"Minor" edits

[edit]

Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you.   Will Beback  talk  01:47, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited Eckankar, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Chela and Darshan Singh (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Speedy deletion nomination of Chart of English animal nouns

[edit]

Hello Oliver Puertogallera,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Chart of English animal nouns for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, List of animal names.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, Ratzd'mishukribo (talk) 15:38, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Chart of English animal nouns

[edit]

Hi, I'm Ratzd'mishukribo. Oliver Puertogallera, thanks for creating Chart of English animal nouns!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. A page already exists for this subject: List of animal names

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Hello Oliver, I kind of like your chart, and it does have a lot of additional info compared to the pre-existing article List of animal names. Could you let us know where you found all the info in your list? Was it mostly from one source or did you compile it all yourself? It would be good to give it a reference or two if possible. Invertzoo (talk) 21:48, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Oliver and thanks for your nice note on my talk page. You managed to leave the note just fine, except that it is good to have a heading on a brand new note about a different subject than the previous one. You can leave a heading the next time you start a new note by simply putting two equal signs at the beginning and end of the words that you want to use as the heading. If you do that, after you save, it comes out as a proper heading with a line underneath it to make it clearer and a nice little "edit" button above the end of that line. That's all automatic, like the signing of your name from putting four tildes, which you did perfectly.

And yes, there is a huge amount to learn when you start on Wikipedia; it can be overwhelming. However, I would be glad to help explain things to you if you like, so just ask me. I should explain that in general we recommend that new editors start out by making many relatively small edits on pre-existing articles, which is not too hard to do, and then gradually over the course of many weeks or months new editors can work their way up to creating new articles from scratch, which of course is harder to do. Once an editor is ready to tackle creating a new article, we have something called the "Article Wizard"] which is extremely helpful, because it guides you step by step through the whole process, so you get everything pretty much correct. Talking of which, with your "chart" article, maybe under the heading "References" there, you could mention just a few of the main references you used over the years, if you can remember what they were. I mean just a simple list of some of the books you used would be better than nothing at all; sources are very important on Wikipedia. Since that article has not been deleted yet, it may stick around for a while, although eventually it may get merged with one of the other similar articles, who knows. All good wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 12:41, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You are very welcome Oliver! :) Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions or comments about any aspect of Wikipedia. Invertzoo (talk) 18:21, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of sexy Philippine actresses has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No demonstration of notability per the general notability guideline. Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought and this list will be primarily populated by OR.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The article Myron Henry Phelps has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Bluefist talk 07:00, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is an impressive amount of work. However I do have a few of comments.

  • For VP Binay, you can't reference another wikipedia page, so you should instead get the reference that the Alpha Phi Omega members page uses for him.
  • For Elwood brown, the multiple URLs shoved together in the reference that he introduced volleyball to the Philippines aren't needed. Pick one or maybe two and make a more normal reference
  • With all of the links to the Diamond Jubilee Yearbook and On My Honor, it probably makes more sense to list those books at the bottom and reference by page number as you have done. See the reference section to Joseph Stalin
  • The groups should probably be separated out, it is sort of awkward the way that it is.
  • While this is long enough to be its own article, I can't figure out whether it would survive in its current form that way, I don't think there are any individual country lists of notable members other than those which are specific to those who have received a specific award (like USA Eagle Scouts)
  • Please compare with List of Scouts#The Philippines to see whether additional people should be added in one place or another (and link the entry on List of Scouts to the link in the BSP article with a "main" template.

I recognize that you have done a *great* deal of work here, but in some respects the article doesn't feel right, First, Wikipedia prefers prose for history, which this doesn't appear to fit, secondly some of the information (for examples on members of organizations that were responsible on bringing Scouting to the Philippines) doesn't appear to fit with this and thirdly, the references seem more used for parenthetical comments which probably belong in a separate notes section. Is there any article currently on Wikipedia that you are patterning it after?Naraht (talk) 16:02, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Wikipedia prefers prose for history" — The lines make for clarity and easy reading, and keep the reader oriented so he/she does not need to plod through and get lost in a mass of information, a lot of it disjointed. The bullet style minimizes connectives required in a narrative – in order to avoid wordiness and to facilitate the quick delivery of more info detail.
  • "some of the information (for examples on members of organizations that were responsible on bringing Scouting to the Philippines) doesn't appear to fit" — The information on the founding of the Rotary Club of Manila reflects an historian's interest in historical connections, that could look tangential to the casual reader. But since the information is not readily available elsewhere, I have chosen to include it in the chronology if only to provide the completeness which the historical researcher might require or which the interested reader might find fascinating. If you feel very strongly about it, I shall remove the passage on the founding of the Rotary Club of Manila.
  • "the references seem more used for parenthetical comments which probably belong in a separate notes section" — I am still working on achieving a balance between parenthetical comments and footnotes.
  • "Is there any article currently on Wikipedia that you are patterning it after?" — The timeline style is similarly used in Scouting for Filipino Boys (1949) and Boy Scout Book (1972), and the Wikipedia article "Boy Scouts of the Philippines."Oliver Puertogallera (talk) 23:29, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanx for copying it over to my talk page, I'll respond here...
Let me say you have done a *very* comprehensive job and I'd enjoy reading a history of scouting in the Philippines written by you, my concern is what belongs in a Wikipedia article. As far as I can tell, the mini-biographies boxes simply don't belong. For some of these it may be appropriate to have biographical articles of their own though.
Comparing the Timeline section on Boy Scouts of the Philippines to this is like comparing the hill behind my house to Mount Makiling.
I'd like to see whether we can get people from the WP:SCOUTING project (I tried posting to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting a while ago and would like to again.
In your article, you've already got enough information to raise the 10th World Scout Jamboree article from stub class to something higher.
You can have notes and references separate, I'm just not sure how.
Whether or not events in the history of Alpha Phi Omega Philippines should be part of this is a separate issue, its creation yes, but specifics on the hazing incidents don't seem as relevant. (If you've got more information on the exact relationship between BSP and APO-Phil, I'd love to see that added to the Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines)Naraht (talk) 13:11, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This article is the most comprehensive history of Philippine Boy Scouting anywhere. It would not fit in the Wikipedia article Boy Scouts of the Philippines, as I had planned it to be comprehensive, for the purpose of recovering, preserving, and disseminating the lost history of Philippine Scouting. I felt compelled to write it because no one else is willing and able to do it. The old guards are gone; I'm among the last remnants of the old days of Philippine Boy Scouting. If I didn't write this, my knowledge would die with me, and a lot would be lost. The last time something like this was done was in the Boy Scout Book of 1972. I tried and could not find a single copy of that work anywhere, not even in the National Library which handles copyrighting in the Philippines.
Before this Wikipedia article was made, the charter members of the BSA Philippine Islands Council were nothing more than 20 or 22 names in a list. Although sometimes inserted in BSP printed material, no one knew who they were (except for Manuel Camus and Arsenio Luz who were also charter members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines). For the very first time, they are being introduced to the Philippine Scouting world. That is how important this Wikipedia article is. (Possibly, it could also be the last time those pioneers will ever be remembered. As this article does not toe the party line regarding history, it could be suppressed or revised later. I tried before to disseminate info through the Wikipedia "List of Scouts," but an editor in the Netherlands performed a "clean-up" that left the list sterile and senseless.) Hence, I feel that the biographies should be included, if only to teach new generations of Filipino Scouts about their heritage and to give them good examples for emulation, like Doltz, Carman, Bordner, Townsend, Chapman, Hart, Quasha, etc.
Some Scouts are also interested in Scouting history. If they could derive gratification from reading something substantial on Philippine Scouting history, it might develop in them a regular reading habit, something that most Filipinos don't engage in, and might encourage them to do further research following leads within the short narratives included in this article.
On APO (P), I've already deleted several references to APO (P). BSP National President Binay, holder of the BSP Presidency for the longest time, is also the most famous APO (P) member in history.

New Articles...

[edit]

For both the KSP and the BSA council, I'd suggest two things. First, a summary of what they were at the top of the article (two paragraphs max) and then move the article so that it is no longer "History of", Both topics I think make more sense as a full article rather than being *entirely* a chronology. (But keep all of what you've transfered there and keep the link from the History of Scouting in the Philippines)Naraht (talk) 00:33, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Oscar M. Alcaraz

[edit]

The article Oscar M. Alcaraz has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable person, Various copyright issues, No good version to revert to.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Pratap Singh Seth moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Pratap Singh Seth, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
