Autonomics
[edit]Autonomics refers to the ever-changing economics of the automotive industry[1] and the bailout measures in effect from the Obama administration.[2]
It describes the changes this industry is experiencing due to state of the economy, the automakers' products and strategies, the price of oil, the environment, and more. Autonomics is important because as it changes it challenges the status quo of this largely static, well-established industry, especially in the United States.
Fundamental shifts in the automotive industry have taken place in recent years. Toyota recently surpassed General Motors as the largest manufacturer in the world. General Motors and Chrysler have asked the US Government for billions of dollars in loans to keep them operational. As the financial crisis continues, these pressures and forces will likely be more prominent.
Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth professor Chris Trimble describes autonomics as the ability to own a large vehicle but save money by buying a very small car, and only using the larger one when necessary[3]. Trimble takes a microeconomic approach to describing autonomics.
Drivers
[edit]Availability of credit and lending
[edit]The recent credit crunch has led to a reduction in the amount of funds available to firms and consumers. This has adversely affected the automotive industry, as not as many car loans have been available to the public since the crisis began.
Employment
[edit]In the US, in the past year, about 400,000 jobs have been lost. [4] In Michigan, home of the Big Three automakers, unemployment is at its highest since 1984, at 11.6%, with a loss of 69,000 manufacturing jobs.[5]
The Price of oil
[edit]Oil hit $147 per barrel in July 2008[6] and consumers paid much more for their gasoline than previously.
Environmental concerns
[edit]Consumers are becoming increasingly aware and concerned with pollution caused by cars. This has led to the introduction of green technologies. Electric and hydrogen cars have been around for decades [7] and are now gaining popularity. Models such as the Toyota Prius have been very successful. [8]
Globalization
[edit]China and India are playing a larger role in automotive manufacturing, both for domestic consumption and as suppliers to firms internationally.[9]
More affordable cars
[edit]On 23 March 2009, Tata launched the Nano, reportedly the world's cheapest car. This opens up opportunities to consumers that could not perviously afford to own a car in India. EconomyWatch.com refers to this as autonomics. [10]

- Hello, my apologies for not leaving this note sooner. I was the editor that nominated the article for deletion. I genuinely hope you don't find this discouraging, although I know from experience this is hard to do. Please contribute to the discussion on the nomination page. It's certainly possible it will not be deleted if you make a good case for notability and others agree with you; I'm completely open to changing my mind if you convince me. Writing an article can be very difficult if you're new to Wikipedia and it often takes some time and experience before success. I'd be happy to request the article be moved to your draft space so you can continue to work on it; alternatively, you can post the sources on the nomination page or add them to the article for others to consider. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know and I genuinely do hope you're not discouraged. Best wishes, // Timothy :: talk 02:41, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
