The Kindness Campaign

This user is a member of the Kindness Campaign

Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better the quality of life at the Wikipedia through Kindness and Recognition of Users. It is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. All too often we get too wrapped up in our own tasks to recognize the hard work and determination of others. This WikiProject aims to correct that injustice, even if only a little bit, by making a conscious effort to acknowledge exceptional effort, skill, and commitment. It is motivated by the belief that a little kindness goes a long way, and in the end results in a better Wikipedia experience for everybody.

Remembering Brian Boulton

[Message text copied here from User talk:Brianboulton#Remembering Brian:]
Dear colleagues,
I wanted to create something by which those of us who have had the pleasure of working with him could commemorate our friend Brian Boulton, who died peacefully on 9 December 2019. Although userboxes are often used for frivolous purposes, it occurred to me that it would be meaningful simply to display the following userbox on our user pages:

This Wikipedian remembers
Brian Boulton.

To add this userbox to your page, just apply: {{User:Pdebee/UBX/Remembers}}
With kind regards;
Patrick. Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!)

Remembering Sarah (SlimVirgin)

[Message text copied here from User talk:SlimVirgin#Remembering Sarah:]
Dear colleagues,
I created a generic userbox to commemorate our absent Wikifriends, and I keep a copy for Sarah at my user page:

This Wikipedian remembers
SlimVirgin.

To add this userbox to your user page, just copy/paste:
{{User:Pdebee/UBX/RemembersAbsentFriend|SlimVirgin}}
With kind regards;

Bergö moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Bergö, is not suitable as written to remain published. While it appears to be notable, it needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. There are large sections which are wholly uncited. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. I did this rather than removing the uncited material in the article, which I felt would be more disruptive. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask on my talk page. When you have the required sourcing (and every assertion needs a source), and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Or feel free to ping me to take another look.Onel5969 TT me 14:31, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Dear colleague,
Thank you for encouraging me to improve the citations in the subject article; I had added the {{cn}} templates myself, with the goal of addressing these later. The challenge was that the original article in Finnish was lacking in this regard, most likely due to the fact that Bergö is such a small place. In any case, I have made a start yesterday and have identified a couple more sources that I will add in the coming days, although I have had to rely on the local community's website (in Swedish) to source some of the original text (History, etc.) that I had initially google-translated from the Finnish article. I will contact you again when I am done in a few days' time; my aim is to source the translated text as much as possible, and remove prose for which I can find no source(s). By the way, this article is part of my bigger project on Places in Finland. Thank you once again for your intervention, and I value your guidance and assistance. I remain hopeful we might be able to keep this article, for completeness, even though Bergö is such a small and remote place.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 10:47, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Primary sources can be okay to use to satisfy WP:VERIFY, although not always. For example, using a primary source that says "X is located 25 NW of Y" is fine to use a primary source. But to use it for "X has the best sturgeon fishing in all of Y", would not be okay. Hope this helps. Let me know if you want me to take another look after you've finished. Dear colleague,
Thank you for your reply. I am currently away from home but yes, I understand and will contact you again in a few days’ time, when I am done. Thanks again for your helpful assistance.

Dear colleague,
As agreed above, I have now completed the task of adding citations and have also adjusted the prose accordingly. At your convenience, please therefore review the latest draft and move it back to main article space if appropriate. Thank you once again for your helpful guidance.

Nice job. I've accepted it back into mainspace. Keep up the good work. Onel5969 TT me 19:06, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

since Sarah passed. I know less than nothing about UBX. Is there a tutorial on how to make them somewhere? I would love to similarly honor DGG with whom I worked closely. Thanks! Star Mississippi 14:05, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Dear colleague Star Mississippi,
Thank you for your message! The userbox I created for Sarah is in fact a generic one:
{{User:Pdebee/UBX/RemembersAbsentFriend|Username}}
All you need to do is replace "Username" with the name of the user, without its "User:" prefix, so that:
{{User:Pdebee/UBX/RemembersAbsentFriend|DGG}} renders:
This Wikipedian remembers
DGG.
I am so sorry to learn of the loss of your colleague and friend David Goodman, and send you my condolences.
As for creating your own userboxes, Wikipedia:Userboxes and Template:Userbox are good starting points, as is the Help:Userbox Maker. You could also peruse the Wikipedia:Userboxes/Galleries, and you could even consider joining the Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes!
Some years ago now, I went bananas with making userboxes and even had a "Userbox Factory" page! It was good fun while it lasted but I eventually got cured from my acute userboxitis, although I still keep some of my own favourites, here!
Please keep well, and thank you for all your contributions to our encyclopaedia.

Thanks so much for your help and the links. I will credit you on his Talk where I have posted this for others who might want to use it.
I know just enough not to break the format of my user page when I add one. And that might be generous since several editors have fixed it when I did. THanks again Star Mississippi 16:32, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
You are most welcome, Star Mississippi, and thank you for your thoughtful consideration.

Getting a page assessed

Hi, do you know how you can get a page assessed? I'm thinking of putting up one of the pages I've created recently as a test how it goes.

Btw I responded on the talk page. JaikeV (talk) 12:06, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Dear JaikeV,
Thank you for your message.
1. Depending on your specific objective, you could request either a WikiProject-associated peer review, or a GA review. These two starting points should set you in the right direction, but please feel free to come back to me if necessary.
2. I apologise for failing to acknowledge your earlier explanation about Belgium and the Hanseatic League, but will do so as soon as possible, as I am away from home at the moment; thank you once again for taking the time.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 13:35, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer! A GA review may be a little too ambitious, the page I wanted to put up is Peterhof (Novgorod). I'll think about it.
Don't worry about that discussion. It's not urgent and it's fine to take your time. JaikeV (talk) 08:42, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Dear JaikeV,
Thank you for your reply.
1. If you follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Peer review, you will be able to set the topic parameter to “geography”, since your article is about a city.
2. I have recently acknowledged your other reply but am still confused; so, thank you in advance for your continued patience with me, and for your time when you get to it.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 09:09, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Typo Team Count

Thanks for updating the Typo Team member count. I didn't get a chance to do it myself.—Bde1982 (talk) 22:50, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Phyllis le Grand (or Le Grand)

I look forward to seeing your new article. You said here "TYPO", but in writing the Robert Michaelis article I had preferred "le". There are plenty of sources, and "Le" is used more often than "le", but it seems to be a real name, used for instance when they were married, and as Michaelis was French I suspect Phyllis was too. Many writers would believe "le" must be wrong and would change it, so my instinct is that the French form is probably better. But you will need to decide what is preferred in the reliable sources, not the unreliable ones. Moonraker (talk) 02:12, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Dear Colleague,
Thank you for your nice and encouraging message!
First of all, please forgive me for delay in acknowledging it; I have been travelling for the last three days and reached my destination today, where I am now able to connect to WiFi. Secondly, thank you for your interest in my forthcoming article, in which we could easily insert a note stating that the spelling of her name is disputed, and elaborate on the alternative sources as required. In fact, “Legrand” is equally common in francophone countries, so we might even come across this form. I can’t remember what persuaded me to elect “Le Grand” in her case, but I am sure I’ll be able to trace it back once I have returned home in a few weeks time. Finally, please feel free to contribute to my draft if you wish or feel inclined: User:Pdebee/Phyllis Le Grand; it still requires a great deal of work and polishing, but please be assured that I will appreciate your participation; thank you in advance! I will make contact again when I am back home, at my desktop. Until then, please keep well and thanks again for making contact.
With kind regards for now;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 21:09, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
P.S. Oh, and all the upper cases in “TYPO: ...” are designed as easy eye-catchers to help me identify and report my contributions to the Typo team when I look back on my past edits. I am aware that using capitals normally equates to “shouting”, but this was certainly not my intent in this case.
Thanks for the link, will take a look over the week-end. I hadn't searched for Legrand, but you are right, I have found that spelling used for the singer a few times in the early 20th century. And a recent American book, Dan Dietz, The Complete Book of 1920s Broadway Musicals (2019), annoyingly invents a new spelling, "LeGrand", see page 122. The Americans do not like gaps. As you say, the different spellings can be covered. It would help to find out how Phyllis signed her name. Moonraker (talk) 22:54, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

hiya, no worries at all! happy editing, Tom B (talk) 18:07, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
