User talk:Mothperson/Old Cocoon 1
The very first archive of Mothperson's talk page. Much fun was had here.
- Currently, [Mothperson] is obsessing about the List of foods named after people
No kidding!
It verges on monomania. But just look at the difference compared to before you started editing in March [1]. All power to your elbow Mothperson :) -- Solipsist 19:17, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Merging
[edit]I think I see the problem... you can only move a page to an "empty slot". Merging has to be done by hand.
Checking where we are... You want to get rid of the contents of the current Heath bar and have Heath (candy bar) moved to Heath bar? The problem is that Heath bar already has content, and we can't (I think) get around this by moving it to another page and moving Heath (candy bar) in "behind it". Hmm. I'll think about this and have a play around. Shimgray 22:54, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- By cunning coincidence, I did my first merge just earlier today, following off your food-eponyms page... hmm. What I'll do is copy material over from Heath (candy bar) to Heath bar by hand, noting it in the log; it's a kludge, but I think it's also the solution... give me five minutes and it ought to be done. Shimgray 22:58, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Done! That looks a little cleaner now... since it's noted in the log as a merge and we haven't deleted any pages (they're just redirects, but the page history stays) all contributors are credited, albeit in a fairly roundabout way. Not that these articles contained much of substance for someone to worry about not being credited, but hey ;-)
- We now have Heath bar (with two intro lines, so you might want to massacre those until you get the text you want), which has redirect pages at:
- Heath toffee bar (I got that one there by accident)
- Heath (candy bar)
- Heath toffee
- Is that what you were after? I'm not flying on much more understanding of the system than you, I suspect, but it seems to be what Wikipedia:Merge tells us to do. Let me know if there's problems. Shimgray 23:04, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
No problem - it seems the important thing is to make sure to state you're copying material over in the edit summary (because attribution is a key part of the public-use-license), and to turn the old page into a redirect so it doesn't get deleted as junk (which would lose all of its edit history). If you run into any trouble merging or moving pages in the future give me a shout; I check the talk page most days. Shimgray 23:42, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Signing your votes at BJAODN
[edit]Hi Mothperson! I sure am glad you've decided to start voting on titles at BJAODN. We needed some new blood. One request I have, though, is that you put Support or Oppose at the beginning of each vote, before you add your comments. Some of the votes you've been casting are a little confusing - not sure if they are supports or opposes. An example of this:
- The Price is Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense
- Reference to: The Price is Right
Is that an oppose? I'm not sure how to count it.
Anyway, I am really glad to see you joining the fray. Keep up the good work! -- Kevyn (talk) 02:23, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
In no particular order...
- Ben & Jerry's is a valid link - however, you didn't use an apostrophe character, you used a slightly different character which happens to also look like an apostrophe... ’ not '. I've fixed it now. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Heath_bar&diff=0&oldid=12571190] Were you originally composing the text in a word processor, by any chance? The system gets a bit confused if it tries to include non-standard ASCII as part of page titles... You can cheat, though - find somewhere it works and
- When you get rid of the stub tag, yeah, it removes the page from the list of stubs. If you want to know what else links to the page, click "What links here" at the side of the Heath bar page. If there's nothing listed there, you certainly are in limbo... but it should be okay. There seem to be four "real pages" that link there, not counting userpages, helpdesk and so on. (It'll also be on category:Candy bars, but that doesn't show up on what-links-here). But most wiki-pages are only accessible through internal links, so... Shimgray 17:14, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bombay mix and Bhelpuri
[edit]In response to your question
I think what I wrote about Bombay mix being a traditional Indian snack is possibly wrong. Now I'm thinking it is might be a British invention, maybe based on Bhelpuri. Bombay mix is served dry from a packet and eaten with hands. The Bhelpuri article says it is served with chutneys, which suggests to me that it is different. Edward 07:38, 2005 Apr 27 (UTC)

Categories
[edit]If you want to mention a category on a page without putting the page into that category, you need to use ":category:...." in the Wikilink instead of just "category:...". I've fixed the reference on this page for you so it should be removed from the candy bars category now! Dr.frog 11:25, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
No, you didn't put a category on your talk page, but someone else did. Look in the "Heath Bar" section above. :-) Dr.frog 13:00, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Hello
[edit]Hello, mothperson. Sorry for the delay in responding to your mail. I wasn't checking my mails nor very active on wikipedia recently. Good to know that you're interested in List of foods named after people. I haven't made too many contributions to it really, as I have made to other lists. However if there is anything you would want to discuss, I would be checking my talk page. Jay 04:42, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Foods
[edit]I'm not sure why you think that what I reverted was more NPoV. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:01, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Well, no, I understood that; still, why isn't it NPoV? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:26, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I don't suppose that Dandelion and Burdock has had any of those plants near it for a long time either (but then, when was the last time that Stilton was made in Stilton? Even Chesterton had a piece on that). My feeling is that marshmallows, etc., are only misleading in the sense that they're no longer made in the way that they used to be, which is probably true of more than half the things we eat (for better or worse). Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:16, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Ah, but have you ever eaten marshmallow made with the actual root? No, neither have I; I bet someone somewhere still makes it at a ridiculous price. It's probably disgusting, but it would be nice to try it. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:55, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Interesting; I only have musk mallow in my garden. I suppose that there must be recipes on the Web. Ah, yes:
- "Originally marsh mallow roots were boiled to make a "mallow water," which was then made into the candy. Marsh mallows are hard to find, having a limited range, but common mallows are much more readily available. Boil the "cheeses" (the fruits or seedpods of the plant) in enough water to cover for 20 minutes. Strain off the cheeses, which can be eaten as a vegetable. Add sugar to the mallow water. Cook the syrup down until it is very thick, beat it, and drop it in spoonfuls onto waxed paper. When cool, roll the marshmallows in confectioners sugar."
- Hmmm, I thought that it was the root that was used. How about this one:
- Ingredients:
- egg whites
- teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cup raw cane sugar
- tablespoon powdered Marshmallow (root)
- Directions:
- Whip egg whites until almost stiff. Add vanilla and whip until stiff. Then whip in the sugar, 1 tsp at the time. Finally, add Marshmallow and whip again. Place by teaspoonful on cookie sheet. Bake in 325 oven for 1 hour.
- Recipe URL: [2]
Enjoy. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:22, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Books on food
[edit]Just an update...John Mariani's "Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink" does not seem to exist, but a "Dictionary of American food & drink" does. --HappyCamper 18:52, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Got the two books -- The dictionary of American Food and Drink, and also the Oxford Companion to Food. The latter book doesn't seem to be too helpful. It just has entries like "onion", "spinich", "orange", "yam", etc... --HappyCamper 19:12, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Sydney Smith's salad dressing is described on page 400 of John Mariani's Dictionary of American Food & Drink. There's even the original recipe provided too. Do you think it would be worth an article stub? --HappyCamper 08:40, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- There is a curious "Noix St. Jacques" mentioned here. Have you heard of it before? --HappyCamper 22:17, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Check out Sydney Smith's salad dressing...enjoy! --HappyCamper 02:55, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Huh?
[edit]For your entertainment, google "tortina mini candy" or whatever that Italian thing is with "mini" in it, but be sure to put in candy or candy bar for the search. When you get the first page of results, go a few lines down until you see the Italian candy name, and a site with, I think, an "mx" in its address. I was doing this trying to find out what the Italian candy bar was, when I came across this site, and no, I have not a clue why they are doing this. It is a mystery
- I can't find it. What site are you talking about? Paul, in Saudi 04:40, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Oppose rule stuff
[edit]Please leave the oppose rule on Wikipedia:BJAODN:The Next Page Title alone. I have a hard time understanding your logic, so I'll try to explain mine:
- Support votes always mean "I would like to see this title used". There is no other solid information to be conveyed in a Support vote. None.
- Oppose votes are all over the map, and tend to be objections, rather then actual oppositions. For example, "I don't find this funny" (assumed with bare Oppose), "This is baiting a well-known editor" (objectionable content), and "This shows up as a bunch of question marks on my computer" (technical difficulties) are vastly different kinds of objections, with differing weights.
- A person considering voting for something is going to pay attention to specific objections when making their decision.
- Notice, by the way, the asymmetry between 1 and 2. Support votes have only one possible cause; Oppose votes have many, and some of them are sufficient to kill any further Support votes in their tracks.
In addition, your writing style could use some polishing. I asked various people on IRC if they could understand your rant at Wikipedia_talk:BJAODN:The_Next_Page_Title#The_Optional_Voting_Rule, at the time I was writing my response, and almost all stated that they could not. A lack of conciseness is the chief flaw in your posting style; it is easier to understand a short paragraph that briefly sums up your points, then it is to understand three paragraphs that ramble and lose focus between points. If further detail is required, you can add it later. Thanks,
Luc "Somethingorother" French 00:01, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Why, oh why?
[edit]I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. I recall the Roti Canai article, and if I removed a speedy delete notice, it was because there was no reason given why it should be deleted. I try to follow the speedy delete guidelines, and don't delete anything unless there's a really good reason for it. It is always helpful if people putting a speedy tag on articles tell why they are doing so. Certainly a redundant article is a good candidate. Denni☯ 00:20, 2005 Jun 11 (UTC)

Re: Roger Moss
[edit]Wow some one else looked at the article besides my self. Actually i have a slight background in historic preservation / planning in Philadelphia, and while i have never met Moss i am aware of him. I don't know what your research has come up with, But Moss has written several books on historic preservation, now while their are not known in the mainstream, in the historic preservation community, especially in the north eastern US, they are basis for guidelines for many preservationists, they mainly focus on structural lighting, and wall coverings. Second he is on the faculty of the Department of Architecture and Planning at the University of Pennsylvania [3], a department that has strong historic preservation emphasis. He is also executive director of The Athenæum of Philadelphia [4]. With that said i have yet to see any evidence that he is a secularist, nor the other statements made in the article, which the writer has yet to source or provide evidence of. I would think that for a person that is so distaned by the religious community in Philadelphia, that one would be able to find evidence of these accusations somewhere repitiabule. Epically considering that one of Moss's forums is the preservation of religious structures, a focus that he has gained accolades from preservation groups and religious groups alike.
Also i am pretty much convinced that 209.137.173.69 (talk · contribs), 68.83.229.241 (talk · contribs), Spotteddogsdotorg (talk · contribs), Toasthaven (talk · contribs), Hohokus (talk · contribs), ConeyCyclone (talk · contribs), are either all the same person or some how related, as looking at their edit histories they are extremely similar and they users have similar interests. IMO the users is either involved in the Episcopal Church in Philadelphia or is an anti-preservationists.
I don't know what comments you have placed on the VFD, but i plan on putting a strong keep on it and rewriting the article with the remove of the unfounded pov. I don't know what your thought are but these are mine. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 23:32, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I came over here to point out what Boothy443 has beat me to: Toasthaven, Hohokus, and ConeyCyclone are all probable sockpuppets. I would add another one to that list: User:Melvis. Identical interests in their edit histories, all four accounts have mostly been used to vote on VFD's, and User:Spotteddogsdotorg is the most likely culprit. Their main interests (apart from voting to delete anything having to do with historical preservation) appear to be TV stations and personalities on the East Coast, particularly NYC, and all of them appear to be ganging up to vote 'delete' on anything Spotteddogsdotorg nominates for deletion. I hope the admins who count the votes take this into consideration, but in the meantime I am keeping a close eye on any VFDs and other activities from these five. Kaibabsquirrel 21:08, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- The Admins taking that into consideration is about as likely as seen honest person in goverment, not to likely unless it effect them directly. Any way, great rewrite, hopefully it will pass the vfd, seems likely now, and that more effective preservation arrticles can be written. I still keep out an eye on this article, just in case of any vandalism. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 22:17, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Their is no real system to the vote counts, that i have ever seen. Plus it the ability to actucally "prove" that users are sockpuppetts, which is pretty much ineffective. Basically, the general rule of thumb is/was, that most anon votes are discounted, with the exception of the nominating vaote, and that useres with limted contrubutions before their votes are also discounted. But as to it being actucally done in that way, considering that their seems to be no effective policy in the matter, is hit and miss. If it loses i'll have no problem with recreating the article, and contesting any asseration of it's validty. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 23:30, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Oh this guy is not stupid, he uses 2 isp, both resolve to the same general area, and actively edits on all his regestered and non regestered accounts. So that way their is not that look on the surface that theyt are the same person. Where he slips is that the edit histories of the accounts are to similar, and the vfd voting. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 00:01, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Humm intresting, i was looking at some other stuff on here, and their are people leaning towards thatthese users are related. What caught my attention was not the moss article, but several other articles that it edited that are on my radar. He aslo has a bad tendency to, subtly though, add pov to edits esspically concering articles on persons and places. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 00:55, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I am not supprised that no one has picked up him yet, their seems to be a lot of things that are turned a blind-eye towards. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 02:56, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Good job on the amateur sleuthing...I'm hoping that among the three of us and anyone else who is looking into this person's multiple sockpuppets, we might be able to at least let the admins know what is going on especially with regard to the VFD votes. They do take into consideration if somebody who is voting has little or no history on Wikipedia and the admins usually don't count those votes. What I'm more concerned about is that on several of the VFDs (on which the nomination came from Spotteddogsdotorg), because there were three or four "delete" votes right away from Toasthaven, Hohokus, Melvis etc., several others just assumed the VFD was legit and also voted delete - maybe without thinking. If we hadn't caught it, the Roger Moss article might have fallen victim to a frivolous deletion. I first took notice of Spotteddogsdotorg and other related sockpuppets a few days ago after Spotteddogsdotorg nominated two articles on the history of license plates for deletion (that "competed" with a license plate article that Spotteddogsdotorg has done most of the writing on), noticed a suspicious pattern in several of the delete votes (most had little history on Wikipedia, headed straight for the VFDs after creating their accounts, edited on the same subjects that Spotteddogsdotorg did, etc.), and also noticed that Spotteddogsdotorg had nominated a number of perfectly good railroad photos for deletion, apparently out of spite because User:TVSRR who uploaded the photos had dared to edit "his" license plate article. It all adds up to somebody disrupting Wikipedia and using something like 5, maybe 6 or 7, sockpuppets to do so. Kaibabsquirrel 04:12, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know how to add a sandbox to your personal webspace but it might be as easy as typing User:Yourusername/Sandbox into the search box and then starting a new article with that title when you get the "no such article exists" screen. There may be an easier or more canonical way to do it that I don't know about. Kaibabsquirrel 20:43, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Dogs and food
[edit]Well, I've gone over to the food-related area from time to time and tried to make sense out of the dishware/kitchenware/utensils/etc. stuff. I think this it the third time I've really hacked around in it in the last year or so, and I think it's all starting to come together. But of course in the process one lands on related categories, looking for missing articles, and one starts to see things that shouldn't be in THAT category, but should be in THIS one, and then when one starts looking at THIS category, then one sees... but there ya go, that's what WP does to one.
I've seen your name all over my watchlist recently with, hmm, I think list of fictional dogs?, so it's kind of funny that all of a sudden I'm showing up on yours. :-)
Losing a dog early to cancer sucks, and that's just that. --OK, losing any dog just sucks. I'm on dogs #4, 5, and 6 now, so I've gone through losing 3 over the last dozen years, and it doesn't matter whether they die of old age at 17 or at 9 of cancer. Bleah.
ANYWAY, to create your own sandbox, you can also do something like type in your user page (or talk page) [[User:Mothperson/sandbox]] like this: User:Mothperson/sandbox and then preview or save the page where you typed it and then just click on that link, edit, and go. Ta-da!

Well, the chapter titles aren't available any more on Rowling's website, but they're listed somewhere here in this article. Just wanted to make sure you didn't go on a wild goose chase trying to find them. Hermione1980 12:27, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Waffles
[edit]I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to take your comment. I had just read a book by Alton Brown, Gear For Your Kitchen, which discussed a few interesting tidbits about the manufacture of waffles in ye olden times, and the year frozen waffles appeared. I thought that those additions would add a little flavor to the article. While I was there, I tried to shuffle the order around a bit to make a bit more sense. I don't think that I really ended up deleting much by looking at the comparison, and I think it reads better. -- Norvy (talk) 06:12, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

How do you like your breakfast
[edit]Hi Mothperson,
This morning I found a potentially interesting seam of missing/stub articles that might interest you - breakfast cereals.
For a while now I've had a follow up note to update the article on Shredded Wheat which I had heard was the first breakfast cereal - a claim which I think I came from the 1953 Marilyn Monroe film Niagara. However, this turns out not to be true (although their white tiled factory at Niagara Falls has some interesting history). I've now found that the first breakfast cereal appears to have been Granula in 1863 (not to be confused with Granola).
I have started an article for Granula and rewritten the article for its inventor, James Caleb Jackson, but it looks like there are several other early cereals which have interesting histories and the whole subject seems to be tied up with Puritan morality, diet reform, prohibition etc. -- Solipsist 22:26, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I love Shredded Wheat (no frosting, nuked with cow's milk or soy milk), and Cheerios, cold, with one of the milks. I abhor Cap'n Crunch and Count Chocula and their disgusting relatives. This is slightly odd, given my other sugar proclivities, but in breakfast cereals I just know it's wrong.
- Okay. I'll bite. Whole wheat and hellfire are irresistible. What did you have in mind? --Mothperson 22:59, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC) (and yes, I've always been fond of that Niagara Falls/shredded wheat connection)
What I had in mind was a bit vague. I was looking to improve the Shredded Wheat article and the research showed that other articles were in even more need of work. Of the ones I checked, only the corn flakes article looked well rounded. It also looks like there are strong parallels between James Caleb Jackson and John Harvey Kellogg. Both had health spas/sanitoriums, were into diet reform (vegetarianism, no alcohol, no tobacco etc), connections to puritans/seventh adventists, and political reform.
There is some wider discussion on this website and similar. They also mention Charles William Post, Super Sugar Crisp and Sugar Coated Rice Krinkles. The articles on Post and a couple of his other products are passable, but there is clearly more that could be done. The Granola article doesn't correctly describe the pre-1960 Grape-nut styled product and the conflict between Jackson and Kellogg.
If Jackson and Kellogg were into reform, Puritan ideals and the like. What is the role of Quaker oats - are they actually connected to the Quakers, or is it just a marketing trick because that's what other breakfast cereal manufacturers were involved in.
Anyhow, as I say, it looked like fertile ground for improving articles. -- Solipsist 21:16, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Page move
[edit]As per your request, there's some instructions on how to move David White and create a disambiguation page now on WP:HD... (I've left it for you to do, so you can get the experience) Shimgray 20:28, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- No problem. I'm not sure if I explicitly mentioned to delete the "#REDIRECT" line when making the redirect page into a disambig, but I guess it's fairly obvious. Anything else, as always, just shout. Shimgray 22:07, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

- Well it in the form of Toasthaven (talk · contribs) decided to move the page several times this afternoon, then added some pov statements which have been repeadeatly taken out of the article, i dont get this gut, the 2 anon accounts i have seen him sdit from resolve to the Philadelphia area, yet he seems to have this extreme bias aginst the city and some loveafair with NY, more then likely some disgruntaled NY. As for taking it to another forum, i doubt that anything would happen from it. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 18:07, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You ought to put it, Frank Field (meteorologist) up for vfd, use the tatics he uses aginst him, see how he likes it. Just curious have you said anything to anyone about this persons activities. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 02:32, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Litterbox
[edit]I find the contents of your litterbox quite interesting to read, although I don't quite understand what it is for. Could you tell me more about it? :-) --HappyCamper 13:38, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I second the above. I got your request but I didn't quite understand what you mean... you seem to be referring to a number of abusive sockpuppets that should be reverted? If so, I'd suggest you keep the pages WP:VIP and WP:3RR in mind for reporting various kinds of abuse, and WP:AN/I for reporting alleged sockpuppetry. In this particular case, if you could give me some of their names I could take a look; if they're vandalizing, they can be blocked to get them off your back. Yours, Radiant_>|< 13:41, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Okay. I've permablocked Melvis and ShureMicGuy since all their meaningful edits were VfD voting. Hope that helps. Toasthaven seems legit. I'm not sure about the rest. If you have good evidence, you should probably report the lot of them to WP:AN/I and ask for a sock investigation. User:David Gerard and User:Tim Starling can double-check you (if they can spare the time, that is). Radiant_>|< 14:54, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

- It is technically not illegal for one user to have multiple accounts. However, if this is used for vote stacking, that would be an obvious violation of policy. It is also not necessarily a good idea; you might want to consider asking them if/why they have multiple accounts. If they get angry, that might be a sign of the accounts being in bad faith. Radiant_>|< 15:27, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Fair enough. If they turn into psychotic socks (including but not limited to heavy reverting, vandalizing user pages and vote stacking) please drop a line to me or another admin, and they will end up blocked. Swiftly, I might add. Regarding Anchor Bimbo, would this help? Radiant_>|< 15:47, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

KT
[edit]Hi, thanks for your friendly note a couple of days ago. For the moment, I am biding my time. After I opened the RfC, his behaviour became slightly less egregious, but not so much so that I stopped keeping an eye on him. However, he still appears to antagonize people, so it is mostly a matter of waiting for the right moment to take him before the ArbCom. I have to confess, though, that I disappointed that I am the only one keeping the RfC up to date, particularly because I don't want it to appear that it is some kind of personal crusade. People are bothered such behaviour but they don't take the time to document it. But it takes all of two minutes to copy a diff to the RfC and add a comment! For better or worse, Wikipedia is founded on the principle of openness; as you know, literally anyone is allowed to edit. The burden on us to prove a case if we want some banned, and a lot of people seem to get scared off by the "paperwork" (ie, documenting abuse). Personally, I'd prefer to see a more proactive attitude; first sign of anti-social behaviour, a person gets thrown out. This isn't some kind of sheltered workplace for socially maladjusted individuals; we have an enclopedia to build. -- Viajero | Talk 18:33, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- A quick reply -- I am leaving town for a couple of weeks. I thought his response to your comment was completely over the top; a fearsome glimse at the workings of a disturbed mind. That being said, I don't think that it, in and of itself, would be grounds for a ban. We would need to present evidence of a pattern of such behaviour. Maybe we already have enough evidence, I don't know. The first thing you could do is to sign the RfC under the section Other users who endorse this summary. The next thing you could do would to check his "user contributions" ever few days, looking for gregious edit summaries and checking the Talk page comments. If you find something, paste the diff into the RfC. (Don't worry about the format; I will fix it later). Furthermore, we take the long view, no? If the agression diminishes, that's enough; the issue is the behaviour, not the given user. I'll be back online in mid-July and we can revisit the matter. TTYL. -- Viajero | Talk 19:55, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I've just started cruising through his edit pages, and keep coming up with "page watched" when I haven't checked it yet. Did you do this for me?
- Not sure what you mean by this. Is this some new feature of the Mediawiki software? I haven't done anything on my end. -- Viajero | Talk 28 June 2005 17:49 (UTC)
Boothy
[edit]Since you seem to be friendly with Boothy... could you please talk to him and explain to him that he's overreacting? It would be a shame to see him leave the project. It is his behavior, not his opinion, that causes concern. Like I said above, the same behavioral guidelines apply to Spotteddogdotcom, as the admins must be even-handed. Radiant_>|< 19:39, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I guess it can be easy to get fed up with trouble users. We're trying to get some policy against some of that, btw. What I find that helps is considering the alternatives (getting a third opinion has a tendency of proving me right, don't know why) and remember you can always to cleanup tags, RFC, VFD etc. If all fails, go to Category:Wikipedia humor :) Radiant_>|< 23:20, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Janson, Lindtröm and Massillon
[edit]I remember being told the story about Jansons temptation, i kind of have a thing for remembering trivial info such as that :) But yes, to be sure i checked it in sv.wikipedia.org, search for "jansons frestelse" and it'l pop right up.
And what conserns Biff a la Lindström, i remember there was a known story to it and i found it with the first google (natively speaking swedish does help in this case ;))
This is in swedish but the first start of the text goes somewhat as follows
"The name Lindström sounds swedish, but in fact the steak originates from Russia. It's not just the beetroot and capris that reveals it's origin, but the fact that it's inventor Henrik Lindström was born and raised in St. Petersburg, capital city of tsar-russia."
http://home.swipnet.se/~w-57250/kottofaa/lindstro.html
I did some more searching and i found the same explanation in several other locations other than this url. Henrik Lindström was a army-officer and he is said to have brought the recepie to Hotel Witt in the city of Kalmar in 1862.
Of course no-one can be 100% on these things, partly because both jansson and lindström are vey usual swedish surnames, like smith and jones in the states :)
But another thing that caught my attention was that the mazarin pastry (as we atleast here in scandinavia call it) was not in the list, But there was a "massillon pastry" which description resembles very much the mazarin. Now the intresting thing is that both massallon and mazarin were notable french churchmen, living in about the same time (massilon was born just after mazarin died). Now is this the same pastry or a different one? or has someone mixed up the names, since i can't find a picture of a massillon pastry with google.
Way to go!

Use of the term "cruft"?
[edit]What's your opinion on using the word "cruft" (as in "fancruft", "schoolcruft", "gamecruft", or something similar) in VfD votes and the like? Because someone (User:24ip) is chewing me out on my talk page for using "schoolcruft" to rationalise my vote to delete a school article. Please respond here on your talk page; I've got it on my watchlist. Hermione1980 9 July 2005 17:17 (UTC)
- I'd never heard the term before I came here, but since I've seen it so often now, I consider it a good in-house term that says a lot in a little space, therefore a time-saver. I don't understand why anyone would object to its use, but then I don't understand a lot of what goes on around here. People are just insane. I must go read this. --Mothperson 9 July 2005 17:34 (UTC)

Hasty pudding
[edit]That was a fantastic rewrite, so there was no need to ask for clemency. I hope there is no one who really wanted to see the end of the pudding. :) Xoloz 02:39, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- I posted over on my page too (End of the pudding? What's going on here .... Never mind. You guys are making fun of us old folks)
- I forget; I was just coasting the Internet and felt that it was common enough to ignore its sourch, which by the way, had annexed ITself from another source dated to the 1890's.
- I took their word for it, but didn't feel compelled to devulge who they were.
- As far as the explosion business is concerned ...
- There was a movie some years ago that dealt with the biography of some Swedish immigrants, and what it was like for Swedish people in general through the puritan and colonial periods of America.
- I can't remember the name of the movie for right now (it was done during the 70's), but in the movie, which was an historical drama based on fact, one of the children of this immigrant family had somehow broken into the cupboard where the hasty pudding was setting up.
- She had eaten the entire bowl and started complaining that she didn't feel too well.
- When the family found out, they took her to a doctor; but the doctor said that there was nothing they could do to make her throw up the excess hasty pudding since the kernels had already gone to her intestine or had swollen in her stomach making it impossible to spit them back up.
- The only thing they were told they could do, was wait and hope that the continual swelling of the kernels would stop before any serious internal damage had occurred.
- That it did not, and she died of massive internal hemorrhage.
- You REMOVED the recipe?
- Are you saying that that's not a recipe; surely, since hasty pudding is one of your favorites, you know that I'm correct.
- What quote are you speaking of?
- WB2 04:23, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
- Anyway, here's the source of the recipe: <http://fooddownunder.com/cgi-bin/recipe.cgi?r=126423> from: <http://fooddownunder.com> of course.
- They have a nice printable version with links, etc.
- I found the page by surfing yahoo with "the exact phrase" as: hasty pudding, and "all of these words" as: recipe.
- It was a nice site I hoped to save for myself, but...
- As one might suspect, the people who were rejected by England apparently had brought with them all of the old recipes, etc., and you should probably be able to find lots more.
- You don't think it's a good idea to leave in a recipe?
- As far as the name of the Hollywood movie, I'll have to do some more surfing.

Over food and drink! Olives, Scandinavian food, jello, sockpuppets, and the RD
[edit]I don't quite understand what you meant by "crown" functioning as a verb in the poem. What does it mean then? It's a bit too subtle for me to understand. Even so, I was a bit disappointed to see that the term was not quite so prominently used in the olive oil article anymore. I am still trying to find out if "Lucca crown" has been used anywhere else before, but I seem to be running into some difficulties doing so.
Ah yes! Those new Scandinavian additions to the LOFNAP were quite nice - I have the list on my watchlist, so I saw those additions as they came along. I was quite pleasantly surprised myself, actually. Amazing, this Wikipedia, don't you think?
I've cast my vote for that jello article - if it survives the vote, do you plan on editing the article?
By the way, congrats on the barnstar! For your steadfast and thorough efforts, I must say it was very well deserved! :)
I really like the reference desk here. It's such a great place! As for my questions...well, I'm "just another Wikipedian"! :-)

Signature
[edit]Go to Special:Preferences. In the box labeled "Nickname", paste in the following: [[User:Mothperson|Mothperson]] <small>[[User talk:Mothperson|cocoon]]</small> (if you're looking at the source code, don't copy the nowiki tags). Click "Raw signatures". Hit save. Then, when you sign your name, it should come across as Mothperson cocoon. Of course, "cocoon" won't be bolded on other pages — that's only bolded here because it's linking to this page. I think that's what you asked for. Hope that helps! - Ha. Got it. Paste in [[User:Mothperson|Mothperson]] [[User talk:Mothperson|<small>cocoon</small>]]. I put that in my preferences as a signature and it worked, so if that doesn't work on yours, just calm down, get a glass of tea, and come scream at me or MediaWiki 1.5 or something. That should give you Mothperson cocoon. Hermione1980 16:21, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, crickets. What exactly have you got in your nickname box? Copy and paste it to my talk page with the <nowiki> tags around it. Hermione1980 17:17, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
Good for you! Now, ::shaking finger at Mothperson:: isn't that what I told you to do in the first place? :-) Have fun being more or less annoying.
One suggestion — you might want to start archiving your talk page, it's getting a little long. You can just create a subpage (like your Litterbox), such as User talk:Mothperson/Archive1, and cut and paste the inactive discussions there. Hermione1980 22:20, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
Candy bars
[edit]I don't think I would be of much help to you in building that candy bars page, but if I get a chance, I might borrow a book which talks about the history of candy bars. After that, I can help fix up the page. But no promises! I don't know when my next trip to the library will be.
By the way - A big, well deserved thanks to you! For your articles, your wit, and for making Wikipedia a better place to be :-) --HappyCamper 01:33, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Tv characters in wheelchairs
[edit]Thanks very much for your reply to my query at WP:RD. I am grateful. PedanticallySpeaking 17:16, July 13, 2005 (UTC) (P.S. I'm a BtVS fan too.)
- User:Laura Scudder, who has also answered some of my WP:RD questions, wondered too about what I'm writing. Only a few of my questions have directly been related to the novel. The wheelchair question because within the novel there's a television show and one of the characters is in a wheelchair. The North Carolina court question, because my hero lives in Wilmington. The gunshot question because he is wounded. Oh, the "R v. Doe" question. That's related. I'm sure a few others are. But mostly its just idle musings.
Have you done much with BtVS topics here? Last time I looked at the article on the show I was suprised it wasn't more comprehensive. But I suppose it takes a certain degree of fanaticism to get a show's article like this. Thanks for writing back and if I can be of help in your work, do let me know. PedanticallySpeaking 16:18, July 19, 2005 (UTC)- Yeah, I know what you mean about fanaticism. That injunction about never discussing politics or religion at the dinner table is really inadequate here. The strangest topics will give birth to the most titanic of struggles. Look at the edit history on Julia Stiles for an example. There I had a rather nasty run-in with a fellow who didn't seem to understand the rules of the Wikipedia road, an encounter which led to gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, etc. Oh, the Koran question was just one that occurred to me in reading. It doesn't have anything to do with the book, which is, not that you asked, coming along nicely. Though I should be working on it now, I'd say it's two-thirds written. I'm uncertain where I'm going to end up with the story. I know the Muses aren't coming down from Helicon and I have to go to them, but something will turn up. [edit]"Qui custodes ipsos concilium?" is a take-off on the famous quote "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes," which means "Who will guard the guards?" - By the way, I have just made a spelling correction to it. Oops, not good... Cheers, and glad you like it! [[smoddy]] 16:43, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit]If you liked my additions to different cat related articles, you should see my work on Big brown bat. ;-) (Seriously though, I appreciate the recognition.) Grika 03:20, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
An interesting place?
[edit]Hey, just thought I'd pop by and say hey. Thought you might find this page interesting: Wikipedia:Department of Fun/Word Association --HappyCamper 18:52, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- I was hoping in two weeks time we could improve the Jello belt article in say...2 months. I think it would be fun! We'd be learning about something new, and We'd probably be reading all sorts of stuff we haven't heard of before. What do you think? --HappyCamper 20:14, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- Jello disclosure -- sure, we'll keep each other's edits POV. I don't think I'll start until after the 13th though. Let me know if I can help you track down a reference or two. --HappyCamper 16:13, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
- Now, what are you up to, Mothperson? You're trying to make paper out of milkweeds? :-) --HappyCamper 01:29, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
- Oh yes, please do! Send pictures if possible. --HappyCamper 16:34, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Muffin
[edit]In fact I find muffins rather dull; not a patch on a pieflet (as we yellowbellies call a crumpet). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:50, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
- I've just created Yellowbelly (Lincolnshire), so you can satisfy your curiosity there. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:22, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
Half-Blood Prince
[edit]Disillusioned, yeah, that's a good word. Well, there's some parts of it I liked and some parts I didn't. Obviously, I didn't like the death, and I thought she spent too much time on the romance parts of it. I liked the way she made Draco Malfoy more of a three-dimensional character — I'm holding out hope for his redemption in book 7. Snape being the HBP was kind of…unexpected, for me. Whose side do you think he's on?
Anyway, I've got more things to say, but I'm on a different computer than my normal one, which just crashed about ten minutes ago, so I'll get back to you later. Hermione1980 20:52, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
This page is 63 kilobytes long...
[edit]You can tell that you are adicted to Wikipedia when it is time for your first talk page archive. (Well, POV warriors tend to have busy talk pages too, but I think we can assume this is all positive stuff.) -- Solipsist 17:16, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
