Welcome to the one hundred and fifty ninth WikiProject Yorkshire monthly newsletter.
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 16,901 last month to 17,054 on 28 June 2021). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 205 is ahead of WP:GM who have 88. WP:YORKS also has the lead in FAs at 82 while WP:GM has 71 out of a total number of 4,671 articles.
Currently we have sixty five Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The July 2021 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no nominations on the project talk page.
The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR. You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.
Thanks

Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
Technical news
IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
Arbitration
The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.
Revision deletion of orphaned revision of 2 picture files
Hi Nthep, I am not sure if I should refer the matter to you. There are 2 replaced pictures to be hidden on 13 July 2021, but it is still available. The 2 files are File:Those Who Cross the Line.jpg and File:Great Escape (South Korea TV series) poster.jpg. Please help to do the necessary operation. Thanks. Hey, not sure if you've seen, but the rfl have put a statement up regarding the women's League, basically saying that the season is officially over, (clubs have officially agreed to cancel this weekends round of fixtures), with the top 5 teams in the table to compete for the grand final, and the bottom 5 to compete for the shield. Hi pal, got a user (User:Hbafc92) vandalising Wigan Warriors to apparently "wind up a friend" according to his reply to my request for him to stop on his talk page. I've issued an official warning and suggested that he faces a block if he fails to comply. Could you keep an eye on the situation please? Cheers c87d98b1015:57, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.
Technical news
Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

Olympic and Paralympic Games
Happy Yorkshire Day, this month with the Olympic Games in progress it would be good to take a look at some of the articles related to Yokshire competitors. I have gone through and tagged those competitors that have articles and are born in Yorkshire, though there are a significant number that do not include details of where they are from. If you know ones that should be tagged then please take this opportunity to tag them and add relevant categories to their articles. Many are just a couple of line stubs and could do with improving to give some background to these athletes. Many are in need of photographs and there may be some free ones available to help illustrate articles.
Later in the month there will also be the start of the Paralympic Games. Another set of articles that will get a high number of hits as people search for details of the competitors and could do with work to get them in to shape.
Hopefully we will have more Yorkshire medals from both games to celebrate.

The August 2021 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no nominations on the project talk page. I have gone for a couple of current Olympians this month though could not find any B-class so have gone for a C-class.

You can notice that the original poster was uploaded in a square format and the bot made it smaller. I corrected this by uploading the standard and official rectangular poster with the edit summary "fixing dimensions", which a bot would reduce in a few days. You reverted this back into the incorrect square format, so I left you a message. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 15:14, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
"Fixing dimensions" could mean what you say or equally "I just want to make this bigger" and believe me there are a lot of uploads like that by people who don't get that non-free images need to be kept to a deliberately low resolution. If your edit summary had said "fixing aspect ratio" or something I'd just have tagged it for the bot to fix but as it was it looked to me like a deliberate edit to go back to a bigger version. Either way, a bot will remove the old version in 7 days or more likely it will crop up in the category for those needing a human check and someone will delete it. Nthep (talk) 15:30, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
I noticed you move files manually and update the filenames in articles manually as well. As updating filenames is a drag I created LuckyRename some time ago, you may want to give it a try. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:47, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open
Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:59, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
A discussion is open to decide when, if ever, should discord logs be eligible for removal when posted onwiki (including whether to oversight them)
A RfC on the next steps after the trial of pending changes on TFAs has resulted in a 30 day trial of automatic semi protection for TFAs.

Arbitration
A request for comment is in progress to provide an opportunity to amend the structure, rules, and procedures of the Arbitration Committee election and resolve any issues not covered by existing rules. Comments and new proposals are welcome.
This mural is on a public wall in the main street. It has been pictured in many newspapers and other publications hundreds of times. Rathfelder (talk) 11:30, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
But I havent used it. It's been moved from where I used it. I'm only responsible for my photo. I cant explain other people's use of it. Rathfelder (talk) 12:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Rathfelder Correct, you are responsible for the photo. Your photo is of a non-free work of art, therefore it is your responsibility to ensure that the upload meets Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria (WP:NFCC), see the Implementation section in particular. If the image is uploaded correctly under WP:NFCC and subsequently used incorrectly that is another case, but that is not the situation with this image at the moment. Nthep (talk) 14:02, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
Its now a photograph of the main subject of the article, but its not my article, and I didnt put it there. I upload photos, as I am regularly asked to. I'm not responsible for what other people do with them. Rathfelder (talk) 16:34, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Rathfelder No, you aren't responsible for how an image you upload is used, but as the uploader you are responsible for ensuring that images of non-free works comply with WP:NFCC. This image has never complied with those criteria, as one of the criteria is that a valid rationale forms part of the file information. If there had been an valid rationale originally but the use had changed e.g. it was being used in a different article from that originally given, that wouldn't be your problem to resolve but the lack of any rationale is your responsibility as you should have added one when you uploaded the image. Nthep (talk) 16:49, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Rathfelder Because I'd like to see some sort of rationale added to this file. If you say you can't write a rationale to match the current use of the image then I'd like to know what your original rationale was and see what need amending. It's a pity the lack of rationale didn't get picked up last November but we are where we are. Nthep (talk) 17:06, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@RathfelderThen there shouldn't be a problem adding one. If you don't want to take responsibility for the image you uploaded by adding a rationale as you should have done last November, that's your choice. I'm not bothered who adds a rationale to the image but if it doesn't get done in the next 7 days it will be deleted. Nthep (talk) 17:16, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
@Rathfelder If you think it is a free image and want to leave it be that's your choice. I don't think it is a free image and it needs a fair-use rationale adding. Nthep (talk) 17:37, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
