Hello Pgallert. A reminder about Under-representation of science and women in Africa: Wikimania 2018 an opportunity to bridge the gap. Your contribution is appreciated. Ear-phone (talk) 14:43, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

New DYK nomination?

Hi, Pgallert. Happy New Year! Would you mind nominating Charles Walenn for DYK? The hook could be something like:

Does that make the irony clear enough? He had starred, for over a dozen years, *only* on tour, never at the Savoy, in the Savoy operas, and only later did he ever appear there! Feel free to revise the hook if you think it can be clearer in the allotted number of words. Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:45, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi User:Ssilvers! I'm sorry to have missed this, it would indeed have been an interesting hook. Was on holiday without Internet access, now back as usual. Cheers! Pgallert (talk) 14:50, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Indaba?

Are you planning to go? https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_conference_2018/Questions_%26_Needs --Gereon K. (talk) 09:29, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Gereon! It appears that I have missed the deadline for scholarships. Was on holiday without Internet access. I think I'll skip the Indaba this time, too expensive to travel on my own money. --Pgallert (talk) 09:14, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Wikimania ?

Hallo Peter.

Pgallert (talk) 12:11, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Seriöse Website?

Hallo! Darf ich dich was fragen?

Beste Gruesse, Pgallert (talk) 14:40, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

DYK nom?

Hello, Pgallert! Do you have time to do another DYK nom? It is George Bentham (singer), and the creators are User:Jack1956 and me. A possible hook might be:

...that after a decade-long opera and concert career, George Bentham originated the leading role of Alexis in The Sorcerer (1877), which proved to be his last performing engagement."

How's that? Note that the main source of the article is Kurt Gänzl's blog, but although it is a blog, Gänzl is one of the most important musical theatre writers in the world. See his bio. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:54, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ssilvers, nice to hear from you again! I'll certainly try. Regarding the wording of the hook, and forgive my lack of education, does 'creating/originating the role' mean anything more than being the first to perform it? I think the duplication of the word 'role' is not ideal, and maybe the situation can be expressed differently? Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 15:39, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! I fixed the duplication of the word "role". The role creator or originator is the first person to play the role, usually in the original production. I think the hook is interesting, because (1) Bentham was so disappointed that he abruptly ended his career; (2) The Sorcerer was the first full-length Gilbert and Sullivan opera that is still performed today, 141 years later, so its stars are of interest in musical theatre history, because without Gilbert and Sullivan, musical theatre would not have evolved as it did. Can you suggest any further changes to the hook? -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:50, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi Ssilvers! No doubt it is an interesting hook, I just thought I might have missed something, like if he converted his role from prose to play, or performed any other creative task on it. But wouldn't then simply ", which proved to be his last" be more elegant? --Pgallert (talk) 08:48, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
No, I don't think the clause is clear without a noun. It proved to be his last role, part, or engagement. Feel free to choose either "performing engagement" or "role". One could say "part", but that would not be crystal clear to non-theatregoers, I think. Or, it could be:

...that after a decade-long opera and concert career, George Bentham originated the leading role of Alexis in The Sorcerer (1877); he then stopped performing."

Feel free to pick one, and then please proceed. -- Ssilvers (talk) 09:12, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

I nominated it as listed on top here (Cause I think a semicolon to separate what could be two sentences, is not allowed... rulezzz). See Template:Did you know nominations/George Bentham (singer). Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 17:23, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:16, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Improving Incubator

Hi Peter,

It was a pleasure meeting you in Cape Town!

A little reminder: It would be nice to hear your opinion about my proposal to overhaul Incubator.

As far as I can see, your Phabricator account is now approved, and you can leave a comment there.

If you have any criticism, I'd love to hear it, too.

Thank you! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:45, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

They are called "riviere" and only flow periodically during the rainy season, sometimes just for a few days or even hours."
Gruss! Pgallert (talk) 22:02, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

DYK nom: New article

Hello, Pgallert! Would you mind nominating Carrie Tubb for DYK? It was created by User:Tim riley, an excellent editor. The hook could be:

sign of life

are you the slightest interested in the namibia uranium mines fiasco - I could offer the diffs to show the problems. Or I could leave it. Interestingly I have a german speaking traveler staying at the moment... Up to you re the mining issue. Trust all is well. JarrahTree 10:19, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi JarrahTree, let me admit lack of knowledge on this issue. I have written about mining but I'm not an expert at all. Can you point me to some news or online sources on this? Thanks, Pgallert (talk) 10:24, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
no problems - I will dig it all up in a few minutes...
It all goes back to user bin mai created a vast sea of mining articles in 2013 or so from one source entries - included in them were mines that have never existed (they were mineral deposits that were announced but were never developed)

some recent afd include:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Tubas-Tumas_mine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Zhonghe_mine
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Valencia_mine

It doesnt really bother me whether they end up (like our conversations at wikimanias) - or where they go, just thought there might have been a chance that you might have had knowledge of these... and if they get kept so be it - but it seemed a vast amount of bin mai's edits were from very poor sources and in most cases discovered deposits and not necessarily worked mines. It seemed to make a mockery of the mining project being an accurate mining venture... and not a field of hoaxes so to speak. JarrahTree 10:36, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

I'll look into these. Valencia has got some media coverage, and, iirc, a sign post off the street. The other two will stand and fall with the question "what is a mine?" but should probably not have articles at the moment, unless we want to have coverage of every exploration license granted on this planet. --Pgallert (talk) 11:02, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for looking - appreciate that - as for your last comment - I agree totally JarrahTree 11:06, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi JarrahTree! I checked out the matter a bit. It seems as if the AfD discussions are going nowhere, certainly not towards a consensus to delete. I believe all of those articles, except Valencia mine which indeed exists, should be nominated together, outlining that the creator didn't understand the difference between a deposit and a mine. The only source clearly lists all of the following - not currently at AfD - as deposits and/or place (farm) names:

For each entry have a wrong and unreferenced statement ("is a mine"), followed by a wrong and unsupported claim ("one of the largest uranium reserves"), followed by an Original-Research calculation drawn from a publication of the World Nuclear Association, a partisan group promoting the nuclear industry. As most of the U-mining companies will likely be members, this source is not independent and thus not suitable.

I think with a motivation in this form the whole list can be removed. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 10:08, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Notice

The article Wilhelm Krüger has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

It appears that this is a fake article, because that person never existed : he was confused with Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger at the time of his creation. It has just been deleted from French Wikipedia where it had been copied from English Wikipedia. Please see that discussion page : [1]. Best regards. Gkml

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
