Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Happy editing! Cheers, 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 17:46, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm Isabelle Belato. I wanted to let you know that I removed one or more external links you added to Zoe Empowers because they seemed inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you. Isabelle 🏳‍🌈 17:44, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much, Isabelle. We appreciate your help as we continue to try to figure out links. We'll look at the guidelines about links. Sincerely, nama Namamacs (talk) 17:51, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain your use of the first person plural. Is more than one person using this account? 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 21:01, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your question, Timtrent. I am the only user on this account, but I do show my husband some of the edits I make. Also, for the 46 years we've been married, we've shown each other our writing efforts more often than not. We are both retired...teacher and professor. So, I either had had a conversation with him and used "we" or I slipped back into academic language I used when writing as an academic and used "we"
I hope that explains my use of the first person plural.
Nama Namamacs (talk) 21:47, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It is wise to avoid plurals. We have a firm rule of one person one account 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 22:13, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Namamacs. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. ProClasher97 ~ Have A Question? 17:54, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question, ProClasher97. I do not think I have a conflict of interest. And I am not employed and do not receive compensation from anyone other than the 2 states where I taught for many years. Yes, I am greatly interested in, even compassionate about, organizations that are assisting the poorest of the poor, the orphans and vulnerable children, especially those in third-world countries. My husband and I heard about Zoe Empowers through our church and are impressed by their method. (My husband is a retired sociologist who served in the Peace Corps in the late 1960's.) We have donated to their program as we have donated to Care International and other such groups. Also, we donate to our church, especially to the building of the new children's wing. I have taught Sunday school and have volunteered as a Girl Scout as well as a Cub Scout leader. So, I am looking forward to more editing and writing for Wikipedia in this area. I just spent some time adding to the Wikipedia article Orphan and Vulnerable Children, and i hope that was an improvement. I hope this answers your question. i certainly will look at the material you have referenced here. I hope I am on my way to being a good Wikipedian! Thank you! Nama. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Zoe Empowers, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. MaxnaCarta (talk) 10:07, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

MaxnaCarta,
Good morning. You are right, MaxnaCarta. As I read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia FAQ regarding Organizations, I see I need to rewrite the article to be encyclopedic and not promote the organization. I appreciate and thank you for helping me understand and protect the integrity of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is the first place I look when I want unbiased information on a topic, and I want to help and NOT harm. (For example, I searched Wikipedia for the new-to-me phrase "drop bears." That reminded me of "jackalope" so I searched Wikipedia for that.)
This is my first article, my first attempt to participate in Wikipedia as an article writer. And I want to go up the learning curve on encyclopedic writing.
Yes, I will begin right away to remove the promotional material and make the article encyclopedic. Perhaps I need to read Wikipedia articles about similar organizations such as Care International, Keep a Child Alive, and others. Does this sound correct to you?
Will you please help me retrieve the article, so I have an opportunity to rewrite this?
Please advise. I sincerely appreciate your help with this.

@Namamacs Might I suggest that you start by using the process at WP:AFC. I am not sure whether you did this previously or not, but I do know the review process to be both iterative and extremely helpful. Reading HELP:YFA will also be of benefit.
I see the article has been speedily deleted. It was advertorial to a great extent. Starting from scratch will be useful. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 19:56, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Timtrent,
Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I appreciate your suggestion to start by using the WP:AFC. I did not do this previously, so I will start from scratch to do this. Yes, I read HELP:YFA, but I'm sure I will now read it again with new eyes. I did not realize the article was so advertorial, and I sincerely appreciate your information. You are kind to support new Wikipedians. (I like your Ukranian flags!)
Namamacs Namamacs (talk) 20:09, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I support people who have the interest in listening to ways they can become better, and who work to put that into practice.
AFC can be slow sometimes, but it provides excellence of feedback from experienced editors who have chosen to review drafts. Our role as reviewers is to seek to ensure that an article will not immediately be subject to one of our deletion processes when it is accepted. That is why we push it back to the author. We want to accept articles.
Advertising is judged by many things, ranging from wording, not always obvious wording, to paucity of references or quality of references..
We require references from significant coverage about the topic of the article, and independent of it, in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS please. See WP:42. Please also see WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources and WP:SELFPUB which has clear limitations on self published sources. Providing sufficient references, ideally one per fact referred to, that meet these tough criteria is likely to allow an article to remain or a draft to be accepted. Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that the topic is not suitable for inclusion, certainly today.

You may find this essay useful. It is one of many that help new editors create articles close simply and easily. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 20:28, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You have an obvious conflict of interest and you must declare it. If you work directly or indirectly for an organisation, or otherwise are acting on its behalf, you are very strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. If you are paid directly or indirectly by the organisation you are writing about, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at Jimfbleak. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Namamacs|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If you are being compensated, please provide the required disclosure. Note that editing with a COI is discouraged, but permitted as long as it is declared. Concealing a COI can lead to a block. Please do not edit further until you respond to this message. Also read the following regarding writing an article:

  • you must provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that it meets the notability guidelines. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to the organisation or company, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, logs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what the company or organisation claims or interviewing its management. Note that references should be in-line so we can tell what fact each is supporting, and should not be bare urls
Many of your sources appear to be just press releases, written by, or quoting the organisation, or primary sources ⋅rather than being genuine independent third-party sources
  • The notability guidelines for organisations and companies have been updated. The primary criteria has five components that must be evaluated separately and independently to determine if it is met:
  1. significant coverage in
  2. independent,
  3. multiple,
  4. reliable,
  5. secondary sources.
Note that an individual source must meet all four criteria to be counted towards notability.
Your article starts of as a promo for the organisation, but that text doesn't say where it is based, what staffing and organisation it has, or its expenditure.
  • You must write in a non-promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic, with verifiable facts, not opinions or reviews.
sentences like Zoe Empowers is Holistic and Comprehensive. ZOE Empowers works on all the challenges that keep children in extreme poverty, often all at the same time are fact-free promo
  • There shouldn't be any url links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections.
  • You must not copy text from elsewhere. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. We require that text posted here can be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial; text is considered to be copyright unless explicitly stated otherwise. There are ways to donate copyrighted text to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient.
I didn't check for copyright violation.
  • Not reasons for deletion, but a few of your refs were bare urls, and some headings incorrectly capitalised.
Jimfbleak,
I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to reply to me and to explain why the article I submitted was deleted.  Thank you!
Reading the notability guidelines you referenced was very helpful.  I will try again to find multiple notable sources for the article, but I think they may not exist yet.  So, I plan to put this article aside for now.
This is my conflict of interest that I sent to ProClasher97 after I submitted the article.

To answer your questions, Jimfbleak about COI…
I am not paid directly or indirectly by Zoe Empowers or by any organization nor do I work on behalf of anyone or any organization.  I am retired and receive a pension.
Yes, I agree I am greatly interested in assisting the poorest of the poor, the orphaned and vulnerable children, especially those in third-world countries.  I (and my husband) have donated to the Zoe Empowers organization and believe the work they do is vitally important.  I (and my husband) have donated to Care International, to the new children’s wing built recently by our church, and to other organizations.  I have spent my life working with children as an elementary school teacher, Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.
I (and my husband) heard about the Zoe Empowers program in 2008 through our church and were greatly impressed by their method. (My husband is a retired sociologist who served in the Peace Corps in the late 1960's.)  At the time, my husband recalled that in graduate school he had studied about such a comprehensive method, but this was the first time he heard of this method actually used in practice.
I (and my husband) learned all we could about the method and have been interested in other agencies that work with such children.  I have read such books as Dead Aid and Helping Without Hurting, and I think the Zoe Empowers program is more effective than other programs that address child poverty.  I wanted them to have a presence on Wikipedia like other similar agencies have.  So, I did research for several months and wrote an article about Zoe Empowers.
Again, I thank you for your attention to the deletion of this article.  I understand it is vitally important for everyone to follow the guidelines and to protect the integrity of Wikipedia.
Namamacs
P.S. Recently, I added to the Wikipedia article Orphan and Vulnerable Children, and I hope that was acceptable. Namamacs (talk) 17:16, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
