable.
- the plover is not native to South America only. The Kentish and Snowy types were considered one and the same until 2011.
- And since the incident occurred in 1975, and the source published in 2002 they are described as one and the same in the source. Dapi89 (talk) 17:49, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- Again: soured in your head doesn't meet our standards; an inline source in the article is required, for a challenged statement. The link I initially removed referred to a species which, on the linked page, is explicitly described as above. Don't post here again. Use the article talk page, or not. Up to you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:11, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- Wow
Deleting a re-direct
My article Jo_King_(triathlete) is still showing an active re-direct even after I tried to delete the re-direct in my sandbox. Also, although the title of the article looks ok - it's not searchable when I search "jo king (triathlete) in the search box.

Future changes
- Abstract Wikipedia is a new Wikimedia project. It will collect language-independent information that can be easily read in different languages. It builds on Wikidata. The name is preliminary. You can read more. [8]
- The iOS Wikipedia app developers are thinking about new experimental tools. If you use an iPhone you can help them by answering the survey.
- Some rules for user signatures will soon be enforced. Lint errors and invalid HTML will no longer be allowed in user signatures. Nested substitution will not be allowed. A link to your user page, user talk page or user contributions will be required. You can check if your signature works with the new rules. This is because the signatures can cause problems for tools or other text on the page.

Motherfoclóir
Regarding your part-reversion of my edits to Darach Ó Séaghdha: the title of the book Motherfoclóir is a bilingual play on words — foclóir is Irish for 'dictionary', but the combined word sounds like motherfucker. It's not a single dictionary word, so how it should be tagged is something of an edge case. At least for the sake of screenreaders, I would suggest the tagging of the second half of the title as being Irish is the best way to handle that, surely? — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 17:56, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- I'm aware of the etymology. As I said in my edit summary, I'm not convinced that a word can change language at its mid-point. Likewise, I'm not convinced that screenreaders would recognise such a change. I suggest opening a discussion on the template's talk page, perhaps with a pointer to it on the talk page of the accessibility project. I do not seem to get the "one-reference-cited-twice" thing working.
