[edit]Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. [1] MrOllie (talk) 23:03, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- What would be a proper way to update net worth figures for politicians? There appear to be many which are out of data, as OpenSecrets hasn't released new estimates since 2018.
- There are live estimates from Quiver which could be used - is there a better way to source them than linking to the tracker? Net worth estimates live (talk) 00:16, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- It is a self published site and shows no sign of meeting Wikipedia's sourcing requirements (see WP:RS). 100% of your accounts activity is adding this site. Are you associated with it in some fashion? MrOllie (talk) 00:24, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- I built out the live politician net worth tracking on Quiver, because of pages like the "Congress members by wealth" wiki that haven’t been updated since 2018.
- It’s public data, so there isn’t much room for personal bias in the estimates. But as far as I know, no one else calculates regular net worth estimates for all members of Congress.
- Would it be reasonable to at least update the "Congress members by wealth" page to the start of 2024?
- Using numbers from the beginning of the year would mean that it aligns exactly with the financial disclosure forms, removing any room for error in calculating live estimates from stock price movements.
- I hope you’re aware that my motivation isn’t self-promotional, it just bothers me to see net worth estimates that are so far off, when more recent data is available.
- I don’t know Wikipedia’s exact guidelines, but I would think that Quiver would hold up as a reputable source under independent review. It has been used as a source by well-known outlets like The Washington Post and Financial Times.
- The accuracy of the estimates could also easily be verified using the public disclosure database. Net worth estimates live (talk) 12:06, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Please have a read of WP:COI and WP:PAID, you have been in violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. Quiver definitely does not meet Wikipedia's sourcing guidelines, which I have already linked above. Kindly do not add links or mentions of Quiver again. MrOllie (talk) 12:27, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Do you mind letting me know which sourcing guidelines it does not meet?
- Ideally, I'd like for others to be able to update the information. Net worth estimates live (talk) 12:33, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- The ones I mentioned above. MrOllie (talk) 12:40, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- Any part of that in particular?
- I see this section, which seems to be an argument in favor of Quiver as a reputable source, given that it has been cited by well-established news organizations:
- "How accepted and high-quality reliable sources use a given source provides evidence, positive or negative, for its reliability and reputation. The more widespread and consistent this use is, the stronger the evidence. For example, widespread citation without comment for facts is evidence of a source's reputation and reliability for similar facts, whereas widespread doubts about reliability weigh against it. - I decline to repeat myself further. It is quite common that COI editors will seize on particular segments of policy and disregard the more relevant ones that would prevent their additions - this kind of motivated reasoning is a large factor in why COI editors are not supposed to be adding links to their websites. MrOllie (talk) 12:57, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- What are the more relevant segments of policy I am missing out on?
- COI is irrelevant, when I'm wondering what Quiver is lacking that would make it a reputable source for OTHERS to use in the future. Net worth estimates live (talk) 13:04, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
