Hi Penny, thanks for taking the time to look at this list User:Jane023/Women in Red, now blue on some Wikipedia! Please don't edit the list. The idea is to show which items need information on Wikidata. All edits to the list will be overwritten by the listeria bot that created the list. Ugh, okay, sorry I misunderstood. Wikidata feels like a minefield to me, I'm always afraid of editing anything there. Maybe someone bolder should do this instead, and I'll stick to en:wiki for now.Penny Richards (talk) 23:39, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

There are two things about the list that are useful: One is an indicator of whether they tend to have lots of other data besides occupation (they don't) and the other is to check for images & birthdates (which some do have). As I said to Rosie, don't try to fix the whole list in one go as it will get you down, but just pick at it from time to time. Try doing one on someone you know and just create an occupation statement on Wikidata. After about an hour, if you click "update manually", then this itam should disappear from the list (they are listed in descending order by Q number, which gives an indication of creation date). In the case of Penelope Reed Doob for example, you said she was a scholar and medievalist, but keep it simple on Wikidata - she's a writer. I did that one so you can check it when you click the Q number here: d:Q33111949. I just scrolled to the bottom of the statement list, clicked "add" then added "occupation" in the left hand property field, and "writer" in the right hand statement field, then clicked "save". Thanks for the patient explanation. I'm sure the list is very useful, but I'm not a data person; I don't get any thrill filling in forms (got plenty of that chore in my life already). So I'll leave Wikidata to the folks who do enjoy that. I had to laugh at "after about an hour"... that's definitely not how my leisure time online happens! I agree, that would be my decision too. Wiki Science Competition 2017

Hi, I don't if you missed all the messages I left here and on commons and wikiveristy about this event.

I am checking with Ivo Kruusamägi from Wikimedia Estonia the composition of the final juries. We did our best to keep it balanced by continent, gender, field etc but in the end we are still working on it.

I hope that the results will promote science around the globe in any case. As a last appropriate effort now that more urgent issues have been addressed and we are finalizing the main organization, I am also looking all the profiles of active wikimedians that are women or from countries without a jury or from other research fields, with a public name and surname (jurors should be public figures) and a academic or scientific or technological education or position.

The key aspect is to make a wikidata item of the jurors, so I need some ID that show they are or were related to the academia. There are good chance for example that this is you. We want to give the idea to the young uploaders that we their images will be evaluated by people who were or are in the academia like them, with different backgrounds.

Would you be interested in joining us to be a juror in the second-level jury? I am sure that next time we will find new additional contacts and I will find your name not at the last minute. The workload is in December.

Also, as I said in the talk page of the next "women in red" event, we expect wikimedians to make good use of the images, and this includes also the portraits of professors, therefore the representation of women in science.

Even you don't have time, could you help us also in promoting the event amongst people you know or mailing lists or groups you have joined? This will be also useful to promote more national juries next time.

Glad to hear that. The main Iranian uploader is a very good photographer, although not a scientist. Unfortunately the Indian pictures are less nice, there is much more crap there (even if sometimes more scientific)... in any case as soon as the majority of the Iranian jurors have completed their tasks, we can start India. I simply cannot ask too many things at the same time to the same people. Hi Penny, I just noticed this edit, where you add a reference that goes through your local proxy (the .gate.lib.buffalo.edu thing). I followed the link, and I don't get the information as I do not have access to the buffalo library (hence, rendering the link utterly useless for most of the world). Yeah. Once I didn't include the links, and got dinged for that too; so now I do include the links, even though (obviously) most people don't have Buffalo library privileges. I only use that account to access large newspapers (in the case of the Ida Benfey Judd article, it's all New York Times clippings), and figure that other folks can access those by whatever means work for them, using the date/page in the cite. But I can stop including the link at all, if that works better.Penny Richards (talk) 16:23, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

And what is the problem with converting them to links that do not use the proxy: https://search-proquest-com.gate.lib.buffalo.edu/hnpnewyorktimes/docview/101517447/2FBA9FD4F0C84837PQ/17 to https://search.proquest.com/hnpnewyorktimes/docview/101517447/2FBA9FD4F0C84837PQ/17 - then people can login (if they can, I can't). Oh, I am fully aware of that, and I advocate that strongly. I however am also in favour to have correct links to the correct information - as I say, these are utterly useless. And I am not trying to suggest that you are adding these links in bad faith, I see you are meaning well. I do know that now someone else will come after you who has to correct all these links (and in some cases has to go a handful of extra miles, while you are on top of the information already. I don't have access to proquest here (maybe in the university library), but I guess that the query.nytimes.com link is somewhere on the page of the proquest result.

Just to note, this subject came up on a blacklist-discussion here, and we mitigated this from actually blacklisting these links (implement an edit filter, the one that you are now tripping regularly). I ran into your links, and started looking, and based on the results of the edit filter and this discussion, I am starting to be in favour of blacklisting these - many people are ignoring the remark that these links are utterly useless to the majority of the readers of wikipedia, and for some we are better off without them than that we have to do extra work. --Dirk Beetstra ^{T C} 18:36, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

"I guess that the query.nytimes.com link is somewhere on the page of the proquest result." It isn't. That's the problem. They're annoying like that. I generally try to use links that can easily be googled if I find those first (and I do try), but I have university library access, and some subscriptions through WP:TWL; I use Proquest, JStor, EBSCO, etc., if that's where the best sources are. I'll definitely try to avoid using proxy links from now on; and I'll gladly leave out links to firewalled materials entirely, if that's really better. I have continued the original blacklist discussion I pointed you to in my previous post, and looked at the results of the EditFilter you tripped as well. That discussion now goes in the direction of disallowing the addition of these links (as most people ignored the warning and saved the link anyway - even some that are really easy to convert to a useful link, e.g. with DOIsin the link). For the ones in the filter, you now will not be able to save the edit (after a warning first). —Dirk Beetstra ^{T C} 20:56, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
