Radiohead

Congrats on getting Kid A featured. Sorry I wasn't able to get around to offering follow-up comments on the article after my initial comments at the FAC, but I'll try to do that as soon as possible; you can always find ways to improve an FA. I was wondering if you were interested in aiming at getting Radiohead featured. There are currently few members of WikiProject Alternative music actively involved in Radiohead articles (and while I have a pretty broad taste in alternative rock ranging from grunge to indie pop to goth, I've never been able to get into Radiohead) but it's quite close to being featured article material. If you need help with this or any other articles in the scope of the WikiProject, feel free to ask. WesleyDodds 09:20, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about that, i just found the page was already created but with no text. I forgot about that "articles without broad subject matter" rule. Won't happen again. kudos, --LastmanSAC 12:11, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Why mark a USGS image with speedy deletion?

You marked the use of a USGS image at Long Valley Caldera with a speedy deletion tag. Why? It's PD. The original is at Commons. I'm completely puzzled by what you are thinking. hike395 00:21, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

I see the mixup. You tagged Image:Long Valley Caldera cross section.jpg in Long Valley Caldera for speedy deletion, but you meant the image below it. Now it's much more clear. I'll see if I can dig up the source. Thanks! hike395 07:13, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Now I'm confused again. Image:Schematic long valley caldera.gif did have a source URL -- it was a piped link. I removed the piping. Now is everything OK? hike395 07:18, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I see. You put the source link in. Thanks! Everything should be fine now. hike395 07:21, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Public domain pic

I don't understand why you marked this pic for speedy deletion. It is claimed to be a public domain pic, and, due to it's age (140 years), that seems quite likely: [1]. StuRat 22:30, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Everything about the pic, such as it's style and the age of the event, seem to support it being a public domain pic. Considering the lack of any evidence to the contrary, shouldn't we assume good faith and believe the poster when he claims that it is ? StuRat 04:08, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. StuRat 06:29, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Songwriters

Hello Alex, I am categorizing the musicians from my country Cyprus and since you are a member of wikiproject Music, I would like to ask you something. When someone who is considered composer can be considered songwriter and when not? When someone who is considered lyricist can be considered songwriter and when not? If you know I will appreciate if you answer.--KRBN 20:53, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

So all the composers of pop music can be referred as songwriters? Thank you for your answer.--KRBN 10:13, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Your speedy deletion tag placed on Georgiy Starostin

It was removed, but in the future for cases that are likely to be disputed (I'd dispute the deletion), please use the articles for deletion process instead. Thanks.--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 15:39, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

admin

Hello. i've seen some of your image work around and was wondering if you'd like to consider becoming an admin at WP:RFA. I'd gladly nominate you there, since we are always in ned or more administrators willing to work with images. Let me know of your decision. Wizardman 03:24, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed you deleted an image I was waiting for a deletion on. Could you go to a recent WP:AN/I thread where I have a list of images that need deleting, and delete those as well? Thanks! — Moe ε 20:48, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Transclusion note

Hey. When you transclude the images from here to commons, since you're an admin now you can just delete the picture that's here as opposed to just tagging it as "now on commons"; the commons image will show through in its place. Wizardman 17:00, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I see what you mean. You're certainly allowed to let it sit if you want, I just figured that that was meant for non-admins who wish to transclude images, this way an admin gets a second look and makes sure everything was done right. I'm pretty sure no one will yell at you if you wish to be bold though. (If it turns out I was wrong you can tell whoever I told you to do it :P. I think it's fine since I've done that for months.) Whatever! Deletion

Hi, I'm Luis Diego, owner of the page Luis Diego which I must say is an autobiography, and I wouldn't use it as sponsoring myself, i belive that is for MySpace, YouTube, etc. Or I could create my own web page, but no! I'm doing this because, well, someday I'll be famous, I swear, I'm working on my first album, which FYI you deleted, i have written over 200 songs, im in the process of writing a spanish book with Latin title, ive increased my expectatives after all that has happened to me, my father left my mother and me some years ago and even though i make contact with him, many things have happened and still i havent lowered my expetactives of being a singer songwriter, alright? "Whatever!" is really my first album, and i swear im gonna be famous, and please i beg you to don't erase what i do, isn't it the 'free encyclopedia'? Well, those songs, everything of that is real, maybe not yet recorded but soonly, i swear. 190.43.194.155 22:54, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

MAG article

I've tried very hard to find some way to discuss the Mines Advisory Group article, but I am re-directed to a WikiProject page and thence am lost.

I have worked in the NGO sector for over a decade but have never worked in mine action, The article on MAG astounds me - it is entirely subjective, positive and cites not one single reference.

While I agree that all NGOs should be given credit where it's due, I find it bizarre that the other organisations who work in this field (off the top of my head, Norwegian People's Aid, The HALO Trust, Handicap International) are not mentioned. IF the article were to be read by a newcomer to the aid world, and the de-mining sector in particular, they would be under the impression that MAG are at the forefront of mineclearance. This is most certainly not the case, and the fact that the entire article has been created by (mainly) only two users makes me seriously wonder as to its objectivity, in as far as there is none.

Sorry for the little rant, but most other articles concerning organisations that either I or my colleagues work for make some pretence towards balance whereas this particular article is the worst I've read in Wikipedia in the 3 years I've been a member/donor.

Pixies images

I was under the impression that fair use rationales, once written, applied to all of the image's appearances. At any rate, removing the album covers from song articles doesn't have wider community consensus, so it would be a controversial move; I would place a notice on the community portal. bravo, i never read something this *** about what a source is... in this case, the point is just to KNOW the bithdate: no one needs a source!!!! OR : you have to put in wiki all sources for all mentionned birthdates, good luck! 84.227.48.33 08:46, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I've been told to replace the previous deletion template with db-copyvio, and misunderstood its syntax.
But the claim of Fair use is spurious, because the resolution is too high (the fair use template says “low resolution”). Something needs to be done about it.

Neutrality

I note that you've added the "neutrality" tag to Eric Rosse and I believe it's with respect to the material about Colette Baron-Reid, whose husband is currently spamming every conceivable Wikipedia connection to her "psychic"/musical talents. I've removed the offensive peacock paragraph but thought I would leave the "neutrality" tag to your judgement. I'm keeping my eye on the spammer and I think you are too, for which thanks. Thanks for your comment on my talk page- this is a sampler album, each track being by a different artist, most of which have their own pages. A personnel list IMO should contain all known personnel. Fundraiser 2007 - please help during the preparation

Hi, well, I noted that messages in the village pump apparently are not really read. There are some tasks where we need the help of the community for the preparation of the fundraiser 2007 and therefore I now decided to ask single people directly. There is at least one thing where anybody can help and this is with a photo for the Flickr group. If you feel like adding something written why you love wikipedia or about which other project you love or whatever you feel matches, it would be great, but also the photo itself would be great, since it would show how the community is able to work together. Of course you do not need to put your name under the photo. If you don't want to upload it yourself on flickr you can also send it to me: scretella (at) wikimedia (dot) org. Besides that we are searching for people who can help to create buttons that link to the fundraiser to be used on peoples blogs and websites. Please find further information and examples of buttons on meta. You can see an example of how a button is integrated in a blog on my blog. Thank you for your attention and cooperation! -- 16 September 2007 Sabine —Preceding unsigned comment added by SabineCretella (talkcontribs) 13:56, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi. This image was released by User:Christopherpeterson under a {{cc-by-3.0}} license. Christopher Peterson also maintains the http://www.christopherpeterson website linked to as the image source. Although on that website he lists this image under a {{cc-by-nc-3.0}} license, it is still well within his right to release that same image under a less restrictive license at the English Wikipedia and, by extension, the Commons. The discrepancy between licensing is easily explained by the fact that Peterson is a commercial photographer, and may not be inclined to announce on his website that he offers images under a free commercial use license on Wikipedia. ˉanetode╦╩ 23:02, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

On the contrary, it takes a leap of logic to assume that he chooses the more restrictive license when the image was uploaded under cc-by-3.0. The source website is irrelevant, the clear source and copyright holder is Christopher Peterson, as User:Christopherpeterson the contributor who entered into a legal agreement by uploading his work under a free license. Further, if we were to assume that this image was copyrighted and unlicensed, it would fail the Wikipedia criteria for claiming fair use. Of course I hope this issue will be laid to rest by Peterson himself, but until then this image should retain the {{cc-by-3.0}} license selected by the uploader. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 00:55, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, but by that logic, almost every image uploaded to Wikipedia under a free license would have to be accompanied by an OTRS ticket. Given that Peterson actually mentions contributing to Wikipedia on his website, the identity concern is moot. I appreciate your assumption of good faith and willingness to resolve this, but please keep in mind that there's a difference between due diligence and copyright paranoia. Wikipedia contributors have no right to insist to Peterson that he has to alter any content on his personal/professional website to facilitate the execution of our policies. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 16:41, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

uploading music clips

Hi there,

I see you're quite the computer expert as well as a music lover, so perhaps you can help me. I am hoping to upload a few sound clips for a biography article about my favorite violinist I've been working on (I have good fair-use rationales) but I'm a terrible klutz with sound files and I don't even know where to begin. I know files have to be in OGG format for the Wiki--do you know of any software that can convert MP3 or MP4 (iTunes format, basically) to OGG? And once I've done that, do you know how to upload a 30-second excerpt of a piece (rather than the copyright-violating entirety?) Thanks, K. Lásztocskatalk 19:29, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! I'd somehow missed that as I was prowling around in search of information. That should help set me in the right direction; I'll let you know if I run up against any problems. :) K. Lásztocskatalk 01:10, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Image:Acop.jpg and replaceability

Hi, Papa, I was looking over your decision at Image:Acop.jpg. You said "Keep: No free alternative available yet" but if I am reading policy right, isn't the standard "no free equivalent is available, or could be created"? In fact, since A Change of Pace was just recently touring, this seems quite close to unacceptable image usage example 12. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:28, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Luna3 farside.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Luna3 farside.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Save_Us_229 19:35, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Avotakka

Aregue in favour of why this magazine isn't enough notable before you delete nothing and slap warning tags the result of momentary brain farts. There isn't knowledge about that matter in English language, but it doesn't mean that the subject isn't enough notable. --Movedgood (talk) 11:14, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

The magazine, which has been published regularly from year 1967 and which has a circulation of over 80 000 copies is unquestionable enough notable. Besides, Avotakka is one of most important interior design magazines in Finland, and publisher of the magazine, A-lehdet is one of biggest publishers of magazines in Finland. They matters, which I described in the first sentence of this message was mentioned also in deleted article. I wonder if someone reads these articles before they are deleted. --Movedgood (talk) 11:47, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Saw your note

I read your comment at the template:infobox musical artist page. I appreciate the AGF you showed towards the contributions of an anon. I do, in fact, have a lengthy edit history on Wikipedia around 50000 edits... 20000+ as an account... Almost 30000 as an IP I abandoned my user account long ago after seeing a growing "anti-anon" movement and felt that this was totally opposite of what Wikipedia was all about. I decided that if it was the encyclopedia that "anyone could edit"... then an "anyone" was going to do just that. I am a librarian working at an Eastern Canadian University. When I stroll around with a laptop my IP tends to bounce around with the proxies. When I am in my office, like I am right now, my IP is static. I am a rare IP user who has an active user page( simply for storing Barnstars I have never regretted my decision to go anon and have come to embrace the "purity" of editing without an account. (although as my good Wiki-friend Admin Wiki alf says... a static IP is almost better than an account in some ways... I can definitely be found if someone wants to find me) Back to your comment on the template page. There is a strong consensus to rm the logos none of which have anything really to do with the visual cosmetics. It has to do with the fundamental Wiki foundation that "free-use always wins out over fair-use"... and there's nothing more free-use than plain text. As far as separate logo thumbnails go there is also lengthy discussion... buried within the discussion... that thet logos are certainly fair-use if they can be added into the main article content along with some sort of commentary/history as to why the logo is notable.(eliminating the belief of some users that they're all notable.... which they certainly aren't) The logo topic has been discussed before with the talk always centering around how to make them fair-use. And I know for myself I never gave them two looks as long as their was decent FUR included in the image page. When the "free-use plain text arguement" was brought to the table there was a mass 'epiphany' among veteran editors who said... y'know something... that's absolutely right. Wiki is supposed to be built on "free-content-first". It was like everyone suddenly grasping the Wiki philosophy in one big "Wow!". I hope that provides you some more background then can be dug out of the long (and sometimes) confusing logo discussion. Once again I thank you for your IP AGF and I thank you for taking the time to read this long-winded blurb. Have a nice day! 156.34.142.110 (talk) 14:42, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Excuse me there, but:

I think you're the one who deleted the image Image:Dookie.JPG, am I right? I know why you deleted it; it had no fair use rationale. At the time it was deleted, I didn't understand the policies for licenses, sources and/or fair-use rationales, but if I had I can assure you I would have solved the problem in 1-2-3. I don't know quite how to ask this, but do you suppose you could give me a second chance to do so? I mean restore the image so I may add a fair use rationale to its file, and then return the image to the article it originally occupied. Thank you! Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Shine.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Shine.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:41, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually, you may delete it again now. I merely wanted to save the image to my hard drive, then upload it as a new version of another file I had uploaded to the article. I can add in the source - I know where it came from - and licensing, and a fair use rationale there. I couldn't do this before now. Thank you for your time! I notice that you've brought this article to FAR for review. It's been there since the 5th, but - as I just noticed it - I'll be working on some of the issues you highlight over the next few days. I think I see the problems, but do you have a couple examples of the worst copy you see, so I can get the ball rolling? Thanks, UltraExactZZ Claims ~ Evidence 04:32, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I think I've caught all of the missing WP:NBSP's and endashes in the Apollo 8 article; at your convenience, and per SandyGeorgia's request, could you have a look and see if there are any other outstanding issues? We had discussed copy, and I made some changes in some areas, but I'll be happy to work on any other sections you may see that need work. Thanks again, UltraExactZZ Claims ~ Evidence 21:21, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Portrait of Ibn Al-Haithem from an old Iraqi 10000 Dinar note.

You have a deletion notice on an image in use on Scientific method, I believe incorrectly. Can you update the provenance in Wikimedia commons, it comes from an old Iraqi 10000 Dinar note. --Ancheta Wis (talk) 07:30, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
