Editing News #1—July 2019

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Did you know?

Did you know that you can use the visual editor on a mobile device?

Every article has a pencil icon at the top. Tap on the pencil icon to start editing.

Edit Cards

Toolbar with menu opened

This is what the new Edit Cards for editing links in the mobile visual editor look like. You can try the prototype here: 📲 Try Edit Cards.

Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?

If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.

Follow these instructions and share your experience:

📲 Try Edit Cards.

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

Learning more

The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

pending edit reviews at Napoleon III

Hi - a polite comment regarding your pending edit reviews at Napoleon III. This anonymous IP has been trying to add material repeatedly to the article. The material falls short for multiple reasons, including WP:NOR, WP:NOTESSAY, WP:INCITE. Multiple other pending review editors (including myself) have rejected the material, but twice 1 2 (as far as I can see) you have approved the addition of material from that IP. From looking at the talk page contributions, the IP editor does not seem to be showing much willingness to collaborate or attempt to modify the material to better respect policy. I rolled back the last edit from the IP (which you approved), but if you feel the material is worthwhile including, I would suggest discussing on the article's talk page.--Goldsztajn (talk) 09:43, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

@Goldsztajn: ok. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 09:44, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Mullingar Page

I was updating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullingar with recent links to community resources which you have reverted. Links are for the most part non profit and community based. Please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tullamore which has similar useful links. Please advise on how these and others should be added as I want to bring this page up to date.

@Mullingar1972: the external links on Tullamore don't have anything related to jobs. They are for the architecture of the place. Please see WP:External links. Thanks! Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 01:01, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Your opinion?

I hope it’s not too much to ask, but I’m pretty badly stuck on this pending change. [1] and wanted your input on it. James-the-Charizard (talk) 02:06, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

@James-the-Charizard: I was also stuck on it. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 02:08, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
@Nigos: The third change troubles me, not because it’s a bad edit, but because it causes me to be stuck. Does that cement it as a good edit, or is this still debatable ground? James-the-Charizard (talk) 02:11, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
@James-the-Charizard: I think we should just leave it for now, as I don’t know what to do with that edit. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 03:55, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Definitely. James-the-Charizard (talk) 04:00, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Precession

Dear Nigos, Would be fine if I make another user and write my contribution like that? then will not be self-citation :) Peter

Peter.hantz, that would technically be meatpuppetry. Thanks! Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 11:55, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

OK. If you delete it again, I will find another solution. I have the impression that does not worth to be honest with some editors.

delete what? Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 12:05, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Actually WP:sockpuppetry if it's the same person... I've posted a 3R warning on his user page too, seems to be a real problem editor Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:27, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Ok. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 23:28, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Day of the year

Hi. It's multiple IPs vandalizing these articles, but I suspect they are the same person. What do I do? --PuzzledvegetableIs it teatime already? 00:18, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

I think the IPs need to be blocked. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 00:18, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Where do we report this? --PuzzledvegetableIs it teatime already? 00:19, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
WP:VIP or WP:AN. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 00:22, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Can't catch a break tonight, I see. Do we need to report each one manually? --PuzzledvegetableIs it teatime already? 00:39, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Use WP:TW. It's easier. Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 00:39, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
I have Twinkle activated. What exactly should I be doing with it? --PuzzledvegetableIs it teatime already? 00:51, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Click the ARV button in its drop-down menu (labelled TW). Nigos (t@lk Contribs) 00:52, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for all of your help. I never used the ARV button before and didn’t even know what it did. --PuzzledvegetableIs it teatime already? 01:29, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

"Don't remove references to racism. It is a racist phrase."

"Don't remove references to racism. It is a racist phrase."

Then why don't we see any references to racism in articles on Caucasoid or Mongoloid? It has been established that these terms are legitimate and without racist connotations in the scientific fields of forensic anthropology and biological classification. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.164.182.204 (talk) 05:44, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

But the 3rd term has racist connotations. Nigos (talk Contribs) 05:50, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
