Welcome
[edit]Welcome!
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Someone must have been lazy, as you have not been welcomed yet. Thank you for your contributions. Since you have been here for a while, we can pretty much assume you are not a troll, vandal, or clueless newbie. I hope you continue to like the place and don't get all grumpy and leave over nothing. Here are a few good links for newcomers, even though you aren't one:

I hope you still enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian, and won't get mad over something stupid and leave! By the way, please be sure to continue to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome, and sorry for your not being welcomed in the past! Omega Directive
[edit]Hi, i'm the guy who wrote the page. The problem with the omega particles as represented was that they are meant to be unstable, but the aliens who created it were trying to stabilise it to give their culture a future (using resonance frequency or some other piece of treknobabble). The question is unresolved in the episode although they seem to form a pattern before they are destroyed. It's just a funny old universe really. Does this help? Pydos 11:49, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Plame Affair
[edit]Hi, I noticed your question about Wilson's politicial contributions on Talk:Plame_affair. I pulled up some info from the FECinfo political contributions database, which indexes the free, public contributions info. I hope this helps. I found the receipt for Wilson's contribution to Bush's campaign in the 2000 election cycle, but I did not find any contributions to Gore. The Kerry contributions start in May 2003, I believe. --Zippy 16:19, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

- What scared me was that he might have discovered it in September, but written the article in USA Today only in December. He di', di'n't he?

BYU Religious Requirements
[edit]You asked the following about the Brigham Young University page:
I'm a bit confused by the above statement. It seems to suggest non-LDS students need to regularly attend some sort of religious service. This would imply that atheists, agonostics, and non practicing religious individuals can't attend BYU. I also wonder what happens with religions where regular attendance of some sort of religious service is not compulsory or even generally common, e.g. Buddhism, Hinduism, or even Sikhism which is mentioned in reference in the article later on. Can anyone help clarify the matter? is my interpretation correct?
As far as I know, the endorsement by a religious leader simply states that the student in question is living by the standards his religion requires. If attendance of services is one of these requirements, than the leader shouldn't endorse the student if he doesn't regularly attend services. If, though, as you ask, attendance of services is not required, I can't see why a student would not be endorsed for not attending. Basically, just live by the tenets of your religion, and you'll be fine.
Hope that helps! Merry Christmas!

Sloths
[edit]Oh man, I wish. I took that picture during a spring break trip around Costa Rica. I actually got to hold that sloth in my arms. It was so cool. Anyway, the camera I used has both still, audio, and video capabilities. Unfortunately I didn't have the memory card space to shoot video while I was there as the place I was staying during the time I took the sloth pictures didn't have internet access so I couldn't upload the photos to clear space. That was horrible grammar. Wait, there was internet access in that town. Hmm. Oh, I know what the deal was. The room we were in had large, almost floor to ceiling, windows all the way around and was on the top floor of the building. This meant that all pictures were backlit. I had to use a flash to balance it out and then adjust the brightness. Shooting quality video from a palm-sized digital camera would have been near impossible. Thanks for giving me an excuse to go back there, though. Now I just have to convince my parents to donate airfare and a week's lodging so I can shoot a 10 second video segment for Wikipedia. :) —WAvegetarian•CONTRIBUTIONSTALK• EMAIL• 19:32, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Remeber the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Charlie Sheen and Alex Jones interviews? It reached nothing even remotly resembling consensus, but it was deleted anyway? I don't see what's PoV about the fact that there was a craze. With regard to your actual edit, I agree that the "for us" shouldn't be there, but not for the reason that you gave. It had nothing to do with people being interested in what happened in the West (though why do you assume that readers won't be interested in that?); the article said that it was good fortune because it led to the making of films of dancers in the late-nineteenth century that would otherwise not have been made. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:36, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Mel Gibson mugshot photo
[edit]I didn't want to take the entire discussion at the fair use pages, so I wanted to bring this to you. The mugshot photo taken of Gibson was taken by the LASD, the police agency that arrested and booked Gibson. I found out from their terms of service that their images are non-commercial only (which is against our policies). Some believe that mugshot photos are PD upon creation, but it is only true in some areas. I tried to contact the LASD about the clarification of the photo, but no response was made by them. I know Mel doesn't like the photo, but my main goal is to make sure the license is right. I hope this should be enough to explain the situation. [edit]On the main page talk, someone asked this:
The Socialist Party gains in Dutch elections, while Jan Peter Balkenende's (pictured) Christian Democrats retain their plurality" is it plurality or popularity ?--Pixel ;-) 12:36, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
You answered:
Plurality is a well understood English word with a specific meaning when it comes to elections. This is the normal English wikipedia, not the simple one. Do you suggest we give up on all words and just don't communicate? Nil Einne 11:43, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
I wonder if you found that very nice, very helpful, or very wiki at all. Because I found it the opposite of those things.
Furthermore, User:Pixel ;-) was merely asking a question, not asserting anything. He or she wasking for help, or for an answer, and instead had you jumping down his or her throat. Grow up and don't be an ass. Post to my Talk if you have qualms or queries. Cheers. Shagmaestro 14:25, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- I read your post to my talk page, and I apologise for taking your comments out of context. It was my error, and I certainly jumped at you the way I asked you not to jump at others. I apologise for being a hypocrite as well as an ass myself. Case closed! Shagmaestro 15:41, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Well this one ain't closed. I think that your comments on the Humanities ref desk about the "photographs" of John Ingram were uncivil and did not assume good faith. Sure the OP was ambiguous, but I think they deserved a little more credit than to be ridiculed and accused of trolling. Please chill a little. --Dweller 15:54, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- I moved your troll accusation about the "photographs" of King Henry to the Discussion page for Ref Desk, because I did not want a new Wikipedia contributor to feel like their head had been bitten off for using words imprecisely, and time seemed of the essence, because a questioner may check back right away to see what the contributors to Wikipedia, in their collective wisdom, have come up with in response to a question. I wish, in retrospect, that I had just contacted you first to express my wish that the response be modified to sound less like an accusation or attack. Best wishes. In responce to your "fuck the British Empire"
[edit]I am so very offended, i have just gone round to my local petral station to buy several cans of petral and Malasian/New Zeland flags, i will them join an angery mob and burn dowm the Malasian and New Zeland embassys in London shouting "Behead those who insult the British Empire" and "Malasia watch your back, Winston Churchill is comming back". If this is not enough i will strap explosives onto myself and onto any 14 year old children i can find, and run at the Malasian infidels shouting "God save the queen", then blow myself up for the British Empire!!!
LOL
I don't really want a retern to the British Empire, it is more of a joke to be honest, and you are more than welcome to slag it on on my talk page, but just remember that the British Empire modernised Malasia greatly, and created New Zeland. --Boris Johnson VC 09:53, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Huh?
[edit]I seem to have deeply offended you with my question about Blacksad on the Entertainment Reference Desk. I would normally apologize, but your accusation (which I assume was aimed at me) was completely incorrect. I stand up for homosexuality, and get my fair share of ridicule for it. I'm not religious and I most certainly do not believe a person will go to hell if they have sex before marriage. However I do believe somone stands a good chance of contracting an STD if they have frequent unprotected sex and I do agree with your opinion on America (BTW, I live in Canada).
If your comment was not aimed at me, then I have no idea why you were expressing your opinion on the reference desk under my question. BeefJeaunt 18:57, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I was only joking, i hope u diden't really think i was planning to burn down embassys. I don't really advicate a retearn to the British Empire, but i am still convinced that the net effect of the British Empire has been positive (as i mentioned New Zealand woulden't even exist, and Malasia and much of the rest of the world have been graetly modernised). I don't think that having colonies is bad, only if you have them for the wrong reasons. --Boris Johnson VC 21:54, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Fair use policy
[edit]You still don't understand what I'm trying to say. Because there are no legal reasons for fair use criterion 1, it cannot and should not carry the force which you are putting behind it, and nowhere- not in one word of the requirements as they are actually written. Put simply, the policy you suggest is downright absurd, and the restrictions you were trying to put on it do not yet exist in any written policy- the page you showed me is not yet official policy. The real policy page says that free images should be easily avalable, and any sane definition of easy is going to exclude crossing the globe to get it. Millions of people live in cities? well, I don't, and until the system for tagging desired to be replaced images is changed from, "we're going to delete this, you evil editor" to "this is listed on xyz page for a local to replace," I and only I am the only editor that matters. Requesting a free image is one thing. Threatening deletion to extort one from editors is beyond ridiculous, is not a helpful option. If you believe somthing is replaceable, replace it or list it somewhere for someone else to replace. Thanatosimii 14:46, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Stalking.
[edit]You have recently made edits that I am concerned about. After commenting on the Ahmose image, you proceeded to contradict me [1] there and [2] there. However, those two pages have absolutly nothing in common except that I have made comments on policy to them. On an encyclopedia of 1.5 million articles, the chances that this would happen by fortune are so astronomically low that I can say with complete certainty that you're stalking me, and the fact that you say nothing except contradict me makes your behavior trollish. Stop. Thanatosimii 21:14, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Your behavior
[edit]I have decided to rephrase myself, to expedite our cesassion of contact. Any validity to your beliefs has been entierly ruined by your tone and your lack of civility. Perhaps it's just the way you write things, as I see you have managed to irritate many people, however I do not believe any claim that you never had malice in your behavior for one reason. Put simply, "methinks the lady doth protest too much." Your behavior thus becomes both sanctimonious and patronizing.
I informed you from the very first post that I perfectly understand the rules and policy, and now you come running at me saying you think I've known them all along? I know them, but I find them unapplicable inasmuch as the critera for what is replacable are not yet an actual policy, and the spirit of the enforcement of criterion 1 is to avoid fair use images that are easily obtainable by large portions of society. You, on the other hand, interpret it stronger and then accuse me of desiring to break it. However, by not contesting the entierty of the fair use claim, you tacitly acknowledge that the image is beneficial, and by proposing deletion for an image that is beneficial in order to coerce someone to get another one, your interpretation is in fact in violation of POINT, however well intentioned you might be or whether or not you intended it. The entierty of your claim falls apart if someone does not hold your particular position on what is and what is not meant by the spirit of criterion 1, and the only "policy" which exists to define exactly what is and what is not replaceable has not passed consensus and therefore is not binding.
However, what you did next was uncalled for. Your assumption of bad faith on my part lead you to write several tirades on numerous pages, including my talk page, accusing me of all manner of evil. I'm sorry, but you can't come screaming and yelling and three sentances later say, "if I'm wrong, sorry." Also, you cannot go around trying to clean up other editors with whom you disagree, and despite your protestation, your words betray your true motives, and your comments obviously indicate that you didn't read much more than my own comment, since the first discussion was both taken care of and now dead, and the second discussion had nothing whatsoever to do with a biography of a living person, and your comment was entierly irrelevant to the situation, except to contradict me on a technicality. You have a penchant for parting shots as well, and that cannot be charecterized as in good faith either.
I have extreme wikistress due to your incivility, so here's the simple version. Although under stress some of my words and points came out sounding wrong, I have only ever intentionally argued against the current interpretations of replaceability, and since I do not share your pov and there is no actual policy advocating your pov, your current remarks and behavior have been entierly uncalled for, as have been your three attempts at parting shots. I have extreme wikistress and put up a sign directed at you saying "I'm not calm enough to interact with editors right now, so go away" and you still put up a parting shot, making your behavior even more inappropriate. The sign is still up, and I expect you to abide by it. Thanatosimii 21:24, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Long live the British Empire
[edit]I know u said u didden't want to hear from me again, but u made several points which i feel duty bound to respond. I do fundimentally agree with u that the British empire was created to increase Britains power, although it's creaters did believe that they where helping local people, as was the case. However i strongly disagree with u that third world countrys would have modinised without the help of the empire, they where for better or worse still stuck in their old ways, and the british empire brought them stability and modernisation. Also countrys created by the British empire such as New Zeland would certainly not have existed without us, and New Zealand would be like parts of Indonesia with a few small tribes sitting on an island.
I think that the main reason that the third world countrys are not greatful for the British empire is out of the embarrisment that they needed it's help, and they tend to ignore all of its benifits. --Boris Johnson VC 09:29, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I apologise for my behvaiour. I agree that I shouldn't have posted my views like that. Though I still won't budge from that opinion. It is a pain to see Pakistani wikipedians contribute almost nothing for Pakistan WikiProject(they have only 1 featured article) but come around vandalising India articles or creating unnecessary debates about petty things in India-related articles. If the hard work of Indians pays off on the main page they have an objection. Not only myself but several other Indians have become sick and tired of this nonsense.
I am not sure whether the admins have noticed this destructive mentality.
However I agree that such views should not be posted publicly.Maquahuitl

Re: Talk main page archive bot
[edit]Yes, in retrospect I think the random unsigned nonsense comments were what was keeping the cricket discussion from being archived. All the comments in the past few days have pretty much been off topic and not useful, (The last one was extolling the virtues of football!) so its best that it was archived anyway. I usually do a once monthly clean up of talk main page regardless of the bots, as they tend to leave edit artefacts about. Yeah I was wondering about the bot's archive size limit, as it was above the warning level already. I poked around to see if I could find the code that changes that, but couldn't. --Monotonehell 08:50, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

NFL Draft
[edit]There are two types of players available in the draft:
- Those who have completed their four years of college eligibility and are automatically eligible for the draft.
- Those who are at least three years out of high school and have declared themselves eligible for the draft, forfeiting their remaining college eligibility.
There are thousands of players in the first category, the vast majority of whom are not likely to be chosen or play football professionally. Even though someone whose college career is over doesn't need to declare himself eligible, it would be very strange for someone not interested in playing in the NFL to be drafted. Teams generally speak to potential draftees before the draft, and it would be common knowledge that a player was uninterested in playing profesionally.
(A footnote: The very first NFL draft pick, 1935 Heisman Trophy winner Jay Berwanger, was uninterested in pro football and never signed with the team that drafted him. That was back when pro football players didn't make a lot of money and the draft was not nearly as scientific as it is today.)
This article in the Cincinnati Post explains what happened to the 479 people in the second category from 1990 to 2002:
- 322 were drafted
- 65 were not drafted but signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents
- 96 were not drafted and were not signed by an NFL team
As mentioned above, there is no official definition of "draft prospect." A PR guy at a small college might define his team's star player as a "draft prospect" in the team media guide, but that may just mean he's got an outside chance of being drafted at all. My personal opinion would be that any college player who is likely to be drafted is "notable," since there has undoubtedly a great deal of publicity written about him. Finally, it's relatively uncommon for players to be physically present during the draft, which lasts two days. Usually, players watch on TV and wait to get a phone call. -- Mwalcoff 23:22, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Request for help regarding photos in the Nambassa article
[edit]Hi Nil. Seeking your advice here. Please refer to this statement by you on the Wikipedia: New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board, regarding a solution to reduce the number of photos in the Nambassa article by having these available on a commons gallery instead thus reducing the size of the primary article. [5]
Quote. Nil “I disagree with that. If we have high res photos under a suitable license, there is no reason to downsize them. You could produce alternative versions if necessary but IMHO don't delete or modify any images, unless you're sure you've increased the quality. However the photos would be best kept on the commons not wikipedia IMHO. I would suggest the photos not used inline in the article be removed from the article. Link to the commons gallery instead with all the photosNil Einne 16:14, 22 December 2006 (UTC)”
How does one link the photos into a "commons gallery" (what is this gallery) and yet be able to access them if required with a link from the inline article. Thanks kindly, please advise. Mombas 11:02, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: Whilst
[edit]Though I was speaking somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the Whilst page itself gives good reason for the preference of "while". Quoting:
Whilst is synonymous with while in standard British English; in American English, it can be considered pretentious or archaic. In their style guides, modern publications on both sides of the Atlantic deprecate its use (along with "amidst" and "amongst"), for example:
- Times Online Style Guide: [6]: "while (not whilst)"
- Guardian Style Guide: [7]: "while not whilst"
- Hansard: [8] PDF, the Canadian Parliament record.
Fowler's Modern English Usage deprecates several uses of "while". At times it is inappropriately used as a conjunctive: actual conjunctions like "and" should be used instead. Its usage as "elegant variation" is also discouraged, as it is masquerading as a "formal word".[1]
End quote. Wikipedia definitely doesn't need any more pretension or archaism. But in accordance with the Manual of Style, I still only change it when it's inconsistent with the rest of the article - which is surprisingly often. (Additional edit: I have just noticed that the Whilst page is itself a redirect - to the While page. ;) )

Whiteboard vs. felt-tip pen
[edit]Hi, still no success to report. DuncanHill 20:47, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
As you observed on WP:VPT, the copyright status of this image is incorrect, and it probably shouldn't be here on Wikipedia for copyright reasons. I suggest that you should crop the image to just the content generated by Wikipedia, minus the sidebar; then I think {{Wikipedia-screenshot}} would be a valid free-use licence as long as you gave a link to the version of the template that you took a screenshot of (and you could then place {{db-author}} to request the deletion of the badly-licenced picture). Hope that helps! --ais523 16:31, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- I actually thought of that and cut the image to only show the rounded portions but I was still slightly concerned at the time that simply showing how IE rendered the templates could be considered as showing the "interface". (I later realised this was rather unlikely.) So I decided it best to just upload it as unlicensed and let it be deleted since I didn't feel it was really necessary in the long term anyway. Then I uploaded the wrong image but since I was planning to let it be deleted I just let it be :-P But as you and another editor feel otherwise I've changed to the other one which should be completely free Nil Einne 21:34, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

- To be honest, I'm not really sure what you're complaining about. I admit, I was being a bit mean when I addressed your Taiwan in China comment but since you'd previously nitpicked on my comment I didn't see any harm. I do consider it important to draw a distinction between the PRC and ROC as I said, and probably would have addressed your comments about China had it not been from you anyway. Really when someone says "Taiwan isn't part of China" they're just asking for it IMHO. That is the only time when I have 'pestered' you so to speak so I'm not sure why you're so worked up about this. I may have responded to some of your other comments but in most cases I didn't notice it was you responding and even if I did, the fact it was you was irrelevant. I often address comments when I disagree with them and I also address comments when I feel they are flawed even if I agree with the main point. Anyway I apologise for any offence since none was intended. Although to be honest, I couldn't give a flying flip if you ignore me. But a word of advice, it might help if you learn to follow threads and learn to indent properly since discussions can get very confusing when you don't indent properly and don't follow threads properly. Cheers Nil Einne 10:23, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

- Ok well I didn't know about the thread thing. I suppose you mean that if you indent at the same "level" as the previous guy, you agree with him? Interesting. And as for the China thing, you have to be a bit more realistic. I know that encyclopedias are all about accuracy, but how many people do you think have heard of the word "Republic of China"? Few. Many News reporters these days use the more common and more informal term Taiwan. Perhaps due to political correctness wanting to mention only one China. In support of this statement, I would also like to say that the PRC is more commonly referred to as CHINA! Lol but true?
- The word China itself is ambiguous with these two countries. However, when compared with Taiwan, as I had attempted to do, there is no confusion. The media often uses these words and it is not confusing to most nowadays.
- In effect, your comments were a preemptive attempt to clear any future confusion as to what I was saying. I guess that is admirable but it could have been nicer, but you have already apologized so I guess I've given a long enough story. I thank you or your apology. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tourskin (talk • contribs) 16:39, August 30, 2007 (UTC)

Personal Attacks
[edit]It seems that in your edit summary for the Myanmar article, you refered to another user as an 'idiot' please be aware of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_personal_attacks and keep such thoughts to yourself. The fact that they tried to change Myanmar to Burma without discussion, and it got reverted, should be enough - there is no need to resort to personal attacks.Sennen goroshi 18:03, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
- When I made the change I though the only change they had made had been to claim that the Union of Myanmar was an unofficial name. I do think such a change is stupid and anyone who makes such a change is either hopelessly misinformed or a POV pushing idiot. So while the comment may not have been worded as best as it could, I make no apologies nor will I change my behaviour in this regard in the future. It is fairly rare I comment so bluntly on behaviour in any case. Indeed your IMHO overeaction makes me more reluctant to do so (I'm not saying this to start a fight just pointing out that as NPA says it's usually best to ignore the occasianal borderline comment). If you check out the comment I made to the specific contributor when I realised what had happened, you will see that I was resonably polite about the bigger issue when I realised what it was. Cheers Nil Einne 06:36, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- it's not too hard to edit wikipedia, without resorting to personal insults - you may well think that editor was an idiot and I might also think someone was an idiot for trying to get away with such a blatant edit (or they may just be unaware of wikipedia policy regarding NPOV) but despite a million and one retarded edits, i won't resort to using a personal insult, I might accuse someone of bias, but as far as im concerned that is relevant to editing wikipedia. but to tell the truth, i dont really care, i would happily remove the no personal insults rule, its not as if the word idiot offends me, i use far worse on a daily basis.Sennen goroshi 19:23, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Myanmar naming
[edit]Thanks for your efforts as well. It looks like a hopeless battle, though. Sadly, a vast number of Wikipedia editors come from the US and the UK and have never really been exposed to the term Myanmar outside of political discussions. Having had part of my education in the Philippines, the country has always been called "Myanmar" with "Burma" used only in the context of "the old name for Myanmar". People in Southeast Asia seem to have adopted the new name without any fuss. We'll see what happens in the next few days. --Polaron | Talk 00:41, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Haizum
[edit]My problem with User:Haizum is not disagreement as such. He's entitled to his opinions. However his demeanor is uncivil and he has made no attempt to seek consensus before repeatedly reverting. The article as it stood last night represented a consensus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pleasantville (talk • contribs) 10:15, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- I've previously met Haizum and I do find him frustrating to deal with at times. However in this specific case, it seems he did have some valid points. While I agree, it would have been better for him to fix the problems himself since they weren't that hard to fix; or at least say specifically what he wanted, IMHO since he did explain what he was complaining about it was best to just consider if he had a valid point and if he did, work out how to fix it. (If he didn't explain why you don't think there's a problem and wait for him and/or other's to respond.) Tags are after all there so that others can address issues which an editor is unable to deal with him/herself for whatever reason. AFAIK general consensus is to leave them there until the issue is dealt with or there is a resonable consensus that there is no valid issue. I looked into what he was complaing about and attempted to address it when I agreed there was a problem and he seems to be mostly satisfied. Remember the goal is to make a better article. My personal views are I think much closer to yours then his so it is helpful to get an alternative viewpoint which can sometimes notice stuff we may miss. While we could perhaps do without Haizum's manner, ultimately it's best to ignore it when possible. In any case most editors have their own flaws, I know I can sometimes get too rant-ish on talk pages Nil Einne 11:33, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for the detailed article. The reasons why I changed the tile Hebei Spitrit oil spill to a new title of 2007 Korea oil spill are as follows:
- Hebei Sprit is less known to readers than Korea oil spill. Mass media prefers to call it south korea oil spill rather than Hebei Spriti oil spill
- Unlike Exxon Valedez oil spil, for which Exxon Valdez was solely responsible, the title Hebei Spirit oil spill may give an unintended connotation that the VLCC Hebei Spirit is exclusively accountable for this disaster.
- The article I had started with the title of South Korea Oil Spill was moved to the article of Hebei Spirit oil spill you created later. Thank you for the good job, though.Chmyr (talk) 18:45, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Pre-Meiji Period: Use of Japanese era name in identifying disastrous events
[edit]Would you consider making a contribution to an exchange of views at either of the following:
As you may know, Wikipedia:WikiProject Disaster management came up with entirely reasonable guidelines for naming articles about earthquakes, fires, typhoons, etc. However, the <<year>><<place> <<event>> format leaves no opportunity for conventional nengō which have been used in Japan since the eighth century (701-1945) -- as in "the Great Fire of Meireki" (1657) or for "the Hōei eruption of Mount Fuji" (1707).
In a purely intellectual sense, I do look forward to discovering how this exchange of views will develop; but I also have an ulterior motive. I hope to learn something about how better to argue in favor of a non-standard exception to conventional, consensus-driven, and ordinarily helpful wiki-standards such as this one. In my view, there does need to be some modest variation in the conventional paradigms for historical terms which have evolved in non-Western cultures -- no less in Wikipedia than elsewhere. I'm persuaded that, at least in the context of Japanese history before the reign of Emperor Meiji (1868-1912), some non-standard variations seem essential; but I'm not sure how best to present my reasoning to those who don't already agree with me. I know these first steps are inevitably awkward; but there you have it.
The newly-created 1703 Genroku earthquake article pushed just the right buttons for me. Obviously, these are questions that I'd been pondering for some time; and this became a convenient opportunity to move forward in a process of building a new kind of evolving consensus. --Ooperhoofd (talk) 18:28, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Re: Grand jury (De Anza baseball
[edit]Re: your question, yes, a grand jury is most commonly a group of people that have been summoned for the express purpose of hearing such evidence as a prosecutor may want to present (I think that they usually they don't present all of their evidence) about a possible crime. The grand jury then, should they feel that there is sufficient evidence of a crime, can return an indictment, which provides a prosectuor with the ability to go forward with the charge. I think in some jurisdictions the indictment is required to go forward with a prosecution, while in others it is not required, but in all cases in gives the prosecutor political cover in pursuing the charge. In this case, I'm not sure what the grand jury determined. However, if, for example, the alleged victim was too intoxicated to remember anything about that night, it would be difficult for the prosecutor to overcome an alleged attacker who claim ed that there had been consenual sex. I think tha the prosecutor's decision not to go forward was based on something like that. Xymmax (talk) 06:11, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

I award you the "Barnstar of Fighting USA Electioncruft"
[edit]I agree. Although the increasingly front-loaded primary-season schedule means that the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary are the two most crucial events in the choosing of US presidential nominees, and whoever wins the two of them will almost certainly end up as one of the two people who have a chance of becoming the next US president, this caucus is basically NN. The United States of America, unlike Malta or the New England Patriots, is a fairly small nation whose president has had next-to-nil impact on the rest of the world for the last seven years. To me, the real question is whether we should be maintaining articles on local celebrities like Obama and Huckabee in the first place. Obama is a senator from Illinois, only one of fifty states, and Huckabee is a governor of another one of these states. To my mind, this sort of thing is basically electioncruft and primarily of local interest. It's unencylopedic to include this sort of shit, IMO. Who really cares who becomes the next president of that shit country? I don't really care if a bunch of major media outlets on other continents carried it as front page news - they probably feel obligated to do that, and no one really even wants to read it. Also, so what if Obama is black in a nation that has never had a black nominee before, and got a strong majority in a nearly all-white state? It doesn't really matter who wins; the winner will just be a puppet of the US corporate-military cabal behind the scenes. Bravo, Nil Einne and other men of character, for keeping this sort of information off the Wikipedia front page and limiting it to where it belongs: the front pages and lead stories of various fraudulent house organs of the international capitalist class, from the BBC to Der Spiegel. Now, how about those New England Patriots? Speaking of grievances that I have, why the extremely short run for the following important ITN item: "Queen Elizabeth II formally opens the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link and London's St Pancras terminus, the new home for Eurostar trains (pictured) linking London with Paris and Brussels." This seems like some heavy stuff. And yet it only ran for a few days on ITN, only about ten times longer than news of the likely US presidential nominees, despite being about one hundred times as important. WTF? 65.190.89.154 (talk) 22:30, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- In all of history, I have found only one example where an event in an ongoing and lengthy process of government formation was included in ITN: "Belgian King Albert II intervenes to take state reform off the table in the 2007 Belgian government formation, which has lasted a record five months." This is the only example, ever. To be honest, I only clicked on one historical version of ITN to conduct my search and found this example without any effort at all, but it is likely the only example of its kind. 65.190.89.154 (talk) 22:42, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- What I don't understand is why USA-Americans feel the obsessive need to dominate this encyclopedia with their own localism, just as they feel the need to dominate other countries. As long as USA-Americans are allowed to edit here unfettered, this encyclopedia will be no more than a compendium of their various local obsessions and complexes, as they understand little outside of their own borders. And as long as they are allowed to contribute to ITN, it will be cluttered with babbling about the lengthy process of their government formation, and free of important information about trains in England (=important country, very European these days), events in the lengthy process of government formation in Belgium, and the New England Patriots. I think we seriously need to consider some sort of action.65.190.89.154 (talk) 22:50, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

- Apologies for my outbursts, Nil Einne. I want to ntoe that I was being sarcastic and was attempting to protest the exclusion of the Iowa caucus information, which seemed like it was being done more to make a point than to serve the interests of WP. 65.190.89.154 (talk) 00:57, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Admin?
[edit]Are you interested in becoming a Wikipedia administrator? Given your length of involvement here, and the areas of Wikipedia that you frequent, you probably already have a very good idea of what that means, but you might like to review Wikipedia:Administrators anyway. For you, I think perhaps the big advantage would be the ability to edit the main page components such as the In the News section. Having another person regularly updating that section would be good for the encyclopedia. I understand that DYK needs more administrators regularly transferring material to the main page too.
Please give it some consideration, and if you're interested then reply here, or on my talk page. I'd be pleased to nominate you.-gadfium 20:28, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- Bizarre, I was just stopping by to gauge the same thing, given you reasoned and intelligent responses at In the news and Errors... --Stephen 11:50, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry I haven't responded for a while... I've been considering this and I've finally decided I'm a bit too busy with both other stuff on wikipedia and real life stuff to bother at the moment. I thank you both and also Ferdia below for your support and when I get my other stuff sorted (which hopefully won't be too long), I'll let you know if I'm interested. Cheers and thanks again Nil Einne (talk) 20:38, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
That kids new section on the main page.
[edit]Hey Nil, you more then likely recognise me from the Main Page, you think I might have been a bit hasty deleting that IP Address/kids section on the Main Page? ~Ferdia O'Brien (T)/(C) 15:15, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know. When I saw it I was originally going to post something to the AN asking someone else to respond because I was unsure what to say but decided in the end just to write something simple suggesting he/she seek help from an adult. By that time you'd removed it and I decided there was no point bringing it back, I might as well just reply on the talk page. Now that Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism/Bug ID 9213 has been fixed, it's most anons should notice messages on their talk page, provided they don't change IP. My personal opinion is that it's best if someone responds in some way, when someone, particularly a child, suggests they're having significant personal problems. And if you're not willing or not sure how to respond just post it somewhere like the AN/I. But those sort of messages can sometimes be magnets for people who like to make a joke of it so there's no harm in removing it (but it isn't essential either). I've seen one or two messages like the one you removed on the WP:RD before and there's at least one case somewhere else where someone sounded suicidal that I recall. I think in the suicide case there was a lengthy discussion without any real consensus on what to do. I just came across Wikipedia:Potentially suicidal users which provides some pointers. Of course the message didn't sound anywhere nearly as serious but I think some of the details apply (obviously stuff like contacting local authorities or the foundation isn't necessary). Nil Einne (talk) 17:35, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's not a million miles off of what I was thinking (the part about people making fun of him). BTW, I think you should respond to the fellows a couple blocks up, I think you'd make a good admin pal, if it goes to WP:RfA you've got my vote, you're work on the Main Page alone justifies it. ~Ferdia O'Brien (T)/(C) 09:39, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]- Even though I've asked for a standard on food packaging, your search strategy (Botulinum) and its subsequent results are nonetheless very helpful. Thank you very much. I would still be open to any other findings on food packaging standards, but for now this helps a great deal. [edit]we made a list here of all the IPs, what can be done at ABREP? can they block the whole company that is doing the vandalism or what? Ctjf83talk 21:23, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Since this is coming from Telstra the largest Australian ISP, it is unlikely it will be blocked. What can be done via ABREP is the list of IPs, diffs and times can be compiled and this submitted as evidence to Telstra's abuse department. The actions of this person in repeatedly vandalising wikipedia in violation of our policies probably violate Telstra's terms of service so they will be entitled to warn or even remove his/her service. Whether they will actually do anything is a different matter. I don't know if abuse reports have ever been sent to Telstra. AFAIK, we tend to have the most success with schools and the like but a large Australian ISP is probably worth chasing up on. In any case, as it stands the list you have is probably good enough to be listed at Wikipedia:Abuse reports. However as I mentioned I think there are too many cases and not enough volunteers so the case may not necessarily get dealt with for a while if at all. You may want to read Wikipedia:Abuse reports/Guide to abuse reports to work out how to deal with it yourself (although still go thru ABREP just handle it yourself from there is best). - Sorry, I'm impatiant :( Anyway, so I just e-mail the IP and link them to our abuse report page? Do IPs really do anything about this? I would think they wouldn't care about stuff like that, and are far to busy for it. Is that all we can do from a wiki standpoint? Ctjf83talk 18:59, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

You have me mistaken. I did not make those edits. I am on a public domain belonging to a public university. The only edits I made were on military articles, and those edits are completely valid and were made utilizing my experience from the USS Ronald Reagan. I don't know how this confusion of identity could be solved better. If you could enlighten me, I would be in your debt.

re Your images
[edit]Thank you for your comments. The point of the photograph was to illustrate the tilt wing vertical flight, the CL-84 being the first successful aircraft of this type.
To the best of my knowledge, there are no other photos of the CL-89 in flight. I could have produce a drawing of the latter, could not have guaranteed the dimensions.
I am trying to get Bombardier to release the photos from copyright in the low definition form.

Everyman's Encyclopedia
[edit]In your non free book cover tag you state that the publisher is Alfred A Knopf. This may be true of Everyman's Encyclopedia published in the USA. However the copy that was scanned was an original UK published version & consequently the copyright is held by Weidenfeld and Nicolson or the descendants of J M Dent. In other aspects the tag is correct

[edit]Hi. Can I get some advice, please? Am I going overboard on Flag of Armenia? I consider the copyright thing quite important, but Crzycheetah seems to be struggling to see where I'm coming from and I'm starting to wonder if I'm making a fuss over nothing.
