Lichens

[edit]

Hi MycoMutant: Glad you're finding lichens interesting. ;) If you decide you'd like to learn more about them, feel free to join our (tiny) lichen task force! MeegsC (talk) 08:32, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Contemplating it. I may be out of my depth on Lichens though so probably need to do some reading first. I'm finding this material far denser and harder to get through than I do with mushroom or fungi material. Then again throwing myself in like that does seem to be how I learn best. MycoMutant (talk) 11:44, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This journal article might be of interest. It's more about mushroom-producing ascomycetes, but he does mention lichens and the differentiation between bryophilous and muscicolous. Also lists several papers I'll try to find. MeegsC (talk) 14:09, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll take a look. Yeah I'm finding the term bryophilous used far more for mushroom producing fungi than for Lichens when searching for journals. I found that Lichens by Oliver Gilbert (2000) uses both terms to describe different lichen species so that might be helpful to read up on the behaviour of specific species to better gauge the meaning. It defines muscicolous as growing on moss but doesn't have bryophilous in the glossary.
For instance it describes Agonimia tristicula, Toninia lobulata and Strigula stigmatella var. alpestris as bryophilous.
And mentions some muscicolous variants of Caloplaca cerina and Caloplaca ammiospila. Endocarpon adscendens and Dermatocarpon luridum and perhaps a few others are called muscicolous. I think that might be a place to start to see if the terms are just interchangeable or have specific meaning. MycoMutant (talk) 14:33, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
According to the paper I linked to, bryophilous is the more general term (i.e. found on bryophytes) while muscicolous is more specific (i.e. found on mosses) as is hepati(ci)colous (i.e. found on liverworts). That seems like a pretty clearcut difference. MeegsC (talk) 15:55, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That would make a nice clear distinction with bryophilous being the broader description and muscicolous and hepati(ci)colous being subsets of it. There would be some logic in that. 'Hepaticicolous' doesn't turn up any results on Research Gate or JSTOR but 'hepaticolous' does so that seems to be the spelling which is used. I've not found the term used in any of the recent books on lichens I've looked at though. I'll try to look it into some more and see if definitions and accepted terms have changed since that 1997 paper and if the terminology used is different for ascomycetes broadly vs lichenized fungi specifically.
I'm finding some contradictions in the terminology used from source to source so I'll see if I can find a clear cut answer in something more recent specifically pertaining to lichens. Would be good to have one page for the generalised group with redirects to it for the subsets I think if we can confirm what the current lexicon is. MycoMutant (talk) 16:36, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Google Scholar still shows plenty of recent papers using the term: [1]

Leucocoprinus Cretaceus

[edit]

I would like to include a photo of a fungus found in Middle Tennessee on the Tennessee River. I have Leucocoprinus Cretaceus in my yard. It is not a tropical area of the United States of North America. However, we have been having tropical weather here. Everything I've read tells me it is a South American fungus of places like Peru (found this data here in Wikipedia). Shewstock (talk) 12:53, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That would be great. You can upload it to wikimedia commons and I'll take a look if you like.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard
Many of the Leucocoprinus species are indeed tropical but have a widespread distribution all over the world now due to human introduction and during the Summer months when it is hot they seem to have no problems growing outside in some of these locations. Tennessee during the Summer certainly sounds warm and humid enough for them. The page for Leucocoprinus cretaceus may need some additional details added to reflect this but I've not got around to substantially adding to that page yet.
