Administrators' newsletter – June 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2017).
- Doug Bell • Dennis Brown • Clpo13 • ONUnicorn
- ThaddeusB • Yandman • Bjarki S • OldakQuill • Shyam • Jondel • Worm That Turned
- An RfC proposing an off-wiki LTA database has been closed. The proposal was broadly supported, with further discussion required regarding what to do with the existing LTA database and defining access requirements. Such a tool/database formed part of the Community health initiative's successful grant proposal.
- Some clarifications have been made to the community banning and unblocking policies that effectively sync them with current practice. Specifically, the community has reached a consensus that when blocking a user at WP:AN or WP:ANI, it is considered a "community sanction", and administrators cannot unblock unilaterally if the user has not successfully appealed the sanction to the community.
- An RfC regarding the bot policy has closed with changes to the section describing restrictions on cosmetic changes.
- Users will soon be able to blacklist specific users from sending them notifications.
- Following the 2017 elections, the new members of the Board of Trustees include Raystorm, Pundit and Doc James. They will serve three-year terms.
I apologize.
I'm at a middle school and I Just got a message about someone with my IP editing an article to talk about dabbing.
That's not even funny. Why did they pick the article about the arctic, they should have done it on some town in the middle of nowhere so it wouldn't get edited for a while. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.10.63.122 (talk) 14:35, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

- Hi @Fotaun: Thanks. I've really only performed some work on the Mount Everest in 2017 article; just helping out to keep it in shape. It's become a lengthy article already. North America1000 23:34, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
What in the world were you doing that made you come across that nine year old page? And any reason why you didn't delete it yourself? I started to wonder if this was some kind of admin test :-) --NeilN talk to me 05:47, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- @NeilN: I've been patrolling user pages lately via custom Wikipedia searches. I typically use Twinkle, and in this case, I used the notification parameter, which automatically notifies the page creator about the nomination. Other times I don't use the notification parameter. At times I view it as prudent to nominate, rather than directly delete, and then when another admin deletes, it equates to two admins agreeing upon deletion of the page. Lastly, nominating, rather than simply directly deleting, also brings the matter of problem pages to the attention of other admins, which promotes an awareness of such problems that exist on Wikipedia. Deletion discussion
You may be interested in this deletion discussion which relates to some articles you have edited. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 15:18, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notification. North America1000 23:58, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
Greetings NorthAmerica1000. I trust North America is treating you well. I need your assistance concerning something, I want to recreate an AFD-deleted article through deletion review, but saw a notification that I should discuss with closing admin first. I dropped a note for Kurykh but it seem like she isn't active anymore, she hasn't edited WP this month. I looked through her talkpage conversation and it seem like you were the last admin she interacted with, plus there was a time on WP when all AFDs I visited usually have either "Shawn in Montreal" or "North America" categorizing debates, so I thought you were probably the next best admin to provide a next step for me.
This was my submission:
Greetings Kurykh. Hope this message meets you well. I want to create Matse Uwatse article from the scratch, but so that it doesn't qualify under G4, I decided to go to deletion review, on getting there, there was a notification that I must discuss with the closing admin first. This is a summary of my argument:
This article was deleted based on the consensus to delete at the AFD. In terms of policy, it might/should have been kept under a different circumstance. I want to rewrite the article but decided to come here first so that it doesn't qualify under G4. Theoretically, I participated in the AFD that led to its deletion but functionally I can argue that I didn't. Some of the latter delete votes are without strong merit. NBMA is the national award for broadcasters in Nigeria, endorsed by the NBC, just because it was established recently doesn't make it a non-notable body for its winners. BON awards is the oldest Nollywood-only award, and again, just because it was established in the 2000s does not make its winners non-notable. Both are the major awards for professionals in their respective fields. This is Nigeria we are talking about, you don't expect to see award ceremonies that are 50 years old. What we use to measure notability is significant coverage, and these awards have that and the prestige to confer notability on its winners. I believe subject clearly passes WP:ANYBIO and WP:ENT, I can also make a case for WP:GNG. A copy of an older version of the article can be found here (that was before I added a number of sources to it).
I have created close to 300 undeleted articles on WP, if I should recreate, you can be sure it will be encyclopedic, non-promotional and verifiable and inline with guidelines and no experience editor would deem it necessary to nominate for deletion. Do you think I still need to go to deletion review or I should just recreate? Darreg (talk) 15:31, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Darreg: first of all, I've seen you around from time-to-time, and thanks for your work to improve Wikipedia. Obviously, consensus at the deletion discussion was for deletion. Since Kurykh, who deleted the article, isn't readily available to discuss the matter, I'm willing to userfy the article for you, perhaps at User:Darreg/Matse Uwatse. You clearly know the rules, so just don't republish it in its original state, as per WP:G4. Rather, the userfication will provide you a glimpse of where the article was at just prior to deletion, which can assist in creating a new and improved article. If you can create a new article that also qualifies notability via WP:BASIC, or other notability guidelines, that would be fine. Just let me know at your convenience if userficaiton would be of assistance regarding this subject, and thanks for your work to improve Wikipedia. North America1000 15:59, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks sir. It's a huge honour to have been noticed by you for something positive. That is something I'm incredibly happy about. I will appreciate the userfication. I will work from my sandbox. Thanks once again. Darreg (talk) 18:35, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

- Yes, what you have responded is entirely consistent with my expectations, entirely consistent with the sort of thing I personally would have though in your situation, and ... completely useless. Don't get me wrong - attacking you personally is a LONG way from my goals. I completely understand (or at least, I think I do) your POV. And yes, it's much less than a million miles from my own POV. But ... it's completely useless. I'm sorry to tell you that, unlike Donald Trump, I don't know everything. I'm sure that you're going to find the "other matters that I'm working on" more personally rewarding. So what can I say? "Enjoy yourself"? Pdfpdf (talk) 13:31, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Well, without wanting to be or sound negative, if you could find a way to communicate more clearly, I doubt that could have negative results. In good faith, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:02, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

- Hi Fotaun: Thanks. My work on the article is actually a bit minimal, often just organizing, minor copy edits, or using reFill to fix bare urls, and then copy editing afterwards, as reFill doesn't always fill everything in perfectly. Thank you for the star. North America1000 14:23, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

suggestion to move Draft:Torrance_T._Stephens to userspace
Would you please consider moving it out of AfC till it is ready for submission yet again. Devopam (talk) 04:18, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Devopam: This page, which is far from being considered even remotely ready for main namespace, was created on 3 August 2016 by an IP user who has only performed three edits to date. The user's two subsequent edits occurred on 24 April 2017. Moving it "out of AfC" as you state would seem to include removing the AfC template. As it is, even if moved into userspace, but retaining the AfC template atop it, the page would qualify for WP:G13 speedy deletion in another couple of months. Removing the AfC template would de-qualify the article for later G13 deletion. I don't view this as a dire or high-priority matter, so I'll leave it to you to perform a page move if you'd like. If you do, I recommend notifying the user on their talk page about the move. Another option is to just leave it in place. Let me know what you think about this at your convenience. North America1000 11:36, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- hi @Northamerica1000: , first of all apologies for not tracing the real author and going by the last editor. I CSD nominated it as it's past 6 months already and with no hope. Devopam (talk) 11:51, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Devopam: Personally, I would not delete this because the edits I performed on 12 February 2017, although very minor edits, de-qualify the article for G13. However, it is possible that another admin may delete the page, since the edits I performed were inconsequential. North America1000 11:58, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- hi Northamerica1000 , let's leave it as-is for another admin, and I think this will help reduce AfC backlog count. There's so many of them. Devopam (talk) 12:01, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- Devopam: Upon further inspection and consideration, I've added a {{Db-test}} template atop too. There's a lot of markup/tag jargon on the page, that doesn't apply to the page and is not about the subject, to the point that is could be considered a test page. North America1000 12:48, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Some wikis have the larger and brighter OOjs UI edit page buttons. When you write an edit summary there you can now see how many bytes you have left before the summary is too long. [1]
- When you search on Wikipedia you can now find pages on other Wikimedia projects that could be relevant. You see them next to the search results. [2]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 June. It will be on all wikis from 15 June (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 13 June at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will soon be able to get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account. You can test this on the test wiki. This will only work if they fail to log in to your account. [3]
- Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron. You can tell the developers what you need the PDF service to be able to do. Electron now works on all Wikimedia projects. [4]
- Administrators can soon search for deleted page titles and find results that are similar to what they searched for. Today the search only finds pages that are exactly the same as what you search for. This is to make it easier to find pages when you don't know the exact title. Administrators on Arabic, Catalan, English, Persian, German, Italian, Polish, and Russian Wikipedia and on mediawiki.org can test this by adding
&fuzzy=1
to the end of the web address when looking at Special:Undelete. [5][6]

Hi. Perhaps you can help. I closed an AfD on the above article as merge into Elbe Crossing 1, not realizing that the other article was also at AfD. While I personally think the two articles could be merged, when looking at both AfD's in their totality, my making that decision might be a !supervote. When you look at the two discussions, the best course might be to merge what can be merged from both articles into [[Electricity_sector_in_Germany#Transmission_network], as per RoySmith's suggestion. Not sure how to proceed. I'm also posting this as a comment on the second AfD.Onel5969 TT me 15:22, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Onel5969: I recommend that you consider abstaining from performing non-admin closures for debates that are contentious or lacking a clear consensus. Your close at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Elbe Crossing 2 does come across as a bit of a supervote. Since you were interested in the matter, consider !voting in such instances, instead of closing. Both articles ended up being merged into Electricity sector in Germany; if anyone objects, they can always discuss on the article talk page. North America1000 11:30, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks. I do stay away from closing debates that are contentious or lacking a clear consensus. When looking at the single AfD, it seemed to be a clear consensus. It wasn't until I looked at the second discussion that I realized maybe it wasn't as clear as I thought. Hence my request for help. Thanks. Onel5969 TT me 14:03, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Attack pages
Look, I know it's best practice to tag pages and let another admin delete them, but ones this blatant you should really just obliterate on sight. There's mirrors that preferentially scrape pages tagged for speedy deletion, and there's absolutely no need to be bringing these to their attention. —Cryptic 09:18, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Cryptic: Thanks, and a very valid point. I had not considered this before (e.g. sites such as [7], which bring such matters into a more public light), but will certainly do so now and into the future, and act accordingly, deleting clear attack pages on sight. Thanks for your insight regarding this matter. North America1000 10:34, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Images of foods that weren't made in their country of origin
Hi there,
Thanks for all your food-related articles and edits but you should really be more careful when using images of foods that weren't made in their country of origin, using them on face value based only on their name or file description. File:Fried_rice_schezwan_style.jpg, for instance, is an Indian-Chinese dish and not at all related to true Sichuan fried rice although the name suggests otherwise. I've noticed similar mistakes in the past. Keep up the good work but please try to be more careful in future. Cheers, - Takeaway (talk) 05:13, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Takeaway Thank you too for your food-related and other contributions, and thanks for updating the image caption at the Fried rice article. Would you be willing to update the description for the file at Commons? I ask because I hesitate to add "So-called Sichuan-style chǎofàn is a speciality of India" as stated in the Fried rice article to the file description myself, and you come across as more knowledgeable about this particular dish. North America1000 07:57, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again. I changed the image caption on the article and added a ref. I have also changed the file description to prevent future mistakes. I'm really not an expert of Schezwan fried rice. I categorise lots of media over on Wikimedia Commons and I try to make sure that I do that correctly by thoroughly researching what I don't know. And one of my pet peeves is "faux cuisine", food that purports to be an authentic ethnic dish but actually just is some completely wrong version of it. See for instance File:Panangbeefcurry.jpg which used to feature as the main image on the phanaeng curry article. It's just so wrong on so many levels, and using ingredients that would never be used in a phanaeng curry in Thailand. In any case, Cheers, - Takeaway (talk) 03:45, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
- Takeaway: Thanks for your work here and at Commons to keep matters accurate! North America1000 21:09, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

Too Lolo for words
Why would you remove just the link for deleted artist Laurent Véronnez rather than the entire entry? Clarityfiend (talk) 23:13, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- Clarityfiend: I used Twinkle to unlink after the article was deleted, which unlinked from 21 pages, and I also manually deleted some entries: diff, diff, but I missed the one for the Lolo disambiguation page. That's why. North America1000 00:20, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

Reviving a defunct wikiproject
Hi Northamerica1000 and Graham87,
I was thinking about reviving Wikipedia:WikiProject Criminal Biography/Organized crime. I have not yet decided it though. During the period it went defunct, I think there wasn't much activity and/or articles regarding it. But now there is. I am willing to contribute heavily to kick-start the project. There is a lot of tasks to do as per this page Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/MadMax List/1. There are further more activities which have not been included in that page. I mean, if worked on that project properly, it will definitely become a full fledged project.
I am contacting you two cuz you are experienced/knowledgeable editors (nothing to with being sysops), and one of the very few editors connected to the project who are still active.
I am aware that the project will not get attention as soon as it is revived (again). I am also willing to userfy it in my userspace till it becomes active/notable enough to moved to wikipedia mainspace; as per this.
Looking forward to discuss this further. Kindly ping me when you reply. Thanks :-) —usernamekiran(talk) 18:47, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: All I did was move a page on the project, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Criminal Biography/Organized crime/Wikipedia, and re-add an old message. Graham87 00:41, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- But do you have any suggestions Graham? Like, should it be revived or not, and if yes, which method should be used for that purpose? —usernamekiran(talk) 00:47, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: I have no idea. Graham87 01:24, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Graham87: hmm —usernamekiran(talk) 01:28, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: I have no idea. Graham87 01:24, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- But do you have any suggestions Graham? Like, should it be revived or not, and if yes, which method should be used for that purpose? —usernamekiran(talk) 00:47, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Usernamekiran: If you decide to revive the project, below are some tips.
- Notify current project members
- Research and invite prospective project members (e.g. people interested in the topic, who edit in this area)
- Provide links to project subpages on the main project page (e.g. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Criminal Biography/Organized crime/wikipedia
- Provide links to the project on other Wikiproject pages
- Create a project banner for talk pages and a corresponding Quality scale page (e.g. such as this). Then assess pages.
- Just a few ideas. North America1000 21:06, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. :-) I already have some editors in my mind, havent talked to them yet though. But do you think it should be revived? And also, if I revive it, should I do it in my user space, at its current location, or in wikispace? I dont think mainspace would be a good idea in early days. —usernamekiran(talk) 21:15, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- Usernamekiran: I'd probably go for it, but I am biased in favor of Wikiprojects in general. You have the benefit of a project that has a skeleton already in place. I have created two Wikiprojects from scratch, WikiProject Brands and WikiProject Breakfast, which takes a bit more work, and also converted the Cleanup page into a Wikiproject (Wikiproject Cleanup), which took less work. You could improve on the page in a sandbox page first, and then incept when you're ready. North America1000 21:31, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- erm... I didnt understand the suggestion about sandbox. What i was thinking is: to create a project page in my userspace first, then to contact the active editors related to project articles, and then to provide link on other wikiprojects. —usernamekiran(talk) 21:51, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- Usernamekiran: It's up to you. Personally, I would work on components of the project in a sandbox, and then just update the page directly where it's at (here). That way, potential participants would be seeing the improved project page immediately, rather than on a user draft page. North America1000 21:54, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- yes, this is more logical. And you did a huge mistake about admitting your contributions to Brands, and Breakfast. Now be prepared cuz I will be asking you many doubts if I come across any lol. Thanks again. I will try my best to not to bother you, but i cant guarantee it. See you around :-) —usernamekiran(talk) 22:03, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- Usernamekiran: No bother at all, feel free to discuss matters/ask questions anytime. Again, I'm a Wikiproject fan! North America1000 22:06, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
5,00,000 edits
You just made it lol. I will find a nice photo or barnstar tomorrow, and replace this message with it. Happy editing! —usernamekiran(talk) 22:23, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: Thanks. How embarrassing... Actually, I perform a lot of automated edits, such as relisting deletion discussions, deletion sorting, etc. and also lots of minor edits, such as adding links to See also sections in articles, etc. So, a lot of those edits are not supreme in nature.
- Also, check out the Wikipedia:WikiProject Organized crime page now, which I have made some additions to. North America1000 22:39, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: Also, I've joined the project (see here). North America1000 23:14, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Thanks a lot! I am currently on mobile (Blackberry Q5), so cant contribute right now. Also, its 5am here and I should try to sleep lol. See you tomorrow. :-) —usernamekiran(talk) 23:40, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: Yeah, I avoid editing using smartphones...too much of a hassle. Keep in touch. Cheers, North America1000 23:42, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject Organized crime update
- Hello Usernamekiran I have formatted the parameters for {{WikiProject Organized Crime}}, and it should work fine. Let me know if you run into any problems. In the process, the following project pages have been created:
- There are still some things to do, but I am going to take a break from this for awhile. N.b. the following remain to be performed:
- As a part of testing the template, I have assessed the Organized crime and Mafia articles (see their talk pages). Feel free to start tagging article talk pages with the banner, and assessing articles. North America1000 22:17, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! You took away my biggest obstruction. I will be busy for upcoming 3-4 days (less activity on wiki), but I will keep on working on the project. Thanks again. :-) —usernamekiran(talk) 22:37, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks! (from a newbie)
Hello there -- As a relatively new editor, I just wanted to say thank you for reviewing/accepting my proposed article Women Wage Peace. I had created an article directly before on another topic, but it was deleted, and I was feeling a tad insecure about my Wiki-creating skills. I'm looking forward to creating more now. Onwards and upwards! Alanna the Brave (talk) 18:38, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Alanna the Brave: Thank you for creating the new article. Regarding articles being retained on Wikipedia, some main points are to ensure that topics meet WP:GNG, using sources that demonstrate notability in the article, are WP:NOTADVERTs in nature, are not WP:COPYVIOs, and are properly WP:Verified. Many nominations for deletion are based upon the first three points. North America1000 19:57, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
