ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:54, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Kristin Fairlie Photo

[edit]

Hi Linus! Do you know how to change the image that comes up for Kristin’s page to her headshot from IMDB? 2607:FEA8:102:60D0:9DE9:54D4:61E0:3C3D (talk) 23:18, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! On Wikipedia, we prefer to use images that have been released under a "free license" to those that have not. For example, Kristin Fairlie's current image is available under a Creative Commons license. If we were to use the IMDb version, we would be forced to claim "fair use", which is a less robust legal defense for our use of the image. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions :) Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontributions) 23:23, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not believe that the doctrine of fair use applies in the case of pictures of Farilie. The picture is easily replaceable, so any justification fails.
You might enjoy learning more about Wikimedia Commons, and the far stricter regime that applies there. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:04, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I misspoke here. Sorry about that. The point remains the same, however: the IMDb image can't be uploaded unless it is proven that @Undergirl422 is the owner. Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontributions) 15:10, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Or that they have formal permission, lodged with c:COM:VRT to upload it there. There is no point in their attempting to upload it without genuine permission.
No need to apologise. We are all learning all the time. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:13, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, thanks so much for following up about this. How do I add the image under a Creative Commons license so it can remain as her main image? Undergirl422 (talk) 18:16, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the best thing to do would be to contact the Volunteer Response Team and provide evidence that you own the image or have permission to release the image under a free license. Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontributions) 18:22, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
