The recent edit you made to Marc H. Tanenbaum has been reverted, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. At least some of the text you added appears to come from A Prophet For Our Time by Marc H. Tanenbaum. Dori ❦ (TalkContribsReview) ❦ 01:38, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

June 2009

[edit]

I have again reverted your changes to Marc H. Tanenbaum, as they once again introduced copyright violations into Wikipedia. You can't just drop entire paragraphs from a biographical essay into an article wholesale just by adding a couple of footnotes to the book. Please read up on Wikipedia's copyright policies—and you might want to take a look at its policies on conflict of interest at the same time, as well. Dori: I am a first time editor to wikipedia so I apologize for not understanding how to add information or what to do here! I work for the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding and was trying to edit and add to the wikipedia page for our namesake, Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum. The information I tried to add comes from a book copyrighted to the Tanenbaum Center and a biographical sketch written by one of our staff members. How can I legally post the information? Does it need to be re-written? paraphrased? HELP! Tanenbaum (talk) 15:42, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am neither a lawyer nor an official Wikipedia representative, so don't take what I say as the final answer, but I'd start by reading Wikipedia's policy articles on copyrights and copyright violations, its FAQs on copyright and organizations, and the essay on best practices for editors with conflicts of interest.
In short, as I understand it: you can't, or at least shouldn't.
That's assuming that the Center doesn't want to give up its copyright, which I figure is a reasonable assumption given that you're talking about paraphrasing it. However, even close paraphrasing isn't allowed, as that's enough to count as a copyright violation.
And then I strongly recommend reading the username policy. Given your username, you probably shouldn't be editing the article at all.
Sorry; I know that isn't what you wanted to hear. If you have further questions, the best place to ask them is probably the conflict of interest noticeboard. Dori ❦ (TalkContribsReview) ❦ 22:17, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Because Wikipedia does not allow any form of spam or other promotion of people, products, companies or other groups (even non-commercial or charitable ones). Wikipedia's use for such purposes will result in the blocking of the account involved. Please read Wikipedia:FAQ/Organization and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for our rules about this.

In addition, user accounts are for individuals only, not for companies or groups or other collective editing. Your username should reflect this. Usernames that appear to be promotional (such as those that make reference to a company or product) violate our username policy and are typically blocked to enforce that policy.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this message box.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Tell us what new username you want to use. Please make sure that your new username does not violate our username policy and check that it has not already been taken (click here to search).
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If instead you believe that you have been blocked by mistake (i.e., you have not in fact been using Wikipedia for promotional purposes), please write {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this message box and replace the text "Your reason here" with the reason why. See also Wikipedia:Appealing a block for more information.

{{unblock|First of all I would like the new user name “NYC Grad” and I was wondering if I could change the email too. I am brand new to wikipedia so I apologize for not knowing the rules and starting off on the wrong foot. I believe I should be unblocked for a few reasons. 1) Despite my internship at the Tanenbaum Center I have both reliable and verifiable knowledge to give to wikipedia. 2) Specifically, I am capable of improving the quality of the writing, information and citations on the Rabbi Marc H Tanenbaum page especially know that it has been tagged as a possible copyright violation. The information in need of citations now and the info I wanted to add is copyrighted and I have been given permission so use it in an email from the publsiheers. However, I am waiting for a more official wikipedia consent form to be emailed back to me from the publishers so I can email it in to wikipedia for approval. This would make the copyright problem no longer an issue. My previous edits were not and my future edits would not be about advocating for my place of employment but about expanding the biography of Rabbi Tanenbaum to include more accurate and interesting information about his life. It is not spam nor is it promotional pandering for the Tanenbaum Center which is a non-profit organizarion. This is an account for one person, not a group, and I made a mistake in making my username affiliated with my place of employment. So please unblock me so that I can learn more about being a wikipedia editor and add useful information that promotes wikipedia’s goal of being an informative and reliable encyclopedia.}}

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing name change to NYC Grad (talk · contribs); please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username. Based on what you are saying I don't think you have a substantial conflict of interest in the editing you were doing, so long as the Tanenbaum Center isn't asking you to do this editing, so that's okay. However, it seems like you copied or closely paraphrased text from [1]; please do not submit work that is not your own.
