[edit]I couldn't help but notice you removed a reference that you declared "inappropriate". You correctly identified a reference that was out-of-place, but inappropriate is not the correct adjective.
I believe a correct adjective would be "unnecessary".

- No, it really was "inappropriate". It was a 'note' that was formatted as a reference, but it wasn't a reference at all.PatricKiwi (talk) 08:07, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
My IPv6 address has been blocked for a bogus reason
[edit]PatricKiwi (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
Caught by a colocation web host block but this host or IP is not a web host. My IP address is 2001:470:82E9:0:5952:71D2:A217:2ED5. Place any further information here. PatricKiwi (talk) 07:55, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Decline reason:
Looking at hurricane electric's website - the services that they appear to offer are 'IP Transit', 'Layer 2 Transport', 'Colocation', and 'Dedicated Server'. !ɘM γɿɘυϘ⅃ϘƧ 08:38, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- @User:SQL: So what? I'm a (logged-in) user, not an IP. Why should you care that I happen to be using a Hurricane Electric tunnel to get IPv6? PatricKiwi (talk) 13:30, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
- This is explained here, and here. It is in order to protect the project due to how frequently Colocation / webhosts are abused. !ɘM γɿɘυϘ⅃ϘƧ 22:23, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
- @User:SQL: But how could I 'abuse' Wikipedia if I'm a logged-in user? I can (possibly) understand blocking such addresses for IPs, but not for logged-in users. (In any case, I don't think my IPv6 address - via the Hurricane Electric tunnel - ever changes.) This feels like abuse of power to me. PatricKiwi (talk) 06:49, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
- This block likely is not addressed directly at you. Open, anonymizing proxies like, and including he's service have historically been heavily abused per the checkuser logs. Socking / undeclared paid editing rings / serial harassers / etc, while logged in, and logged out. Literally anyone with administrative access to a pc can set up a tunnel, and use it to change their IP at will, ad infinitum. !ɘM γɿɘυϘ⅃ϘƧ 07:01, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

Moving Puriri
[edit]Hi PatricKiwi; I was just wondering why you chose to move Puriri to its Latin name. FLORATITLES says to use scientific names "except when a plant has an agricultural, horticultural, economic or cultural role or use that makes it more prominent in some other field than in botany" which surely applies with pūriri, a popular garden/timber tree and most-commonly known by its Māori name (as it is throughout the article). All NZ native trees should probably be moved to their Māori names, by this criterion. (And if they do they should use macrons too, since that's what reliable sources seem to have switched to.) —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 21:59, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- The exceptions listed are plants that are very well known in the English-speaking world outside botany: "apple, flax, rose". This doesn't come close. As far as I can tell, the page for every other New Zealand native tree/plant in Wikipedia is titled with its scientific name, including several (e.g., Agathis australis, Podocarpus totara) that are far more well known. [edit]St Arnaud
[edit]Hi PatrickKiwi - The two pronunciations of Saint Arnaud were explained in one of those "small town NZ" magazine segments on TVNZ News the other night... but they don't seem to put them on their website, dammit. Grutness...wha? 02:22, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

Re: Ettrick
[edit]Hi PatricKiwi - first, my apologies, I hadn't noticed that the origin of Ettrick's name was listed further down the page. But, grammatically, "similarly named town" is correct, even if the names are identical. "Same named town" us ungrammatical, as "same" is not an adverb. Grutness...wha? 00:59, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
Horses and cyclists
[edit]Today, I've learned that horses' age are determined the same way as those of competitive cyclists. I wasn't sure whether my edit was a true correction but thought that I would find out if the age had been correct. Thanks for the lesson! Schwede66 06:08, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

- FYI, the equivalent date in the Southern Hemisphere (including NZ) is the 1st of August. SH racehorses have their birthdays then. PatricKiwi (talk) 06:52, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for October 12
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Thierry Dusautoir, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ivorian. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay
[edit]Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
