Hi! Although a longtime enthusiastic contributor, I am currently quite disillusioned by the politics of Wikipedia. I will only continue editing at a reduced rate, and may not respond swiftly to queries. See you on the beach!! Best regard to all. Cheers! PHG (talk) 12:38, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Map of the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea.

Hello PHG, I am a Graduate Assistant for a University Professor currently working on a commentary on Revelation. He would like to secure your permission to include your PeriplusMap in the commentary. If your are willing/able to give permission, he would like to confirm your permission through email correspondence. I thought I would first contact you through this venue, however. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.--Kanethelar (talk) 19:24, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be delighted if you use the map. Please contact me by e-mail if you wish through the "E-mail this user" tag on the left. Cheers Phg (talk) 19:40, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey PHG, I am a photo researcher and wanted to know if I could use your photo of the painting of Pope Nicholas III towards a History Channel 2hr special on "Angels and Demons". If you are ok with this, I would need to send you a release form via email granting The History Channel permission to use this image. Let me know when you can since I have very little time to retrieve these images. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon. (Tparkford (talk) 23:41, 25 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Hi Tparkford. I'm glad you like the image. I have just changed the status of image File:PopeNicholasIIICameo.jpg to "Public Domain" so that you can use it without any procedure. Regards PHG (talk) 06:01, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I updated the photo of the Map of Tunis by Piri Reis with a higher quality image taken by the Walters Art Museum. Regards User:Jeccabreen —Preceding undated comment added 16:48, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Essays

[edit]

Your essays are interesting. I would like to add some remarks to "CONTENT : A SECOND BREATH FOR WIKIPEDIA?". You claim that "Referenced information should never be deleted from the encyclopedia". You must understand that there are some problems with this:

  1. There is a limit to what a person can read in terms of quantity.
  2. Even if I would agree with the principle it also depends very much on how this information is written down. If one swamps an article with fringe theory A references and ignores fringe theory B, C and D references and theories, then this is a problem isn't it?

--FocalPoint (talk) 16:33, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Focal Point. Thank you for your comment. This is the beauty of being a paperless encyclopedia... I don't think that there would be any issue with having a 150k main article on Philip IV (against today's stumpy 20k), highlighting in great details so many of the specifics of that king (his coinage policy, his impopularity, his role in the arrest Boniface at Anagni, his handling of the Templar affair, his various failed plans for the Crusades, his interactions with the Mongols, his handling of the Tour de Nesle Affair etc...) each in exquisite detail, and showing the various historical theories about his rule. All of that information is legitimate, and it would be up to the reader to read what he wants, or choose which theory he would like to favour. If a writer is especially knowledgeable of theory A and contributes essentially about it, then so be it, until another knowledgeable editor contributes about theory B, C, or D. There is no real reason to delete referenced material for "undue weight", or attack a user because he is particularly knowledgeable about a specific area and not about another, because universal knowledge is a combination of individual outgrowths, and the growth process is by necessity unbalanced. Cheers PHG (talk) 18:13, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion does not have to be better or worse than yours, but I could accept part of your arguments as follows:

An article has to cater the needs of most: The 10-line only needs, the 20k needs and the 150k and the 1500k needs.

    • Looking at Philip IV, the 10-line reader needs are not met with this inadequate introduction.
    • The 20k needs are met
    • The 150k - 1500k needs are met where there is a link to another, more detailed article (it does not have to be all in one huge article)

BUT....

when a marginal theory A is mentioned, as supported by CrazyScientist1, 2 and 3, it has to be noted as such, with due weight, so that people know that there are also Even-More-Marginal Theory B (references by Even-CrazierScientist1 - yes someone else will write this article) and of course, the MainStreamTheory, which should be clearly noted as such.--FocalPoint (talk) 19:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Focal Point. I agree about the need to present the various theories as such. Regarding the relations with the Mongols, a large amount of important referenced information about the specifics of the exchanges with Philip IV was simply deleted [1], and now cannot be found anywhere else on Wikipedia, which I guess is contradictory with the objective of this encyclopedia to be the sum of all knowledge. The information was just deleted, without even trying to transfer it to a more detailed article. PHG (talk) 21:00, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The inclusionist/deletionist debate misses a central point: the encyclopedic project is properly about the organization of knowledge. A complete encyclopedia should be, indeed, complete as PHG has suggested (reliably sourced information shouldn't be excluded) but that doesn't mean that a specific article should include all possible reliably sourced information, but rather that information in the encyclopedia should be organized into a hierarchy of knowledge, so that one may approach a subject in whatever detail the reader finds appropriate. This means that articles would branch off into ever-more-detailed articles; plus, some level of detail can be left to external links that point to specialized documents maintained elsewhere.
Practically speaking, when a particular article begins to become overwhelmed with detail, subarticles should be created with appropriate detail, brought back into the original, overall subject article, using summary style. Often this is resisted as creating POV forks, but, in fact, there is nothing about such a process that, in itself, creates POV-biased forks. If Wikipedia is to be the "sum of all human knowledge," as it is advertised to be and was intended to be, it should be complete, and this requires categorization of knowledge into articles of appropriate size, linked to each other for easy approach.
Political process on Wikipedia is, to some degree, preventing the realization of the vision. To fix this, if it is even possible, may take quite some time. --Abd (talk) 00:04, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of A. K. Narain

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article A. K. Narain, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

person doesn't seem notable yet

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. documenting Eusebia

[edit]

Hi. I realize that you've stepped away from WP for a while, but if you come back... I would love some help tracking down citations for the article you started on Eusebeia. Your original version of the article includes a nice synopsis of the use of the word over time in the Greek world, but I've not been able to find much on the word. If you have a chance, I would greatly appreciate it if you'd point me in the right direction to find some citations.

Sigtrygg Silkbeard

[edit]

Hi PHG. I noticed you uploaded images of some coins from the reign Sigtrygg Silkbeard, and wondered if you might be able to clear up an issue I have with the article — namely, differing accounts on the dates of his reign. I have outlined the problem here. Did the coins at the British Museum give the dates of his reign, perchance?

Thanks for any assistance. --Grimhelm (talk) 00:56, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would you happen to have any photo of a coin with Phthia of Epirus? In the article it is claimed that her son produced coins with her portrait. I want to make a present to a friend, and a picture of this coin would be just fine (what a nice place wikipedia, a picture of the coin is enough!).--FocalPoint (talk) 20:25, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do not worry - I just checked Pyrrhus of Epirus and there it was!--FocalPoint (talk) 20:26, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PHG, just to let you know I've proposed this article (which I believe you created in January 2008) for deletion, since it refers to the same wall as Great Wall of Gorgan, which is a more substantial article and also has the benefit of more recent archaeological work on the dating of the wall (which, among other things, shows that the wall wasn't constructed until about 800 years after Alexander -- see http://www.archaeology.co.uk/world-news/the-enigma-of-the-red-snake.htm for detaiils). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathandore (talkcontribs) 17:21, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PHG. I've been working recently on the article and since you've contributed an image to it recently I would like you to have a look at it if you got some time. Your Point About the Sad State of Wikipedia Politics

[edit]

Hi PHG:

In February, I became a Wikipedia editor. As an educator, I had the best of intentions and immediately got busy, adding things I knew mattered to teachers in the States (where most of our schools do NOT allow students to directly cite to Wikipedia but encourage its use as a starting point). I was immediately pounced on, threatened to be black-listed, and on it went. (Apparently getting busy means spamming to Wiki administrators.)

Some good soul (and fair-minded thinker/administrator) tried to step in to stop the "guilty-until-proven-innocent" madness, but my enthusiasm was directly deflated by the attacks. It was ugly - and for absolutely no reason.

It wouldn't occur to me to help edit Wikipedia, ever again. I have shared this with many other educators - and they aren't going to waste their time anymore than I will waste mine. I'm only signed-in now, to write this to you. I was looking for a great picture of Pope Adrian IV, to use for my class, and there you were.

I really hope things improve, else Wikipedia will fail to live-up to its potential. Regrettably, I'm not optimistic.

I read your comments regarding truth and freedom of speech v. consensus and I agree with you. The problem is that the US government is now setting up local commissions for talk radio that would also extend to cable and satellite television, even the Internet as part of the Fairness Doctrine which is nothing more than censorship. I fear for this country and that it seems like we are heading down the path of Lenin, Stalin, Chavez, and Mao. Chris (talk) 14:11, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PHG

I'm writing a book on the general Stilicho and need relevant photos for a black and white 'plates' section. Would it be possible to use your photo of the 'Christian Pendant of Maria, wife of the Roman emperor Honorius (398-407)' please? As you probably know, she was Stilicho's daughter and, thanks to that fact, the photo would be invaluable. If yes, what terms and conditions you would apply?

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Tonkin Medal

[edit]

Dear PHG,

Very glad to see you're back! Loved your Tonkin medal stuff, so I have created a new article, Tonkin commemorative medal and moved your image and some stuff I did earlier (in the article Tonkin campaign) there. I'm going to add a lot more material on the controversy surrounding the issue of the medal (how many recipients, why was Lang Son omitted, and so on), so watch this space.

Djwilms (talk) 02:11, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PHG,
Thanks very much for the French Barnstar of National Merit. The most welcome honour yet, and it does look rather good with its tricolour.
I'm still in the process of translating Huard on the history of campaign medals. I think the Tonkin one may well have been the first medal handed out to all the participants in a campaign, as you suggest. I'll add in to the article anything interesting I find.
I think you're right about the Crimea, as Huard says 'The first commemorative medal had some purpose to it. It was given to our soldiers by the Queen of England, who wished to recognise the services they had rendered to her army (which they had saved on at least two occasions).' Cheek of the man! Presumably he is referring to the Battle of the Alma and the Battle of Inkerman, and he possibly had the charge of the chasseurs d'Afrique at Balaclava in mind as well.
Djwilms (talk) 06:59, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've just seen your additions to the Tonkin commemorative medal article. Fascinating stuff on Cau-Giai. I shall try to find out whether the name was deleted from the original list because it was a French defeat, or whether it was added to the original list because someone felt that at least one of Riviere's battles needed to be commemorated. It might have been either. If you make any more interesting discoveries like this, I shall soon be in a position to write a very informative paragraph on the medal in the closing chapter of my book!
Djwilms (talk) 06:25, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Some very nice additions, thanks very much. I've tidied up the article and reorganised the order of presentation. I hadn't realised that eligibility was extended backwards to 1873 and forwards to the end of the Pacification of Tonkin. Interesting.

Thanks for the comments. Would you have a better image for the pump in Talk:Taccola? Cheers Phg (talk) 11:41, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is folio f.004r of De Ingeneis, and your information is not entirely correct. The chain pump as such is actually known since antiquity, only a certain new type which works with soft balls instead if wooden plates is attributed to the Tatars by Taccola. But I would upload the pic only together with all the rest (58), which however requires a lot of time, since each has to be named correctly. I have not much time now and therefore it is only worth doing if the article is simultaneously enlarged substantially, perhaps to Good article status. As I said, I have still some literature from the time I wrote the article which can take you quite far. Gun Powder Ma (talk) 12:01, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting, we seem to have at present the same research interest. I recently created Pumhart von Steyr, Dulle Griet, Faule Mette, Faule Grete, Grose Bochse and Supergun (see also Mons Meg). A question about Taranis Jupiter

[edit]

Thank you for sharing all these amazing photos, I am particularly fond of the once from Gandhara. However, my question is about the Taranis Jupiter photo from Musee d'Archeologie Nationale. Did you study what this statue is wearing over his shoulder? My suggestion is that it is some kind of rattle, however I cannot tell because it is partly hidden. Hi there,

My friend Rene Vienet has just sent me a nice little piece on the medal from the cover of a schoolboy's notebook, which I have added to this page. You might be interested. I guess from the style that it's c.1895 (it must be later than 1893, see the final sentence on the left-hand page).

Randier's La Royale has just arrived, courtesy of amazon.fr. What a magnificent volume! Now I can see where you got some of your images. I particularly liked the photo of the French marine infantry officer in Tonkin being carried in state in a hammock to meet some mandarin or other. The mode of transport looked decidedly uncomfortable.

Maps of Nestorian Dioceses

[edit]
Voyages of Rabban Bar Sauma.

Hi, PHG,

I see you were the author of that neat map showing the travels of the Ongut monk Bar Sauma in the last two decades of the thirteenth century.

I have just decided to leave the Sino-French War alone for a bit and upload onto Wikipedia about 400 pages of stuff on the Nestorians that's been on my computer for more than a decade . See my new article, Dioceses of the Church of the East. This is stuff that is going eventually to go into my second book on the Nestorians, The Ecclesiastical Organisation of the Church of the East to 1318 (the first one went from 1318 onwards), but in the meantime I've decided to share it with the world, or at least that part of the world that consults English Wikipedia.

You will see at a glance that what it needs is maps, and my thoughts immediately turned to you, as master map-maker to the gentry. Most existing maps of Nestorian dioceses are incomplete, inaccurate or both. I did a PhD thesis on this subject, and happen to know where they all were. I would therefore love to put some authoritative maps of the diocesan structure on Wikipedia. How do we do it? Do I have to give you long and precise 'target indications', as I once did with the map for the Sino-French War, so that we both waste a lot of time, or is there an easy way for me to edit a map created by you? Not that time is a problem. This project is going to involve about 120 articles and the next five years of my life, so we can sort things out gradually.

For starters, would it be possible for you to amend that Bar Sauma map to get rid of his travel itinerary and the current title, leaving in the place names and the physical relief, and re-title the map 'The Mission Field of the Church of the East, 1281'. I will then consider where to go from there.

Looking forward to working with you on this project. If it works it will move WikiProject Assyria away from being simply a platform for Assyrian nationalists, which is what it seems to be at present.

Djwilms (talk) 06:50, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PHG, Go have a look at the map I've just uploaded into my article Dioceses of the Church of the East. I've been experimenting, without much success, to get good quality reproduction of the Powerpoint map I did. I've found that saving in JPEG format loses quality (perhaps I'm doing it the wrong way). I've tried uploading a pdf version (edit my image by replacing jpg with pdf and you'll find a much better version of the map, also uploaded to Wikipedia. The only problem is that I can't make it appear on my page. Don't know why; I'm sure it's something incredibly simple. Can you help? Djwilms (talk) 04:00, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I think that makes sense. When I have a moment, I'll give it a try and see what happens. Djwilms (talk) 04:10, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for template

[edit]

Hi PHG. Can I trouble you to make me a template for 'Dioceses of the Church of the East'? I'm beginning to split the main article up.

The title should be Dioceses of the Church of the East.

Then, Time Periods. Two so far (I'll add others later): Dioceses of the Church of the East to 1318, and Dioceses of the Church of the East, 1318–1552.

Then, Metropolitan Provinces. Just stick one in, Adiabene.

Then, Dioceses. Just stick one in, Berwari.

I should be able to copy and paste to do similar templates for provinces and their constituent dioceses. It's just getting a template started that baffles me. Hope you don't mind.

French overtures to Japan, 1883-5

[edit]

Hi PHG,

Thanks for that interesting stuff you have dug out on French attempts to cosy up to Japan against China before and during the Sino-French War. I'm going to search Albert Billot's L'affaire du Tonkin, the standard French diplomatic history of the Sino-French War, to see if he can add anything to your research.

What I would like to do eventually is merge your new section into the existing section 'China's fear of Japan', and probably cut it down a bit. At the end of the day, France and Japan did not become allies, and I think it unbalances the main article to devote so much space to something that never happened. On the other hand, I've long been wanting to create a new article, Diplomacy of the Sino-French War, and that would be the natural home for a discussion of French overtures to Japan. I'll try to get round to it before long.

I'll get back to you after I've seen what Billot has to say on the subject.

Djwilms (talk) 01:33, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Nice photo you uploaded of French soldiers in Tonkin in 1888.

P.P.S Can you spare a couple of minutes to do me another 'dioceses' template, 'Dioceses of the Syrian Orthodox Church'? Just change the title from the present 'Dioceses of the Church of the East template and scrap the illustrations, and I'll do the rest. I know how to edit existing templates but I haven't yet worked out how to create new ones.

100 thank you's PHG

Greeks in pre-Roman Gaul

[edit]

Thanks. I've made some amendments, mostly minor and stylistic, but you may have views on them. Personally I thought the map was overdominant and confusing - it only showed modern political boundaries which obviously didn't exist at the time, and in my view it didn't add much and distracted from your excellent text and the other images. On consistency, I've changed the refs to the Greek settlement to Massalia, rather than (modern) Marseilles or (Roman) Massilia. But I think the article as a whole is great, thanks. Ghmyrtle (talk) 07:47, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for providing the new map - the only problem is that it seems to show the Roman provincial boundaries several hundred years later than is covered by the text of the article, and Massilia rather than Massalia. Not sure which is the better map really. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:09, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so very much for the "Book writer's Barnstar". I am truly honoured - especially as it comes from you - one of the true giants and heros of the Wikipedia! What a welcome and wonderful surprise to find on my Talk page!

I am so excited to have the book out in print after all these (30) years - I can hardly believe it has happened. It is already listed on www.Alibris.com but I expect it will be on Amazon.com sometime next week (and they usually have cheaper shipping rates). The retail price is US$ 39.99. I cannot afford to send a free copy to every one of my many friends, contributors and helpers - as I would wish. But, if it would be very difficult for you to buy a copy - first try to get your local library to purchase it and, failing that, let me know and I will arrange a copy to be sent to you.

May I take this opportunity of thanking you once again for your innumerable superb contributions to the common pool of knowledge that is the Wikipedia. You are truly a great inspiration to us all. All my very best wishes, John Hill (talk) 16:21, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, p. 928- and following pages. Would there be a better way to express this? Best regards PHG Per Honor et Gloria 07:46, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dissolution of the monasteries

[edit]
Alterpiece fragments (late 1300- early 1400) destroyed during the English Dissolution of the Monasteries, mid-16th century.

Good work finding those altarpiece fragments. But they might be improved with better labling of thier origin; are you sure they are from a monastic altarpieces, rather than a parochial one? If they were parochial, they might be more appropriately placed on the English Reformation page. TomHennell (talk) 18:28, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good question! I double-checked the Museum of London notice: the fragments are not specifically described as monastic or parochial, but the attached notice specifically explains the destructions of carvings during the "Dissolution", of which these fragments are shown as an example. The fragments are also part of an exhibit about the "Dissolution" proper, in which the introduction mentions the destruction of "religious houses". I guess this properly clarifies that the fragment should be under the "Dissolution" article. Thanks for asking! Best regards PHG Per Honor et Gloria 20:51, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed; if the Museum of London is classifying them that way; then it is not the function of Wikipedia to second guess them. And I suppose they may well have come from archeological excavations in one of the London Houses. That said, Henry's orders to his commissioners led to their destroying shrines and allegedly "abused images" of saints. Henry had no objection to altars as such, nor to the standard iconography of images of the passion; moreover moveable carved panels, like stained glass, might be expected to have had a ready resale market in parish churches. But then in London there may have been more sympathy for Reformed ideals; and hence perhaps a greater degree of wanton destruction. TomHennell (talk) 01:35, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dieppe Maps -Guillaume Brouscon Map and other additions

[edit]

Hi PHG. I don't have a problem with using Guillaume Brouscon's map at the top - but it is a pity it's such a poor resolution image! Is there any chance of a better copy? I really like the idea of whole Dieppe maps being profiled at the start, rather than just showing the Jave La Grande bit continually! If there isnt a better Brouscon image, why not keep the Vallard at the head and use Brouscon further on? But I am not in favour of the enlarged sailing ship image from the Vallard - I cannot see what purpose this serves. Cheers--Nickm57 (talk) 07:57, 13 November 2009 (UTC) (Had written this on the talk page but I think you havent seen it)[reply]

Thanks again

[edit]

Thanks again for your kind comments about my book. I hope you find much of interest in it - but please do let me know if you have any criticisms, suggestions, comments, etc. BTW, You have got the "collectors' edition" of the book :^).

After about 50 copies of the book were sold someone noticed that the second Chinese character on the front cover (the second one down in the line at the far right of the box of Chinese text). The character han in the title, Hou Hanshu, had been changed to a very similar-looking character mo. I could not believe it, I was SO upset, but immediately emailed the publishers and asked them to halt production (luckily it is a print-on-demand setup so here weren't hundreds of thousands of books already published and having to be trashed).

Anyway, while trying to fix the cover file I discovered what had happened - I had clipped the text from a WORD document and inserted it into a pdf file and the computer changed the character to a similar-looking but totally wrong one - it happened again while I was trying to repair the file. Well, at least I felt slightly mollified - although I should have checked the text again - I had no idea the computer would substitute one character for another when I was doing a relatively straightforward cut and paste job.

So, it won't be printed again until I O.K. another proof of the book (which should be in the mail to me now). In the meantime Amazon.com is still taking orders and, if all goes well, the book should be back in production by the end next week.

I hope having the wrong character on the cover will not bother you too much - but, if it does, please let me know.

Cheers and all best wishes, John Hill (talk) 11:12, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. I love the banknote and corresponding plate at Talk:Yuan Dynasty! It's an excellent image. Although Economy of the Song Dynasty has two images showing banknotes, the article for Song Dynasty actually has no currency image at the moment. The only Chinese dynasty article which now doesn't require a currency picture is Han Dynasty, while Economy of the Han Dynasty has an abundance of coin pictures. In any case, thanks for sharing these! They are a wonderful addition to several important Chinese history articles. Cheers.--Pericles of AthensTalk 16:46, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you just do me a quick skeleton, without the Catholic imagery, with the same row headings, and with the title Patriarchs of the Church of the East? I'll edit it and take it from there. Cheers.

Thanks a lot, PHG, the template will help me enormously in bringing some sort of order to this subject. I'm supposed to be writing a book on the Nestorians with an October deadline, but I'm spending a lot of my time sorting out the Wikipedia articles on the Nestorian patriarchs. Hopefully, both will get done. The book on the Sino-French War has been temporarily put on hold till I get the Nestorian book out of the way, and I shall then return to the charge with the promised article on Sino-French War diplomacy.

Everything is Ok except a request by another member that I have to provide citation for this part. Maurya image

[edit]

I hope you are well!

I recently looked at the Maurya Empire page and noticed that the punchmarked coin used as an illustration is an example of Gupta-Hardaker 450, which they assign to the (pre-Maurya) Nanda period of Magadha. Of course we don't know for sure if this is correct and the coin may be a Maurya issue, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to use a coin that the most used reference does assign to the Mauryas? If you agree, and wish to replace the image, please feel free to download any image you prefer from the Maurya page at coinindia.com. Or, if you prefer, I could do so and write a small section on the Mauryan punch-marked coinage and add to the article.

Warm regards, CoinIndia (talk) 08:15, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was just reading Ottoman invasion of the Balearic islands (1558) (good article by the way) and was wondering if there was any reason why the "(1558)" is needed in the title. Dear PHG: Thank you so very much for promptly coming to my defence over the question of the acceptibility of my book as a reference. And you were able to add in several references that I don't have handy here on my little netbook travelling computer. I really do appreciate your support.

Dear PHG, I was reviewing the Nahapana page and was wondering how you arrived at the date 119 for the start of his rule. The date of 124 for the end of his rule comes from Rapson, but this is almost certainly incorrect as it is based on the assumption that the dated inscriptions in Nahapana's name are in the Vikram era of the year 78. Since the last known inscription of Nahapana is dated 46, that would place him in the year 124 CE. But his reign was a lot longer than 5 years so I am puzzled how you got 119 for the start of his reign.

If its OK by you, I will make some edits to the page to add some more recent thinking about his dates (other than Senior's). I suspect his reign was entirely in the first century ... Jha and Rajgor place it c. 45-95, and I wonder if it might not even be earlier. Nobody has yet adequately explained how and where Nahapana and Chastana were ruling simultaneously.

Indo-Greek kings

[edit]

I know you're interested in these guys. Well, I just moved a few around in order to get a more consistent nomenclature. I move the two kings who were disambiguated as "(Indo-Greek king)" and I moved all the kings who (contra the MOS) were titled "King X". I was hoping you'd take a look and make sure nothing looks odd. I did have to make a choice to prefer the Latinisation "Anicetus" over "Aniketos" because "Philoxenus" is Latinised. Srnec (talk) 06:41, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kujula Kadphises

[edit]

Hi again! Good to see you doing some edits on the Kujula Kadphises article! I think the article badly needs a facelift. I have just taken the liberty of exchanging some (unfootnoted) quotes from the Hou Hanshu which were based on my earlier draft translation which was on the Silk Road Seattle website, with more up-to-date ones from my book. Now, I have been asked by administrators not to use my own book without discussing it first with others - and maybe asking others to do any editing or quotes using it. So, I wonder if you would take a look at what I have done and, if you have any problems or queries, leave a note on the Talk page, please?

Also, I do think we should have a quote from the Rabatak inscription - preferably from one of Sims-Williams recent versions - particularly the section showing that Kanishka was descended from Kujula. Do you agree? If so, would you do it if you have the ime? If not I will try to get to it as soon as I can but I am a bit overwhelmed with personal matters at the moment. [edit]

Per Honor et Gloria - I am copying this piece (below) into your personal Talk-File because it does not look as if people visit the Periplus ... Talk-File all that often. Regards, David McNaughton; E-mail: DLMcN@yahoo.com

- . - . - . -

Could Rhapta have been in modern-day Mozambique?

Does anyone have access to a copy of the "Periplus"? - either in the original Greek or in translation?

Carl Peters implies that it states that Rhapta lay, not at the mouth of its river, but some distance upstream, adding that this requirement would fit Quelimane quite well. But is he quoting the "Periplus" correctly?

Incidentally, remembering the successful Phoenician circumnavigation of Africa in 600 BC, it is by no means impossible that subsequent travellers would have ventured as far as the mouth of the Zambesi (or even beyond) - at the time when the "Periplus" was being compiled. I used to work in the Zimbabwean Meteorological Office, and can confirm that alternations in the coastal wind pattern did facilitate two-way journeys there.

This is a note to let the main editors of Franco-Mongol alliance know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 26, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 26, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Franco-Mongol relations were established in the 13th century, as Christian Crusaders and the Mongol Empire unsuccessfully tried to form an alliance against the Muslims, their common enemy. Contact between Europeans and Mongols began around 1220, and tended to follow a pattern: the Europeans asked the Mongols to convert to Christianity, while the Mongols (who had already conquered many Christian and Muslim nations in their advance across Asia) demanded submission and tribute. European attitudes began to change in the mid-1260s, from perceiving the Mongols as enemies to be feared, to potential allies against the Muslims. The Mongols sought to capitalize on this, promising a re-conquered Jerusalem to the Europeans in return for cooperation. Attempts to cement an alliance continued through negotiations, without success. The Mongols invaded Syria several times between 1281 and 1312, sometimes in attempts at joint operations with Crusader forces, but the forces never coordinated meaningfully because of logistical difficulties. The Mongol Empire eventually dissolved into civil war, and the Crusaders lost control of Palestine and Syria to the Egyptian Mamluks. (Full article...)

Your View Would Be Appreciated On Article Up For Deletion

[edit]

Hi, I am brand new editor to wiki so please excuse any etiquette misdemenors with myself writing here and this request. I have come across yourself and wondered if you would give an independent view (or point me to someone you think would be better placed) on an article up for deletion in line with wiki policy, which looking at your profile, you obviously have very significant experience and history with wiki have some greater independent knowledge on the specific subject matter, namely you say are into running/fitness and are ex military. The article is Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Rob_Edmond I have been tagged as a result of my interaction on the discussion as a sockpuppet but with no justification given? I refute this and a proper investigation will show this but as I am new to wikipedia, I get the feeling that I am not welcome to air my views even though I have been courteous and factual in them and abided by wiki policy. regards Acbingham (talk) 16:00, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More on Hellenistic partitions template

[edit]

I can understand how you feel about WP politics as I went through something like that myself. However, the politics are not WP's (for the most part). These people out there are determined to wreck or control everything. First they appeared as vandals. Then they got a little smarter. They threw in large numbers of stubs to get themselves made administrator. From that position they did quite a lot of damage. I followed one of them as an example. He had his own website with stated mission to remove all the falsity from the Internet (can you imagine? Another Hitler). He railed against WP as the worst offender. Suddenly he was not only in WP he was an administrator, and as such, he went around wrecking articles and driving editors off. I quit for over a year. But, the fact is, WP did not die, it kept getting bigger and better. The articles were still out there for better or for worse depending on what the public does with it. So I got back on. I find they seem to have much better control over the articles. I have not heard a word from my old enemies. Of course, I have more experience now also. I'm just relating my experience here for whatever it is worth. It does take a lot of time. Nothing stays the same, you know?

Now, when you removed yourself you left some unfinished business, one of which is the "Hellenistic Partitions" template and associated articles. It is only used twice, but then it is a specialized subject. I like it. It was copied and enhanced on the Greek WP. I got no plans to enhance it but I would like to continue its use. There are, however, some mysterious symbols in it, which I cannot seem to figure out; to wit, the * and the +. What were those for? As of this moment unless I can learn from you or from somewhere what they are intended to convey, I am going to take them out as an unnecessary complication. I understand the table, I don't understand your notation. They look like weird science. I will give you a few days (only) to reply. Later of course we could always put them back in if warranted.

I got to go now. I can appreciate your feelings. To me it is a matter of how much time one has. You can see the thing grow over the years. Sooner or later all the jerks get weeded out. Your time is your decision however. Best of luck.Botteville (talk) 15:03, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File:EucratidesCoin.jpg needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:EucratidesCoin.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

Replaceable non-free use File:YugaPurana.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:YugaPurana.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 廣九直通車 (talk) 08:26, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
