Re

I am not doing too bad buddy!! Just busy enjoying my summer these days!! :)) Just to let you know that we still have to send e-mails seeking permission for images from Indiafm.com. User:Riana added this part of the step so users wouldn't violate the licence and cause a huge mess like in the case of the "Bollywoodblog.com" images. Furthermore, while both of us were in talks with the people of Indiafm.com, they also agreed to this step thus we cannot just change the procedure just like that. As for the response to your other question: Yes!! This permission is still valid for the older images and new images can be uploaded from the "Bollywoodhungama.com" web domain. The founders of the site are still the same; they just happened to change the site's name from "Indiafm.com" to "Bollywoodhungama.com". On the official site, it says "Bollywoodhungama.com aka Indiafm.com". Hope this answers all your questions. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me! -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 17:00, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, I wouldn't say it was inappropriate!! As a matter of fact, like you said, User:Riana might have incorporated this new detail. However, it is best if we stick with the original uploading procedure. Apart from Riana, I was the only one that was in talks with the people of Indiafm.com. We agreed to this licencing by going through every single detail as well as verifying the uploading procedures. Read the bottom part of the licencing under the "Template documentation", which in my opinion is very important. Best Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 17:16, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
The "template documentation" is added by the user who uploads the image. Like I told you before, when an image is uploaded, it has to look like this. When an OTRS volunteer finds your e-mail, he or she will remove the "OTRS pending" tag and replace it with the "OTRS permission tag, including the ticket number, which contains the date the e-mail was sent to the OTRS system. When I uploaded all the previous images, User:Lucasbfr was the one who replaced the "OTRS pending" tag with the OTRS permission tag. Right now, I think the best thing to do would be to upload images according to the original uploading procedure and see what the response is from the OTRS. What do you say?? -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 17:37, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
It is normal as User:Riana told me before that sometimes it does take really long for the OTRS members to get back at you. After all, they are normal people just like you and I; they are busy too!! Try getting in touch with other OTRS members and see what they say. -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 18:02, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey!

How are you?? Happy to see you. Many things keep me busy these days. Unfortunately, I'm soon leaveing WP. Circumstances force me to. On the whole, everything is fine, I just have no time to commit as much as I did back in time, and I miss that at times. All my firends, User:Zora, User:Plumcouch, User:Pa7 are no longer active on here, and it saddens me. Nonetheless, I'm happy we have editors like you editing our articles and improving them. I'm sure this project will only evolve. How're you and what are you doing nowadays? ShahidTalk2me 10:51, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words. Well yes I've already heard that this movie is a piece of nonsense, LOL. It's great that depite this you're trying to improve it. I'm not leaving now, but in a month or two, so I still have time to contribute as much as I can. I hope to give my utmost. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 11:19, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much, dear friend, for addressing all the image notices so brilliantly. So kind of you, I'm really grateful. ShahidTalk2me 17:28, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Done ;) ShahidTalk2me 17:48, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, apologies for the slow reply. I removed the speedy deletion tag from the above article as it does not meet the A7 criterion of "an article about a real person or organisation". The fact that there are notable members of that community, are 60,000 strong, and have an external reference are assertions of notability, enough to avoid a speedy deletion under the policy. A lack of notability itself is not a speedy deletion criterion; provided there is at least an assertion of notability disqualifies the article from speedy deletion. Feel free to nominate the article at AfD. Regards, EJF (talk) 16:25, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

If that reference is wrong (my Excel isn't working so I can't check it) then an AfD would probably be a good idea. Cheers, EJF (talk) 16:41, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Kosi river

Hi! Msprvaveen, Thanks for assessing most of my articles.

I have to lodge a complaint. The article on Kosi river was substantially expanded by me but some one has vandalised it and merged it with Koshi River (Nepal article) without any intimation and also added some text on a controversial subject of the present (2008) Kosi floods in India (see the discussion page also). The history sheet does not even recognise the contributions made by me in the past one year. Can you do anything to prevent such gross vanadalsim and rectify it. The Kosi river article belongs to the Indian geography section and to Bihar.

Can you give some information about the film Kapalakundala (1936)?

I have added lots of pictures and a map in the Narmada article.--Nvvchar (talk) 17:15, 30 August 2008 (UTC) Regards

:))

Thanks for your kind words buddy!! It feels really good when you work is being appreciated by your peers :)) I don't mind you fixing and making the article better. After all, you are improving the article. As for the images, i think the article can do without these 2 images (Image:Kareena & Shahid in JWM.jpg and Image:Jab We Met DVD Cover.jpg) The other four images are important. Image:Jab We Met Poster.jpg & Image:JWM CD Cover.jpg show the film's poster and CD Cover respectively. I feel that these two images (Image:Shahid in JWM.jpg & Image:Kareena in JWM.jpg are very important as they give the readers a visual presentation of the characters the actors played in the film. BTW, I think the "synopsis" section needs to be copyedited. If you can take a look at it when you have time, I would really appreciate it. Let me know what you think about the images and I'll try getting back to you as soon as I can. I have become really busy these days as University will be starting again for me in 3 more days :(( Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 22:24, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Indian cinema proposal

Praveen, I am not sure how we currently handle creating movie articles. I think it would be cool if we apply About.com's approach of a theatrical release calendar on Wikipedia. We can start with the audio release of the movie and get the cast and crew updated. Cricket project does this well. They create place-holder articles for future cricket events, as the events unfold, they get constantly update them. This will create base stub articles for editors to come and expand in the future. We can have tamil and telugu cinema portals that show the current theatrical list and links to archive pages. We will need to find a credible source for this information to constantly flow. I am not sure IMdb is the right fit for this and whether they include information about upcoming releases. This kind of database will be really useful and get many interested in this project. I personally would be end-user of such good information if it is available for tamil movies. Currently I am having to use song websites such Raaga.com and Musicindiaonline.com to keep track of new releases. I would like to know your thoughts on this. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 17:19, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Replies:
  • Article assessment: A bot can do the following to speed things up. 1. If another project has already made an assessment, the bot can update the class on the Indian banner. Tinu has a open BRFA for this task. 2. A bot can run through Indian film stubs and it's sub-categories, and auto-assess the articles as stubs. It will mark the class with "stub" and add a parameter, auto=yes. This auto paramter can be later removed by a human assessment.
  • Wikimedia India: m:Wikimedia India had some activity some time back. Now it has slowed down. Until someone puts in a lot of work in it, it will just be a proposal. It takes a lot of time and effort to setup something like that. There are legal issues to sort out. I am glad that we are atleast discussing it. There are very few countries like us. Yes, I was at Wikicamp at Chennai a couple of years back and was lucky to have met Jimbo and a few wikipedians.

Thanks for your note. Firstly, I welcome second opinions on any of my actions, admin or otherwise, so nothing said by an editor in good standing will cause offence ;) You're right to raise any concerns you have - in fact, anything that prevents that would be very harmful to our encyclopedia.

Secondly, from WP:BLOCK#Duration of blocks, "accounts used primarily for disruption are blocked indefinitely". This is standard practice, although the benchmark for deciding exactly what is a 'disruptive account' can vary between administrators. The editor had 20 edits, which started off reasonably promisingly, but quickly degenerated into unexplained content removal. Appropriate warnings had been left on the user page, but the disruption continued... hence the indef block. I agree that education is better than blocking, but an editor needs to demonstrate a willingness to be educated (ie by stopping problematic editing once they've been notified about it). Since the editor had shown no sign of either heeding the warnings, or attempting to communicate either in edit summaries or on their talk page, I felt I had to issue a preventative block. It's also worth noting that an indef block is just that - it has no set expiry limit. We often think of these as permanent blocks (perhaps because they often are); however, indef blocks can be shorter than 'short' blocks. If on finding they can no longer edit, the editor starts paying attention and indicates they will try to edit within policy, I'll quite happily unblock (and so, I think, would any admin). If you want to leave something on their talk page, feel free - they can still edit that, and if you can get them talking and get their education underway I'd be happy to undo my block. Regards, EyeSerenetalk 09:07, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome, and your diligence does you much credit. I see too many editors, especially on vandalism patrol, who think that templated warnings are a suitable way of educating new editors. Unfortunately they can sometimes be counter-productive, and are far less effective than a friendly welcome message. I understand why they get used (and we all use them!), but unfortunately the first time someone takes a personal interest in a new editor, it's often because they've been reported at somewhere like WP:AIV, and it's too late to do anything other than issue a block. If they'd been educated instead, we might have gained an editor instead of losing one. With that in mind, I think you deserve one of these:

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Savithri.PNG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Savithri.PNG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:23, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I suggest that you issue a {{subst:uw-vandal4}} warning on their talkpage, and then request sysop action - explaining that there is never any response to messages, and they have not been stopped by a short block - at WP:ANI to prevent further disruption once they violate policy again. It would also be useful to point out that the user may not have English as a first language. I hope this helps. LessHeard vanU (talk) 08:40, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Re: A-class rating

If it's assigned by anyone outside of the India assessment dept. , then it's not absolute. The dept. has the discretion to review the article and should the dept. feel it isn't up to the required standard, then the grade under the India banner will be changed accordingly. In the case the A-grade was assigned even for another WikiProject without going through some sort of formal process (eg; A-class review), then the grade is to be removed by default until it has gone through a formal sort of process. I hope that clarifies it, but let me know if you have any questions or something more particular in mind.

POK ARTICLE deletion protect appeal

this POKarticle has been posted for deletion..i have made the following appeal there:

  • do not delete : PLEASE allow editing to take place in this article so that it gets balanced; disabling editing and then crying unbalanced is hypocrisy!!!..As we all know we didn't delete european union article just because there was an "england" article or "france" article or "germany" article (which are part of EU nevertheless) ... Similarly we did not destroy soviet union article just because it is divided into 15 parts..Further it is very very clear that POK is not the same as azad k as pok also includes trans karakoram tract, gilgit and baltistan (from 1947 till now)...pok term is used by most if not all non pakistan media.so ip and soman contention invalid.. i think it is not "fork" since contents are not identical, verifiable, has reliable sources and differs from the other articles like "trans-Karakoram tract" or "Northern Areas" (at the maximum, there is a passing reference in the summary(if this is considered fork) style with redirect links to sub regions). So, i am opposing this high handed move based on ignorance..rather i suggest that those who suggest it as non neutral contribute towards making this neutral, if it is not already neutral..pahari sahib's contention of inflammatory not substantiated both in talk page of pok or otherwise..so DO NOT DELETEKashmircloud (talk) 10:18, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

if you can improve this article or if you believe that the article can be improved by removing the edit ban(say, exampple: semiprotect) and if you also concur that pok not equal to ajk, please help in saving this article from deleters with nationalistic (pakistani)/ religious(islamist?) motives for POK article removal(example: User:paharisahib is pakistani)..please save the POKarticle...Kashmircloud (talk) 10:18, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Lonar Lake

Hi! Mspraveen,

Lakes are as important a subject as Geology or City information. Also, Lakes in India are under serious stages of deterioration and need attention for restoration and conservation (Why India only, in fact all over the World as per Ramsar Convention). City lakes like the Bangalore lakes, Hyderabad lakes,Jaipur Lakes, etc are under serious deterioration due to urbanisation and pollution. In the case of Lonar Lake (thanks for capitalising the word 'Lake')it is essential to retain its identity and the article be kept under the category of Lakes. I have recently updated the "List of Lakes of India" as per the list prepared by the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) of the Govt of India, Ramsar convention and other International agencies. I was thinking of updating all the lake articles or add new articles on the basis of this list and also the information available on Management of Lakes in India from the studies done by several agencies including the World Bank. I have also contributed,in co-authorship with a colleague, a fairly large article on Lake Management in India for International Lake Environment Committee(ILEC), Japan, with (World Bank funding) which has been published under a special issue of ILEC as one of the five very good articles (selected out of 27 lakes studied by the World Bank). If the way my DYK on Lonar Lake has been handled is the norm of Wiki, then I may as well not write any more new articles on Lakes. To give a practical solution to the issue, I would suggest that a Disambaguation page be created with the names of the three articles namely, Lonar, Lonar crater, and Lonar Lake as seperate articles and then remove the tag of merger of articles from the Lonar Lake article. Also DYK's should be judged by people who are specialised in such subjects and not arbitrarily by any editor. I would, therefore, request you to create the Disambaguation page since I do not know whether I will be able to or am authorised to do it. Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 02:04, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

I have begun to realize that a newbie editor can learn a lot by particpating in the AfD process and trying to salvage articles that might otherwise be deleted. I never heard of this one before the AfD, and was beconming discouraged by how little was out there... until I remembered that English translations of Indian proper names are not always 100% accurate. Once I added the silent "H" after the "T" and searched under the alternate spelling of "Ananda Thandavam", I found more than I could believe. I was able to quickly address all your valid concerns about the original article... and think I did a pretty fair job. Thanks for the opportunity. Regards, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 03:40, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Quite happy to be of service. An AfD nomintion can always withdrawn by the nominator himself if the reasons for the nom no longer exist... but I am sure your endorsement of the improved article at the AfD will be seen by an Admin shortly as it is. Thanks for the kudos. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 03:54, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

What some people are doing to the Roy article is simply messing with it to further their political agenda. Your claim that criticism was deleted is factually untrue; that criticism was reported in recent revisions of the article--although you may not have agreed with them, the report was accurate. Wikipedia is not a sandbox, nor a soapbox. Besides, the opening line in your comment, about being 'a true Indian,' already suggests that objectivity is not your primary interest. Then there is the editing-matter--your revisions need seriuos editing, for grammar and style, but also these links don't all seem to work.Drmies (talk) 18:19, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the above article, please offer some help over the next proposed 7 days for citation provision. This page appears to have been taken over by user:tulnischal who has reverted your edits whilst not providing citations, that have been requested for well over a year now. This appears to also be the case for another article he has written called Mair Rajputs where he has duplicated the assertions[1]. 3RR

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Sikh Rajputs. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Kafziel Complaint Department 10:14, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. But I was under the impression that me reverting the editor after issuance of original research and synthesis warnings does not incur 3RR. Mspraveen (talk) 10:16, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Further, I attempted to discuss this with the editor on the talk page. I think the 3RR warning is uncalled for. I may be wrong, but my close to year-long experience tells me that 3RR doesn't apply to those actions of mine. Nevertheless, I'll try to report this at the OR noticeboard for a wider consensus. Mspraveen (talk) 10:24, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Original research is not vandalism, so reverting it is not exempt from 3RR. Attempts at discussions don't exempt you, either. Don't take the warning personally - just take it for what it is: a warning. Kafziel Complaint Department 10:26, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Oops, I got that wrong then. Thanks for pointing it out. I, however, thought that any material that is unverifiable and that can be challenged can be removed. You know it is irritating when the user has the shades of WP:TE with a single point agenda of having his synthesis into the article. Mspraveen (talk) 10:29, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Unverifiable content certainly can be challenged and removed... but not five times in one day. You can seek dispute resolution if need be, but you can't edit war over the content. Just remember: There are no emergencies on Wikipedia. Everything will work itself out in time. Kafziel Complaint Department 10:31, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Sure. Thanks for those little bits of detail. I'll have this sorted out keeping a cool head. Mspraveen (talk) 10:33, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
After looking over the page history, I was on my way here to block you for edit warring. But seeing this discussion I am confident that you will refrain from edit warring in the future, and as such a block will not be needed. Please be more careful, Tiptoety talk 13:54, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:Parineeta 2.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:Parineeta 2.jpg. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 23:51, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

DYK credits

This is concerning the DYK credits awarded on 26 August 2008 [sic], where you handed out the credits. The credit for Oslo Sporveier was given to User:Lampman instead of myself (crediting edit). User:Lampman then removed the credit on his user page—the reason was that the article was entirely written by myself. The reason this happened was an incorrect credit list provided by 74.14.21.228 when he administrated the DYK. So, could I please have my credit retrospectively? (I need it for my documentation on User:Arsenikk/DYK). Thanks, Arsenikk (talk) 21:55, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

population stats

Hi praveen, please come up with official population figures for hyderabad as well as greater hyderabad. The figures currently on the hyderabad article looks a bit over exaggerated, especially the population of greater hyderabad which claims to have 9.6 million. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cephas 405 (talkcontribs) 15:44, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mspraveen, thank you for your help so far. I have noticed further problems with the articles that user:Atulnischal has been writing here on Wikipedia. It appears he is cutting and pasting article content with major WP:OR issues in all of them too. The articles are;

Is it possible to get a request for comments for these articles together rather than independently, seeing as the same editor is working towards an agenda here? Thank you for your help Mspraveen --Shanti bhai (talk) 13:18, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Lakes

Hi! Mspraveen!

How are you? I am again back to you for help. I have enlarged four lake articles, viz, 1. Powai Lake,2 Tulsi Lake, 3. Vihar Lake and 4. Fateh Sagar Lake. The additons are substantial but in the case of the first two, addtions are less than five times the original text. But in the case of the latter two, the additions are more than five times and particulalry in the case of Fateh Sagar Lake it is more than twenty times. But in the last article, inspite of my trying for several hours, the Ilec reference could not be listed under one reference. It gets repeatedly merged with another reference. Kindly help to rectify it. Please peruse the articile and let me know if they (Vihar Lake and Fateh Sagar Lake) are worth putting on DYK and what could be possible hooks for both. Also no Admn person seems to be petrolling the lake articles for corections and changes. Thanks--Nvvchar (talk) 09:41, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

  • The above two articles have been accpeted as DYKs. I have posted two more articles, one on Cubbon Park, which has problems of expanded length and the other is Manasbal Lake on references, one of the references has disappeared from the web site. I have now made corrections and also added a few more references.I would apprecite if you could kindly have a look at them to advice me on the hook. Thanks--Nvvchar (talk) 05:19, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
    • Hi!

I am glad to inform you that with your support and encouragement I have been now been able to post articles which are being accepted under DYK. Till date, I have fourteen of them mostly put up in the last two weeks. Pl have a look at them, particularly on Parikrama and Khichan. Phote stream under External link under Khichan should be of interest to you for a visit in Rajasthan. I hope I will continue to get your guidance from now then as doubts crop up.Thanks--Nvvchar (talk) 08:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
