Administrators' newsletter – May 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

Invitation to join the Fifteen Year Society

Dear Pigsonthewing/Archive 121,

I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Fifteen Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikipedia project for fifteen years or more.

Best regards, Urhixidur (talk) 16:28, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi there, as you created this template, I thought I should let you know that the SongFacts URLs are no longer in the http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1697 format, now they look like this: https://www.songfacts.com/facts/pink-floyd/comfortably-numb and there doesn't appear to be any way to derive the ID number from the page, if you don't know it in advance. Robman94 (talk) 22:32, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, It seems that the old links still work, so at least the template is not broken. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:41, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
Correct, if you click on the 1697 link above (as generated by the template) it takes you to the new style link page, but if you go to SongFacts and search for a song, I can't see anyway to tell what its id number is. I just discovered your template yesterday after adding SF links to a few song articles and was about to replace them with the template, which is how I found that I can't use it. Would it be possible to modify the template so it can handle both formats? Or, if that's too difficult, how about a new template for the new format? (Btw, I'm a big Floyd fan too). Robman94 (talk) 13:25, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
I had added SongFacts articles as references in a couple of articles but somebody came along and deleted them, as it turns out that SongFacts is not an approved WP:RS, so I'm not sure that a linking template is needed. Robman94 (talk) 17:24, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Paul Braddon, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Addington (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:25, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Pigsonthewing,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.
