Millennium ancient salt fields
Hi Phil. I want to add this to Hainan#Historical_sites and Yangpu Peninsula. Any suggestions on the correct English name, and for that matter, the correct Chinese name? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:55, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Anna, yes I wrote about this under the title "Yangpu's Ancient Saltpan". In Chinese it's generally called 洋浦千年古盐田 - literally "Yangpu one thousand year ancient salt field". From my research, "saltpan" is probably the best English translation of 盐田 since there is no such word as "salt field" in English. As for dropping the "one thousand years" from the translation, well you know how the Chinese like to be verbose - "Ancient' is enough I think. Beware though, that link looks like a machine translation to me (i.e. crap) Best, Philg88 (talk) 07:56, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I actually stubbed it: Yangpu Ancient Salt Field. It turns out there's quite a bit of coverage on it. I didn't know it was so famous. Have you visited it? I'm looking for an image now. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:45, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I've been there - there is a two page article on it in a certain book :). I can let you have an image no problem. Philg88 (talk) 10:51, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- That would be wonderful. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:24, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I whacked it pretty hard. It could use some Chinese, plus Port of Basuo sounds just plain wrong. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:48, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, clunky indeed. I've stubbed Basuo and changed the link in the Hainan article. Best Philg88 (talk) 23:20, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Ports
Hi there. I am preparing 2 port articles. Do you know if Xiuying Port and Haikou New Port the same thing? The Chinese sites are confusing the heck out of me. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:19, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- The ports in question are Xiuying (秀英港) which is at the end of Haigang Road (海港路) off Binhai Avenue and Xingang (新港), literally "new port" which is east of Century Bridge and they are not the same. Have a look at this which confirms these two plus Macun (马村港) or there is a map here Philg88 (talk) 07:41, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the help. I'm much obliged. I stubbed them and will expand them. If you have pics, please add them. Haikou New Port, Haikou Xiuying Port, Macun Port Cheers!! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:14, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
Sorry to bug you again. this article shows some pretty wild figures at the bottom. Can they be true? Also, it says Haikou New Port is located on the southern side of the mouth of the Nandu River 7 km west of Haikou Xiuying Port. Does that sound right? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:04, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
(Specifically: "...cargo throughput 195.8 million tonnes, imports of passenger volume of 365 million motor vehicles through the amount of 18.7 million vehicles. To the 1996 annual cargo throughput reached 410 million tons, import and export of passenger 327 million cars by the amount of 30.5 million vehicles...."
You'd be able to see that from space.) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:09, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
And finally, are you happy with the names? (I will make the appropriate redirects after upon your approval.) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:15, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
- No problem, that's incorrect - if it were true then Xingang would be somewhere along Holiday Beach which wouldn't sit well with the tourists I suspect.
- As for these cargo figures, these look to date to the import scam when Hainan imported vast amounts of cars and other stuff which was then flogged on the mainland at reduced duty.
- Names are fine - the reason I didn't call the Basuo article Basuo Port is that the place is more than that - in the case of these three they are specifically ports. Best Philg88 (talk) 03:28, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
- I'll disregard all but the history from that gov site.
- Basuo: makes sense.
- Thanks for the ext links. I'll grab data from them for the articles. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:34, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Haikou population source
Can you dig up a source for 1.8 million? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:19, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Here you go - Haikou population. It says 183.3 万 which would be 1,833,300. Best Philg88 (talk) 08:08, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:35, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

- Happy to help. The first issue, after a quick bit of research here is that there are two caterpillar clubs as the article currently states but doesn't present the topic logically. Should they be included in a single article or split into seperate articles with the current article a disambiguation page? Philg88 (talk) 20:44, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
If I were proficient in the subject, I would have the grounding to make such decisions. As it is, my sole role is prodding those who are more informed to improve the article, before I resort to recommending deletion.

Chinese wiki sites
Would you happen to have a short list such sites? Just a handful of the biggies so I can blacklist when referencing. Many thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:08, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- You don't have to type .com or www. etc., just a keyword for me to watch out for. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:24, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Actually I don't have such a list as I will normally Google or Baidu for a Chinese keyword and not pay too much attention to the name of the Chinese site. That said, the most well known sites are Baidu, Sohu, Hudong, Sosu and Tianya plus about a billion others. Best Philg88 (talk) 20:50, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- That's perfect. I'll keep the list on my computer for quick reference. Thank you very much. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:22, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Page move
I'm think of moving Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya --> Guanyin of the South Sea of Sanya.
Please advise. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:11, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Good idea, but wouldn't "Guanyin of the South Sea, Sanya" be better? Too many "of"s otherwise. Best Philg88 (talk) 22:36, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Whatever is the best translation, not the best sounding. That's your call. If you like, let me know here, and I will propose it at the article talk, or you can. Then, we can give it a couple of weeks to see if anyone cares, (they won't is my guess), and change it. What sayeth thee? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:24, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Well, it’s Chinese name seems to be 南山海上观音圣像 according to the official website that in English they translate as Sea-based Kwanyin Statue which is dreadful. A more accurate translation and better name for the article might well be Guanyin Maritime Statue, Sanya.
- While we’re on the subject, Nanshan Temple should also be moved to Nanshan Buddhist Culture Garden as this is a more direct translation of its Chinese name (南山佛文化苑). Philg88 (talk) 23:43, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Well, it seems that the common name of the thing in English supersedes the direct translation. I am now digging for the policy page, and for external references to the statue, to see what it is most commonly called. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:45, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- I can't find any consistency in the common English name. You pick the name. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:39, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- My suggestion is Guanyin Maritime Statue, Sanya which would cover all the keywords a user might search for. Best Philg88 (talk) 00:43, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'm leaning toward Guanyin Maritime Statue of Sanya to avoid the comma. What do you think? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:45, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm... "of" makes it sound very Chinese. What's wrong with the comma? Philg88 (talk) 01:45, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- Just a personal preference. Does it sound very Chinese? Great Wall of....oh yeah. Ok, the comma's fine by me. Mostly, I care about the Guanyin not being Guan Yin. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:12, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- My point being only that you wouldn't say "The White House of Washington" or the "Statue of Liberty of New York" :) Philg88 (talk) 06:39, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- True. Well if the Chinese name contains "Sanya", then I guess that's the best choice. I'm happy with the comma. If we're settled on it, let me know, and I will post at the talk page. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:18, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- Fine by me Philg88 (talk) 21:01, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Article names
Hello. I'm back to bother you. Could you please advise on the names for Qianshou Qianyan Guanyin of Weishan and Guanyin of Mount Xiqiao? I just took the names from list of statues, verbatim and I haven't made any redirects yet. Many thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:56, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
- No bother. Qianshou Qianyan Guanyin of Weishan in Chinese is 沩山千手千眼观音圣像 which translates to Guishan Guanyin of the Thousand Hands & Eyes. This has a nice Buddhist/Chinese ring to it and is my suggestion for the article title.
- The Chinese name for Guanyin of Mount Xiqiao is 西樵山的南海观音 which translates to Guanyin of the South China Sea, Mount Xiqiao. I think that the association with the South China Sea is important in the Chinese name and should somehow be reflected in the English article title. Best Philg88 (talk) 22:37, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
- Okay. I will move the articles. Can I replace "&" with "and"? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:01, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- No problem. Philg88 (talk) 01:20, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Okay. I will move the articles. Can I replace "&" with "and"? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:01, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Done. And definitely not Guishan Guanyin of a Thousand Hands & Eyes? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:40, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- I think it doesn't make a lot of difference . Philg88 (talk) 01:55, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Done. And definitely not Guishan Guanyin of a Thousand Hands & Eyes? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:40, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- One sounds Chinese and one sounds poetic. Your call. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:03, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
3 more need proper English names
Many thanks! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:15, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- Literal translations:
- Jiangzhou Dongxuexitong = 江洲洞穴系统 = Jiangzhou Cave System. The pinyin is wrong anyhow – should be Jiangzhou Dongxue Xitong but an English name would be better.
- Shuanghe Dongqun 双河洞 The Chinese does not match the page title. It should have the character 群 (qun) at the end which means group. That gives a literal translation of “Shuang River Cave Group”.
- Teng Long Dong 腾龙洞 Again, whoever created this doesn’t know pinyin. It should be Tenglong Dong which means “Soaring Dragon Cave”. Teng Cave would be a better article title I think. I’ve expanded the article 5X so if you can think of a DYK go ahead.
- Quick moan: I wish when people create articles about China that they wouldn’t just use pinyin for the title – meaningless for non-Chinese speakers. Best Philg88 (talk) 02:37, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- Feel free to move them again. Redirects are cheap.
- Sorry - typo by me should be Tenglong Cave, I've moved it. Philg88 (talk) 08:27, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- 5x true, but 1,500 chrs isn't enough. Teng Cave's hook of "...believed to be the longest monomer karst cave system in the world...", and Shuang River Cave Group's "...is the longest cave in China..." would be good, but I don't see enough material at the moment. Plus, the sources are a little dicey.
- I came across this during my info gathering. Quite something!
- Thanks for the work on the articles. It's much appreciated. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:00, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- You're welcome - further research shows that Teng Cave's claim is disputed - apparently it's never been fully surveyed. Now there's an idea ... :) Philg88 (talk) 07:12, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Just an FYI. If you have an image, that would be great. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:33, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Thinking of stubbing these. Should Chikhen Agui be called Chikhen Cave? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:35, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- My Mongolian is not up to much I'm afraid so I can't confirm. Are you sure you want to stub these? Unless you have more than a one sentence entry saying it's a cave they may get booted for WP:NOT issues. Best Philg88 (talk) 22:29, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- I just figured Agui must means cave. What else? What about the Chinese cave names I posted above "3 more..."?
- I'm not sure sure anyone would object. But, now that you mention it, it might be better to start Caves of Mongolia, and list them there in sections until each is big enough to split off into an article. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:15, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- I like the Caves of Mongolia idea. Philg88 (talk) 00:44, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Agui --> Cave
I changed the redlinks in List of caves Mongolia section because agui definitely means cave, and naming conventions...you know the rest. Do you think this will cause problems for people searching for the articles? Should I put the old name in parentheses beside each name? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:15, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think it's a problem - people searching will be looking for the name itself - agui/cave are secondary. Philg88 (talk) 12:02, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- Fair enough. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:55, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think it's a problem - people searching will be looking for the name itself - agui/cave are secondary. Philg88 (talk) 12:02, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
List of caves in Mongolia
Just letting you know that I started List of caves in Mongolia. I wanted to start List of caves in Inner Mongolia, but there aren't that many caves.
Maybe a better article would be List of vast stretches of nothing in Inner Mongolia or List of people with little containers of tobacco in Inner Mongolia. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:17, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- Good work, I have some more cave articles in preparation - see what you started? As for your suggested article, I would make it a little more precise List of people with little containers of tobacco in Inner Mongolia in possession of a pony called "Nigel". That should cover it. Best Philg88 (talk) 11:22, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
- Of course, we would end up moving the page to: List of people with little containers of tobacco in Inner Mongolia romantically involved with a pony called "Nigel" Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:29, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
