FACR
[edit]Nichalp/Archive64, you posted at one or more of the recent discussions of short FAs. There's now a proposal to change the featured article criteria that attempts to address this. - Thanks for the comments re: nomination. I was just discussing the style and format with another editor as it happens. Regarding the close, it's allways struck me that there seems no point hanging out to the bitter end when consensus has obviously come through. In particular when the number of additional comments starts rapidly dropping (as is common in clear cut RFA's) towards the last 12 hours or so, it's good to have 'crat discretion in just going ahead and flipping the switch. We can start getting some productive admin actions that bit sooner :) Pedro : Chat 14:13, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

A-class status for History of Mumbai
[edit]Are you sure the article deserves an A-class rating. Huge sections like the British period and Post-independence period are unsourced. Well strong referencing is a requisite for A-class articles. Morever, the article is nowhere near a FA-class article. KensplanetTalkContributions 13:23, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Maps of districts in India
[edit]Hi,
I'm at the moment working on creating articles for all the districts in India in the Norwegian (bokmål) Wikipedia. There are a distinct lack of proper location maps on commons for these, but the nice maps in the c:Category:WikiProject India Maps category could be useful. Great maps, thanks. I tried to create a map for test purpose, (uploaded to the no-wp, where I will delete it again shortly,) and used in the no:Saharanpur (distrikt) article. It was easy to change the colour of that district, and I might do that to the rest of the districts as I go. There are a couple of things I would like to coordinate with you if I should continue it.
- Is the result too small?
- Naming scheme? I could envision something like Locator Map <district name> (<state name>).svg
- Colour scheme? I Obviously imagine a black district within the current colour scheme of the states.
- Any thoughts? Haros (talk) 14:35, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- I created the maps - See commons:Category:Locator maps of districts of Uttar Pradesh. Let me know if you have any comments. Thanks for a great base to create new maps from. Haros (talk) 21:18, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- Now I have created and used the maps for Uttar Pradesh. I think they work ok in the artickles. I intend to create similar stub artickles for the districts in the rest of the indian states as well, and there are several were I see the need to create similar maps. Haros (talk) 22:58, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Saw your message, don't worry about the delay. I have made articles for all the districts in 3 of the Indian states, see no:Kategori:Distrikter i India and the sub-categories. I base my articles on the data from the census in 2001, e.g. the data for Ganganagar. It is reasonably easy to do. The maps are easy to do too, about 10-15 keystrokes each to create them. Most of the work is in locating which is which of the districts. They are not identified within the file, although the state is. (I use emacs to change the file, thus I see the details.)
The censusindia files are adressed as datasheet-xxyy.pdf with xx for state and yy for district. Good information that is not utilized completely in the English articles I believe. I believe that is the statistical information you ask for in the discussion.
Actually I think the maps work, although I would have wanted some like the Orissa one as a start also for the other states. Our coverage of India is far to poor, and I want to have this completed before we pass 200,000, thus I'm not prepared to sit and wait. If I find some districts you are missing from the cencus site, I will let you know. Haros (talk) 19:14, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Khichun
[edit]Dear Nichalp,
You must have read the article on Demoiselle Crane of Khichan in today's front page of the Times of India. I could not locate any nice photo of the cranes in a a very large flock similar to the one printed in the news paper. May I therefore request you to find one on the flicker (I don't know how to upload from a flicker site) and post it on the artcile.--Nvvchar (talk) 15:20, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Can you add any references to this article? On first glance it looked like a hoax (and I couldn't find any refs verifying the group's existence), but I assume if you created it it's probably okay...? Are there any alternate spellings of this group name that might yield more refs? Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:36, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Districts in Madhya Pradesh
[edit]There are two districts in Madhya Pradesh that I have found that are problematic. Anuppur and Ashoknagar. Both are present in the list of districts at http://districts.nic.in/disdetails.asp?sc=mp. Both have web-pages as districts. Only one of these are present in your list. Neither are present in the maps I'm able to find, e.g. http://india.gov.in/maps/madhya.php. At least the second is not present as a district in your svg India map. According to the wp article on Ashoknagar, it was split from Guna. According to the Anuppur article it was split from Shahdol.
Neither of the two are included among the data sheets I find at cansusindia.gov.in http://www.censusindia.gov.in/Dist_File/datasheet-2301.pdf to http://www.censusindia.gov.in/Dist_File/datasheet-2345.pdf. As one of these were created in 2003 I would not expect there to be data on that one anyway.
Perhaps it is necessary to update the svg map of India. (I would then have to update the district maps I just completed too.) Your list should also be updated to include Anuppur.
Regarding the district maps, as the one you pointed to of Orissa, they lack an overview of where the state is within India. That I judge to be necessary information for Norwegian readers. You rely on an extremely complicated template to overlay the India map. That template is too complicated for me to want to reuse the overlay part in our own template for the infobox I use. Thus it is easier for me to create the individual maps. The 95% of that work is anyway locating which district is which, and that I would need to do anyway. Haros (talk) 01:08, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Forks?
[edit]Hi Nichalp, I noticed your reply on Talk:India to the post about Hindustan. There seem to be similar problems with the British Raj article (which is India (1858-1947). In particular, in mid-August, an editor removed the redirect of British India—a collective term for those regions of the Raj directly governed by the British, in contrast to the Princely States—to the British Raj and began to edit it as a standalone page. This is now the subject of an RfC on Talk:British India. Similarly, Undivided India, a term, used in post-1947 India for its pre-1947 antecedent, is also apparently being edited as an independent page (see Talk:Undivided India). Would you like to weigh in on those talk pages? Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 18:50, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- I may have misspoken on the Talk:British India page in my last post. In the RfC (which has been going on for so long that I forgot what my original position was!), I had supported making "British India" into the following dab page: British India (disambiguation), not redirecting it to the pre-existing dab page British rule in India, although I am not averse to the latter option either. Notice in the references in this British India (disambiguation) page, that the term "British India" was (and still is) used for the regions of India governed by the EIC. If you are concerned about whether we can call it "British," since it was governed only by the Company, I will post something more here soon. Essentially, after the Act of 1773, the Company only managed any territory it acquired (or already had acquired) in the name of the British Crown. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:25, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- Here are some references. I don't know though if I have understood your question correctly.
And... a lot was being discussed on Talk:Indies regarding a dozen or so forks. If possible, would you take a look? So far there have been a lot of stalling maneuvers and confusion, rather than solutions. May be this mess needs an expert eye. Aditya(talk • contribs) 12:11, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, Nichalp, for you input on Talk:British India. I have a question or two, but I will ask them on that page. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 14:24, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

what you wrote re: Colin Angus edits
[edit]Okay, my friend. You say that I need to cite valid sources? I am a valid source. My name is Tim Harvey. I accompanied Colin Angus on his journey. Or, he accompanied me on mine. However you want to state it. My website is www.vancouvertovancouver.com. I have written countless newspaper, magazine articles and essays and chapters included in books, and I have my own book on the way, release 2009. You can email me at timjtharvey@yahoo.ca if you want to verify my identity. You will see that this corresponds to the contact information on my website.
I repeat, I am every bit as valid a source as Angus, and more so, because I'm telling the truth. I have no ax to grind, although he portrays it that way as a defense against the truth. He will stop at nothing to conceal the truth, as his vested interest is a career built upon the lie that 1) his journey was a circumnavigation (which anyone with a basic understanding of geometry and the English language can see that it was not, and 2)that it was entirely human powered.
If I tell you that he and I sailed on the Bering Sea, who are you, my friend, to tell me that I need to seek an authority?! I was there. Do I need to publish chapters of my upcoming book online for all to read? Is Colin Angus' lie, simply because it was published in book form, a higher authority of the truth?
I encourage you to respond to this. Colin Angus' claims rest upon the fact that nobody was in Siberia or on the Bering Sea to refute him, except for me. If Peary had claimed to have made it to the North Pole, but his sole travelling companion had said "no, I'm afraid he is lying" then would you accept Peary's claim? Or would you say "well, clearly he has a lot to gain by lying, and unfortunately his claim is refuted by the only witness to events, so I'm afraid it cannot be accepted."
Look, my friend. By suffering through the freezing cold of Siberia and almost perishing on the Bering Sea, I must say that regardless of your opinions on the matter, the unassailable truth is that I have earned my authority on this matter the hard way, in fact, the only way, and it is sheer and utter arrogance on your part to doubt me, knowing who I am. Which granted, you did not, before. But it is coming from the horse's mouth, my friend, so I encourage you acknowledge the truth accordingly.
The burden of truth falls upon Colin Angus and he can't prove a thing. Do I need to publish a contemporaneous report that surfaced in the Nome Nugget that reported us having sailed? I could at any time. Similarly, the whole crew of the ship Professor Khromov saw the remains of a sailing apparatus on our decks. But I will not be pressured by the likes of those who gobble up whatever Colin Angus claims into making a case; I will simply state the truth as it is, knowing that the truth always prevails in the end, despite the legions of people such as yourself who may resist it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.2.227.195 (talk) 21:30, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
furthermore
[edit]I will not even comment upon your arrogant statement that I, the world's only holder of the truth, the single most authoritative voice concerning the details of the expedition in question, the first ten months of which Colin Angus travelled at my side (shared a tent, a canoe, a rowboat, and all his nefarious secrets, etc), aside from the months he left Chukotka for his cock operation, that I of all people should have his editing privileges removed.
It is you who should be banished from wikipedia altogether for so mindlessly following the herd to feast upon half-truths and lies and then regurgitating them for all the world to read, and having the audacity to threaten a gag order upon somebody who, unlike you, knows what it is like to row through storms in the night and raise a sail and then watch his former expedition partner carry on with a campaign of lies.
So, where do you stand now, my friend? Do tell. And please don't amuse me with objections. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.2.227.195 (talk) 21:37, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

commented on your comment
[edit]Thanks. All I ask is that this phrase be removed, because it is not true: "Colin Angus is a Canadian author and adventurer who is the first person to make a self-propelled global circumnavigation". I don't know what the source is, although I could probably find a number of them. They are all mistaken, because he was neither entirely human-powered, nor was it a circumnavigation. This Wikipedia entry makes it seem like the only question at stake is the definition of circumnavigation. I would cease to take an interest in correcting the fallacies of this website if my edit were allowed to stand, which is, essentially, that "Colin Angus is a Canadian author and adventurer who ***claims*** to be the first person..." Further to that, it would also be in the interests of accuracy to acknowledge the nature of the controversy, which touches not only upon the definition of circumnavigation, but also on the question of human power. At the very least, however, the first statement of the entry should not stand. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Galiano kayaker (talk • contribs) 19:51, 4 November 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Galiano kayaker (talk • contribs)
