• You can now use datasets on Commons. You can see an example that is using this source. [1]
• There is a new opt-in beta feature of a wikitext mode for the visual editor. You can try it out.
• When you update a page with translations on wikis with the Translate extension the existing translations will be marked as outdated instead of removed. [2]
• The new version of MediaWiki was released to all wikis last week (calendar).
• MoodBar has been removed from the Wikimedia wikis. [3]
• The live option for the Tipsy notice tool has been removed. Gadgets and user scripts which use it need to be updated. [4]

Problems

• Editors who use Firefox 50 might get logged out or fail to save their edits. This is because of a browser bug. Until this is fixed you can enter about:config in the address bar and set network.cookie.maxPerHost to 5000. Firefox 50 is the current version of the Firefox. [5]

Recent changes

• You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [6]

Problems

• video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [7]

Changes this week

• There is a new magic word called {{PAGELANGUAGE}}. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [8]
• When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [9]
• You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas. Before you could use <ce>. <ce> should be replaced by <chem>. [10]
• You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [11]
• The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS: #wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; } You can change the number 50 to make it look like you want to. [12]
• Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [13]
• When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [14]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).

Reversion of Baltimore Ravens edit by 126.19.93.217

You removed two URLs from reference citations & removed part of the image syntax, leaving a red link. While it is true I did not scroll down far enough to see the opinion that you removed, the first three portions of your edit were indistinguishable between incompetence or vandalism, so I reverted them. Since your edit summary deleted random opinion of a user had nothing to do with the URL removals or the mangling of the image syntax, I flagged it as a misuse of the edit summary. I apologize if I misinterpreted your intent behind these mistakes. When I spot something that looks like vandalism or seems amiss, I act quickly. I would ask that you please preview your edits before saving them to avoid future mistakes in the Wikimarkup & the interpretation of your intent. We all make mistakes, particularly when we begin editing. After, seven years & 16,000 edits, I, myself, am certainly not immune to mistakes, although previewing my edits has certainly helped.

Your last edit to Baltimore Ravens looks great!

Finally, when you post to another user's talk page, please either start a new section or add to an existing section. Most editors will react pretty negatively to someone posting to the top of their page.

• ElectronPdfService will be enabled by default on Meta and German Wikipedia. This is a new way to get articles as PDF files you can download. It will come to more wikis later. [17]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 31. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from February 1. It will be on all wikis from February 2 (calendar).

Future changes

• The Community Tech team will develop more tools to handle harassment of Wikimedia editors. The goal is to give the communities better tools to find, report and evaluate harassment. They will also work on more effective blocking tools. [18][19]

Problems

• The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed. [20]

Changes this week

• Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after. [21]
• There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [22]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).

Future changes

• Tidy will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems on a number of wikis. I received the following response by email through the contact at www.uwb.edu/admin/facilities/transportation/parking.

Hi Raymond,

You can park in any numbered stall as long as you pay for the stall. There are pay machines at each lot and you pay for the space when you park. Our prices are 3 dollars for under 3 hours and 6 dollars for all day. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

@Brianhe: & @Peaceray: Hey there, thanks for asking this important question and for doing a little research on the parking. I've updated the event page with details on the rooms and building addresses. You are correct that parking for the day is $6 for all day. The garages can fill up, so it's best to leave a ten minute buffer for your travel time. I emailed Kimberly to ask her if she would recommend a garage and give us further instruction. Recent changes

• EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [25]

Problems

• The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [26]
• Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [27]

Changes this week

• The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later. [28]

• The Developer Wishlist is a list where developers prioritize tools they need. The voting closes at 14 February 23:59 (UTC). This process is only for developers.

Reversion of removed content from the page "List of people of Cuman descent"

I don't know where to post this but i saw your message about that you restored the removed content from the page "List of people of Cuman descent". I removed the content because there is absolutely no source about the ethnic origin of them, and it's all false, (mostly) made by Hungarian nationalists. • You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find words even if you forget the diacritics. It also works if you use diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't. [39]
• When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously it changed to the desktop view. [40]

Problems

• Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed. [41]
• Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately. [42]

• The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view. [43]
• The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from the abuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log. [44]

Saturday March 11: Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon @ MoMA

Join us at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Education and Research Building at the Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54th Street, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. There will be childcare, snacks, multiple trainings and panel discussions. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend. This year’s edit-a-thon kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with a conversation about information activism with writer Joanne McNeil and Data & Society Research Institute Fellow Zara Rahman, moderated by Kimberly Drew, the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, creator of the Tumblr “Black Contemporary Art,” and the person behind @museummammy on Instagram. New question about editing

Hi Peaceray,

I've been an editor a long time, but rarely make changes. Usually when I'm doing research and find a change or citation that needs updating. Today I ran across an entry that I believe needs editing, but wanted some guidance before I did so.

There is a section in Influence and reception that seems to just be personal opinion, specifically: →Credibility—a Kirkus review is respected throughout the industry and by media and libraries →Marketing tool—a good Kirkus review is a valuable marketing tool, great for a blurb on a press release, or to be placed on your site, or as an editorial review on retailer sites →Personal gratification—every author I know feels great when their Kirkus review has good things to say.

Am i correct that this is personal opinion and should be removed or rewritten?

@BookReviewer: Well, it certainly smacks of WP:PROMO, but more importantly, it is a copyright violation (see WP:COPYVIO) as the text exists in selfpublishingadvice.org/publishing-is-a-kirkus-review-worth-the-price/, which has a June 13, 2014 publication date that precedes the addition of that text to the article. I would say remove that text ASAP with an edit summary of [[WP:COPYVIO]]: copied from http://selfpublishingadvice.org/publishing-is-a-kirkus-review-worth-the-price/.

No one can argue with a WP:COPYVIO.

Recent changes

• The Save page button now says Publish page or Publish changes on the Wikimedia wikis except for Wikipedias and Wikinewses. This change will come to Wikipedias later. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately. Publish page is when you save a new page and Publish changes when you edit an existing page. [50]
• DMOZ no longer works. Templates that use DMOZ can be redirected to archive.org or another mirror. DMOZ has been removed from the RelatedSites extension on Wikivoyage. [51]
• You can see monthly page views when you click on Page information in the sidebar. Developers can also get monthly page views through the API. [52]
• The Linter extension is now on smaller Wikimedia wikis. It helps editors find some wikitext errors so they can be fixed. It will come to other Wikimedia wikis later. The extension will be able to find more errors later. [53]
• The MediaWiki-Vagrant portable development environment has been updated to use Debian Jessie. This means local development and testing will be more like on the majority of Wikimedia production servers. [54]

Problems

• On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. If this doesn't work, please report it. [55]

• When you edit with the visual editor, you will be able to switch the direction you write in from right-to-left to left-to-right as you are editing. This is especially important for editors who edit in languages that write from right to left. You can do this with a tool in the editing menu. @173.179.145.202: It is fine to edit anything that seems like bias, but wholesale copy & pasting needs to follow the guideline for copying within Wikipedia as well as any other guidelines. While sometimes is best to be bold, in an article that has edits from nearly 300 editors, I think some consensus & discussion on Talk:Elizabeth Holmes is appropriate.

Also, I do think that there is some negative coverage in the Questions about Theranos section, & the Awards and recognition section does state that 'Following the scrutiny over the Theranos lab controversy, Fortune named Holmes one of the "World's Most Disappointing Leaders" for 2016.' If you want to expand on that, please do, but please adhere to the editing guidelines.

A probable mistake

In this edit you posted a Template:Uw-tdel3 warning, but your edit summary referred to Template:Uw-tdel4, so presumably you intended a level 4 warning and posted the wrong one by mistake. This is of no importance, but I thought I would let you know so that you can watch out for similar mistakes in future. @JamesBWatson: Thanks for pointing this out. I usually use Twinkle for user warnings, but I think in this case, because there were section headings after the March 2017 section heading, I was trying to post manually under that heading. I think I made a typo in the template syntax, copied & pasted to the summary, saw my mistake in the body but only managed to correct it there.

I know you admins must rely on the edit summaries to determine up front about the warnings that other editors are make to a particular editor. Sorry if I created any confusion about the matter.

Question about creating a new page

Hi again,

So I wanted to create a page for Graham Brown, American thriller author that has co-written books with Clive Cussler. He is on the disambiguation page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Brown already. I don't have complete info about him, but wanted to at least start the page so I did a draft so far https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Graham_Brown_(writer). So I've checked the Making Your First Page article but ran into a couple of quesions: Can I use the official bio photo with permission and how to I mark that? I have a year of birth, but not day/month. Is that necessary? I was using another author page as my example. I want to link to the books he's written, and provide a quick summary. My assumption is as a co-author of two NYT best-selling novels he qualifies as a writer of note and deserves his own page.

You keep complaining about Camila Cabello page and page don't have no picture and you keep putting old 2013 picture. I simply asked somebody to upload new pic. @Outlawstar720: You have offered no argument as to why an older picture is unusable. There are plenty of pictures in commons:Category:Camila Cabello, & they happen to be all from 2013. Any image from Commons that illustrates something or somebody in an article is generally considered acceptable. As you have not stated what your objection is to the image, none of us knows what the problem is. Please note the proper place to discuss this is at Talk:Camila Cabello, but as of As of 17 April 2017, 04:00:00 UTC, you have not posted anything there.

I would argue that is not our responsibility to provide a newer picture, but yours. As I had mentioned in one of the edit summaries, you can upload pictures at commons:Special:UploadWizard. However, you do need to ensure that the image meets the licensing requirements.

• When administrators, bureaucrats and stewards make a user a member of a user group they can now set an expiry date. A user group is for example "administrators" or "bots". This means that they can give someone user rights for a limited time. This is similar to how blocks and page protections can be limited in time. Special:UserRights will have new options for this. Problems

• Since the data centre test last week the content translation tool has been disabled. This is because of a database problem. It will be back as soon as the problem has been solved. [77]

I presume this comment, which you made on my edit to Emma Morano, is meant ironically, given how 'snarky' it is? Even you yourself instantly edited your comment on my talk page. @Smurfmeister: I do believe that this edit summary, "not a cocaine overdose at an orgy or a snapped bungee rope" is a personal expression of snarkiness unrelated to the article. If you want to dicuss the lack of a cause of death, check your snark at the door., was sufficient, given the definition of snark, although after reading that definition, perhaps snide comments would have been clearer.

Regarding my edit & reverted edit at your talk page, I often use Twinkle & I was looking for something that addressed the comments that you left on Talk:Emma Morano. I navigated to TW-->Warn, then to Only warning (4im), then to the Behavior in articles submenu, which had an item {{uw-joke4im}}: Using improper humor. That seemed appropriate enough from the description, but unfortunately I skipped previewing it. {{uw-joke4im}} then seemed far, far harsher than I had intended, so I reverted it.

I freely admit that I make mistakes. The latter was a mistake & I apologize for it; the former was not & I stand by it.

• Scripts using very old deprecated wikibits functions show errors. These functions have not worked since 2013. You should fix or disable broken scripts. You can see examples of how to upgrade scripts. This is the same thing as Tech News wrote about in issue 2017/16. You need to add mw.loader.using( 'mediawiki.util' ) block for your scripts also, or add mediawiki.util dependency in gadget ResourceLoader section in MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition. [81][82]

• Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for 20 to 30 minutes on 3 May. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. You can read more about this.

Problems

• Some users have a problem with the watchlist. Some changes in categories make the watchlist a blank page. The developers are working on this. Until this is fixed you can try some things that have helped other editors if you have this problem. You can turn on Hide categorization of pages in your watchlist preferences. You can turn off Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent in your watchlist preferences. You can remove problematic categories from Special:EditWatchlist/raw. [85]
• There was a problem with the visual editor for several days. You could not save edits that triggered a CAPTCHA. This would for example be when a new user added external links in references. This was fixed on 2 May. [86]

Changes this week

• When you edit you can switch between the visual editor and the wikitext editor. This works if the wiki you edit has the visual editor. The menu will now say Visual editing and Source editing instead of Switch to visual editing and Switch to code editing. This is because it was confusing when the menu said you could switch to the editor you were already using. [87]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).

• The mediawiki.util library does not load automatically any more. Your Special:MyPage/common.js may use it. If you have technical problems that started a couple of weeks ago you can try adding mw.loader.using( 'mediawiki.util' ).done(function(){ as the first line in the file and }); as a last one. • The RevisionSlider extension will be a default feature on all wikis. RevisionSlider is an easier way to move between changes in the page history. It has been a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia and a beta feature on all wikis. You will be able to turn it off in your preferences. [95]

• Administrators will soon be able to search through deleted pages. [96][97]

I have found your work on the Herb Kane site exquisite. After a long absence I have returned to editing (probably temporarily) with the short term goal of weeding out a bunch of bad writing and inaccurate bits in this article from 2012 or so. I have posted my general intentions to get to this, and I wanted to let you know there is not a single one of your contributions that I take issue with; to the contrary, every one is a gem. You are much better at this than I ever was. Two things: I see you are going to the Met thing. I have my own vision for what the Met's entry itself should be. You might look at my first ever attempt at Wikipedia in the article on the Astor Court. Secondly, once I have restored accuracy to the Kane article, I will let you know; you might want to make sure I did things up to your standard, because I find that a very high bar. I currently have lived the last three years in the Seattle area after 14 years on Oahu, & am part of meta:Cascadia Wikimedians User Group.

• Wikimedia wikis can show fewer links to articles in other languages. This is to make it easier to find the languages likely to be useful to the reader or editor. Everyone can still click to see the full list. Logged-in users who use the compact language links will see languages they have in their Babel box on their user page in the first, shorter list. • You can choose what dates to look at when you look at a user's contributions. [111]

• Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron. You can tell the developers what you need the PDF service to be able to do. Electron already works on German Wikipedia. It will be on English Wikipedia later this week so you can test it there too. • The Architecture Committee will change and get a new name. You can read and comment on the draft that describes the new committee.

Re: Citation deterioration on United States presidential elections in which the winner lost the popular vote

Hello @Peaceray: First of all, sorry for my poor English. Last night I was translating the Spanish version of the article United States presidential elections in which the winner lost the popular vote, (Elecciones presidenciales en los Estados Unidos en las que el ganador perdió el voto popular).
When I copied the paragraph of the elections between Trump and Clinton, I noticed that the photo of Trump was missing. The only thing I remember I did was change that photo, I do not know how I changed the rest. I reversed the edition to the previous version. I'm sorry for the trouble caused. Vandalism or hacking? "HTC 10" page

Hi Peaceray, You offered guidance on my talk page in March 2016. I've just removed a bit of anti-brand trolling from the "HTC 10" smartphone page. But it is not simple vandalism. My reading of the page history: the bad-faith(?) comment was there from the first version of the page (13 April 2016). My reading of "real world" history: the bad-faith(?) comment refers to events in August-September 2016, five or six months later. Either the author had precognition, or there is hacking of the wikipedia article history. The comment I removed purports to be part of the title of an external link, reference [3], "and is more likely to explode than the galaxy s7 edge". Of course it was the Samsung Note 7 that was recalled (Sept 2016), not the Galaxy S7. But there were no issues with the Galaxy s7, and I believe the comment is playing on the fears generated around the Note 7. In any case, the text "and is more likely to explode than the galaxy s7 edge" does not appear in the linked article which it purports to come from (Dan Seifert, the Verge). • There was a problem with maps on Wikimedia wikis that used <mapframe> when you clicked on the link to another map service. Open Street Map or Google Maps are examples of other map services. If you had marked a place on the map the marker would not be in the same place on the other map service. It was in the middle of the map. This has now been fixed. [129]

• Very old and inactive unpublished translations in the Content Translation database will be removed. This is because of technical maintenance. If you want to keep the unfinished translation you need to open it before 6 July with the Content Translation tool. You can continue working on it later. • EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. It works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/07 issue. [130]

Consensus is not verifiability. (!!!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!)

Yes, this is often incorrectly rendered because many contributors speak either poor English or Spanish. However, a read of the team’s history will suffice—they were originally the company team of Eagle Oil, called “El Águila” in Spanish. Their kits were red—like the Redstockings of Cincinnati—and as such they adopted a similar name. Thus, the Veracruz club came to be known as the Rojos del Águila; literally “Reds of the Eagle.” (N.B. In Spanish, the major-league Reds are known as los Rojos de Cincinnati.)

Furthermore, Red Eagles is easy enough to say in Spanish: “Águilas Rojas.” Crucially, this is not the name of the team.

Nonetheless, because this has been a persistent issue, I've included a comment in the wikicode; I had planned on putting one on the talk page, anyway, but no one looks at that.

Again: please consult with other editors before unilaterally reverting edits in subjects with which you are less familiar. —Wiki Wikardo 10:01, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

@Wiki Wikardo: "Consensus is not verifiability" is nonsensical since you have not provided a source to verify the translation.

Your statement that "I had planned on putting one on the talk page, anyway, but no one looks at that." violates the Wikipedia:Consensus policy. If I do not see you starting a discussion to reach an consensus through discussion on the talk page to seek a within the next day or so, I plan to start reverting again as your edits depart from the consensus by edit.

I am perfectly aware that Rojos del Águila de Veracruz literally translates to Reds of the Eagle of Veracruz. Please do not assume another editor does not understand this. I find the statement that I was "unilaterally reverting edits in subjects with which you are less familiar" to be condescending as I was reverting to the most common translation in the history & documenting why in the edit summary, & your statement implies that I do not understand the Spanish. The question remains as to the best English translation & requires consensus. Your comments on my talk page largely belong on the article's talk page.

My apologies if I seem contentious in my remarks. I value the be bold editing guideline, but I have little patience with editors who ignore a request to reach consensus on a talk page, as per the editors should treat each other with respect and civility pillar. Editors should attempt consensus when asked. I find that editors that ignore this to be disrespectful.

Fair enough—I, too, take umbrage when other editors repeatedly revert long-standing issues with no consultation—at least you were good enough to leave an explanation in your edit summary.

I am not at all skirting consensus, I’m just going on the fact that soliciting comment on the talk page is often screaming into a black hole… I’m certainly not opposed to discussing things there.

However, it’s possible for many people to be wrong about something. That various editors have come to the same conclusion should not trump other established norms of reliability.

I’m aware that, regardless of the source language, sometimes you just have to throw up your hands and say, “that’s it, this has become the established English usage,” such as chaise lounge. However, I don’t think this is the case here, where the subject matter is not a common one in English-language media. If a closer translation exists in reliable sources, I think it’s incumbent upon Wikipedia to go with the more faithful rendering.

Quite frankly I saw this as an open-and-shut case—the only verification needed being a dictionary—but apparently you do not. So, to the talk page, Batman! —Wiki Wikardo 22:02, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

I am content with the page as it stands. I have found a reference that predates the earliest Wikipedia version using the name Red Eagles. Do I believe it was a sloppy mistake made by a harried reporter on a deadline whose Spanish is less than fluent? Yes. This is apparently a tricky one in any language. Even in Mexico, “Águilas de Veracruz” is not entirely unknown. Anyone familiar with North American sports sees the name of an animal and a geographic designation and figures, “OK, I got this.” I’ll admit, my brain sort of locked up and refused to process when I first came across the name, which is how I became aware of the club’s history. It doesn’t make sense otherwise, any more than, say, “Nippon Ham Fighters.”

• Some pages show the error Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject. This problem happens on pages with a Lua module that uses Wikidata. The developers are working on fixing the problem. You can fix a page by opening it for editing and then saving without changing anything. [142]
• Wikidata and German Wikipedia could not be edited for an hour on 28 July. You can read why and how we could avoid it in the future in the incident report.

Your edit to Fissure of the nipple

Greetings! I appreciate your good faith edit to Fissure of the nipple. There is no reliable and acceptable medical reference that I can find to support the content of the article. Fissure of the nipple is a medical condition and by consensus in Project Medicine, all sources for the article are supposed to be from medical textbooks, systematic reviews and meta-analysis from the past five years, official medical organizations, professional medical organizations, and governmental health websites. I looked and couldn't find any reference to this condition in the references I looked at. This article or its redirect will be discussed at Articles for deletion with the same rationale. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page. You are also free to revert your own edit so that readers of the encyclopedia will not end up being confused by unsourced content.

@Barbara (WVS): I don't believe that Wikipedia:Blow it up and start over applies here. I think a better course of action would be to ask an administrator to delete the Jogger's nipple redirect to Fissure of the nipple, then move Fissure of the nipple to Jogger's nipple, then gradually improve the article by adding the appropriate citations & content referencing those citations. The proper course for a poor article on a notable subject is not to delete it, but to improve it. Peaceray (talk) 11:34, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

• You can get an email when a page on your watchlist was edited. You can choose not to get emails for minor edits. There is a bug that means that you then don't get an email when someone does a normal edit after a minor edit. The developers are working on fixing this. Until it has been fixed you can activate "Email me also for minor edits of pages and files" at the bottom of "User profile" in your preferences if you want to. [147]
• The thanks button sometimes didn't work for mobile users. This was because of a new bug and has now been fixed. [148]

Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. [149]
• Links to sections on Wikipedia don't work well in languages that don't use the Latin script. The URL in the address bar in your browser shows Latin characters like .D0.A1.D1.81.D1.8B.D0.BB.D0.BA.D0.B8 instead of the section heading in the wiki's language. Links to sections in non-Latin scripts will be in the script of that wiki in the future. This will happen in the next few months. [150][151]
• Wiki pages printed by the web browser "Print" function will have an updated style. This new style will be similar to the when you download a page as PDF. It will be better at showing tables, infoboxes and headings. [152][153]

If they try from a device or IP address that have logged in to your account before you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can turn this off or choose to get an email notification in your preferences. You can also turn on to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address. [165]

• Wikitext syntax highlighting is a beta feature on Wikimedia wikis with text written from left to right. This beta feature is based on CodeMirror. You can now search through the entire article with CTRL+F or cmd+F when you edit. Before it just searched through a part of the article. The developers are also fixing a couple of other bugs. • Administrators on wikis that use Structured Discussions as a beta feature or by default can now create and move Structured Discussions boards. Structured Discussions was previously called Flow. [185]

• When you edit a template with the visual editor it follows the template's format configuration on how to save it. You can now change the format in more powerful ways if your wiki wants it. [197][198]
• The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It has been a beta feature for the last five months. You can now try out the new interface on a page where you will actually get simulated edit conflicts. You can give feedback to the developers.

Problems

• There is a problem with recent changes pages and your watchlist that show a large number of pages. Until it is fixed, Wikidata edits will not be shown on recent changes or in your watchlist on Commons or Russian Wikipedia. If necessary, Wikidata edits will be removed from all wikis. [199]
• Notifications are not working for some actions. For example some users don't get a notification when they are mentioned. The developers are working on fixing this. [200]
• Users on some wikis could not change their preferences. This has now been fixed. [201]

• Editors and readers who still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP will not be able to use Wikipedia from 17 October. Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP can't connect securely to the wikis. When we allow them to do so it means that we get less security for everyone else. If you use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP you can install Firefox 52 ESR instead. Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. [202]

Apologies for my unsourced edits

Mr. Peaceray,

I sincerely apologize for adding unsourced materials to Ann Dunham and other pages. I appreciate your integrity and accountability when it comes to editing on Wikipedia. I do not mean to add content without sourcing it (something I'm still working on) but do have some interesting opinions on what I'm reading, especially on people like Ann Dunham and other figures and concepts I come across on Wikipedia (no destructive intentions, I assure you). Whatever happens, please do not block me from editing such pages. I hope you don't think I'm a bad person for making these changes (even if done unprofessionally).

In other news, I admire how interested you are in the Wikipedia/Literary lifestyle and attend various talks and conferences on this. I'd like to get into that too if possible. Do you have any suggestions as to how?

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at NYU ITP Tisch School of the Arts (4th floor) at 721 Broadway in Manhattan. We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants. We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities. We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. • The diff you see when you compare two different versions of a page has changed on MediaWiki.org and the test wiki. This is to make it easier to find a text change in a moved paragraph. It will hopefully soon come to more wikis. You can report bugs in Phabricator. [210]

• If you use the Chrome web browser on Android you can see a download icon on the mobile website. You can download a formatted PDF. It will work in other mobile browsers in the future. [214]
• The abuse filter now has a function called get_matches. You can use it to store matches from regular expressions – one of each capturing group. You can read more in Phabricator.

• Last week's MediaWiki version didn't come to all Wikipedias because of a database crash. It will be on all wikis on 20 November. [215][216][217]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Peaceray. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

• It is now possible to upload MP3 files to Commons. Only users with MP3 file upload rights can upload MP3 files. [223]
• You can now use live updates for recent changes if you use the new filters. This feature updates the filtered recent changes every three seconds when you activate it. [224]

• Very old versions of the Opera Web browser are no longer supported. This means that technical development will not be tested to make sure it works with those Opera versions. Use Opera 15 or above or another browser if you have problems. [226]
• Almost 170 wikis with no high-priority errors in Linter categories will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. A few larger wikis such as German and Italian Wikipedia will also make this switch. It will happen on 5 December. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [227][228]

• Filter by number of edits or filter by time range have been grouped on a same menu on the recent changes page if you use the new filters. The "View new changes since $1" link is now more prominent. [233]
• Some of the web fonts that were provided by the Universal Language Selector extension are being removed. This is to reduce the load time on pages. The web fonts were added many years ago to help users read text in scripts which did not have fonts or had broken fonts. This is not the case any more. You can check the status page for a list of all web fonts and whether they are currently being used and especially for special requirements. [234]

Hey there; oops I double checked the link and indeed it is to the symposium (I had it confused with another link which was a direct "buy this book" page). However, I do have serious doubts about anything on that website being cited as a reliable source for wikipedia, or being given prominence anywhere. The author appears to have no qualifications as an historian or art critic, is largely self published, and espouses a number of what can only be described as unusual theories that are not at all supported by any legitimate historian or art theorist (for instance, that Leonardo da Vinci married Isabella of Aragon, Duchess of Milan, and they had several children together?!). Even in that particular symposium article, the only cites are to her own work; the majority of the portraits on the page have NOT been identified as Catherine Sforza by anyone but herself; quite a few have been attributed to other artists and as being of other people. For instance, fig.3, which is actually of Caterina, is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, not that it appears in any known catalogues of his works. And thats just a start... • Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 8 January 2018.

Problems

• When you import a page from another wiki the usernames of the users who edited the article on the wiki you imported it from are shown in the article history. This should link to the users on the original wiki. A script to fix this caused problems for Wikidata and German Wikipedia. It also created a large number of SUL accounts on wikis where editors had never edited. [235]
• Some bot owners got email about their bots logging in from a new computer. If this is from one or a couple of wikis, you can turn these messages off in your preferences on those wikis until the problem has been solved. If not, you can report more about the problem in Phabricator.
