Talk:Launceston Church Grammar School - issues arising from this and the checking of details around australia might be something... SatuSuro 12:12, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

ACP Archiving

Sorry man, there is a mis-understanding here. Correct i did "blank" the page, but i actually archived it to archive 2. to find it, go to artice information > peer-review > and then click on "archive 2 - here". Im working on what theyve done, im going to gradually use what theyve said - over the next 4 or so weeks to make the article better. I dont see what im doing wrong - no-one was adding to it in a long time. so i closed it. then i archived it in the peer-review section of the article information which seems plain logical and yea. Smbarnzy 03:37, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Correction, due to the new template that theyre rolling into the talk pages, it is now in article milestones, but if you check the history, you will see what i have done above, and that i havent done anything wrong. If i have, i dont know about it, so tell me what im doing wrong Smbarnzy 03:40, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Question on uploading pictures

I have a picture here of Percy Umfreville Henn (copyright expired) and it's on paper. I want to edit it a bit (e.g. slice off the caption and Library barcode) and then upload it to the Commons (if that's the right place). Can you tell me how I can do all this? I'm unsure how to edit it and scan it to the JPEG format. Thanks, Auroranorth (WikiDesk) 09:51, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Problem User

Hey, im at a loss as to what to do with a problem user: User:Thewinchester - he has remved the JSHAA and PSA templates from the Aquinas College page, which i reverted. He has now been on the JSHAA page and has removed a link to an article which is up for AfD entitled (List of Western Australian JSHAA Member Schools) and placed a link to the category for it, the article hadnt been deleted (nor is it currently deleted). SMBarnZy 12:05, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you so much for stepping in, saved me alot of pain =P I would give you a bite of my CALIPPO if i knew you =) thanks again, you would have to be one of the best admins on wiki, thanks a million SMBarnZy 12:31, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

JSHAA Edits

I'm not going to take sides on the issue and play the usual game i've seen on WP. Simply put, it appears that Smbarnzy is making a patent misrepresentation of the actual edits. The issue in question is the removal of a redundant category Category JSHAA that has been adequately replaced and restructured for common sense. He has also demonstrating traits to the point of breaching WP:OWN, particularly by his own admission and diatribe [here. These changes have not been performed lightly, and were done so after being briefed at 2am on Sunday morning about serious issues going on with another young user. I have been working through the lists of changes made by this others and as a result making multiple clean-ups, *fD's where necessary, and other such appropriate changes in a manner consistent with stated WP policy, MOS, etc. I'm not going to disagree with your comments, i'm simply suggesting that you may not have taken all appropriate information into consideration when taking your position, something which commonly happens here on WP and I myself have been guilty of. I've got much better things to do than hold any grudges or shoot off in this space because it's about delivering quality well structured information. thewinchester 12:45, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Daniel's RfA

A joke? DanielT5 has helped me immensley (just a little less of what I'd want from an admin). In no way am I playing a game! I'm really 'trying to turn my life around', if you know what I mean. I think I was rather disruptive before, but now I'm trying to 'contribute positively'. Auroranorth (WikiDesk) 08:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Moondyne, would you suggest that I just edit modestly without doing maintenance tasks (e.g. just creating and expanding articles such as Percy Henn)? I am really trying to do this thing right! I won't do maintenance until I've taken an article to FA or maybe GA. Auroranorth (WikiDesk) 09:00, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Can you suggest some policies? I'll print them out and highlight key points (as I've done with Wikipedia:Article development and Wikipedia:What is a good article?). Moondyne, I'm really serious about what I've done over the past couple of days. It's positive, and it's a contribution! I'd appreciate it if you could rate Percy Henn as a member of WP:WA. Thank you, Auroranorth (WikiDesk) 09:15, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Blanked page? Sorry, please clarify what you mean, as I haven't blanked a page for about a year. I didn't log off from Wikipedia once at school - but their IP has been blocked - so that shouldn't be a worry. Seriously, I don't get it.Auroranorth (WikiDesk) 10:28, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I was going along nicely completing transfers from Dryandra to Banksia. Hoped to finish the remaining 15 done tonight, but got only seven done before other imperatives crowded in. Victoria Avenue, Perth

I was wondering if it would be encylopedic for me to create an article on Victoria Avenue in Perth? I thought it might make a good wikilink in the Aquinas College article, which could also have a little bit of information on CBC Perth in there? what are your thoughts? SMBarnZy 05:14, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Possible New articles

I was looking at making some articles on the following subjects, i was just wondering whether you thought they would meet criteria for an article.

  • Western Australian Gold Rush
  • Point Heathcote
  • Clune Park - here

SMBarnZy 06:57, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok, ill start work on Point Heathcote on Sunday probs, and then try to expand the Riverton article to inlude Clune park for a wikilink from the AC article, many thanks SMBarnZy 07:31, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Are you the Moondyne who left me a note telling me to stop adding "inappropriate" links to Wiki? The moderator, Dirk Beetstra, said it's okay to add links to the text, especially when they are relevant to the subject. The links I have added were not spam, were not aimed at increasing search engine ratings, are not commercial and are completely relevant to the subject of the article. What's wrong with them? I'm not trying to have a fight with you, but I need to know about all this. Beetstra said it's ok to put links in the text, so what's the problem? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Neilrobertpaton (talkcontribs) 08:34, 9 March 2007 (UTC).

Point Heathcote

I dont know where to take this stub from its current position, information is hard to find. Any ideas? SMBarnZy 15:14, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

I can tell you it was named after George Heathcote, midshipman on board the HMS Success under Captain (later Admiral Sir) James Stirling, and a member of the Swan River expedition of 1827. He gets a passing mention at Peter Belches. Hesperian 04:21, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

City of South Perth

Ive made a template here - User:Smbarnzy/Sandbox for schools in the City of South Perth, do you think it is notable? i was planning to make articles on the ~10 schools that dont have articles in that template. SMBarnZy 02:52, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok, thanks alot for all the advice, im going to try to avoid asking you about creating articles ever again (lets hope i can), im gonna study these guidelines over the next week etc and try to work it out, i guess my work will be the examples. thanks for the tips and hints, owe you loads. Images and lists

Hi Moondyne,

Two unrelated questions on slightly related topics;

  1. Can I get some advice on stripping the copyright off Image:Archbishop Riley.jpg? I didnt notice it when I uploaded the image to commons. Thanks. - Fred (talk)
  2. Can a list be a "non-article? I had assumed that article and talk space were separate, er ... spaces (pages?). It is a useful page, but I am concerned about the recents changes and fail to see the improvements. Perhaps I seeing this wrong. Regards - Fred (talk) 12:49, 11 March 2007 (UTC) That is as I thought. I will wait and see what happens with it. Ta. Regards. - Fred (talk) 13:23, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Hesperian 01:37, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
I'll do it manually. There's plenty still to be done. For some reason the EMA database lists Alby under "South-Western: Cyclone" as if it is unnamed; I'm going to have to check each entry manually to see if a name is given. Hesperian 01:43, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Aquinas College, Perth

I don't know what the situation is with this article. The following comment is included in the recent history on the discussion page:

01:11, 11 March 2007 Thewinchester (Talk | contribs) (←Undid revision 114090181 by Phoenix2 (talk) No community consensus on awarding GA, no discussion link to GA discussion)

As far as I could establish the edits to promote the article to GA status were made by the article's authors and not by the assessor. The article is also missing the usual good article box with a link to the version of the article which was assessed. It is part of two different Wiki Projects (schools and Australia) and will presumably have to be assessed separately by both projects. Perhaps you should take the matter up with user Thewinchester as it is was his/her comments which led me to believe that the article had not followed the due process. The article is also listed on the Wikiprojects schools page as a good article nominee and it is included in the current list of "collaborations of the week" which is surely unnecessary if it is a good article. Dahliarose 09:37, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

It does look as though the promotion to Good Article status is legitimate after all. The authors' self-promoting tactics seem to have caused the confusion. Only about a week ago the article was assessed as B within the school project but the authors tried to change it to an A, which is why I was suspicious in the first place. Assessments within projects are done separately but I don't know what the procedure is for good articles. I've posted a message on Thewinchester's talk page asking for clarification. In the meantime the authors have now reverted to the GA status. Dahliarose 12:24, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
I realised which two editors were involved and I know that Thewinchester wasn't one of them. He told me that he'd spent most of the weekend clearing up their messes. I shall keep an eye on them on the schools page. At least now I am forewarned! Dahliarose 09:58, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Sure, we are called Trinidadians or Tobagonians (depending on where your from). "Trinidadian and Tobagonian" is rarely used - it's clunky. Trinidad and Tobago is often used in an adjectival or semi-adjectival form - "Trinidad and Tobago Cricket team", "Trinidad and Tobago cricketer" is the form I have almost always come across. Schools Portal

My explanation for it, was that it hadnt been changed in months (the portal), so i decided to take it upon myself (being bold) and decided that it needed a change. I added a GA to the portal, aswell as an image which i felt was good (similar to the previous Scotch one they had). I did actually notice that Harro5 is the person who looks after it, and at the time of the change, i checked his contributions log, and he hasnt been active since like January 20 (approx) 07, and as the maintainer, that is a long time, and the article is meant to be changed every month, so i thought why not add one of the newest GA's on schools to the portal to show it off to the community, it may not have been by the book, but i felt that it was the right thing to do in the interests of the community and the schools portal. SMBarnZy 13:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I think this was my concern.

This image is a faithful reproduction of a two-dimensional work of art and thus not copyrightable in itself in the U.S. as per Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.; the same is also true in many other countries, including Germany. The original two-dimensional work shown in this image is free content because:

Laughing my head off

Because Auroranorth is back with a new sockpuppet. You'll know it by the elaborate manufactured stream of consciousness writing in the edit summaries and user space edits, that takes every possible opportunity to show us all the mental processes of a newby discovering Wikipedia for the first time. I especially liked the "are bullet points * like in Word?" soliloquy just prior to using the markup for the first time. Hesperian 11:54, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

I see however you have updated some of the stats to 100% complete even though some of the articles are still in stub status and/or don't have a Dictionary of Australia Biography reference. My understanding is that a person's article is "complete" and therefore counted if it was rated "good", meaning that the text from D.A.B. was included as well as a reference to it; do you agree?. (This appears to have been the case with previous edits made to the project page before I got involved.) — Diverman 05:35, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi again, I saw your recent edits to the project page, where you added links to the A.D.B. (http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/adbonline.htm which is not public domain) for redlinks. Ummm, that should have really been to the D.A.B (the public domain one). e.g. for Herbert Basedow, it should be http://www.gutenberg.net.au/dictbiog/0-dict-biogBa.html#basedow1 The project page says This list is taken from the public domain Dictionary of Australian Biography, courtesy of Project Gutenberg Australia. It's confusing because the the full name of the project ends with Australian Dictionary of Biography and the shortcut is WP:ADB (because otherwise it would conflict with WP:DAB, the disambiguation project. – Diverman 11:42, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Huh?

Did you notice that Sleeping With Ghosts copied Smbarnzy's entire talk archive? I've dropped a message at Smbarnzy's talk page over it.

And now we have The Bitter End on the scene too.

Something doesn't smell right. I have a theory but....

Of course, we could just have an entire bunch of mad keen Aquinians who get straight to work from their first edit on a particularly narrow set of articles. Orderinchaos78 16:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

What tne hell is wrong with you?

Look what I said was perfectly valid, if its trolling prove it before removing posts! Why was it racist? 123.255.55.221 05:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I never used the word racist, you did. Nevertheless, if this is not a racist comment I don't know what is. —Moondyne 05:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
No, someone comented with "removed racist remark" and you just said its trolling, how exactly is it trolling, esp considering with the news coming out now i might actually be right?? 123.255.54.203 15:29, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
User:123.255.54.203/.55.221 The talk page of articles are for the improvement of the article not for speculation. Additionally the language you use in the speculation was racist, your wording appeared to written such that it would draw editors into an arguement which is trolling. I'm actaully suprised that your comments were tollerated to point that you were not blocked from editing. Gnangarra 15:38, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

User:Gnangarra

It would appear from the above item that you and he are mates. Then you will understand that BlackJack and I are friends and colleagues (in the real world as well as on here) and that I am defending his position just as you are defending that of your friend.

The consensus in the original discussion about the Australian season articles was clearly that the articles should be removed and left as red links on the relevant template until such time (without limit) as someone could add meaningful information to them. This was the point made by Stephen Turner and it encapsulated the consensus of that discussion.

BlackJack agreed with Stephen and decided on returning to the site that he would add the extra information needed to provide meaningful information to the readers. Acting in good faith as always. Your friend on being told that the articels had been recreated performed a knee-jerk reaction and deleted them before giving Jack a chance to explain what he was doing and without informing the cricket project who should have had the final decision about whether Jack has complied with their consensus. It is clear to anyone with any intelligence at all, looking at the articles restored by ALoan, that Jack has complied with the consensus of the previous discussion, especially as he says the articles about the later seasons contain much more information (e.g., more matches, English tours).

I think it is you who has talked about Jack's integrity and credibility on the cricket project page. I think someone who has introduced as much new material as he has, has almost singlehandedly redefined two Wikiprojects as he has, all the time encouraging other editors to contribute, does not need to defend his integrity or his credibility. I don't know what sort of contributions you have made but I doubt if either you or your pal can claim to have done as much for the site as Jack.

On the other hand, your pal has defied the consensus reached in that discussion. Someone acted in good faith to improve those articles and he has attempted to suppress them without informing the cricket project. As I said on his page, he is out of order and should be brought to account.

Unless of course he has the decency and courtesy to restore the articles and ask the cricket project to review them. If he does that and makes a suitable apology to the cricket project, I will withdraw my comments.

Note that I do not ask him to apologise to or even communicate with BlackJack because I do not think Jack should have reacted as he did, althoigh I fully understand his frustration and I agree with him that Wikipedia needs to completely overhaul its administration structure and prevent abuses of admin power such as we have seen in this case.

If that isn't good enough for the two of you then it is you have problems with credibility and integrity. --GeorgeWilliams 06:56, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Since Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket doesnt WP:OWN these articles, consensus had already been reached at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1850-51 Australian cricket season there is no reason to discuss anything with them. Instead you resorted to personal attacks on the project page, my talk page and imply them here. I have nothing to apologise for, I have no further reason to continue any discussions while I'm being referred to as some kind of Orwellian Little Hitler by yourself on the porject talk page. Gnangarra 07:25, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Quote by Moondyne: Gnangarra deleted the articles per community consensus and in his closing comment said "please contact me to have any erroneously listed articles restored". Yes he did close the deletion of the articles following the original discussion as per consensus and he did say the words at the end of your quote.
But, there were no erroneously listed articles. It has been established that the articles should have been deleted as they were then. But the actual consensus was that the redlinks should remain on the template pending development of the articles to an acceptable level. The "new" articles were therefore re-created, not restored, and so they should have been treated in the same way as any other new articles. They should have been left to the cricket project to decide if they are acceptable. Indeed, the cricket project appears to have formed a new consensus that the information provided should be restored but that some of the articles should be combined. No one is saying the information should be deleted.
I still contend that Gnangarra was out of order in summarily deleting these articles without asking the author in advance about his intentions and without informing the cricket project of the situation and registering his concern with them. You can hide behind as many of these ludicrous red tape procedures as you like but it still comes down to common courtesy and you have shown a total lack of that by performing what amounts to a knee jerk reaction. You should restore the articles and allow the cricket project to merge them as they evidently wish to. --GeorgeWilliams 20:09, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Peace and quiet

I have had three or four days now of blissful peace and quiet. There have been a few distractions, but I only have myself to blame for them. I have actually had a chance to work on some articles! If this continues I may well be sane again by the end of the weekend ;-) As far as I'm concerned, our decision to take a hard line has been utterly vindicated. Hesperian 12:39, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

I removed some some of the specifics of hockey in the 1956 Olympics because it seems that he did not play in any match. The official report at http://www.aafla.org/6oic/OfficialReports/1956/OR1956.pdf has the lineups for all the matches and he doesn't appear in any of them (it is a 33 MB file). He also doesn't appear in the list of 14 given in David Wallechinsky's Complete Book of the Summer Olmpics (I checked the 1996 edition). Tintin 13:01, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Cricket in Australia

Hi. Cricket in Australia is the new Australian collaboration. Please help to improve it in any way you can. --Scott Davis Talk 13:46, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

I'd appreciate any hints, oh cricket supremo moondyne - all ive done so far is the see also list and some real book refs (gee the cricket project looks book challenged) and oz tagged a lot of oz categories that dont have themSatuSuro 05:03, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello Moondyne. The pictures at his cricinfo profile [2] were taken pre 1955 in AUstralia so they should be PD, but cricinfo has tagged themselves as owning it. Is it possible that they have purchsed the rights to it? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:10, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

It wouldn't matter providing they are pre 55 as the changes to copyright laws weren't retrospective. but cricinfo can charge for for providing higher quality/resolution, Gnangarra 03:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
You will need to show the source and the specific PD licensing according to Australian legislation, I'll dig it up if you want Gnangarra 03:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Just to clarify, once something is in the public domain, we all own the rights to it. I don't recall cricinfo paying me any money to give up my non-exclusive right to use the image.
Seriously, there is a serious and ongoing problem with libraries, archives, etc, placing false copyright tags on images. I approached the State Library of Western Australia about this a couple of years ago, and they agreed that their copyright tags were generally false, but declined to change their practices. Your best bet is to treat every such claim with utter scorn.
Hesperian 03:23, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
What they said! —Moondyne 04:57, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Sro and battye specifically behave like most institutions on this - denial in the hope that they can raise some revenue via an unchallenged process - it needs a court case (probably to federal level) for them to consider changes - and whats the bet the state govt would pass legislation to sustain their rights - as if we are really in a boom - staffing levels, government interest in growth or development - and expertise in these institutions show the reverse...SatuSuro 05:07, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
This cuts to the heart of copyright. I don't think the state government would have the jurisdiction. Besides, if we tried to force them to stop telling copyright porky-pies, they might react by taking down all their online images, which would be a lose-lose. Hesperian 05:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I reckon that the revenue they raise from sale of images would be minuscule. I think it's just laziness to fix their software with a tinge of arrogance and ignorance thrown in. —Moondyne 05:13, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Fortunately once its becomes PD it cant be withdrawn, shhh conspiritiously checks the room <whisper> I seam to recall the Bradman museum has been successful to some extent in retaining copyrights.</whisper>. its even worse with the battye as that collection is from freely given images in the first place. Gnangarra 05:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I knew about Bradman's name having some copyright protection, but images is a new one on me. Are you sure? —Moondyne 05:25, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Do you mean trademark protection? Hesperian 05:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
vaguely Remember reading on here(will dig) about this early on, something to do with a news image from the late 40's being used. Was also some off wiki commentary around the same time(not associated with here), thats what really dragged me into the murky underworld of image copyrights. Any how I'll do some digging under the cover of darkness tonight. One a different thought what are doing here anyway moondyne, thought you were sitting under a shady tree on the road to toodyay wait for a horse Gnangarra 05:35, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

The Battye Library has my Great Grandfathers photo collection on-line as well and also they are claiming such copyright, which was specifically against the intent of the donation. Wandoo

Re: "this farce ends now", its about time; welcome back. :-)

There's nothing inherently wrong with multiple plant species having the same common name, e.g. Swamp Banksia. But in this case, I can find no evidence that E. zopherophloia is commonly named "Powder-barked Wandoo". The Australian plant common name database gives its common name as "Blackbutt Mallee". I suspect a copypaste error. I've made a correction.

List of Wandoos: E. accedens (Powder bark Wandoo), E. capillosa (Wheatbelt Wandoo), E. lanepoolei (Salmonbark Wandoo), E. livida (Mallee Wandoo), E. nigrifunda (Desert Wandoo), E. redunca (Wandoo), E. wandoo (Wandoo).

I think your biogs are great, it was not intended as flattery. Thanks for the help and picking up that legislation issue, I will fix that up. Women were not permitted to sit on the bench and it required legislation to allow her to. Opponents to it did not stand a chance, I almost pity them. It is dificult to get across why she was so important, I might try and get another opinion from someone who has never heard of her. The Reflections book reminded me why I am so fascinated by her. I read it years ago and picked it up again recently; the sketch of an elderly Lady with skirt hiked up around her knees and wading out to confront bulldozers had been rattling around my subconcious. I hope I have done her the same justice she helped bring to so many.

As an aside, I once asked my Fascist(self-described) friend what he thought about women as heads of state, he said:

  • "Prime Minister! I don't think they should have got the vote!

A quick glance from his partner put an end to that conversation. :-) Best regards, Fred 11:05, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Forgive my nosiness, but I'd be quite curious to know what he has been saying about it. Thanks, Kelly Martin (talk) 18:04, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
