DYK

Thank you for the advice. :) Rong Qiqi is not famous for meeting Confucius per se, he is famous for a fable surrounding him that is a philisophical allegory for a hedonistic, ascetic-like way of life. I apologise, this wasn't made clear in the DYK nomination, but I thought the meeting-Confucius-thing would be a more appealing hook! And as for List of Chinese military texts, could you suggest which parts specifically need to be wikified? Which part of the lead? Any help would be much appreciated, hoping to get that one through DYK as well.--Hongkongresident (talk) 03:38, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the help.--Hongkongresident (talk) 05:54, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Nine Provinces (China)

Dear Philg88, I have added Chinese nomenclature in the [1] because the terms do not have an established content, they started as vague concepts [2] without geographical delineation, and it took a millenia to become the provinces [[3] that are associated with specific historical events. Since the pinyin phonetization differs from other phonetizations in the literature and translations, it is difficult to catch location of the historical events without their Chinese coding. The indication of the Chinese form is not intended to make English–Chinese bilingual edition, but help to bridge the vagueness of the archaic terms with their use in the Classical events. I would suggest that we keep them, per WP:MOS-ZH Thanks, Barefact (talk) 09:43, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Barefact, I actually prefer to have simp/trad Chinese characters in cases like these (but without pinyin) - maybe we need to clarify WP:MOS-ZH? in respect of ancient Chinese history. Feel free to add back to the article as you please. Best, Philg88 (talk) 11:22, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Charlie Soong - Hakka background

Hi PhilG八十八. An IP has recently changed Soong's background to Cantonese which I reverted. It may become a problem as Hugi works towards WP:GA status for the article. (As I'm sure you are aware, ethnic background issues can most unfortunately turn an encyclopaedia into a battleground.) Could it possibly be referenced to save future bother? Oo-roo!--Shirt58 (talk) 10:51, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Shirt58. I've added a reference as requested. I know some members of the Han family here in Hainan who are related to Charlie Soong - they would be most put out to be referred to as Cantonese :). Philg88 (talk) 22:30, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
Phew! I even had drafted an apology for my presumptuousness in (a) addressing you half in 漢字, and (b) poking my nose into an article I knew nothing about. Thanks for your reply, and for the addition of the ref. An Englishman in China, and an Australian who claims to be a monoglot (but appears to be able to translate an article in a language he's never studied) are discussing an article that someone whose native language is Icelandic is trying to make a Good Article. Dontcha just love Wikipedia!--Shirt58 (talk) 10:34, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Wikifying Chinese

Hello. For purposes of avoiding over-linking, I recommend that for all instances of the template except the first, you use the "links=no" parameter of the ZH-template. And much of the time only simplified Chinese is given in parentheses, to reduce clutter from language. Thanks, and happy editing!--HXL's Roundtable, and Record 23:49, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the recommendation, but Wikipedia doesn't work like that unless I misread the style guides. If you care to examine my edit history you will see that I carefully avoid overusing the ZH template. As for suggesting that "to avoid clutter" we should disregard traditional Chinese then you are being disingenuous to our readers from Taiwan and Singapore to say the least. Philg88 (talk) 12:45, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
No, I meant to say that it is preferable not to use the ZH-template in prose when simplified and traditional are different. and Singapore uses simplified. you should know that. A simple (simp/trad) format would be best.
And now that this little discussion is placed, I have withdrawn my fears that those not so familiar with Chinese would misunderstand the simp/trad format and have resolved to adhere to it. So long as the order is maintained throughout the article, we should be fine. --HXL's Roundtable, and Record 15:57, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Actually, Singapore's usage of Chinese characters isn't that straightforward but that's not the point. I agree that the ZH template should not be used in prose - only in leads and other places. Other occurences are best done by putting the Hanzi in brackets. I use simp/trad ordering for no other reason than that there are more users of the former. Of course, all articles containing Hanzi should include the pertinent template. Best, Philg88 (talk) 21:23, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Zhou Chinese

These historical names are referenced. You are in China, it is also easy to find a bronze inscription book to verify it. Also 國 did not mean state in Zhou dynasty.《姓氏•名号•别称》:中国人的避讳Gaia1CB3 (talk) 11:34, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Translate

You translating Chinese terms is good faith. They are usually pinyin. We may already have many English translations without concensus. You are adding new ones.Gaia1CB3 (talk) 13:01, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

RfC: Mongol influences on Western art

Hello Phil! Thank you all for your comments at Talk:Franco-Mongol alliance! Now that the RfC is over, and since concensus seems to be that the sandbox article User:Per Honor et Gloria/Sandbox/Mongol elements in Western medieval art is a worthwhile article, would you mind actually copying the article into the main space: Mongol elements in Western medieval art, and link one or two articles to it? Thank you! Per Honor et Gloria  11:49, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

er... I'm a bit confused, the article has been in the main space since 29th August 2010. Is there anything else you need done? Philg88 (talk) 21:39, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Somebody handled the move a few hours after the request to you. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:46, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, thanks Anna - I get it now. I looked at the history and didn't click that the article had moved from the sandbox. Philg88 (talk) 21:53, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Done Thank you! Per Honor et Gloria  00:36, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Please see this. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:05, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

If you have a better hook, please feel free... Anna Frodesiak (talk)

I've cleaned up the article a bit and made a suggestion re the hook on the DYK page. Philg88 (talk) 21:36, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Well done. Good edits. Good refs. I like the hook suggestion. I will wait until after the weekend and formally add it as ALT1.
Any thoughts on the logo, or the article move as posted on article talk? Happy New Year. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:41, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
I haven't come across a logo on any of the Chinese sites but will keep my eyes peeled. I made a comment about the move on the article talk page. Happy New Year to you too. Philg88 (talk) 22:26, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I saw the comment and replied. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

The article could use a bit more content to make DYK. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:48, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I am thinking about starting the article. Do you know the district it is in? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:04, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

It's in the Meilan District. Check your email there's more :) Best, Philg88 (talk) 21:20, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Photos of Meilan Airport

Do you have a photo of the front? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:05, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

I'm afraid not. I keep meaning to take one but it's hard to figure the best place to shoot it from. Philg88 (talk) 21:22, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Hainan Eastern Ring Railway

Didn't you get one of these? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:09, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Nope. I don't think my name was on the submission. No problem though. Philg88 (talk) 21:17, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I don't know the context so I'm guessing a bit:
南明君主及追尊皇帝 This refers to the revered emperors of the Southern Ming Dynasty. You can see a list on Chinese Wikipedia here or the English version here.
福王政权 refers to the regime of somebody called King Fu (福王), Fu is a common surname and I have no idea who he was.
明朝藩王列表 (熙祖系) This is another list of Ming Emperors - see my first comment above.

Hope this helps, Best Philg88 (talk) 09:03, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
