State of the World (Janet Jackson album)
Someone has decided to rename "State of the World" as the above. However, "State of the World" was a SINGLE/SONG, not an album. I've tried reverting twice but it does not seem to work, could you please kindly change it to "State of the World (Janet Jackson song)", thanks. Reqluce (talk) 23:22, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).
We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.
In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.
You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.
Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).

Sarvagnya RfC
I don't know if Sheffield is any more familiar with the process than I am. However, if you were to review the statement I made, you'd see that Sheffield is in fact referred to several times in my statement, and some of his statements from the conversation linked to therein, so, in effect, I tried to present the statements of both in the single statement. I don't know if that's appropriate, but that's what I effectively did. Don't know if that's sufficient cause to possibly restore the page, though. John Carter (talk) 23:00, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- You know more about this than I do. Your call. John Carter (talk) 23:30, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- Why is the RfC deleted? I certified it within the time limit. I didn't think I had to make a statement of my own. The instructions certainly aren't very clear. SHEFFIELDSTEELTALK 23:36, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- I don't understand, or agree with the admin action you took here. Further to that, several individuals have warned the subject of the Rfc about incivility umpteen times on his user talk page (for instances not limited to that article's talk page discussion), and each time, it's been deleted by himself with erroneous edit-summaries of 'trolling'. His misconduct is appalling with ongoing incivility inflaming disputes, personal attacks, and the like, and it continues because he thinks its perfectly fine, as a result of admin reluctance. There was also clear evidence of canvassing recently too. It's your apparent failure to be bold in investigating his conduct in general (even after being requested to in the past) that has led me to comment here.
A couple of mistakes is fine, but consistently poor judgement - please do not let it continue. I'm holding you responsible if his misconduct escalates.10+ editors have had problems his misconduct, and some have left thanks to him. (I'll give an exact number with names in the appropriate place if it does escalate) - but you'd be wise to actually have a think about it. As before, I will pretend I have not interacted with you (as if nothing has happened) if I encounter you elsewhere on articles and the like. Ncmvocalist (talk) 06:32, 15 May 2008 (UTC)- I replied to the above on the editor's talk page. I have myself been a bit reluctant to "hit the button" because of the high regard some editors have for this person. Based on your comments, I may have been wrong to do so. I will myself definitely report any further actions of this type if I am involved directly, and may even push the button myself if I am not directly involved and the behavior seems to warrant it. John Carter (talk) 15:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

- I was (and still am) clearly frustrated with what little is done regarding his persistent misconduct, but of course, I cannot hold you solely responsible for an escalation. I apologise for stating otherwise - I've struck that bit out. It appeared to me that you completely condoned his persistent misconduct - but I have seen that you have taken the absolute minimum step of leaving a note on his talk page. This is very slightly encouraging (even impressive), given the lack of education (or warning) and speed at which you jumped to judgement on other editors in the past.
- Particularly given that this was not the first time some other editor has noted problems with this editor's misconduct, yes, I did expect you to investigate. There may be no binding obligation or responsibility, but any sensible admin would realize that whatever little has been done (including such notes by other editors AND admins saying "please do not to engage in ... (misconduct) or you may be blocked") has not worked [emphasis added]. Your lack of acknowledgement of how troubling the problem is, other than to say 'I know he has issues' demonstrates the need to. Among other things, it is this that has contributed to the level of frustration, disgust, and reasons why/how editors disengage; not just from a dispute either (but the entire project). But I note, this criticism and disappointment is not limited on the admin actions of you alone - there are others involved, and perhaps others who do the same, and the criticism and my disappointment extends to their actions and them too, even if my views of them as a friend, an editor, or other actions they've performed as an admin may be much more pleasant and desirable. Ncmvocalist (talk) 16:52, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I think the canvassing was actionable, given his lack of acknowledgment. But even if that was too late, final warnings are worded much more differently to such notes I speak of, precisely because of the effect intended. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:03, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- OK. And just to be clear, in saying you are aware of his conduct, you're acknowledging the multiple articles and talk pages (including several not mentioned in the Rfc, that have occurred in the recent past and past) that amounted to persistent gross incivility and personal attacks, among other policy violations? Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:40, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Also, please note 59.182.75.210 - it's suspicious that the only 2 edits made are concerning the Rfc, and it's been posted in a WikiProject India noticeboard. I'll be removing it from there. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:45, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- So it's the sockpuppet of an indefinitely blocked editor who was trolling and disruptive (per block log). Guess it'll need to be blocked too then? Thank you for the clarification, on both. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:55, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
A few notes
Just a few points -
1) Talking of canvassing, I want to bring to your notice thatthese invitations to the RfC by Ncmvocalist to a couple of editors is curious and may itself be canvassing. Agreed, on the face of it, the messages seem to worded neutrally. But WP:CANVASS under #Votestacking says -
“ | Votestacking is an attempt to sway consensus by selectively notifying editors who have or are thought to have a predetermined point of view or opinion (which may be determined, among other ways, from a userpage notice, such as a userbox, or from user categorization), and thus encouraging them to participate in the discussion.
In the case of a re-consideration of a previous debate (such as a "no consensus" result on an AFD or CFD), it is similarly frowned-upon by many editors to send mass talk messages to those who expressed only a particular viewpoint on the previous debate, such as only "Keep" voters or only "Delete" voters. Some Wikipedians have suggested that informing editors on all "sides" of a debate (e.g., everyone who participated in a previous deletion debate on a given subject) may be acceptable. |
” |
Clearly, Ncmvocalist was trying to influence the course of the RfC by selectively inviting editors who he knew held opinions against me. I say he knew because of the following reasons -
- These were users who opined against me on the WQA that preceded the RfC now deleted. Ncmv was also a participant there and he clearly knew that the editors he was inviting held an uncharitable opinion of me.
- All these editors, Carter (Bollywoodblog images, VMN, Zinta, BOI), Ncmv (Carnatic music etc.,), Wikiality (Hogenakal falls), Shahid (Bollywoodblog, Zinta, BOI etc) et al., are editors who have been engaged in content disputes with me in the past. And all of them know that. They have communicated their uncharitable opinions of me in the past between themselves on-wiki. They all clearly know exactly what opinion each one of them has about me.
- Even more curious is the fact that while everyone on the WQA who opined against me got an invitation to the RfC, two long standing editors with whom I've worked the most and who disagreed emphatically with these editors on the WQA did NOT get any invitations. Nor did editors Nadapriya and Skbhat who were participants in the discussions at Talk:Hogenakal falls and who were on the other side of the 'POV fence'.
Clearly, this is evidence of votestacking or attempted votestacking and an attempt to influence the course of the RfC before it even began.
2) And talking of AGF, NPA, CIVIL etc., WP:AGF says that editors arent obliged to AGF where not necessary. And in the case of these editors, they have given me plenty of reason not to AGF. Especially so in the case of Ncmvocalist. Let me explain -
- Ncmvocalist and I were involved in a content issue on Carnatic music. I contested a source he was using and it was taken to RSN. On RSN, it was held that the source was indeed non-RS - just as I had been claiming. Incidentally, Users KNM and Dineshkannambadi had also opined that the source was non-RS. Once RSN also determined it as non-RS, we went ahead and removed both the source and the claim that it was being used to source from the article. During the course of that issue, Ncmv even got blocked for edit warring. Ncmvocalist clearly didnt take kindly to all this and remarked -
- The unreasonable editors from the Kannada (anti-Tamil) group will have to answer for themselves in a while.
The above quote is at once an attack not only on me but on such long standing and respected editors as KNM and DK. It is at once, also a violation of NPA, AGF, CIVIL, and every other policy that was ever meant to facilitate harmonious editing on wikipedia. Also, he reiterated and repeated these attacks on other pages too, including on User:Blnguyen's page where I warned him. John Carter, who filed this RfC (and WQA) against me, sprang to Ncmv's defense on that occasion. Also to note is that around the same time, Ncmv got into an edit war on the Nonet article.. where JC jumped in out of the blue (he'd never edited that article before, nor any article remotely related to the subject of that article) and lent support to Ncmv in his revert warring.
Even more apalling is this edit by wikiality in response to another long standing respected editor of the Sri Lanka wikiproject - Lahiru. In this response, not only does he disrespectfully and summarily dismiss Lahiru's views as biased ("..keep your personal preferences aside"), he also goes on to say..
- "..I know a few more people other than KNM and Lahiru_k who would come here in support of Sarbagnya, including a fruity admin. .." - Clear violation of WP:CIVIL, AGF, WP:NPA etc.,. btw.. not sure what "fruity" means, but surely doesnt sound like a compliment.
Further, he goes on to say -
- I think I will email a few admins with the list of members who I expect to come in support of Sarvagnya and with reasons why, so that I can build my case easily on them. - this, imo is even more apalling.. because, it seems like he is threatening to email a "list of admins" about why they should perhaps disregard the words of those who support me. That is #Campaigning under WP:CIVIL.
Also, even on the talk page in question Talk:Hogenakal Falls, these editors have been routinely uncivil themselves! I havent done much digging but here are just a couple of extracts for Wikiality -
What is even more ironical is that these comments were made on the very WQA and Talk page that they had referred to in the RfC they'd filed -- apparently with the aim of getting me to reduce my incivility! Also, by conveniently disregarding the views of those who disagreed with them on the WQA and going on to file the RfC, they demonstrated a clear abuse of process, which the arbcom has indicated that they dont take kindly to.
As you noted on JC's and SS' talk pages, neither did they make any serious or honest effort to bring their concerns to me nor did they defer to the diversity of opinion on the WQA. The RfC that they filed seemed more like an attempt to harass me and not as a part of resolution of any issue they apparently sought. This is clear in JC's edit on WQA where he dismisses KNM and Lahiru's responses as uninformed and then says -
- "..The RfCU may well go ahead in any event, when this discussion is closed,..". Its almost like they're more eager to file an RfC against me than resolve any outstanding issues.
These are just a few extracts I picked at random and I am sure, if you wanted, I could come up with plenty more. The fact of the matter is that we both may have been uncivil to each other at times but I've never sought to file dishonest WQAs, ANIs or RfCs against any of them. I do think its more than a little rich of them to present themselves as the aggrieved party. I am not sure, but the fact that I've almost always prevailed in the content issues I've had with these users may just be a factor in their being cross with me. Atleast Ncmvocalist in that diff I give above makes no secret of his rage.
And, let me point out again, all the diffs I've presented above of my opponents' indiscretions are from the same time and from the same pages they accuse me of being incivil. All of them are from their recent histories and pertinent to the now deleted RfC. If you carried out an investigation, you'll find out that they've been routinely uncivil themselves over the course of our interactions. In the case of Ncmvocalist, other editors in good standing also have pointed this out. User:MPerel just a few days ago said, of Ncmvocalist --
Clearly, each of my opponents is guilty of pretty much every single indiscretion they accuse me of and I must say your deletion of the RfC is one of the better admin actions I've witnessed in my time on wikipedia. Thanks. Sarvagnya 01:20, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Bhindranwale
You first wanted proof, and I gave you the solid proof.
Now, your changing terms to context ? Look, its a description of a man by a prominent British journalist.
If such a comment was irrelevant, then Mark Tully would never have made such a comment.
Now, as I understand, Bhindranwale has been compared to Osama Bin Laden, you don't need to be a bird brain to see the obvious religious fundamentalist parallels - yet these are usually edited out by proponents of Khalistan who use the human rights bogey issue to further their fundamentalist actions like plane bombings.
Would it not make sense to you that such supporters would prefer not the truth be known no matter how negative it might sound, at least put out the facts and the truths and not shy away from it! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.192.59.194 (talk) 11:16, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

I been trying to maintain Lawrence Taylor since the original main contributor left (Quadzilla99), and I appreciate the work you've done on it, however the ref formatting was already acceptable as it used the format used in FA's Michael Jordan and Tourette syndrome. Sandygeorgia uses the same exact format actually. I wish you would have discussed changing all of the refs format on the talk page before doing so, especially as it increased the size of the article significantly by adding needless code and also cluttered up the page when you edit it. Yemen and Human Rights in Yemen
Hi, Thank you for protecting the pages. From the first edit I made I explained my changes in the discussion page but Zeydi did not reply and he insisted on putting his propaganda supporting one side of an ongoing war. He relies on one biased press report and calls it a reference which nobody is allowed to criticise. If you look at the discussion on the human rights in Yemen article you will find that other people have raised the same points but he ignores everybody and puts his propaganda. There is an article in wikipedia "Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi" which explains some facts about this war and has some references which never claimed any discremination on Shia's. I don't beleive there should be a section about shia abuse in Yemen because there is no abuse for Shia in Yemen. There is a war between the government and some rebels and yes the government have abused the human rights of these rebels and their families but not Shia's in generalm and those rebels represent a very small percentage of Yemeni shia. This is why it is misleading to say that Shia's are being discreminated against. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiarabia (talk • contribs) 22:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC) Wikiarabia (talk) 22:39, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Co-nomination?
A few months back, you offered to nominate me for adminship. Well after completing admin coaching in February under the watchful eye of Acalamari, I decided that June would be a good time to run. As far as I know, Acalamari is going to write up a nomination today for the Rfa to go live possibly tomorrow and so I was wondering if you would still be willing to add a co-nomination. Now there could be another co-nom from Rlevse but I'm currently waiting for their response. Anyway let me know if you're up for it :) AngelOfSadness talk 13:57, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

User sikh history and bhindranwale
Fisrtly, he didnt formally 'enroll' anywhere, thats a term used in levels of higher educational institutions. Its a well known fact Mr Bhindranwale had no qualifications upon enrollment and left with nothing, its a well known fact he was a village illiterate and could not speak English, the article has been povd to such an extent that one almost gets the impression he's made out to be some kind of clone of Dr Albert Einstein of some sort ?
Secondly user sikh history (.com) which is a defuct website forum discussion (albeit DEAD, ie Zero traffic) is putting his own pov especially sex and diet on all matters to the sikh faith. See prohibitions —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.196.3.1 (talk • contribs)
Seven Welshmen
Thanks! Glad you noticed. For my next trick, I have potential articles on six "John Jones"es, which might make a confusing hook... BencherliteTalk 01:20, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
RfB
Hi. This comment's coming here to try to minimise conflict on the RfB page. Just a quick question - if Anthony packed in one of his existing roles, would that change your opinion? (I've no idea if he'd be prepared to) --Dweller (talk) 13:28, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- On reflection, even that suggestion may be interpreted as wikidrama. Scrub it. I'll reword. --Dweller (talk) 13:32, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
OK, let's try again <grins>. Anthony's clearly hard-working and good at what he does. He can manage the (let's face it, less than onerous) extra burden of Bureaucratship. Surely the RfB should be about deciding if he'll be a good Bureaucrat, rather than is he doing too many things (to which I'd always answer yes, only if he was doing a bad job or neglecting them) or is he editing mainspace too little? --Dweller (talk) 13:35, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Saw your answer - that clears things up. Thanks for taking the trouble. --Dweller (talk) 15:13, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
The chaos is creeping in
I'm really sorry, but I won't be able to help you at this time. In addition to Wikipedia stuff, I've got boatloads of crazy activity going on in my "real" life. I wish you good luck with your article, and hopefully I can be of service in the future. Cheers. – Scartol • Tok 02:20, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
1965–1966 Central African Republic coup d’état
1965–1966 Central African Republic coup d’état Copyedit
I've done some copyediting for you (not done yet). I've noticed three things. 1) When stating a time such as 22:30, you should also mention the time zone. 2) It seems you are not using a consistent citation style. Yes, the page number formatting is fine, but you have used {{cite book}} but also plain text formatting. I personally recommend you convert your refs to use {{Harvard citation no brackets}} with {{Citation}}-formatted books under the 'References' section. Contact Jbmurray (talk · contribs), he'll show you how to use these together to properly format the book refs. 3) Avoid words like "just", "only", "meanwhile" - they read nicely, but it's not encyclopedic. — Wackymacs (talk ~ edits) 18:46, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Looking better (thanks for the quick response). Yes, please add time zones to the other times - use an abbreviation such as EST if they're the same as the first time zone mentioned. — Wackymacs (talk ~ edits) 20:07, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Last month's Collaboration of the Month, Magic Johnson was a great success. A total of 560 edits were made to the article during the month of May, and the article was eventually nominated as a Featured Article Candidate. Although the article was not promoted, it was significantly improved through the work of many editors. This month's Collaboration of the Month is Steve Nash. Although this is article is already a Good Article, it still can be improved. In particular, all prose should conform to Featured Article standards, all statements should be verified, and the text should be in a neutral point of view. If there is anything you can do to improve the article, then please help out.
The Collaborator of the Month is given to the editor with the most number of substantial, beneficial edits to the article chosen as the Collaboration of the Month. This month's Collaborator of the Month award goes to Chensiyuan (talk · contribs). Although he had previously helped Magic Johnson to became a Good article, he made literally hundreds of edits during the month of May. For his contributions, he is rewarded with the NBA Collaborator of the Month Award. However, all beneficial edits made by any editor was a help. Other members of the project that contributed to the article include:

Re: Copyedit request
Hi Nishkid64, I have seen your name around, nice to meet you. I owed Blnguyen several favors, but will see what I can do for your article. It might take me a day or two, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:16, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- I did a copyedit of the lead and will work on the other sections next. If you are online, please look over my changes and make sure they are OK and that I did not introduce any errors inadvertantly. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- OK, I am done - hope it is OK. I also had some questions I could not resolve that I asked on the FAC page. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:19, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
