Changing nationality flags in articles
[edit]Hello there Paul. Recently, I've noticed that you've changed several British flags in articles to the specific national flags. Unfortunately, this is against a consensus formed over time for the motorsport-related articles. Can you please refrain from making these changes in future? Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 20:53, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hi there Lukeno94.
- Thanks for your comment. To be fair, it was one flag I changed (well, one driver's flag, albeit in several places) for a racing driver (Andrew Watson). I had contacted him directly to seek clarification as to his nationality as he was listed as British (being born in Belfast) but lives in the Republic of Ireland.
- I thought I was doing the right thing by asking what he considered his nationality to be, so my changes were done in good faith. Having now read up on various discussions about nationality as far as Wikipedia is concerned, I now see that it is in fact a minefield.
- Odd though, that someone's own nationality has to be decided upon by certain Wikipedia editors rather than the person themselves. I have a lot to learn it seems.
- Paul ss1 (talk) 12:24, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- It's standard convention to refer to anyone from England, Northern Ireland, Wales or Scotland as "British" in these articles. And I've seen you change a couple of flags (the Union Flag to the Scottish Flag, as well as using the Northern Irish Flag.) As to why we pick the nationalities for them; it's a long-standing consensus to do it this way, going back to the very early days of Wikipedia. I knew you were acting in good faith; that's why I came here to discuss this with you, and didn't slap a templated warning on. Nationalities everywhere are a minefield, and can be quite controversial sometimes - WP:LAME may be an interesting read for some of the silly edit wars that have happened over similar things :) Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 12:30, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- I don't remember the Scottish one, but I'll take your word for it. Thanks for the links too. Paul ss1 (talk) 12:35, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
