Pond Eddy Bridge

[edit]

I created a stub article for Pond Eddy Bridge with the standard NRHP templates for you. Go ahead and add text and pictures as you like. I'll keep an eye on it. --Appraiser (talk) 20:37, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pond Eddy Bridge

[edit]

Hmm. I assume you're talking about the article structure. For NRHP bridges, we generally defer to the bridge project guidelines, as if there were any. This is also a pain because I can't find the NRHP nomination for Pond Eddy Bridge in the OPRHP database (Would you want a photo? I could take one, assuming I get reimbursed for the fuel expenses ($10 or so from where I live) at some point by someone).

Tioronda Bridge is the only bridge article I've photographed, started and done primarily from an NRHP standpoint, mainly because it's a (currently, anyway) defunct bridge that could be restored and is now primarily of historical value and not used for transport (unless you're in public utilities, which it still carries).

For NRHP bridges we would generally write about the history of any previous crossings there, if known. If there is anything about the architecture of the bridge that's important, we put that in. The construction info is standard bridge project stuff. And any local historic impact (what changes did it make to the local economy?) ... that's good too. Daniel Case (talk) 20:48, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I suppose I could get around to taking that pic eventually anyway. Don't worry about it :-).

Rereading it, I realized why NYS OPRHP didn't have the nomination ... PA spearheaded that one, so it's here, on the PA ARCH database. Daniel Case (talk) 09:00, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your good article nomination for the article 1987 Atlantic hurricane season has passed , see Talk:1987 Atlantic hurricane season noting my passage of the article, and offering suggestions for further improving it. Great work on it! Hello32020 (talk) 23:55, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If it was unclear what I meant, or you may just be waiting to do this, I was referring to creating a table at the begining of the storms section. (Similar to this article's) Hello32020 (talk) 02:05, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shortman Road

[edit]
File:Shortmanroad.jpg
Shortman Road at NY 5.

A few weeks back, you asked if I would be able to get a photo of Shortman Road in Ripley, New York. I was down that way today and snapped this. I hope it is what you were looking for. Skudrafan1 (talk) 03:34, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is taken standing on New York State Route 5, looking east. It's .58 over the NY/PA state line -- it represents both the first eastbound on-ramp to the New York State Thruway and the first major junction on NY Route 5's 370.87-mile trek across New York.
As far not contributing more goes... I used to contribute A LOT (I have made 17,600+ edits, mostly in the ice hockey project). I did do quite a bit with WP:NYSR when I first started, and I actually am the original creator of quite a few of these New York State Route articles (I created NY 174, for example, which I see you've gotten to FA status!). Lately, though, I've been focusing most of my energy elsewhere in life. I definitely still like to help out where I can. I drive quite a bit through my current major hobby, geocaching, and I feel like if I can also take pictures of road signs and improve Wikipedia while I'm out there, then I'm not wasting my gas quite so much. :) So feel free to make any requests for photos of signage as you'd like -- if it's in Western New York or Northwestern Pennsylvania, I'll likely get there eventually. :) Skudrafan1 (talk) 02:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a method to my madness concerning wikipedia upgrades, though it might not seem that way. The tropical cyclone rainfall project steers me to an assortment of articles, including the 1981 AHS. I've also been focusing on getting articles I've formerly improved to B class up to GA class. Right now, I'm focusing on that season because there were a few tropical depressions that impacted the lower 48, with two leading to significant rainfall and deaths across Texas and Louisiana. They were the most damaging and deadly tropical cyclones of that season, which is unusual in itself. I'm more than happy to help you out with the tropical depressions within that article. As for getting it to FA, one step at a time. Let's see if we can get this to GA first. Thegreatdr (talk) 22:06, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it has enough information and references for GAC, so it is now GACed. I saw someone wrote a summary, which a recently learned was needed for a GACed article. Does the summary need to include the other TDs which did essentially nothing, or no? Thegreatdr (talk) 03:17, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It finally passed GA. I leave the FACing up to you. Thegreatdr (talk) 14:53, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The keys to the city for 1979 and 1982

[edit]

Here are entries from the Atlantic non-development database for those two years. A word of caution...all of these systems may not have been recognized as tropical depressions in real time. I'd stick to writing up the systems that have newspaper information, or some other source mentioning they were a tropical depression, to back them up. A search of the Daily Weather Map series and the Hurricane Newspaper Archive could help you determine which ones were recognized in real-time. The ones which impacted the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico will eventually have pages within the TC rainfall project. If you're still having problems, when I get back to work Thursday evening, I can look at the HPC surface analyses from 1982 to see if they mentioned TD numbers for systems that came near the United States. Our local archive does not go back before 1981, however. Thegreatdr (talk) 22:17, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. For 1982, the five named storms plus the 2 unnamed TDs would total 7 depressions...7 TDs plus the 5 named storms would mean they got to TD 12 that season. Go with the annual articles for years prior to 1980 (which you can reference, this database is "unreferencable"). This database was recently digitized, and I was one of the first to see it because I needed a record of tropical depressions between 1980 and 1987 for the TC rainfall project. It may contain errors, and does not appear to have supporting documentation at this time. Thegreatdr (talk) 00:00, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've more fully annotated which TDs might be which above, using the reanalysis file. TD #4 of 1979 is iffy...not sure which of the systems is TD #4, the one I annotated as such or the one to its southwest which formed closer to the Southeast US. Hope this helps. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:55, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dropping of a 1983 depression

[edit]

The article you used as a reference does not appear to have the information claimed in the article. Is it another MWR article that does, or have I missed it during my two reads? Fact tags have been placed in the appropriate locations until the situation is rectified. Thegreatdr (talk) 19:17, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest solution then is to drop the mention of TD6 being dropped after the fact, since it's unreferenceable. While the nondevelopment database is missing the system and you got the response you did from NHC public affairs, the reanalysis file mentions that there's a decent shot this system could have been a tropical storm. With conflicting signals present, dropping this sentence is likely the best route to take for the time being. Thegreatdr (talk) 19:26, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the entry from the reanalysis file since it shows the disparity: TD #6 - Recon pressures 1009-1012 mb 18-19 Sep with 35-45 kt winds 80-130 nm NE of center - maximum satellite intensity estimate 30 kt - need ships
There are seven reasonable candidates. TD6 isn't even the best candidate of 1983. Check out the system on July 11, between Bermuda and Nova Scotia. Thegreatdr (talk) 19:44, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

TDs for 1980-1987

[edit]

Once I go through the information from the two files I have, I'll post the tracks on the respective hurricane season pages with a disclaimer. I've posted the relevent 1979, 1982, and 1987 information on the talk pages. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:07, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has been done. I've posted the information I put on your talk page from recognized TDs onto the seasonal pages as well. That way, others can help out. I'm only willing to post the information from this period since I've had problems in the past due to a total lack of NHC/MWR information online during this time frame. We definitely have a TD problem in 1981, if what Lixion wrote in the 1988 MWR article is right about 22 TDs. Ugh. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:25, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be too willing to discount high TD numbers. Something changed by 1989 which significantly lowered TD counts from NHC. Some of us noticed the change soon after NHC created proper advisories for TDs which began around 1988 (instead of mere references in the tropical weather outlook). Others noticed that the TD definition itself changed to become more stringent (going from closed isobar to closed wind circulation and including wordage like well-defined and warm-core). While a number of the pre-1989 TDs probably wouldn't be considered TDs nowadays, some of them would have been TSs if meteorologists had the current tools 20-30 years ago. By the way, if you ever see newspaper articles from the mid 80s backward which define the term tropical depression, let me know. With such information, we might be able to create an article detailing the history of tropical cyclone advisories/warnings for the Atlantic basin. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:35, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of New York State Route 317

[edit]

The article New York State Route 317 you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:New York State Route 317 for things needed to be addressed. I put in Erie Canal info etc..... I'm 72.225.50.116 (I wasn't logged in!), Swear! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Check77 (talkcontribs) 20:06, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've reviewed the article and left notes on the talk page. I've put the nomination on hold for seven days to allow the issues to be addressed. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, here, or on the article talk page with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. Just a quick question

[edit]

Hey. Currently the transport GANs has 16 articles from the USRD, of which 12 are yours. Seeing as you just recently nominated another, would you mind holding back, at least until some of the backlog is cleared? Thanks man. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 00:56, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

USRD participants list

[edit]

As discussed at WT:USRD, the participants list at WP:USRD is being split by state. Due to any of the following factors- your extended participation in WT:USRD discussions, your IRC participation, or your extended participation in Shields or Maps, I have guessed that you are a nationwide editor and have designated you as such in the USRD partiicpants table. This is part of the lengthy process. If this is in error, please let me know immediately. This is especially likely with this group as I have to guess whether you are a national or a state editor. New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday June 1st, Columbia University area
Last: 3/16/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).

New York State Route 32

[edit]

Yes, I'd be glad to help. I don't know how far I'll get this evening, but I'll take it up again tomorrow afternoon or evening. It's much better to copyedit before going to FAC than after, though M-35 worked out fine, I see. Finetooth (talk) 02:52, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone as far as I can. Whew! Complicated path. I did a lot of low-level, partly invisible stuff like the many nbsp insertions. I think the last paragraph of the lead could use some spiffing; I tried, but I don't feel quite satisfied with my results. I wondered about personal research as an issue. Is it possible to tell from the sources cited that the highway is near a view or passing through a roadcut? Finetooth (talk) 02:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"visible from the road"

[edit]

I have included images of the country the road passes through to support the claims made in the text, particularly the one removed here. This image was taken specifically to illustrate the claim. If you'd like me to geocode it to support it, I can do that to. I intend at some point to get further north and take some other pictures. (Not all of the text removed need have pictures to support it ... in fact, some of it was extraneous stuff that should stay out).

Update: Geocoding added. Daniel Case (talk) 15:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Taking original images to support claims in the text is the one specific exception to WP:OR. In fact, it's encouraged. See WP:OI. Daniel Case (talk) 14:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I have indicated here exactly where the view described here can be photographed. If you'd like me to get up there and shoot it as it's warm and green now, before FA, please let me know. Frankly, it's a gorgeous image at the right time of the right kind of day, and you want it in the article if you're going for FA.

I'll be passing through there on the way to Albany tomorrow. The forecast looks good. I will fast-track any picture into the article. Daniel Case (talk) 13:43, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Got it today. Haven't edited it yet (it's getting late; I doubt I'd do it well), but I'll try tomorrow. Also got a nice residential neighborhood in Cohoes (a short, extremely low-quality stretch of 32 next to 787 that you'd never guess was part of a long state highway). Daniel Case (talk) 04:49, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Update: they have both been uploaded and added to the article. Daniel Case (talk) 20:53, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I let Julian know that I took some new pics in Putnam/Dutchess last weekend, some of which will be good in the articles on routes 22, 52 and 311. Daniel Case (talk) 14:44, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the geocoding on the image provides enough verification, though I could make the language less peacock-y. The New Paltz pic I linked to shows both the road and the Gunks (and even the Catskills in the distance). Daniel Case (talk) 14:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think a footnote link to Google maps or whatever would be sufficient to verify a "sweeping view" ... that was Finetooth's point. If you take a picture of something, you don't need a footnote. That's why I take so many pictures. See what Finetooth thinks. Daniel Case (talk) 14:50, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Guillermo (1997)

[edit]

When Hurricane Guillermo (1997) was created, there were evidently copyright issues, as was mentioned on its talk page. Have those been completely removed and dealt with totally, so that they will never be an issue again? I need to know this because I am working on making Category 5 Pacific hurricanes a featured topic, and Guillermo being a GA or better is part of that process; and in order to get Guillermo to GA status there cannot be copyright issues.

Thank you for your assistance. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 23:09, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please respond somewhere. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 00:17, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that most of the copy vios have been fixed, although a lot of the storm history copys the TCR word-for-word. While it would be better off worded differently, since the TCR is a work of the US Gov, it's not a legal problem. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 18:14, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For getting yet another highway article featured. Imzadi1979 (talk) 04:07, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did expand a little bit of history for CR S18 (CA), but it was only for the El Toro Road segment. I can't really find any history for Santiago Canyon Road at the moment, but why don't you review this part of the article and see if this article meets the criteria for GA. If no, please tell me the weak points of the article, and I'll try to fix it. Dabby (talk) 00:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Road pics

[edit]

I'd be glad to take pics of some of these roads (maybe all). The reason I didn't offer on the Rt 174 and Rt 175 when I saw the articles is because I'm not sure what constitutes a good road picture. A scenic view of the road? A prominent intersection? What DO you look for in a road pic? BTW, went swimming (if you can call a quick dip in frigid water swimming) in Skaneateles Lake today!Lvklock (talk) 00:45, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

50 GAs in 50 states

If you haven't done Illinois yet Lake Michigan Circle Tour could have a full-fledged LMCT in Illinois article. It would be great to see and I think it is in line with your interests.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 20:21, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are the only person I know to ask to create the article. I have driven the entire LMCT in Illinois and parts of it are very scenic. It passes through some very rich Chicago northern suburbs. I have only had success with historic streets. Anything is better than the one sentence in the LMCT article.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 20:37, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
