App to add photos

Dear User:Mx. Granger Can you make an app that will prompt a user to take a photo when near an article's location when there is no photo? If the app can add categories too, that would be great. Geraldshields11 (talk) 23:34, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

That's an interesting idea. I've never done any mobile app development, but maybe that's something that could be added to the Wikimedia Commons mobile app. That app already lets the user check for nearby locations that need pictures (and upload photos with categories), but as far as I know it doesn't notify the user when they're close to one of the locations. —Mx. Question on article "Gender Neutrality"

Dear Mx. Granger,

My name is Alex from Germany and I have a question regarding the article "Gender Neutrality" to which you also made contributions. Following passage:

"There are also cases where a distinct female form exists, but the basic (or "male") form does not intrinsically indicate a male (such as by including man), and can equally well be applied to any member of the profession, whether male or female or of unspecified sex. Examples include actor and actress; usher and usherette; comedian and comedienne. In such cases, proponents of gender-neutral language generally advocate the non-use of the distinct female form (always using comedian rather than comedienne, for example, even if the referent is known to be a woman)."

What does "such as by including man" refer to? Does this simply mean that, for example, the word "actor" does not intrinsically indicate a male in contrast to other words like "fireman" which intrinsically include "man"?

Or does the reference in the parantheses want to tell something else?

Hi Matieland, thanks for the message. I'm not sure I understand your question. Is the concern that when you click HTTPS links in Wikipedia articles, you're unable to access them? You can always copy the URL from the link, change the "https" to "http", and access the website with http – for some websites that will work, but not all. But in my opinion, links in articles should continue to use https where possible, to provide better privacy and security for readers.

If you're asking about accessing Wikipedia itself using HTTP instead of HTTPS, as far as I know this is not possible. There is some related information here and here.

Hello. It appears that this article is confusing Open House with Back-to-School Night (BTSN).

BTSN is held annually in the first few weeks of school. It is an event only open to the parents of currently enrolled children. It is an opportunity for parents to meet the teacher, learn about curriculum, standards, expectations, grading policies, and other information.

On the other hand, Open House is an annual event held sometime in the spring to showcase some of the academic learning and accomplishments of the currently enrolled students. This event is open to the students and their families. --Nancius (talk) 23:45, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

@Nancius: Thanks for the message. Your definitions of back-to-school night and open house are the same definitions that were used at my schools when I was growing up. It wouldn't surprise me if the terminology varied by region, though. Ideally the article should give a nuanced explanation of how the terms are used. At the very least, I think it should mention the term "back-to-school night" and explain the distinction you've described (ideally cited to a reliable source). Good questions. It generally takes quite a while for drafts to be reviewed – I would expect weeks or months. (Wikipedia has a limited pool of volunteers, and there are always more tasks to be done than people to do them.) I'm not sure whether the COI affects how long it takes – all the drafts go through the same reviewing process, but it's possible some reviewers might choose to focus on certain types of drafts, which would make those get through faster. —Mx. Caroline Ellison

You undid my revision describing Caroline Ellison as a fraudster, saying that "we still can't say this in wikivoice until there's a conviction." However, as you can see from the sources I cited, she has already pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges, months ago, and the judge has accepted her guilty plea, which means that she has been convicted. There is no such thing as a jury trial after a guilty plea; she (as well as Gary Wang and Nishad Singh, and unlike Sam Bankman-Fried) will go straight to sentencing. You have a point that with a guilty plea there is not the same doubt about how things will play out as there is with Bankman-Fried. WP:BLPCRIME doesn't specifically address this situation, but especially with BLPs it is best to be cautious in rigorously sticking to the sources. @MainakC24365: Thanks for the message. Yes, there's no problem with having only five sources. But keep in mind that articles need to be about notable topics, and the most common way to demonstrate notability is with significant coverage from multiple independent sources. If most of the five sources are independent reliable sources with in-depth coverage of the subject, it should be fine. But if they're mostly sources like the subject's own website or social media posts, the article might be deleted. You can find more information at Wikipedia:Notability. Just a reminder that when you tag a page for any time of deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/RFD/MFD/etc.), it's courteous to post a notification on the talk page of the page creator. I'm sure you would like to know if an article you created is headed towards deletion. It's just considered good practice. The way most editors do this is by using Twinkle to tag pages for deletion. It's an editing tool that has a lot of great uses to make editing simpler, so you don't have to remember a lot of templates. Just be sure to set your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator" and then when you tag a page for deletion, Twinkle will post a notice for you on the talk page of the page creator. Generally that should be fine. A common way to do this is to add a new comment in the same section (or start a new section) and ping all the editors who commented in the old discussion, for example using a template like Template:ping. The main guideline to be aware of is Wikipedia:Canvassing, and the main behavior to avoid is selectively asking some editors but not others based on their views. (So for instance, it's generally fine if you ping all participants from the old discussion, but you shouldn't selectively ping the participants who supported the proposal while leaving out the participants who opposed the proposal.) —Mx. I have an issue with two talk pages which have split following a page move and I was wondering whether they can be unified. Unfortunately, the very moment I was writing on the talk page, the page was moved which may have caused a split between the article name and talk page name. As far as I was aware, this could only be remedied by blanking the new talk page, in order to ensure that the article and talk page carry the same name. However, this appears to have created two talk pages, one of which presently resides on a redirect page.

The article name is "Candar dynasty" and the previous talk page history is found under "Isfendiyarids". Is there a way to bring the Isfendiyarids talk page history under the Candar dynasty article?

@Max45789: Thanks for the message. In general, you can move a talk page by going to the talk page and clicking the "Move" link. But in this case the system may not let you do that, because there is content in the target page. If it doesn't let you, then you can post a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests to get help from a page mover or administrator.

By the way, looking at the history of the article, it looks like you're engaging in a move war, which is considered disruptive behavior. It looks like your moves have been reverted four times by two other users. When a page move is reverted, the right response is not to reinstate it, but to start a discussion following the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. —Mx. Yes, regrettably the reason there was content on the talk page was because I was typing the reasons for a page move the very moment it was moved. I have of course to date not received any response or reasons against the move, despite my repeated attempts to engage in an honest discussion by:

1. Stating clear and concise reasons for the move on the talk page (more accurately on both talk pages since they have been split) and;
2. In the spirit of cooperation that Wikipedia was founded upon, contacting the user that moved the page directly in a genuine bid to resolve the issue through discussion and reaching a consensus whichever way, highlighting that my version is not necessarily the best and that we could reach a more suitable outcome together.

Despite this, I have unfortunately not received any response to either of the above and have started to question the motives behind the reverts, which separate from the title, also included the removal of verified material and citations that had taken time to compile.

I think you can just convert the draft page to a redirect. In other words, replace the text of Draft:DGSAT I with #REDIRECT[[DGSAT I]]. If other users had also contributed to the draft article and material they added had ended up in the mainspace, then the issue might be more complicated to ensure correct attribution, but in this case you were the only author so I don't think there's any issue there. —Mx. Hello hello! So I wanted to ask - why are the suggested edits of the browser and mobile versions of Wikipedia so vastly different? In the browser version, you can do copyediting, finding citations, and expanding on articles. In the mobile version however, you can add short article descriptions, images, image captions, and image tags. Why don't the people at Wikimedia just *combine* all of these together? Hi Monurin, thanks for the question. I don't know the answer. I found some information about the mobile version here, but I'm not sure exactly where the suggested edits on the desktop version come from. In general, it's pretty common for things on Wikipedia to be somewhat disjointed and not fully harmonized – that's a natural result of the project's decentralized structure. —Mx. @Slbs.Shiv: That makes sense. When I want to expand an article, I usually look for sources about the topic and try to summarize what they say. Here are some of my go-to places to search for sources –

• Google Scholar
• Google News for current events topics
• Google Books
• Just a plain Google search (or a different search engine if relevant, e.g. Baidu for China-related topics)
• Open Library
• The Wikipedia Library (for some topics there's a wealth of information here, though you'll need a bit more experience on the wiki before you get access)
• Newspapers.com for historical topics (requires a paid subscription, I think, but also available through The Wikipedia Library)
• A local library (and interlibrary loans). Sometimes it surprises me how much information is still available in physical books at libraries but hard to find online.
