[edit]

Dear Ollie/Archive 1: Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:

Don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! Just in case you are not perfect, click here to see how you can avoid making common mistakes.

Kingston upon Hull

[edit]

Hi Ollie, a great effort on changing this and bringing into line with other articles. It needed doing!

Keith D 10:21, 10 November 2006 (UTC) (A 1975 graduate of Nottingham)[reply]

Hi. I replaced you message because it's generally considered best not to arbitrarily bite the heads off of newcomers, even when we're "sure" they're full of it. Being nice halps dissuade any angry retorts from them, getting them banned without giving them the opportunity to catch on to what we're about. - Hope you don't mind! - CobaltBlueTony 03:29, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, cool, you're right. I just banged in the suggested message off the template. It's easy to get a bit carried away sometimes! Ollie 03:31, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Better template

[edit]

Hi Ollie! I was just doing some recent changes patrol and noticed your warning of a user who had posted an innapropriate article with {{test}}. I thought I might suggest a more tailored set of template for such situations: {{test1article}} created specifically for warning about innapropriate articles (and like many templates, there's {{test2article}} and higher for escalating warnings). If the article had been less nonsense, and more of a simple bio, {{vanity}} or {{nn-warn}} would have also fit the bill. Oh, and we need more new pages patrollers so keep up the great work! Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit 15:15, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent, thanks for that information! They strike a good balance between not biting heads off (see above!) and getting the point across. Ollie 15:32, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome.--Fuhghettaboutit 15:42, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

S'okay. I took the liberty of reverting all that unencyclopedic nonsense. If my understanding of WP:3RR is accurate, reverting obviously unencyclopedic material is acceptable, but they do encourage a rewrite to conform to WP:NPOV instead of reverting constantly. - CobaltBlueTony 17:42, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I tried a bit of a rewrite, but there wasn't a lot to work with. Anyhow, thanks for reverting the vandalism on my user page, and thanks for weighing in on the article! Ollie 17:46, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder

[edit]

Thanks for the reminder about {{test-self}} regarding User talk:Cavsluver013. I added the {{test2} before I had noticed that my revert had failed because they had reverted it themselves, and totally forgot to remove it or change it to {{test-self}}. I'll be more alert in the future. —Krellis 00:58, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eek, sorry, I'm in a not-paying-enough-attention mode today, and didn't read your notice that you'd prefer replies on the talk page where the conversation originated. Sorry about that, consider my face officially red. —Krellis 01:05, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Health Wiki Research

[edit]

A colleague and I are conducting a study on health wikis. We are looking at how wikis co-construct health information and create communities. We noticed that you are a frequent contributor to Wikipedia on health topics.

Please consider taking our survey here.

This research will help wikipedia and other wikis understand how health information is co-created and used.

We are from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The project was approved by our university research committee and members of the Wikipedia Foundation.

Thanks, --Sharlene Thompson 18:22, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've never contributed much to health topics, other than to revert vandalism, so I don't think I can be a lot of help to you. Ollie 18:30, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Varnas and Shudra Concept

[edit]

Please don't misunderstand. There is nothing insulting to call any Hindu a shudra. Understand Varnashrama dharma in a present situation. Also read ShivDharma concept in Maharashtr. If Maratha feel insuting to be called as Shudra then you can convert to other religion. Being lower-cast to Brahmins is Dharma for every Hindu. Shudra123 16:03, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I misunderstood or was offended. I reverted because I thought that the opening of the article should define the widely understood definition of Hindu, i.e. a person who follows hinduism. You could perhaps elaborate on the concepts you mention within the article itself. Ollie 17:28, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weetabix playing football

[edit]

I saw your edit to Theo Walcott ([1]). Whilst I believe that Theo Walcott is not a Weetabix, I feel I must point out that a Weetabix advert once showed archive footage of a Weetabix playing football for England in the 1986 World Cup! It showed that in an attempt to clear Maradona's handball shot, he lost his boot and failed to prevent the goal.

I am unsure which member of the "Weetabix Crew" this was (but I think it was Brian) and because of his failure to clear the ball, I am also uncertain as to whether Weetabixes can or cannot play football. Hope this is at least of some use to you.  sʟυмɢυм • т  c  23:48, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'll stand corrected on that one then! :D Ollie 00:53, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Way to Remember

[edit]

I saw your vote for the user warnings. Just so you know, an easy way to remember which ones auto sign are that templates beginning with "uw-" auto sign, and templates not beginning with that do not. --TeckWizTalk Contribs@ 21:08, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good point! I'll make a mental note, thanks. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 21:10, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Sorry about the Jim Davidson thing. It was stupid, immature, & not the thing Wiki should have on it. But true, you gotta admit. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BenMTOS (talkcontribs) 21:27, 23 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Vandalism warning

[edit]

I think you're mistaken. I'm normally very careful about levels of warning, but please do see this ([2]) and this ([3]) We can issue 4 warnings on each sock if you like, but that's a heck of a lot of warnings. --Dweller 14:59, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand! I warned User:StuartRupertClark for his changes to Stuart Clark, and then edited myself to increase the warning level - the one I chose wasn't appropriate, I thought. Beyond that, I don't have a clue what you're talking about. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 15:41, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I think I get it now. I was incrementing my own warning, not yours. Sorry if that's created confusion. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 15:42, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that'd be it. Excuse me. It's me that misunderstood. Sorry to have bothered you and thanks for your vandal fighting. --Dweller 15:43, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem, these confusions happen all the time! →Ollie (talkcontribs) 19:16, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I placed the Username template in the multi-level section because it looks as though there'sll be at least one more level (when users are warned that a discussion has resulted in their Username being disallowed). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, no, not at all. It's good that you are willing to put plenty of work into improving the article. You can't be blamed for voicing your opinion on the talk page - thats what it is there for after all! →Ollie (talkcontribs) 11:34, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tech.co.uk

[edit]

Hi Ollie - I am indeed the Dan Grabham who worked for PCFormat. I believed the minor edits I made to this article shouldn't be too much of a problem for WP:COI as they were largely error checking but of course I accept you pointing it out to me. I have no knowledge of the users who originally made this article- they could, of course, be others in the company. indeed, it's existence somewhat surprised me a few days ago. I'm not surprised it's a candidate for deletion as we are still in Beta, but I would point out that the site will replace many others referenced on Wikipedia and will (hopefully) be noteworthy in a relatively short space of time. Danielgrabham 12:21, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I made pretty much the same points over at the [[|Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tech.co.uk|deletion discussion]]. As I said over there, the article may as well stay and be improved, since it is only likely to be added again in a few months time. Just have to wait and see what the community decides, I guess. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 13:33, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you saw the message on WT:CRIC, had this page on your watchlist or just came along by chance, but your efforts are much appreciated. User:The Rambling Man and I are trying to get this up to GA or FA as fast as possible, so we can get it ready for the World Cup. If we do it fast enough, we'll pick another similar article. Anyway, thanks for the big contributions... delighted if you stick with us. --Dweller 19:58, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all - I'll try and contribute as much as I can. (The first two apply, btw!) →Ollie (talkcontribs) 20:07, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Templates and all that

[edit]

Hey, great work on the templates. It actually makes them a valuable addition to the page. The other thing to look out for is additional whitespace either before or afterward the content which means the templates don't abut properly. But great work. It's probably worth adding a note to WP:CRIC to say that templates ...should be 80% width... to retain the consistency... Cheers! The Rambling Man 18:55, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with it too, they don't make the articles look as 'cluttered'. Some of the templates had a random
in the top, just to confuse the spacings further, but I think I've got them all now. →Ollie (talkcontribs) 21:35, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Collingwood graphs

[edit]

I could certainly do that. In fact I am doing that, right now. They don't take all that long, especially for a relatively recent player like Collingwood, so I should be able to upload them pretty soon. I must say the idea of having several of my graphs on a Featured Article is one that I like! Raven4x4x 22:57, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And they are done! Image:Paul Collingwood ODI Graph.png and Image:Paul Collingwood Graph.png. I haven't placed them in the article yet, but I've left a note at [[4]]. Raven4x4x 23:44, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your help with this article. Your contributions were particularly valuable, coming at a time when my ability to contribute was severely diminished. --Dweller 13:31, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
