TS Review

[edit]

To Dwaipayanc, Xyzzy n, Wouterstomp, Wikipedical, TimVickers, Arcadian, NCurse, TedE, Jkelly: to all who have helped me develop the article Tourette syndrome, I was hoping you'd have a new look. Jkelly has checked the images, I've asked Tony to do a thorough copyedit to polish the prose when he has time, and I've completed the referencing and expanded the Screening section. I think I've done all I'm capable of, and would appreciate any new input you may have. Sandy 23:58, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MEDGEN

[edit]

Great - I will continue to classify. GA status would be good - I have classified some articles as A when they should really be GA.

About project participants - we should have a category of MEDGENP participants for member pages. --apers0n 14:54, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Medical genetics articles by quality assessment table bot is working well. I thought I would notify MEDGENP participants on their user pages to encourage more reviews. --apers0n 18:59, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is what I am going to put on the user page of MEDGENP participants:

Medical Genetics Wikiproject article assesment

One of the tasks of the WP:MEDGENP is to assess all unrated articles listed on the article rating page so that the quality of the articles within the scope of the project can be seen at a glance. This was previously updated only manually, but now the ratings are also harvested daily by a bot and the results posted here, with significant changes from the previous rating listed here. If you would like to assess an article relating to genetic disorders you can add the relevant template to the article talk page, which will add the article to the relevant category and will be monitored by the bot.

A new assessment category {{GA-Class}} (Good Article) has been added for articles that have been assessed as a Good Article.

There is also a new category Category:Acquired genetic disorders for genetic disorders that are not inherited. Please add this category to any articles you think may qualify.

If you are registered to use the AutoWikiBrowser (AWB) (requires Windows 2000/XP + .NET framework v.2) there is a Wikipedia Assessments plugin that is designed to make the assessment process faster and easier (about the plugin / user guide). It has an assessments mode, for reviewing articles, and a talk page tagging mode for reviewing articles. Users with more than 500 mainspace edits can register to use the AWB --apers0n 08:18, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a message on Skype. --apers0n 13:48, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I saw you added it to the top of the page here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medical_Genetics/Article_rating. I have emailed you my Skype name, you can add me to your contacts.

September Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

First off, apologies if I've already sent you a message like this- I though I had, but taking a look at your talk archives doesn't reveal it immediately but I may be wrong.

As you already have a lot of experience, could you please let me know what sort of things you are hoping to get out of the admin coaching programme? This will help me assign the right coaches to you. Please reply on my talk page. Thanks, Petros471 21:26, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about Steel359 and I give you some help with that then. I suggest setting up an admin coaching subpage to keep discussion together, such as User:NCurse/Admin coaching. Petros471 21:12, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. -- Steel 21:20, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be perfect for me. In that subpage, should I write everything of myself and the problematic fields, questions, or you read my user page and try to show me important functions. Backlogs, deletion tools. NCurse work 07:01, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At any time feel free to ask questions. I've posted a deletion exercise to see how you get on with that, if you find it helpful we can try other ones (for various areas of deletion, RC patrol etc.) Also I'll probably ask you a few questions later about the role of an admin, but I suspect you have a very good idea of that already being one on other projects. I'll generally try and keep admin coaching stuff on the subpage (easier to keep it together), but please do drop me a short note on my talk page when there is something there that I need to look at, as pages can slip off my very long watchlist before I see them. Cheers, Petros471 22:27, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted to say that I haven't forgotten about your admin coaching, I'm just rather busy in real life at the moment! I'll get to it asap (probably next week). Petros471 08:24, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've just started university so I'm also pretty busy. My internet/computer has been playing up a bit as well so don't be surprised if I disappear for days on end without notice. -- Steel 17:30, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As your RFA seems to be going fine, I don't think you need the full admin coaching program. How about you just ask Steel or me (or any other admin you respect) for help with anything you need in particular. Petros471 20:21, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since Tourette syndrome is on the Portal:Medicine, can you help me watch for vandalism (inevitable) and speculative, unsourced insertions? Thanks - I know you're in a later time zone than I am, and will need lots of eyes to prevent coprolalia jokes. Sandy 03:16, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I stayed up late cleaning up the footnotes on Chagas disease, as I'm so alarmed by the lack of referencing in featured articles. Night, thanks ! Sandy 05:07, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ooops - looks like I haven't checked the page for a while, and didn't respond to any queries. How rude of me.

Anyway, I do agree with your comments about the referencing being a bit patchy, but if you look past that the article is utter class. The personal stats section, I feel, is quite important. I think maybe we should add references to his autobiographies (It's not about the bike and Every second Counts - two great reads). Other than that and a google search, I couldn't think of other places to do some proper research. Still, I am sure it's up to GA status. Thanks! Kingfisherswift 16:47, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TS vandalism revert

[edit]

Thanks ! They are becoming less and less frequent, and much easier to deal with, since there are now so many eyes watching. Sandy 17:11, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that last night's vandalism on TS was up again: this is why I am so hesitant to nom it FAC. I fear the vandalism will go sky high if more people are aware of the article. I really don't need the star, but it concerned me when some other (unknown to me) editor nominated it GA (which I consider a useless waste of time), and then tried to FAC it on his own. I'd be happy if the article stayed in obscurity. Sandy 18:18, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lyme disease

[edit]

Hi, thanks for helping to clean up references, etc. I looked at the peer review and will try to work on some of those issues as well. Just wondering if it was necessary to remove the hyperlinks for the ILADS and IDSA websites and treatment guidelines (particularly the guidelines) and use footnotes instead? I guess it looks more consistent now, but it's no longer obvious that the published guidelines are easily available for comparison.

Also, the new footnotes for treatment guidelines are redundant with the references already there (which already include links to full text), so I'll remove them, hope that's ok. Bapb 23:37, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Banding

Unless I'm missing something in this statment "Chromosome banding is a procedure in which the chromosomes are stained to create a karyotype." This seems like an ideal thing to merge into karyotype. Vidyamandir classes

[edit]

Congratulations for your successful RfA. Now, please don't get annoyed but even if I am happy that enwiki has a new Hungarian administrator and I really admire the quality and quantity of your work @ various Wikiprojects the first thing I have to do is complaining. :(

The main topic of my complaint is your edit @ the Vidyamandir classes article with which you reverted an anonymous editor's edit and the following one with which you substed a test template @ the editor's talk page.

While I agree that its style and formatting (register, words in ALL CAPS) may not be appropriate for a serious encyclopedia like Wikipedia and its neutrality can also be questioned, but otherwise it seemed a relevant, more or less legitimate edit to me. While I understand that you're quite busy with your real life/huwiki/enwiki/huwikiquote tasks and also understand that you have to take your fair share of fighting the massive amount of vandals "working" @ enwiki, but I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed when I see legitimate editors handled like that, even if they are anonymous.

Of course I don't deem it impossible that you know this particular coaching institute well and know that there aren't any relaxing sessions during their classes or that the students don't think that "ordinary schools" are more boring than VMC, but in this case, could you please explain what was "so wrong" with that edit that made you label it "mild vandalism (test)". Thx, Adolar von Csobánka (Talk) 17:39, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eh, I didn't know that this tool does not give you the option to revert semi-automatically without warning the user. That wasn't really your fault then, but some precaution definitely won't do any harm. :) --Adolar von Csobánka (Talk) 18:56, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

56

[edit]

Could we ask your help in preparing the 56 article for FA status, specifically, interpreting the copyright status of the 56-os photos on this website [2] - there is absolutely no mention that we can find, yet they state that these are made available for download to commemorate the 1956 anniversary. emails to the website remain unanswered. Its a puzzle to the handful of editors working hard to make it to FA for 23 Oct, how to proceed. In your opinion, may we use them and if so, how should they be labeled? Any help is greatly appreciated. These are superb photos that can help this article achieve FA status on time for its anniversary (otherwise we have to wait 50 more years?). Istvan 05:39, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the guidance, regarding the proper tag - CopyrightedFreeUseProvidedThat. Could you please help us one more step? Unfortunately, this tag doesnt seem to be an option, neither in EnWiki nor in the commons. I believe that none of the really active editors of 56 is very good with graphics (I can surely speak for myself here) and I know there must be something Im not doing correctly, but cant seem to figure it out. Can you suggest precisely where (EnWiki or Commons) to put up the images, and precisely how to use the tag you suggested? (does it perhaps go by a different name on the dropdown menus? Thanks Istvan 15:58, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Their homepage states:

"The American Hungarian Federation is sponsoring the 1956 Portal to provide a resource for Hungarian American organizations across the nation to highlight and promote their 1956 Hungarian Revolution commemoration activities. The 1956 Portal serves as a central information resource for 1956 as our community prepares for this important milestone. Get involved and join us!"

at the URL - http://www.hungary1956.com/index.htm. at the bottom of the picture page, they claim to hold the copyright. I see a clear intent to provide these images for the purpose of commemorating the 1956 revolution - as we are doing. Too bad they dont answer their emails. thanks for your help! KÖSZÖNÖM SZÉPEN for helping us figure out the image license!!! It is a huge help!!!K. Lastochka 18:52, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think Istvan will be putting it up for FAC very soon, not sure exactly when. It would be great if you're evaluating the article! K. Lastochka 19:32, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear NCurse - please help again! One may interpret the AHF statement as placing a restriction on use of the images - i.e. only for "American Hungarian Organisations" (no problem) commemorating 1956 (also no problem) but this is certainly not "for any purpose". Is there some way we can alter the copyright status tag to reflect this? Its popping up now on the FAC review page and we dont want to seem like idiots. Its not a question of coypvio, but rather of the right tag. Please help!Istvan 21:08, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! right now our problem is perceived NPOV. Its quite unfair to remove language which is almost always POV yet is spot-on accurate for 56. Nobody wants to believe that Rákosi was a dictator, or that the ÁVH was detested, and nobody wants to read the UN report that states precisely those things, preferring the cozy bromides and soft weasel-fur language suited for an article about a tree frog or a train station. Some Hungarian voices stating that "hey, this was for real and denying it is fantasy" or something like that is really needed because Im afraid we're getting hammered. Not quite sure...

[edit]

...why you reverted it, I was trying to fix the broken "!!! Chronology" header. 80.41.197.117 08:25, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, what I've seen is the ! is a table seperator, but using a <nowiki> to fix it delinks it. 80.41.197.117 08:42, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've replied to it to add a note about the chronology section. :) 80.41.197.117 08:49, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your RfA

[edit]

You're welcome; you've been doing a great job with the medical articles and I was pleased to support your candidacy. I must say, though, that posting your vote tally on everyone's talk page seems unnecessary and in poor taste, in my opinion. Then again, the colored box and picture seem unnecessary as well. — Knowledge Seeker 09:03, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it has become a custom—I've seen it too—but I think it's a rather poor custom. I understand the desire to acknowledge those that didn't support you, but it seems awfully tacky to leave messages on a hundred talk pages announcing how many people voted for you. Or maybe I'm just bitter that I had less than a third of the support you got. Anyway, I realize I'm in the minority on this; it just seems like such a silly thing to do. You'll make a great administrator—I didn't mean to be so critical. — Knowledge Seeker 04:22, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay then. :P DarknessLord | T | C 12:16, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like info on uploading photos, plus any knowledge you think Wikipedians need to know. Rochelle 15:08, 10 October 2006 (UTC) Mostly I am interested in adding to pre-existing articles including but not limited to Christianity, Tolkien related material, Narnia related material, and my school's page. I am trying to figure out what all to include on it-see Park Hill South High School and give me a hint. I know a lot about the school, but I don't know what is relevant. Thank YOU!

Thank you, NCurse, for guiding me through easy-but-confusing (whirly) VP2 steps. Now lets kill the vandals!! Cheers -- Imoeng 12:58, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations!/Assistance

[edit]

Congratulations on receiving admin status! I am currently involved in a small dispute in International HapMap Project. (See User talk:Genes123#International HapMap Project for relevant discussion). A large portion of text in the article is copied directly from another website. Although this text is not copyrighted, I believe the large section of copy-and-paste violates Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not (Wikipedia is not a mirror). Would you mind offering some input, please? Thanks again! -AED 15:48, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I saw your note on User talk:Genes123#International HapMap Project. I'm pretty sure that the text is NOT copyrighted. -AED 16:52, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
NCurse, thanks for helping to resolve the dispute! -AED 21:39, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've now rewritten all the International HapMap Project page. There shouldn't be any sentence left from the website. If this is still not acceptable then I'm clueless about what should be done... -Genes123

Mistaken Point

Hi, I saw that the page on Mistaken Point incorrectly lists P Thompson as one of the discoverers. Can you please correct this. Thanks, shaileshm
