What does this mean? I want a new section for me!!

Oddly, I was recently told not to move my talk page out of the user space. Don't really know what that means, as my this page is clearly the "discussion" page for my user page. I think, though, that what's even more unusual, is that someone had actually found and viewed this page in the first place. I can't really think of any reason why anyone could have possibly come upon this page in the first place...unless someone didn't care for the grammar/spelling edits I do a hundred times a day.

still just don't GET it...

How does one inadvertently make their talk page an "article" page? And, if we're being technical, aren't all of our user pages (and their respective discussions) "articles" in the true sense of the word? I mean...my user page is an "article" about the user "OcrasAroon" and the talk page about said user is an "article" containing information, opinions, ideas, criticism, suggestions, etc...for the actual OcrasAroon user name?

These are mysteries I'm determined to solve. (! really)

UK bands

Please reconsider this. The articles for British bands use British English, in which bands are referred to as plural (as they have been since the 1950s). Please see, for example, here, under "band names". That is also long-standing consensus on Wikipedia, so please be prepared for some reversion and edit-warring. With respect Rod this would also stand extant for bands from many, many other countries as well as Britain ... consider also Canadian, Australian and virtually every European country. American bands - "be" verb tense changes

(This is a specific section I added for anyone who needs to ask a question or make a comment on this subject so I have it all in one place and don't overlook anything.)

I need to be very clear on all this, so help me out: I was under the impression that, to gather a consensus, one needs to say - "In situation A, the possible approaches are B and C. Please state which option feels correct to you." I would assume the topic would be left open for a short amount of time (anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks) and then closed. At the end of that time, whichever option had the most individual user's advocacy would be accepted as the consensus...let's assume "C". So from that point on, "C" would be the appropriate standard to use in editing. At least until someone disagreed and a new consensus was taken.

To me that feels like a vote. Informal, yes, but a vote nonetheless. One that gathers a consensus. Before I can do anything like this I need to be sure I'm doing the right thing and following the right procedure. Not really. What you need to do is persuade everyone (or virtually everyone) that a new policy or guideline should be adopted. If you present a change and, after fair time and attempts to alert interested parties everyone agrees then it can be adopted, but this is only likely to happen when a policy is non-controversial. If agreement cannot be reached then the attempt will have to be abandoned or some sort of compromise proposed around which everyone can agree. To be honest, in this case, the only likely workable compromise is the status quo, although it may be good to get this formalised. If you think about it, it can only work this way, or editors will not apply it on the individual articles. So its much more about persuasion than voting.--SabreBD (talk) 22:44, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

More than anything else wholesale changes to existing articles, even American ones, would seem to transgress WP:RETAIN which states When an article has evolved sufficiently for it to be clear which variety it employs, the whole article should continue to conform to that variety, unless there are reasons for changing it based on strong national ties to the topic. When an article has not yet evolved to that point, the variety chosen by the first major contributor should be adopted. Where an article that is not a stub shows no signs of which variety it is written in, the first person to make an edit that disambiguates the variety is equivalent to the first major contributor.

For instance your recent edit to The Killers would seem to ride roughshod over the principles of WP:RETAIN, but that is just my opinion for what it is worth. 21st CENTURY GREENSTUFF 23:06, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

It's already on at least four discussion pages, and I propose that a Request for Comment be opened, in the absence of an obvious central venue for this. Ha! I saw the discussion on the WikiProject Rock music page and I was just going to come here and link to this same wiki article, but I see that Michig got here before me. Yes, if the band's name is a plural proper noun, then "were" or "are" (depending on whether they're still together) is correct, even in American English. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody! Stats If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated. Stats GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive. Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%. 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. Participation GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Elections are currently underway for our Guild coordinators. The voting period will run for 14 days and ends on June 30, 23:59 UTC. All GOCE members in good standing, as well as past participants of any of the Guild's Backlog elimination drives, are eligible to vote. The candidate with the highest number of votes will become the Lead Coordinator, therefore, your vote really matters! There is also a referendum to appoint a Coordinator Emeritus. GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles.
